• Help me find some good 'Reflection' reading materials??

  If it wasn't you guys I would've never discovered Albahari.com's free threading ebook. My apologies if I come off as being extremely lazy but I need to make efficient use of my time and make sure am not just swallowing any garbage of the web. Therefore I am looking for the best and most informative and with a fair bit of detail for the Reflection chapter in .Net. Reflection is something that comes up time and time again and I want to extend my reading from what I know already from the official 70-536 book. I'm not a big fan of MSDN but at the moment that's al I'm using. Anyone got any other good published reading material off the inter web that can help revision for the entrance exam??? • Nicely printing/showing a binary tree in Haskell

  I have a tree data type: data Tree a b = Branch b (Tree a b) (Tree a b) | Leaf a ...and I need to make it an instance of Show, without using deriving. I have found that nicely displaying a little branch with two leaves is easy: instance (Show a, Show b) => Show (Tree a b) where show (Leaf x) = show x show (Branch val l r) = " " ++ show val ++ "\n" ++ show l ++ " " ++ show r But how can I extend a nice structure to a tree of arbitrary size? It seems like determining the spacing would require me to know just how many leaves will be at the very bottom (or maybe just how many leaves there are in total) so that I can allocate all the space I need there and just work 'up.' I would probably need to call a size function. I can see this being workable, but is that making it harder than it is?

• Will VC++ MFC become obsolete in near future?

  Normally people say MFC is little clumsy. It makes UI development slightly difficult to maintain since it has lot of auto generated code. It has good architecture (doc/view) but is not transparent like Win32 programming to understand how window program works in the background. So with this situation, is it good to extend the exposure on MFC programming or better to switch to .NET since for faster UI design with ease in maintenance. Is it good to continue as MFC developer or good to know .NET as well? How globally companies are looking into MFC as a technology for UI developments. Are they comfortable in supporting their developers to continue with MFC or looking for changing their development technology.

• Is it possible to modify ASP.NET to no longer require runat="server"?

  I know why runat="server" is currently required (ASP.NET why runat="server"), but the consensus is that it should not be required if you incorporate a simple default into the design (I agree of course). Would it be possible to modify, extend, decompile and recreate, intercept or otherwise change the behavior of how ASP.NET parses ASPX and ASCX files so that runat="server" would no longer be required? For instance, I assume that a version of Mono could be branched to accomplish this goal. • Python proper use of __str__ and __repr__

  Hey, My current project requires extensive use of bit fields. I found a simple, functional recipe for bit a field class but it was lacking a few features I needed, so I decided to extend it. I've just got to implementing __str__ and __repr__ and I want to make sure I'm following convention. __str__ is supposed to be informal and concice, so I've made it return the bit field's decimal value (i.e. str(bit field 11) would be "3". __repr__ is supposed to be a official representation of the object, so I've made it return the actual bit string (i.e. repr(bit field 11) would be "11"). In your opinion would this implementation meet the conventions for str and repr? Additionally, I have used the bin() function to get the bit string of the value stored in the class. This isn't compatible with Python < 2.6, is there an alternative method? Cheers, Pete

• Moving and resizing JPanels object inside JFrame.

  Continuing my quest of learning Java by doing a simple game, i stumbled upon a little issue. My gameboard extends JPanel as well as each piece of the board. Now, this presents some problems: Cant set size of each piece, therefore, each piece JPanel ocupy the whole JFrame, concealing the rest of the pieces and the background (gameboard). Cant set the position of the pieces. I have the default flow manager. Tried setbounds and no luck. Perhaps i should make the piece to extend other JComponent?

• Instantiate ItemsPanelTemplate

  I'm trying to create a ItemsControl that has a separator between items, for example a control to create a navigation bread crumb. I want the control to be completely generic. My original method was to create extend ItemsControl, add a SeparatorTemplate property, and then have the class add separators to the ItemsHost of the ItemsControl. The problem with this approach is that if you add extra items to the container panel, the ItemGenerator gets confused and the items are out of order and don't get removed correctly. So my second plan was to create a completely new control that would emulate an ItemsControl, but the problem I'm running into is that I can't find a way to instantiate an ItemsPanelTemplate. I would like to provide an ItemsPanel property just like ItemsControl, but I can't then create a panel from that template. Can anyone think of a way to either instantiate an ItemsPanelTemplate or way to add controls to an ItemsControl's panel without breaking the ItemGenerator?

