  • Why does my program crash when given negative values?

    Alright, I am very confused, so I hope you friends can help me out. I'm working on a project using Cocos2D, the most recent version (.99 RC 1). I make some player objects and some buttons to change the object's life. But the weird thing is, the code crashes when I try to change their life by -5. Or any negative value for that matter, besides -1. It simply makes 4 buttons, puts them in each corner of the screen (size is the screen) and adds their life change ability, 1,-1,5, or -5. It adds them to the array and then goes through the array at the end and adds all of them to the screen. This works fine. It works for all of the buttons except the -5 one. And then, it gets to: NSLog(@"we change the life by %d.", [lifeChange integerValue]); And it crashes at that statement. It only crashes when given anything less than -1. -1 works, but nothing smaller does. Here is the code in the CustomCCNode Class, "changeLife" that is being called. - (void)changeLife:(int)lifeChange { NSLog(@"change life in Custom Class was called"); NSLog(@"wtf is lifechange: %d", lifeChange); life += lifeChange; lifeString = [[NSString alloc] initWithFormat:@"%d",life]; [text setString:lifeString]; } Straight forward, but when the NSnumber is -5, it doesn't even get called, it crashes at the NSlog statement. So... what's up with that?

    I'm trying to do a frame by frame animation with CAlayers. In Objective-C there some "special" types that are just maps to C primitives.   • Cocos2d: Moving background on update: offsett issue

    working with Objective C, iOS and Cocos2d I am developing a vertical scrolling shooter game for iPhone (retina display models with 640 width x 960 height pixel resolution). My basic algorithm works as following: I create two instances of an image that has exactly 640 width x 960 height pixel of resolution, which we will call imageA and imageB I then set the two imags with exactly 480.0f of offset from each other, as the screenSize of a CCScene is set by default to 480.0f. At each update method call I move the two images by the same value. I make sure that their offsett stays to 480.0f However when running the game I see a 1 pixel height line between the two images. This literally bugs me and would like to adjust this. What am I doing wrong? This is a zoom in on the background when the "offsett line" is visible. The white line you can see divides the two background images and is not meant to exist as both images are completely black :): If I change the yPositionOfSecondElement value to 479.0f until the first loop the two images overlap correctly, but as soon as the loop starts the two images starts having an offsett of -1.0f.     I have a method that is moving a UIImageView called shootImg across the screen: -(IBAction)shoot{ if (appDelegate.shootInt > 0) { if (direction == 1) { shootImg.center = CGPointMake(shootImg.center.x+1, shootImg.center.y); appDelegate.shootInt = appDelegate.shootInt - 1; shootLabel.text = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%d", appDelegate.shootInt]; } This does seem to work. But it only moves shootImage 1 pixel. What I want to do is make it repeatedly move 1 pixel. I tried a while loop but that didn't seem to work. I'm not using cocos2d or anything like that and if you need to see more code just ask. Thanks :)

    I'm using the following code in my viewDidLoad to load a sound: NSURL * url = [NSURL fileURLWithPath: [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%@/Moto - Hit Sound.mp3", [[NSBundle mainBundle] resourcePath]]]; NSError * error; hitSoundPlayer = [[AVAudioPlayer alloc]initWithContentsOfURL:url error:&error]; hitSoundPlayer.numberOfLoops = 0; Then I'm using this in a void method to play the sound: if(CGRectIntersectsRect(main.frame, enemy1.frame)){ [hitSoundPlayer play]; } This does seem to work, however the first time the sound is played there is a lot of lag and the game stops temporarily. I'm using this same method for when in an IBAction and it works fine, it must be the fact that it's also detecting a collision that makes the sound lag. If I want to be able to play sounds quickly and on the spot without any sort of lag am I doing the right thing? Do I want to use another method? I'm not using any frameworks like cocos2d.     So I'm trying to register for the MPMoviePlayerDidExitFullscreenNotification notification in my universal app (iPhone and iPad). Problem is, OS 3.1.3 doesn't support this notification, and just crashes.     Hi, I'm having a few problems with some Objective-C and would appreciate some pointers. It calls a method within fullGroupOfMaps, but if I step into the class from that line while debugging, all fullGroupOfMaps's objects are now out of scope and I get a crash. So apologies for the long question and big amount of code, but I guess my main question it: How should I handle a class with an NSMutableArray as an instance variable?     I am having a problem setting the background of UITableView to a UIImageView (see below for why I am doing this), once the view is set, it works fine, and scrolls with the UITableView, but it hides the elements of the Table View. I need to have a UIImageView as the background for a UITableView.     I'm hoping someone out there can back me up on this... I've been working on an application that allows the end user to record a small audio file for later playback and am in the process of testing for memory leaks. I continue to very consistently run into a memory leak when the AVAudioRecorder's "stop" method attempts to close the audio file to which it's been recording. This really seems to be a leak in the framework itself, but if I'm being a bonehead you can tell me. To illustrate, I've worked up a stripped down test app that does nothing but start/stop a recording w/ the press of a button.   • Objective-C wrapper API design methodology

