  • Domain joining debate for Outlook 2010 with Exchange 2007 on windows SBS 2008 for a user on a laptop that will travel a fair amount of the time.

    I'm basically debating on whether or not to join the Domain on a Laptop, and was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience. If the computer were staying in the office, its a no brainer. Join the domain. In this case I have a user who will come into the office a few days a week, and work remotely the rest of the time. There is a working VPN using OpenVPN client/server, but it's not site-to-site. My knee jerk reaction is to not join the domain, so that the user can have 1 profile that they always use. In this configuration, should Outlook work properly with the user's domain account, and should the shared calendar still work (at least once inside the VPN)? My concern with joining the domain would be the inability to login to it when elsewhere. Is there maybe a way around this with caching or something? Would creating a second local login make sense for a user like this in any way? If so, why not just skip the domain join to begin with? Any thoughts on or experiences with this would be appreciated.   • microsoft visual studio 2008 builds keep failing

    My builds keep failing with the following error Project : error PRJ0002 : Error result 31 returned from 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A\bin\mt.exe'. I find that i have to kill some process called mspdbsrv.exe description:"microsoft program database" Then rebuild the entire project. This is annoying. Is there a permanent solution to this problem or is it stuck with me for good? PS OS: windows 7 ultimate msv studio 2008 + sp1 professional

    I wanted some information about FAST ESP search engine. After failing to get any response from the email query system on Microsoft site I called their ore-sales phone number. The person there told me the only way they sell FAST ESP is as a bundled product with SharePoint. That really does not make any sense and contradicts all the PDF documents they have about FAST ESP on their site. Does anyone know who to contact at Microsoft to discuss this product?

We are having an issue with Word where it hangs on the splash screen for a particular user and no one else and would like to find out what is causing it to hang. Windows event viewer only shows that the application was terminated unexpectedly because of a hang.

  • Excel File Names not Displayed

    Problem: When excel windows are minimised, I can't see the file name, all I get is a rather unhelpful 'Microsoft Excel' proceeded by the file name. I have the taskbar docked on the left, and have second monitor that I use about 50% of the time, but can't work out what is causing the problem, or a setting that I can change that will remove the appended software name at the beginning of the file.   • OWA (Outlook Web Access) won't give user a link to attached document. Gives "Open as Web Page"

    I have been testing OWA and have found that when there is an attached file on a message it shows the "Attachments:" then the file name (but no link) and then [Open as Web Page] link. The user has to click on that which opens a new window and previews the document, then the user gets "You are currently viewing:" followed by the file name. This time the file name is a link that they can open/download. This happens for Office documents and PDF file at least. How do I make it so users can get a direct link to the file on the original message window?

  • Is there a way to get the size of Outlook Calendar meeting items?

    In our Exchange environment, our company caps the size of an Exchange account at a certain size. That size is the sum of all the exchange related stuff stored on the server - includign both the Inbox and the Calendar. I can tell with the Mailbox properties, Folder Size... window that my Calendar is a good 50% of my account's footprint. Is there any way to get a more detailed view of what meetings in the Calendar are taking up the space? Given the general pattern of incoming mail, it's my belief that 2-5 meetings are responsible for 75% of the memory consumption... I just need to find which meetings are the problem... and with my current calendar, it's a bit like finding a needle in a haystack. Anyone got a trick for this?

    I currently receive emails with a very very long subject line (generated by another system) of which I cannot see the end (specifically a date and time), despite widening the field as much as I can. Can anybody suggest how can I either see the end of the subject line and sort by these criteria or preferably move the date and time text from the end to the beginning of the subject line so I can sort by it, perhaps using VB?

  • Forced to use Outlook Web Access, what are my options?

    My company just enforced an OWA update and disabled IMAP and POP3 access. I don't want to use the webmail, do I have any options? Forwarding is also disabled. I also don't look forward to installing thunderbird or anything else, which is what colleagues are doing. I'd be interested in running some sort of automation script that either forwards the emails, or notifies me somehow that there has been some activity. Disclaimer: This does not concern any illegal activity, as I work at a school. They are not explicitly preventing me from circumventing their bogus security imposition and have given me permission to do so, 'if I can find a way'. Which of course makes me want to do it even more.