Because i'm working on a program that i'd like to extend to a database, but i sure as hell don't know how!   I have a .net website written in C# and will make functionalities that other developers can use. So i will make some default implementation and a developer can overwrite some methods Example: i have a class ShoppingCart and a class Product the class product haves a method getProductPrice the shoppingcart will call the method getProductPrice for calculating the total price of cart The Shoppingcart and Product are in the same project and i will give the developers the .dll so they can't change the source code so we can update the assembly later So they need to make a other project and extend the product class and overwrite the method getProductPrice so they can implement there own logic The problem is that the shoppingcart will not call the extended method but the original If we make already a extended project for the developers and the shoppingcart will call the extended method then we have a circular reference because the extended product needs a reference to product and the shopping cart to the extended product partial classes also don't works because we only can use partials within the same assembly anyone a suggestion ? thanks in advance

  One of my high school students and I are going to try to do a port of Haskell's Parsec parser combinator library into Scala. (It has the advantage over Scala's built-in parsing library that you can pass state around fairly easily because all the parsers are monads.) The first hitch I've come across is trying to figure out how Functor works in scalaz. Can someone explain how to convert this Haskell code: data Reply s u a = Ok a !(State s u) ParseError | Error ParseError instance Functor (Reply s u) where fmap f (Ok x s e) = Ok (f x) s e fmap _ (Error e) = Error e -- XXX into Scala (using Scalaz, I assume). I can't seem to find any information on how this is done, if it is indeed possible. I'm thinking I may have to extend the FilteringSelect Dijit and provide the functionality myself but I'm hoping to not have to. The reason I'm trying to remove duplicates with the FilteringSelect and not the data store is because I'm using the same data store with three instances of the FitleringSelect, each displaying different values from each row of the store.

  I was wondering, what is the longest possible name length allowed by the Windows kernel? E.g.: I know the kernel uses UNICODE_STRING structures to hold all object paths, and since the byte length of a wide-character string is stored inside a USHORT, that allows for a maximum path length of 2^15 - 1 characters. Is there a similar, hard restriction on a file name (rather than path)? (I don't care if NTFS or FAT32 imposes a particular restriction; I'm looking for the longest possible theoretically allowed name in the kernel, assuming no additional file system or shell restrictions.) (Edit: For those wondering why this even matters, consider that normally, traversing a directory is achieved by FindFirstFile/FindNextFile calls, one call per file. Given the function named NtQueryDirectoryFile, which is the underlying system call and which returns multiple file names per call, it's actually possible to take advantage of this maximum-length restriction on the path to make an extremely-fast directory traverser that uses solely the stack as a buffer. Now I'm trying to extend that concept, and I need to know the maximum size of a file name.)

When the model is created the object is persisted with a POST to the web server, but when the model is destroyed there is no DELETE sent to the server?   Hi all, I'm having a scrollview as the detailedview of tableview cell. There are multiple views on the detailedview like labels, buttons etc. which I'm creating through interface builder. What I'm creating through interface builder is static. I'm putting everything on a view of height 480. A label on my detailedview is having dynamic text which can extend to any length. • Select distinct users with referrals

  I have a bunch of Users. Since Django doesn't really let me extend the default User model, they each have Profiles. The Profiles have a referred_by field (a FK to User). I'm trying to get a list of Users with = 1 referral. Here's what I've got so far Profile.objects.filter(referred_by__isnull=False).values_list('referred_by', flat=True) Which gives me a list of IDs of the users who have referrals... but I need it to be distinct, and I want the User object, not their ID. Or better yet, it would be nice if it could return the number of referrals a user has. Any ideas?

  I'm working with the DataContractJsonSerializer in Silverlight 4 and would like to deserialize the following JSON: { "collectionname":"Books", "collectionitems": [ ["12345-67890",201, "Book One"], ["09876-54321",45, "Book Two"] ] } Into classes like the following: class BookCollection { public string collectionname { get; set; } public List<Book> collectionitems { get; set; } } class Book { public string Id { get; set; } public int NumberOfPages { get; set; } public string Title { get; set; } } What's the proper place to extend DataContractJsonSerializer to map the unnamed first array element in "collectionitems" to the Id property of the Book class, the second element to the NumberOfPages property and the final element to Title? I don't have control over the JSON generation in this instance and would like the solution to work with the Silverlight subset of .NET. It would be great if the solution could perform the reverse for serialization as well.
