  • Advantages of Terminal Server instead of normal client-Server installation?

    What are the advantages of using a (Windows) Terminal Server and thin clients instead of using a normal Server and full clients? So far I've only really used normal servers and clients, but now customers ask about terminal Server, and I'd like to know pro's and con's of using them instead of an "old-fashioned" client-server network. Some things I can guess: easier administration (don't need to install/update office/stuff on 20 computers but only on the server). Easier backup (no need to backup client computers). And I'd guess it would be hard (impossible) to connect and use local (like USB) hardware with Terminal Server? What else are the reasons for or against switching to Terminal Server?

  • How to repair Mac OS X without reinstalling?

    I have an Intel PC. I have installed iDeneb Mac OS X in my PC. It's running fine. After that I thought about installing Snow Leopard for running the iPad SDK. So I bought a retail Snow Leopard and booted it with Rebel EFI boot loader. When I was installing Snow Leopard, at the end of installation, setup gives an error. So I restarted my PC and boot with Rebel and I saw that the Mac was there so I booted that into safe mode and Mac OS X runs. After that I installed iPad SDK. But when I try to create an application, Xcode is not responsive. It hangs when I choose new project, give it a name and save it on disk. After just as I gave name and choose save it hangs. Is there any way I can repair my Mac OS X without reinstalling? I have also been unable to boot into normal mode and also without Rebel CD. So I want to boot without Rebel CD and also want to run iPad SDK.

  • VPN Setup: Mac OS X and SonicWall

    I'm trying to get VPN access up and running. The company has a SonicWall firewall/concentrator and I'm working on a Mac. I'm not sure of the SonicWall's hardware or software level. My MacBook Pro is OS X 10.8, x64, fully patched. The Mac Networking applet claims the remote server is not responding. The connection attempt subsequently fails: This is utter bullshit, as a Wireshark trace shows the Protected Mode negotiation, and then the fallback to Quick Mode: I have two questions (1) does Mac OS X VPN work in real life? (2) Are there any trustworthy (non-Apple) tools to test and diagnose the connection problem (Wireshark is a cannon and I have to interpret the results)? And a third question (off topic): what is broken in Cupertino such that so much broken software gets past their QA department? EDIT (12/14/2012): The network guy sent me "VPN Configuration Guide" (Equinox document SonicOS_Standard-6-EN). It seems an IPSec VPN now requires a Firewall Unique Identifier. Just to be sure, I revisited RFC 2409, where Main Mode, Aggressive Mode, and Quick Mode are discussed. I cannot find a reference to Firewall Unique Identifier. I think I am screwed here: I am trying to connect to a broken (non-standard) firewall, with a broken Mac OS X client. Fortunately, I can purchase VPN Tracker Personal (a {SonicWall|Equinox}-authored client) for $129US from Equinox. So much for standards....

  • Mac updated just now, postgres now broken

    I run postgres 9.1 / ruby 1.9.2 / rails 3.1.0 on a maxbook air for local dev. It's all been running smoothly for months, (though this is the first time I've done development on a mac.) It's a macbook air from last year, and today I got the mac osx software update message as I have a few times before, and my system downloaded approx 450mb of updates and restarted. It now says it's on OSX 10.7.3. Point is, postgres has stopped working, when I start my thin server (mirror heroku cedar) as normal, and then browse to my rails app I get: PG::Error could not connect to server: Permission denied Is the server running locally and accepting connections on Unix domain socket "/var/pgsql_socket/.s.PGSQL.5432"? What happened? After browsing around a few questions I'm still confused, but here's some extra info: Running psql from command line gives same error I can run pgadmin 3 and connect via it and run SQL no problems Running which psql shows the version as /usr/bin/psql I created a PostgreSQL user back when I got the mac (it's always been on lion) I've no idea why, almost certainly I was following a tutorial which I neglected to store in my notes. Point is I am aware there is a _postgres user as well. I know it's rubbish, but apart from a note on passwords, I don't have any extra info on how I configured postgres - though the obvious implication is that I did not use the _postgres user. Anyone have suggestions or information on what might have changed / what I can try to debug and fix? Thanks.   • Redirecting or routing all traffic to OpenVPN on a Mac OS X client

