    I'm making a site for European client and he said Firefox 3 and IE 7 and 8 has more user than others browser for desktop in Europe http://gs.statcounter.com/#browser_version-eu-monthly-200812-201001-bar I've only IE 7 and Firefox 3.5.7 installed in my PC. Should I download portable Firefox 3.0 and test in it too even if I'm not using any new css property/selector which only has support in Firefox 3.5 or testing in 3.5.7 would be enough? And for IE testing in IE 7 would be enough or should i check my site in IE8 (downloading VPC image of IE8 and testing in VM) even if I'm not using any new css property/selector which only has support in IE8? Or is it necessary to use <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE7" /> in <head> ? But what will happen when user will switch compatibility mode to IE 8 default rendering mode? Can we make site compatible in IE 7 and 8 both without using <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE7" />? If yes, then what special we need to do.care/consider in css to make site identical in both?

  • Firefox "intelligently" and silently fixes incorrect file references in CSS and Scripts at runtime.

    Well this is a really weird issue, I really didn't find anything on this elsewhere so I thought I'd address it here. Say I have an "image.jpg" and accidentally reference it in the CSS like so: url(imag.jpg) Note the missing "e". Now for me, Firefox is so incredibly clever that it will still find the correct image, but NOT SPIT OUT A WARNING. So I assume that everything is ok. But later, when I test the page in any other browser, all of a sudden the image doesn't display (and rightly so). That's because Firefox thought it was a good idea to correct my error without telling me. This becomes more critical with scripts. Firefox will also auto-correct a typo in a reference. I just wasted a whole hour scratching my head and trying to debug an ajax function in Webkit - turns out, I just had a typo where I included the file. Why on earth does Firefox do this without telling, and where the heck can I turn this off? This has first occured somewhere around FF 3.0 and still persists in 3.6.3. /rant an thank fo any inpu ;)

  • If ssh connection fails using SOCKS then what? Automate switch to no proxy?

    Right now I am using plink in a batch routine that reconnects to my SSH server if I loose connection. I use my plink connection & socks proxy (firefox) to forward all my browser traffic. Works great EXCEPT for one thing! If I can't get to my ssh server for some ODD reason I have to go to options in firefox and revert back my settings to NO Proxy. It can be done, but its annoying! So how would I keep my SOCKS Proxy connection in firefox, but if I cant connect to my SSH Server, how can I automatically switch to the autodetect proxy/no proxy settings in firefox? I would think that I could use the Firefox command line arguments and a batch routine to do so, but I do not believe this is possible.     I'd like to check the version of Firefox through Apple Remote Desktop of all managed computers. I have written this, but it only checks for Firefox in /Applications /bin/cat /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/Info.plist | grep -A 1 CFBundleShortVersionString | grep string | sed 's/[/]//' | sed 's/<string>//g' For standard users Firefox auto update breaks if it is in /Applications so I instead have it installed in ~/Applications I'd like to check that copy (if it exists), but I can't specify the path in the command since it is unique to each computer. For example: /Users/jon/Applications/Firefox.app /Users/arya/Applications/Firefox.app Presumably I want to use find and pipe the result to my command. This should work for 10.6 through 10.8

    I use the window.onerror to alert javascript errors for debugging. window.onerror = function(msg, url, line) { alert(msg + '\nLine: ' + line); }; When an error is fired, it can alert this actual error message in IE. But in firefox, it just alerts "Script error!", but I can still see the actual error message in firefox's error console. I remembered several months ago when I worked on another project, firefox did not work like this. But I cannot get the code of that project currently. So I wonder what are the possible problems with this?

    Inspired by this post it occurs to me that I often suffer from the opposite problem. That is, I've got code in a legacy application designed only for Internet Explorer and I need to get it to work in Firefox. For example, I recently worked on an app that made heavy use of manually simulating click events, like this: select.options[0].click(); ...which completely broke the application in Firefox. But you wouldn't find that information in the answers to the other question, because that's not something you'd ever even attempt if your app first targeted Firefox. What other things should a developer updating a legacy IE-only application look for when migrating to modern browsers?

