• What factors influence you to try out a new framework or tool?

It's something that I'd like to develop a community for and so I'm curious about what factors influence your decision to use a new framework or tool and why. • Can't run TOR from terminal

  So... I can't run TOR from my terminal. I have tried many different things, but I couldn't make it run. Once, it didn't stop to run when I wanted to. At my other attempt I also ended up failing because when it stopped to run I couldn't connect myself to the internet. I hope you can help me here guys. To be more specific, what I mean by "can't run from terminal" is that I can't hide my IP if I'm installing a program from terminal, for instance. Or if I'm running another program that is making a connection with the internet, my IP isn't being hidden. What I want is to make TOR work for all my programs. So my IP would be hidden in any connection with the internet.

• Is it illegal to forward copyrighted content? [closed]

  Ok, this may be a strange question, but let's start: If I illegally download a movie (for example...) from a HTTP Web Server, there are many routers between me and the Web Server which are forwarding the data to my PC. As I understand, the owners of the routers are not legally responsible for the data they forward (please correct if I'm wrong). What if I would install a client of a peer-to-peer network on my PC and this client (peer) would forward copyrighted content received from peers to other peers? Hope someone understand what I mean ;-) Any answer or comment would be highly appreciated. Mike Update 1: I'm asking this question because I want to develop a p2p-application and try to figure out how to prevent illegal content sharing/distribution (if forwarding content is really illegal...) Update 2: What if the data forwarded by my peer is encrypted, so I'm technically not able to read and check it?

• How to change Port 27000 from filtered to open status

  In my ubuntu box I am running flexlm licensing software on port 27000 and I am able to pull the license from the this port to run the simulation software locally. I am also trying to run the same software in another Linux machine (opensuse) by using the flexlm license from the Ubuntu box. However, my opensuse box is unable to communicate with port 27000 in my Ubuntu box. I have turned off the firewall on the Ubuntu box, played around with iptables and when I do a nmap from my opensuse box to Ubuntu box the message I get is that port 27000 is on filtered status. My understanding is that filtered status does not allow the opensuse box to communicate with Ubuntu. My question is how to change port 27000 from filtered status to open status? Hope someone can help me out. Thank you.

• How to handle loading and keeping many bitmaps in an Android 2D game

  In an Android 2D game which is using SurfaceView where its onDraw is driven by a loop from a Thread, I use many bitmap sprites (sprite sheets) and two background size bitmaps, which are all loaded into memory at the start. It all works fine, however, when the activity is onPause or after reloading it few times, Android shows a tendency to wipe out the big bitmaps only, probably to free memory. Sometimes this happens even in the middle of loading this very activity. In order to counter this, I made a check in the onDraw method to test if the big bitmaps are still there and reload them if they are forcefully recycled by Android, before drawing them on Canvas. This solution may not be the most stable, and since I know that there are much more accomplished android game programmers here than myself, I hope you can reveal some tricks or secrets or at least provide some good hints, how to overcome this.

• Is it better to concentrate on one or two research projects throughout undergrad?

  Currently in the 4th semester of engineering in an Indian university. The thing is - is it better to do as many short-lived projects/research work on diverse topics of computer science or stick to one/two projects consistently throughout my undergraduate years? Case in point: currently working on an image-processing project that promises to carry on for a year or so (as per the prof). Does this seem like being over-specialized at too early a level? Although taking on too many things will spread me out thin and in all probability not end up getting any meaningful work done. Especially as I hope to apply for grad school in the US. Would really appreciate any views and suggestions on this.

  Hi, I really really want to find this package. Because after I saw the youtube clip I realized it's just one of those things I must have done before I die. This tutorial would be great if the repository were online. My question is: Where can I find the file, and how can I install it without changing my current desktop? The project was called "project looking glass" and was released in 2007. It is now an "inactive open source project", according to its Wikipedia article. @Takkat found this VERY good live cd, hope it works.