    I have configured an OpenVPN (2.2.1) server on an Ubuntu virtual machine in the Amazon elastic compute cloud. The server is up and running. I have installed OpenVPN (2.2.1) on a Mac OS X (10.8.2) client and I am using the openvpn2 binary to connect (in opposition to other clients like Tunnelblick or Viscosity). I can connect with the client and successfully ping or ssh the server through the tunnel. However, I can't redirect all internet traffic through the VPN even if I use the push "redirect-gateway def1 bypass-dhcp" option in the server.conf configurations. When I connect to the server with these configurations, I get a successful connection, but then an infinite series of error messages: "write UDPv4: No route to host (code=65)". Traffic routing seems to be compromised because I am not able to access anything anymore, not even the OpenVPN server (by pinging 10.8.0.1 for instance). This is beyond me. I am finding little help on the web and don't know what to try next. I don't think it is a problem of forwarding the traffic on the server since, first, I have also took care of that and, second, I can't even ping the VPN server locally through the tunnel (or ping anything at all for that matter). Thank you for your help.   • Just a few questions about Hyper-V virtual machines and clustering

    I have been using Microsoft’s Hyper-V technology for a little while now, but I am just now dipping my toe into clustering. In particular, I am trying to implement a fault-tolerant SQL DB. This involves setting up two VMs, clustering them via Failover Cluster, and then installing SQL Server in some fashion. I have two physical machines - one high-end and rather beefy “heavy lifter” to contain the majority of the VMs, and another “backup” (a repurposed desktop) to hold the essential “secondary” (or failover) AD-DC, SQL and FS VMs. The main reason why I find the failover cluster at the VM level so attractive is that it presents a single IP and DNS entry to the network as a whole - if one machine (physical or virtual) goes down, you might loose some ping and the connections get reset, but the network applications (Microsoft RMS connection to backend SQL) can still connect to a viable DB without having to mess around with the settings at all. My first question is in terms of SQL Server itself. If I have a cluster between two VMs, does it make more sense to install the SQL Server in Failover Cluster configuration or should I simply install it in a stand-alone config and mirror the DBs? For example, this post suggests just mirroring the DBs, but do I just mirror standalone DBs on standalone VMs, or can I get the network and failover benefits of clustered VMs while still utilizing (on each clustered VM) standalone DBs that have been mirrored between each other? As well, I have come across a lot of documentation about SQL clustering, but most assume a number (#2) of physical machines to hold not only the actual SQL VMs but also the Quorum and Witness stores. I will not be able to muster more than two physical machines. As such, I will have to be satisfied with a VM cluster that does not exceed two VMs (one for each physical machine). Another issue involves MSDTC - the Distributed Transaction Coordinator. When attempting to install the SQL Failover Cluster (I never completed it for this reason) it threw a hissy fit because MSDTC had not been clustered. Search as I might, I have not yet found a way to do so under Windows Server 2012 R2. I have found plenty of docs for Windows 2008 and 2008 R2, but these instructions don’t align with 2012 R2 (at least, not in a way that allows me to successfully cluster MSDTC). Plus, some of the instructions that I have found for SQL Server Failover Cluster installation suggest that a third “network device” - shared network storage (a SAN) - is required for the DB itself (and other functionality). I do not have this, and won’t be getting this. Most of my storage exists on the “heavy lifter” that was designed for all of the “primary” VMs. If that physical machine goes down, so does the storage. The secondary server does have enough resources for an AD-DC Server, an SQL server and a File Server, so it will handle the “secondary” failover versions of those VMs (clustered or not). My final question involves file servers. If I cluster file servers between two VMs (one on my “heavy lifter” and another on my “backup”, how do I mirror the data between them? Clustering VMs only provides a single point of access on the network for a resource, it doesn’t exactly replicate data between the two - that is left to the services that serve up that data. I am unsure how I can ensure that file server data between two clustered file server VMs can be properly mirrored. Remember, I only have two devices to be used here - my primary machine and a backup secondary. There is no chance of me obtaining a SAN or any other type of network attached storage. What exists on the machines must act as the storage. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I've tried removing/adding printers, clearing all caches with Onyx, repairing permissions, all manner of things to no avail. I asked someone more knowledgeable than I about whether it was possible for my Mac to be taken over if I were visiting another site for a conference or if I went on a wifi network at a local coffee house with policies from an OS X Server with workgroup manager (either legit for the site or someone running a version of OS X Server on hardware they have hidden somewhere on the network), which apparently could be set up to do things like limit my access to Finder or impose other neat whiz-bang management features. He said that it is indeed possible for it to happen as it would be assigned via the DHCP server and the OS X server would assume my Mac is a guest and could hand out restrictions and apparently my Mac will happily accept them without notifying me or giving me an option, unlike Windows which I believe would need to be joined to a domain before it becomes "managed" by Active Directory. So my question is as network admins and sysadmins with users traveling with MacBooks, is there a way to reasonably protect your users from having their machines hijacked without resorting to just turning off networking all the time? Or isn't this much of a security hazard? What threat does this pose to the road warriors in your businesses?

