  Hi, I have a winform application calling web services hosted in IIS, by default, the client app will use Kerberose for authentication to IIS, and it failed for some reasons? But the same app works fine at another PC(with different user login), and I found it is using NTLM by checking the IIS server event log. is there anyway we can change the client app(winform) authentication type? • Tool for parsing smtp logs that finds bounces

  Our web application sends e-mails. We have lots of users, and we get lots of bounces. For example, user changes company and his company e-mail is no longer valid. To find bounces, I parse smtp log file with log parser. Some bounces are great, like 550+#[email protected]. There is [email protected] in bounce. But some do not have e-mail in error message, like 550+No+such+recipient. I have created simple ruby script that parses logs (uses log parser) to find which mail caused something like 550+No+such+recipient. I am just surprised that I could not find a tool that does it. I have found tools like zabbix and splunk for log analysis, but they look like overkill for such simple task. Anybody knows a tool that would parse smtp logs, find bounces and e-mails that cause them? Edit: smtp server is microsoft smtp server.

• Backing Up Transaction Logs to Tape?

  I'm about to put my database in Full Recovery Model and start taking transaction log backups. I am taking a full nightly backup to another server and later in the evening this file and many others are backed up to tape. My question is this. I will take hourly (or more if necessary) t-log backups and store them on the other server as well. However, if my full backups are passing DBCC and integrity checks, do I need to put my T-Logs on tape? If someone wants point in time recovery to yesterday at 2pm, I would need the previous full backup and the transaction logs. However, other than that case, if I know my full back ups are good, is there value in keeping the previous day's transaction log backups?

• Excluding files from web logs

  Looking through my web logs, I see a lot of entries that don't interest me. Some of them are commonly used images, css files, and scripts, which I can easily exclude by un-checking the 'log visits' check box in IIS for the folder properties. I would also like to exclude log entries for certain common requests which are not in their own folders. Mostly, 'favicon.ico'. 'scriptresource.axd', and 'webresource.axd'. These (especially scriptresource.axd) make up almost a third of a typical log file on my site. So, the question is, how do I tell IIS not to log these requests? And is there any reason that this is a bad idea?

• Cannot read configuration file due to insufficient permissions

  Okay, I realize there are many questions relating to this error, I have read several questions and answers without resolving my problem. I have a MVC site that I'm trying to debug on local IIS web server. I check the option to use local IIS in the project properties and I've created a virtual directory in IIS. The error I get in Visual Studio is: Unable to start debugging on web server. In IIS i try browse the site but get the error: Cannot read configuration file due to insufficient permissions Config File \?\C:\Users\Mike\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Projects\MvcApplication1\MvcApplication1\web.config I've set permissions for the pool identity on the web.config and whole project folder. I've tried localsystem identity, no luck! Please help me resolve this. I've spent several hours trying to fix this.

• URLs with query stripped of ampersands appearing in error logs

  I've noticed a curious phenomena popping up in my error logs recently. If, as the result of processing a form, I redirect my users to the URL http://www.example.com/index.php?foo=bar&bar=baz, I will see the following two URLs in my log http://www.example.com/index.php?foo=barbar=baz http://www.example.com/index.php?foo=bar&bar=baz The first one is obviously incorrect and will cause my application to redirect to a 404. It always appears first, usually a second before the second one. The 404 page is not doing the redirection, so it appears that the browser is trying both versions. At first, looking at my server logs made me believe it affected only Firefox 3.6.3, but I've found an example of Safari being afflicted as well. It happens fairly intermittently, though it can occur multiple times in a users' session. I've never been able to get it to happen to me. Any thoughts as to the nature of the problem or a solution?

  I have a web service that is deployed in tomcat, and it is rejecting a soap request over https. However, I can't see any logs as to why it is doing so. I have the following set in my service endpoint implementation file: System.setProperty("javax.net.debug", "all"); System.setProperty("java.security.debug", "all"); And I pass the following parameters to tomcat: -Dcom.sun.xml.ws.transport.http.HttpAdapter.dump=true -Dcom.sun.xml.ws.transport.http.client.HttpTransportPipe.dump=true Is there anything else I need to do to see the internal jaxws logs? Are there some other loggers I need to enable?