  • Web developing- Strange happenings

    As I'm teaching myself PHP and MySQL during break, I'm experimenting coding in a Ubuntu virtual machine where Apache, MySQL and PHP have been installed and configured to a shared folder. I'm not a big fan of Kompozer because the source code layout is a PIA, so I've started checking out gPHPEdit. However, since using it, I've come across two issues: when I edit the .html and .php files, sometimes the file extension will change to .html~ and .php~, becoming invisible to the browser. The only solution is to switch to Windows, right click and rename the file extension. In Ubuntu Firefox, when I click on my prpject's Submit button for in a practice form, a dialog box pops up asking what Firefox should do with the .php file, rather than simply displaying it in the browser. When I do this in Windows Chrome & Firefox, it goes right to the response page. I'm not sure if this behavior is limited to gPHPEdit/Kompozer, but I've never noticed this happening in Dreamweaver. Any solutions? EDIT The behavior in Point 1 occurs both when Dreamweaver is open in Windows accessing the same files and when it is not. I changed the extension filename of welcome.php, added a comment in gPHPEdit, and the file changed to welcome.php~ upon saving.

  • Unresponsive Script window pops up all the time now. Why and what to do?

    I don't know that it's for the exact same script each time, it may be. A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete. Script: chrome://messenger/content/folderPane.js:721 This is in association with Thunderbird I think. This doesn't just happen after I've stepped away for a long time. It happens every time I click on anything. Things keep running that I'm clicking on. Just before this started as a constant problem, I was looking at addons etc, and something in Thunderbird deactivated an old or expired JavaScript. I clicked on the update for that and after a while I found the best choice on the list and clicked download. I don't know that anything happened with that and I moved away from addons etc area. The unresponsive script window started coming back all the time. Every time I clicked on something in Thunderbird and sometimes with Firefox. I turned off Firefox and restarted, but it didn't change. Shut down Firefox and computer restarted didn't change. The unresponsive script window is persistent now.

  • ISA Proxy server

    Have a proxy at work that runs Microsoft ISA. i used to be able to connect using 11.10 with firefox no problem at all. i could either put the settings in firefox or the settings in ubuntu network proxy settings. this would give me a connection no problem ( slow due to the work network being really lame) since i upgraded with 12.10 firefox just crashes if i have any proxy settings (manual added the proxy settings). if i connect to a diffrent network without the proxy settings it works fine and doesn't crash i tried chrome to see if that would work... simular problem. chrome doesn't crash but is so slow it just times out all the time and can take 10min for a page to load.... not really sure where to go with this? i have tried a clean install of 12.04 on 2 diffrent computers and also both tried just upgrading from 11.10. Only answer i can see at the moment is role back to 11.10 :( i have tried all sorts like turning of IPv6 to see if that would make any diffrence but no joy... really am lost now. whats weird is the repositys are also really really slow through 12.04. 50 megs took an hour to download (ISA server has Ubuntu rep servers enables without authenication). really am lost

  • revived closed tab in chrome doesn't work properly, but works correctly in IE and Firefox

    I'm working on a website where information is loaded from a calendar. If a user clicks on a link on the calendar, it displays information about that link. If I close that page, and then re-open it, it works properly on both IE and Firefox, but if I open it in chrome, and click on another item on the calendar it instead errors out. Is there a large difference in how chrome brings back tabs from how IE or Firefox do that would cause this?

    In my website I have this javascript code, adding a vertical offset when in the url a specific section of the page is specified (#): if (!!window.location.hash) window.scrollBy(0,-60); However this only works in Firefox... I'm pretty sure window.location.hash works in all browsers, that is, the symbol "sharp" is correctly detected in the url.     Normally you can login to sites that require HTTP basic authentication by passing the username and password in the URL, e.g.: http://myusername:[email protected]/mypath On my Linux machine, I could access this website without problems with my Konqueror browser as well as with my Opera browser. But with Firefox it doesn't work? It always displays the "Authentication Required" dialog window? Any ideas why it would work with the other browsers but not with Firefox? Peter