There's a global dynamic pool, and for each full-time employee's laptop I have a single IP static pool set by MAC address. One and only one of the clients, running OS X 10.7.5, consistently fails to get a static assignment. The MAC address in the static pool definition has been carefully re-checked.   • Dual pane file manager for Mac OS

    Is there a good customizable dual-pane file manager for Mac like Total Commander / Far Manager in Windows, or like Krusader / Midnight Commander in Linux? I used to work on Windows for quite a while and mostly used Far Manager and sometimes Total Commander, then I switched to Ubuntu Linux and used Krusader, now I switched to Mac OS (Snow Leopard) and I'm having a hard time trying to find a good file manager... Many of the existing applications are trying to replace the Finder with "multimedia capabilities nobody cares about in file manager - IMHO" (Path Finder, ForkLift), some of them are almost good dual-pane file managers (couldn't remember examples), but none of them worked for me mostly because of one reason: I couldn't integrate my file/folder comparison utility (Araxis Merge for Mac) with them... The way it worked for me in Windows and Linux is that I was setting the cursor on one file in the left pane, then setting the right-pane cursor on another file in right pane, then I pressed a hotkey that launched Araxis Merge with those to files/folders comparison results. It was very easy to set up in Far Manager (Windows) and Krusader (Linux, actually in Linux I used "Meld" instead of Araxis Merge...) The tool I'm looking for doesn't necessarily has to be free...   • Host spreads wrong MAC Adress of router on the WIFI

    Strange things are going on our network. Since yesterday a host which is actually not on our subnet spreads wrong ARP Replys on our network. To be precise, only on the WIFI. If I connect my Laptop to the cable ethernet, it gets the right MAC adress of the router. Also my Android phone and my Ubuntu system do get the right MAC Adress. So I took a look at wireshark. When I clear the ARP cache of the windows machine, the first ARP response is correct and comes from the router. But like 10 ms later another ARP response comes from another host in the WIFI. The host changes its IP Adresses from time to time and they look like they are not on our subnet. So I can not use the internet because DNS is not working anymore. Sometimes the router wins the race condition and the mac adress is set correctly in the arp cache. I first thought, this is an arp-poisoning mitm attack but it does not make sense if the packets get not routed correctly?! I restarted the router but it didn't help. I have no access to the router, else I would change the shared key to make sure there is no intruder on the wifi.

  • Macbook OSX applications crashing on startup

    Closed my computer last night, went home. Opened it and it had restarted. Now when I open a couple programs such as Adobe Fireworks or Appcelerator Titanium they throw up a nasty error like below. Other programs (Chrome, Firefox, Textmate, Versions) works fine. Any thoughts on this? I haven't owned my Macbook long so I'm not even aware of the right tools or places to look to track this down. Any help would be most appreciated. It's making it hard to get my work done :] If it helps at all both those programs were probably open when it restarted. From the look of it I'm not sure if it's a permissions error or something?     I currently use the tsMuxeR for Windows within a VM on my Mac to mux MKV to M2TS to play on my PS3. tsMuxeR currently doesn't have a version that works with Snow Leopard, and I have not had any luck finding a native Mac application that will run on Snow Leopard that can do what tsMuxeR can. Does anyone know of a Snow Leopard compatible application that can mux MKV to M2TS?