  It's no secret that application logs can go well beyond the limits of naive log viewers, and the desired viewer functionality (say, filtering the log based on a condition, or highlighting particular message types, or splitting it into sublogs based on a field value, or merging several logs based on a time axis, or bookmarking etc.) is beyond the abilities of large-file text viewers. I wonder: Whether decent specialized applications exist (I haven't found any) What functionality might one expect from such an application? (I'm asking because my student is writing such an application, and the functionality above has already been implemented to a certain extent of usability)

Problem : Siteminder protects physical files that are exist. And it is not protecting the folder when we try to access a non existed file. It must redirect to login page even if the file doesn't exist when the user is accessing a protected folder. How to configure in IIS 7.5 that Do not verify a file exist, before authentication by siteminder. SiteMinderWebAgent is a Handler(WildCard Script Map) we created using the ISAPI6WebAgent.dll How to Protect ASP.Net MVC Request with Siteminder? (Added this as My previous question did not solve the problem). MVC Request shows up in IIS Log but not in Siteminder log. Update : Microsoft Support says currently IIS7.5, even in earlier versions doesnt support wildcard mappings on any two Isapi Handlers with * wild card. Currently in my case Siteminder has * wildcard and asp.net mvc (handler is aspnet_isapi) has * wildcard to handle the reqeusts. Ordered priority doesnt work in the wild card mappings case with Just *. Did not convinced with the answer but will wait till tomorrow for them to get back.

  I am having trouble with a custom 404 error page. I have a domain running a .NET proj with it's own error handling. I have a web.config running for the domain which contains: <customErrors mode="RemoteOnly"> <error statusCode="500" redirect="/Error"/> <error statusCode="404" redirect="/404"/> </customErrors> On a sub dir of that domain I am ignoring all routes there by doing routes.IgnoreRoute("Assets/{*pathInfo}"); in the .NET proj and I want to put a custom 404 error page on that and any sub dir's of Assets. The sub dir contains static content like images, css, js etc etc. So in the Error Pages section of IIS I put a redirect to an absolute URL. The web.config for that dir looks like the following: <system.webServer> <httpErrors> <remove statusCode="404" subStatusCode="-1" /> <error statusCode="404" prefixLanguageFilePath="" path="http://mydomain.com/404" responseMode="Redirect" /> </httpErrors> </system.webServer> But I navigate to an unknown URL under that dir and yet I still see the default IIS 404 page. I am also seeing an alert in IIS that reads: You have configured detailed error messages to be returned for both local and remote requests. When this option is selected, custom error configuration is not used. Does this have anything to do with the customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" in the site web.config? I have tried to overwrite the customErrors in the sub dir web.config but nothing changes. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

• IIS 7.5 FTP Service crashes after installation of Advanced Logging 1.0 Module

  I've recently been tasked with setting up two new productions servers for an ASP.Net application. The servers sit behind a F5 Load Balancer, which in turn forwards the end users IP address forward via the standard X_Forwarded_For HTTP Header. All of the reading that I have done suggests that I need to install the IIS Advanced Logging Module in order to take advantage of the X_Forwarded_For HTTP Header. Some quick background: Both of the web servers are Windows 2008 R2 Standard (x64), with IIS 7.5 installed and configured. The FTP Role has also been installed, configured and is operational. The Issue After installing the IIS Advanced Logging module via the Web Platform Installer, I noticed the following Error in the Event Viewer: The FTP Service encountered an error trying to read configuration data from file \?\C:\Windows\system32\inetsrv\config\applicationHost.config, line number 374. The error message is: Unrecognized element 'advancedLogging' Trying to connect over FTP to either of the web servers results in a 530. I've spent 2 hours scouring Google trying to find a solution, short of uninstalling the Advanced Logging Module. As far as I can tell, there is no way to turn off Advanced Logging on a site per site basis. Help would be appreciated.