    I know there's no one answer to this question, but I'd like to get people's thoughts on how they would approach the situation. I'm writing an Objective-C wrapper to a C library. My goals are: 1) The wrapper use Objective-C objects. For example, if the C API defines a parameter such as char *name, the Objective-C API should use name:(NSString *). 2) The client using the Objective-C wrapper should not have to have knowledge of the inner-workings of the C library. Speed is not really any issue. That's all easy with simple parameters. It's certainly no problem to take in an NSString and convert it to a C string to pass it to the C library. My indecision comes in when complex structures are involved. Let's say you have: struct flow { long direction; long speed; long disruption; long start; long stop; } flow_t; And then your C API call is: void setFlows(flow_t inFlows[4]); So, some of the choices are: 1) expose the flow_t structure to the client and have the Objective-C API take an array of those structures 2) build an NSArray of four NSDictionaries containing the properties and pass that as a parameter 3) create an NSArray of four "Flow" objects containing the structure's properties and pass that as a parameter My analysis of the approaches: Approach 1: Easiest. However, it doesn't meet the design goals Approach 2: For some reason, this seems to me to be the most "Objective-C" way of doing it. However, each element of the NSDictionary would have to be wrapped in an NSNumber. Now it seems like we're doing an awful lot just to pass the equivalent of a struct. Approach 3: Seems the cleanest to me from an object-oriented standpoint and the extra encapsulation could come in handy later. However, like #2, it now seems like we're doing an awful lot (creating an array, creating and initializing objects) just to pass a struct. So, the question is, how would you approach this situation? Are there other choices I'm not considering? Are there additional advantages or disadvantages to the approaches I've presented that I'm not considering?

  • UIWebView leak? Can someone confirm?

    I was leak-testing my current project and I'm stumped. I've been browsing like crazy and tried everything except chicken sacrifice. I just created a tiny toy project app from scratch and I can duplicate the leak in there. So either UIWebView has a leak or I'm doing something really silly. Essentially, it boils down to a loadRequest: call to a UIWebView object, given an URLRequest built from an NSURL which references a file URL, for a file in the app bundle, which lives inside a folder that Xcode is including by reference. Phew. The leak is intermittent but still happens ~75% of the time (in about 20 tests it happened about 15 times). It only happens on the device -- this does not leak in the simulator. I am testing targeting both iPhone OS 3.1.2 and 3.1.3, on an original (1st Gen) iPod Touch that is using iPhone OS 3.1.3. To reproduce, just create a project from scratch. Add a UIWebView to the RootViewController's .xib, hook it up via IBOutlet. In the Finder, create a folder named "html" inside your project's folder. Inside that folder, create a file named "dummy.html" that has the word "Test" in it. (Does not need to be valid HTML.) Then add the html folder to your project in Xcode by choosing "Create Folder References for any added folders" Add the following to viewDidLoad NSString* resourcePath = [[NSBundle mainBundle] resourcePath]; NSString* filePath = [[resourcePath stringByAppendingPathComponent:@"html"] stringByAppendingPathComponent:@"dummy.html"]; NSURL* url = [[NSURL alloc] initFileURLWithPath:filePath]; NSURLRequest* request = [NSURLRequest requestWithURL:url]; // <-- this creates the leak! [browserView loadRequest:request]; [url release]; I've tried everything from setting delegate for the UIWebView and implementing UIWebViewDelegate, to not setting a delegate in IB, to not setting a delegate in IB and explicitly setting the web view's delegate property to nil, to using alloc/init instead of getting autoreleased NSURLRequests (and/or NSURLs)... I tried the answer to a similar question (setting the shared URL cache to empty) and that did not help. Can anyone help?