It will start, (i.e. it will start a screen session) but in order to run byobu-config and probably in order to do some other things I need a module called snack which apparently is part of python newt. pip search newt and pip search snack return no results. newt and snack aren't in MacPorts or Brew either. I haven't found anything online in my searching with respect to installing newt on Mac OS X. Has anyone else been able to install byobu and newt in Mac OS X?

    The sync that Google offers for Google Contacts < Mac OS X Address Book is seriously flawed. It doesn't sync automatically, it doesn't sync all contacts, it doesn't sync all fields. See here for a list of warnings and issues. Is there a better way to sync Google Contacts to Mac Address Book bidirectionally? Preferably free, and preferably without adding extra software. I have tried to do it through Plaxo (which has an excellent Mac Address Book sync, albeit through an extra software install), but Plaxo doesn't handle Google Sync well (no updates). UPDATE: For the new Mac OS X Snow Leopard this shouldn't be an issue. This question is looking for a Leopard answer.

I cannot get into the Users\\library\keyboard layouts folder, as it won't let me (but I'm an admin FFS!) I even went into 'get info' and set it to 'everyone read and write' but it still tells me that I don't have permission How on earth can I update the other user's keyboard layout folder?

    I have recently got a Mac mini to do IPhone Dev on (like many others) and I am using the excellent Synergy to share one keyboard and mouse with 2 machines and 2 monitors. Everything is lovely and it works a treat. I got used to using the mac, and the alt key works like command button on the mac however one thing I cant figure out is the End key. I use this a lot on windows when wanting to jump to the end of a line of text, however if I press it over synergy on my mac it jumps to the end of the page. Anyone know the key combination I need to get what I want?

    Hello, I am running Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.2). Recently, my company switched (for whatever odd reason) from Cisco VPN (that used to work fine) to Aventail VPN. I proceeded to install the Aventail VPN client on both the mac and a Windows 7 machine, both on my home network. When I try to connect one or the other (I make sure one is disconnected before connecting through the other machine), I get a connection and view the correct certificate - accept it and Aventail tells me that I am connected. However, accessing any page inside my company's network is only possible on Windows. On the Mac I get the following page: http://grab.by/2WOA It looks like my ISP doesn't know how to redirect me? Maybe something about my DNS being set incorrectly on the Mac? Our helpdesk has been completely useless and I was hoping fellow super users can help. Thanks.

    I didn't know this was possible but it certainly seems slow when only using a Mac. I participate in the Symantec Connect forums regularly and when I get on it with my Windows PC or laptop it loads perfectly, but my Mac laptop the site rarely loads or if it does it takes a couple minutes for each page.   • Stream internal sound from mac to pc?

    I'm using a headphone connected to a PC, however, I also use a mac. I want to make it so that the internal sound, coming from the mac will also be heard over at the pc. So I want to convert the headphone to a somewhat central sound output where I hear both pc and mac's internal sounds. That includes error alerts, mp3s played on iTunes, etc. Is there an app that will let me do this? Just to clarify, the PC is running Windows XP.

  • Opinions on NTFS for Mac solution?

    I am currently using the free NTFS-3G to access my NTFS drive from the Mac. It seems pretty stable (except once in the very beginning, it locked up the Mac and corrupted my NTFS drive, which I then fixed with chkdsk from a PC). However, speed is NOT one of its virtues. In fact, it's painfully slow I've been looking at buying Paragon NTFS for Mac OS X 8.0. Their product comparison PDF claims nearly double the speed (vs NTFS-3G) in almost every category (read, write, etc...). In addition, there is now an unsupported native solution with the snow leopard. Can folks here share their experiences. Is the native solution stable enough to be used for daily work? Should I just go with Paragon?

  • Need Advice: What Linux distro should I install on an old PowerPC Mac

    I'm trying to set up my brother - who has a PPC mac, with 1 ghz processor and 256 ram, with a Linux distro that would allow him to surf the web on the device. If anyone knows of this mac, they also know that support has faded for the new browsers rendering the device essentially useless when it comes to the web. Ideally I would have installed jolicloud - but alas, it is only intel mac compatible... Please let me know if you have any suggestions for me!