• IIS 6 302, 401 Error

  I'm having some problems accessing an ASP.NET website hosted on an internal iis 6 server that I am maintaining. Some users can get to the site, others (including myself can't). The app has Windows Authentication mode set in the web.config file, and Integrated Windows Authentication checked in the Website properties. Anonymous access is not checked. In the IIS logs, I see 2 lines when I make a request for the site's default page (Default.aspx). The first is a 401.2 error, and the 2nd is a 302.0 error. I've tried switching around as many security settings as I can think of, but had no luck yet. Can someone please help? • Unable to access newly created web site in IIS 7.5

  Configuration: 32-bit Windows 7 development machine with IIS 7.5 I created a new web site in IIS to host only MVC sites called MVCHOST. The physical path to this website is set as C:\inetpub\mvcroot. I created a new v4.0 pool called mvcpool for this purpose. I have given Modify rights to IIS_WPG, IIS_IUSRS, ASPNET accounts. I created this web site with a host header "mvchost" and port 80, in the hopes of browsing MVC sites in the following way: mvchost/mvcapp1 mvchost/mvcapp2 instead of localhost/mvcapp1 localhost/mvcapp2 The only binding I set is the default one: http:*:80:mvchost. I have also copied the files iisstart.htm, web.config, welcome.png and folder aspnet_client from wwwroot over to mvcroot. Now when I try to the browse this site from IIS manager, I get the following error: This webpage is not available If I leave out the host header and give some port, say 99, I can access this website at localhost:99. What am I missing here? Why am I unable to access the web site at: http://mvchost/?

• IIS 7.5 truncating POST body containing JSON data with ASP.NET MVC 3

  I'm facing a problem which I hope is a configuration thing with IIS but is right now giving a lot of trouble. Basically I have a controller that accepts a JSON and does some processing. While it generally works fine, but every now and then when the system has some load I get an error. After some painful debugging, we figured the incoming JSON gets truncated which causes the deserialzer to fail. To narrow down the problem - we wrote a simple controller that accepts a JSON and tries to deserialize it. In case it fails it just logs it. This works fine but when I hit it using a load testing tool (JMeter) it throws the same error (truncation) for a few requests. The # of failures increased when I increase parallel connections. It starts showing with 150 concurrent requests. We are running IIS 7 on windows 2008 server with ASP.Net MVC 3 with more or less default configuration of IIS. • Best Practice - SQL 2012 & IIS in VMWare

  We are pretty new to VMWare and looking for some thoughts on our environment. We have a VMWare cluster that has on one host: VM#1: MS Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise & SQL Server 2012 VM#2: MS Windows 2008 R2 Standard & IIS The IIS asp.net app talks directly to the SQL Server. We had this similar environment on physical servers a few months ago and just recently moved to the virtualized environment. Regarding the setup, we have not tweaked any of the vm resource parameters -- all is set as standard and all is working. What is observed is that the VMs seem to spool down and we get lags in response. Of course this sin't as fast as the old physical environment, but I am wondering if: *is it a good idea to run the SQL server and the IIS server on the same host? They are the only two VMs on it. The host is a new Dell R620 with 192 gb mem. does it make sense to change any CPU or memory reservations when it doesn't seem like there is any contention is there a way to keep the VMs spooled up to eliminate delays? This is a brand new squeaky clean vanilla install. What are your thoughts?

• IIS virtual location path

  Sorry in advance, for this seems to be a very noobish question and should be easily fixable, yet I can't work it out: I am setting up windows authentication for a website running on IIS 8.5: The Yii framework of the website takes input like http://localhost/mywebsite/index.php/site/loginand processes it, using the "login" action of the "site" Controller. I flipped on URL Rewrite to have nicer URLs, leaving the URL with /mywebsite/site/login. Now I need to set up windows authentication for this location. Very specifically ONLY for this very exact location. Only the /site/login location of mywebsite needs to have authentication. Every other location needs to have anonymous. Since it is a "virtual location", I don't know how to do it. I can set up win-auth for files, directories, virtual directories, etc. but not for virtual locations that do not map to any file but only to a Controller/Action in Yii. The working counterpart in Apache is but i can't "translate this into IIS". I have read that IIS does have the "~" symbol but I just couldn't make it work yet. Could it be used to achieve authentication on a location basis? I have looked around virtual directories as well, which seem to simply be a kind of "symlink" to actual folders on the harddrive. Can they be used differently to "create a virtual folder in a location that doesn't really exist to manage its properties"? Help is much appreciated.