• How to build a .Net app which runs on desktop and as a Windows Service

  Ok, I hope this is not too much confusing (with my poor English). I want to build a small .Net 4.0 app which monitors several other applications on a Windows Server OR on a regular Windows PC. It will have a WPF GUI with a variety of graphical controls. The app will be used in the following scenarios: If installed on a PC it should run as a “normal” single Windows desktop app If installed on a Server, it should run as a Windows Service. To use/manage the app it must have the same WPF GUI as in scenario 1 and the GUI should be run on the Server or on a remote PC At the moment I consider to write the application logic and connect it to the WPF GUI using a self-hosted WCF Data Service IN BOTH SCENARIOS. Since I’m not a pro developer I suppose it’s possible that I've missed something ;-) Will this work? Are there other/better solutions? Any answer or comment is highly appreciated.

• Wireless connect- Webcam activation- MBR repair/rebuild

  Evening: I've NEVER had so much difficulty with Ubuntu. I got "Ubuntu Made Easy" and couldn't believe it hasn't done a damn thing to help solve the problems!!! #1. Since install of 12.04 I haven't been able to connect to wireless. Have done everything I can find/think of. Laptop indicates it's receiving wireless. Ran all updates, restricted extras, etc. NOTHING!! Tried to find how to activate built-in webcam (it worked when I installed O.S.) NOTHING; tried to find MBR repair/rebuild terminal command.. NOTHING!!! The book has has been useless, so far!! I really have to solve these problems, otherwise laptop and UBUNTU are worthless!!! Hope someone can help me out with any or all the problems I've listed. Sure would appreciate it!!!!!!!!!!! (laptop HP 2000-210US) Thanks: Rick

  Well, I'm trying to code a gui for my engine, but I've got some problems. I know how to make a UI overlay but buttons are still black magic for me. Anything I tried was to compilcated ( if it goes big ). To Example I tried to look if the mouse position is the same as the Pixel that is showing the button. But If I use some bigger areas it's getting to complicated. Now I'm searching for a Tutorial how to implement your own gui. I'm really confused about it. Well I hope you have/ know some good tutorials. By the way, I took a look at the DXUTSample, but it's to big to get overview.

• Bring the Windows 8 'Start Menu' back!

  I've been using the the Windows 8 RTM from MSDN for a week but the more of my normal software I load onto the machine the more awkward it becomes using the new 'Metro' (yes I know that name is now not used) 'Start' screen. Yes, you can oraganise your programs in groups, or you can add them to the Quick Launch bar, or you can create alphabetic folders on the desktop but sorry Microsoft, none of these are as logical as the alphabetic Start menu of previous Windows versions.Fortunately the good people at Stardock have a solution in 'Start8', which brings the Start Menu we know and love back to Windows 8. It's still in Beta and the current one runs out in October. I'm looking forward to the final release and like lots of other users, I'll be happy to pay for this.Lets hope Microsoft either reinstate the Start Menu in the first service pack or gives us a usable alternative.   Here is a query language, more specifically, it's JQL, you can use it in Jira, to search for issues, it's something like SQL, but quite simpler. My case is that, I need to construct such queries programmatically, in my application. Something like: JQLMachine jqlMachine = new JQLMachine() jqlMachine.setStatuses("Open", "In Progress") jqlMachine.setReporter("foouser", "baruser") jqlMachine.setDateRange(...) jqlMachine.getQuery() --> String with corresponding JQL query is returned You get my point I hope. I can imagine the code for this, but it's not nice, using my current knowledge how I'd do that. That's why I'm asking. What you'd advice to use to create such thing. I believe some patterns for creating something like this already exist and there is already best practices, how to do that in good way.

• How to print with PYGTK on quickly

  I am trying to make a program that can open save and print texts with Quickly, but I can't get the printing part to work. In my code when you press the "printbutton" it opens a print dialog: def on_printbutton_clicked(self,widget): self.printdialog.show() and that works fine. And when you click "ok" it will gather the settings from the dialog and try to print: def on_printdialog_response(self,widget,ok): printjob = gtkunixprint.PrintJob(self.filename,self.printdialog.get_selected_printer,self.printdialog.get_setting,self.printdialog.get_page_setup) but when I run it doesn't work and just gives me this: NameError: global name 'gtkunixprint' is not defined Is "gtkunixprint" wrong? Or is it something else in my code? Or should I first import something? I hope you can help me.

• TFS 2010 and Expanding Possibilities

  My organization is migrating to the new Team Foundation Server 2010, and we all are busy experimenting with ALM features. I find it very exciting and I foresee quite a lot of possibilities for TFS 2010 getting integrated with the Dynamics product line. I hope most of us know about the Version Control capabilities. However, I see a strong possibilities of having Team Builds and other automations, thanks to the technologies like workflow foundation in .net which is now being actively used in various TFS scenarios.   Lots of experiments so there is more to come!!

• Unity: Assigning String value in inspector

  I got an issue with Unity I can't seem to comprehend, and it is possibly very simple: I am trying to write a simple piece of code in JavaScript where a button toggles the activation of a shield, by dragging a prefab with Resources.load("ActivateShieldPreFab") and destroying it again (Haven't implemented that yet). I wish to assign this button through the inspector, so I have created a string variable which appears as intended in the inspector. Though it doesn't seem to register the inspector input, even though I changed the value through the inspector. It only provides the error: "Input Key named: is unknown" When the button name is assigned within the code, there is no issues. Code as follows: var ShieldOn = false; var stringbutton : String; function Start(){ } function Update () { if(Input.GetKey(stringbutton) && ShieldOn != true) { Instantiate(Resources.load("ActivateShieldPreFab"), Vector3 (0, 0, 0), Quaternion.identity); ShieldOn = true; } } Hope somebody can help, in advance... • Should I choose 10.04 LTS or 10.10?

  I'm new to Ubuntu (and Linux) but I want to give it a go. I've spent a few evenings trying to get 10.10 to run but I think my nVidia 8400 GS is causing trouble; only recovery mode with failsafeX gets me to the desktop (low-res but seems to be fully functional otherwise). Given that the xx.04 vesions are long-term support, I'm wondering whether it would be smarter for me to use that. I don't need to be on the cutting edge - I prefer to have a system that just works, long-term. Later I hope to move my media center and wife's netbook over too. Question: Why should I (not?) choose the 10.04 LTS version over the newest 10.10 version?

• How do I create a LiveUSB that lets me install any Ubuntu version?

  What I'd like to do: have Ubuntu installed on a USB drive and from there install any ubuntu version on a hdd. This is kinda different from using usb-creator because I'd like to have a persistent ubuntu install on the USB drive and not upgrade it every 6 months. From there I'd like to be able to install the most recent ubuntu version. I think it's just a matter of configuring ubiquity, but don't know if this is the case and how exactly do this. EDIT: Let's clarify the persistent thing: suppose I have my USB with ubuntu precise on it suppose quantal is out in the wild suppose that I want to install quantal on the hdd of a computer suppose that I want/can use only the USB drive with precise on it I should erase/upgrade precise on the USB drive to quantal and then install it on the hard drive I don't want to touch my ubuntu install on the USB drive, I'd like to be able to install the newer ubuntu version (quantal) on a hdd from another one (precise) on a USB drive I'd better avoid upgrading the installation on the hdd Hope this helps

• Windows: starting sqlplus in new window from cygwin bash

  When I start sqlplus, more often than not, I want it to start in new window,whether it be on Linux/Solaris GNOME or Windows.I seldom use GNOME so I never bothered to figure out how.On Windows, one can use Windows menu or Win+R "Run" dialog but I prefer usingbash. Because, this way, I can keep the history in ~/.bash_history file.There are 2 ways. Using cmd.exe or cygstart.For example, to start default sqlplus.exe to connect to default local instance. $ cmd /c "start sqlplus sys/oracle as sysdba" 2nd example. To start sqlplus in 2nd Oracle home and to connect to non-default local instance. $ ORACLE_SID=orcl cygstart /cygdrive/g/app/product/11.2.0.3/dbhome_1/BIN/sqlplus scott I hope this tip helps reducing your DBA time.
