  • Job hopping etiquette

    I need to get out of a bad situation at my current work - I like the work, but they've been jerking me around with contract extensions coming at the last minute. I've been offered a job at a different company that doesn't look as interesting, but it's a chance to learn a few technologies I was interested in learning. It's "6 months contract to permanent" - does that mean that if I decide it's hopelessly boring and quit after the 6 month contract period that it won't reflect too badly on me and ruin my reputation in the town? What if I quit earlier than that? Edit I should mention that I don't think there will be one right answer, so rather than accepting one answer, I'm going to vote up the good ones.

  • Better way to kill a Form after the FormClosing event is overridden to hide rather than close?

    I have a simple Windows Form that hosts property controls at runtime. To keep the window and its contents alive rather than killing it by handling the FormClosing event, cancel the event and simply hide the form. That's fine but at close of the application I need to actually close the window. I implemented the below but it feels kludgey. Is there a simpler, more clever way to handle this situation? (The form's controller calls KillForm explicitly after it receives a closing event from the main window.)   • C++ Thread Safe Integer

    Hello everyone, I have currently created a C++ class for a thread safe integer which simply stores an integer privately and has public get a set functions which use a boost::mutex to ensure that only one change at a time can be applied to the integer. Is this the most efficient way to do it, I have been informed that mutexes are quite resource intensive? The class is used a lot, very rapidly so it could well be a bottleneck... Googleing C++ Thread Safe Integer returns unclear views and oppinions on the thread safety of integer operations on different architectures. Some say that a 32bit int on a 32bit arch is safe, but 64 on 32 isn't due to 'alignment' Others say it is compiler/OS specific (which I don't doubt). I am using Ubuntu 9.10 on 32 bit machines, some have dual cores and so threads may be executed simultaneously on different cores in some cases and I am using GCC 4.4's g++ compiler.     I have a html page with 10 columns but I don't have show all in same page instead I have to show only 4 column moreover I have to render those column on a button click call add column. What is the best approach to render 1-4 column first ? Fist column render first and on clicking button say add will render 2nd column , than 3rd and fourth. Now when i will load 5th column ...I will have to hide 1st column so that i will accommodate 4 columns but data inside that column will stay ....my limit is to show 4 column at a time and hiding leftmost .... any helpful javascript or jquery advice will be appreciated ..thanks!

    I'm using JQuery to make an Ajax call.     Say I have a web component that uses jQuery and I want to distribute it as a packaged component. I need a way to ensure that the jQuery library is available on or after the page loads, but I also want to check that the containing html page, or another unknown component that may reference jQuery hasn't already added the library to the page. Some of the features i'm looking to implement are: Single or multiple selection of objects Alignment of objects (when several are selected) Same-sizing of objects (when several are selected) Moving/dragging of selected object(s) Selected object resizing in eight directions (using object grips) For features and look-and-feel I've analyzed and used a mixture of ideas from: MS Visual Studio 200x (most useful so far) Visio Crystal Reports My question is: Have I overlooked some other IDEs that provide these kinds of features that are better and user-friendlier examples of what to do than others i've looked at? (They don't have to be Microsoft products. That's just what i have ready access to.)

    I need to initialise a set of vals, where the code to initialise them might throw an exception. I'd love to write: try { val x = ... generate x value ... val y = ... generate y value ... } catch { ... exception handling ... } ... use x and y ... But this (obviously) doesn't work because x and y aren't in scope outside of the try. It's easy to solve the problem by using mutable variables: var x: Whatever = _ var y: Whatever = _ try { x = ... generate x value ... y = ... generate y value ... } catch { ... exception handling ... } ... use x and y ... But that's not exactly very nice. It's also easy to solve the problem by duplicating the exception handling: val x = try { ... generate x value ... } catch { ... exception handling ... } val y = try { ... generate y value ... } catch { ... exception handling ... } ... use x and y ... But that involves duplicating the exception handling. There must be a "nice" way, but it's eluding me.

  • How do I modify the -encoding argument to javac in the Android Ant build system

    Apologies if this is a stupid question - I'm an Android and Ant newbie. I have utf8 encoded source files that I need to compile with the Android Ant build system. By default, the encoding is set to ascii. I'd be very grateful for a pointer to whatever I need to do to let the build system know that my files are utf8. Incidentally, it works fine if I build in Eclipse, but I need to build from the command line. Thanks!

  • How to filter Delphi 2010 compiler output (hints)?

    I'm trying to get rid of some hints(*) the Delphi compiler emits. Browsing through the ToolsAPI I see a IOTAToolsFilter that looks like it might help me accomplish this through it's Notifier, but I'm not sure how to invoke this (through what xxxServices I can access the filter). Can anyone tell me if I´m on the right track here? Thanks! (*) In particular, H2365 about overridden methods not matching the case of the parent. Not so nice when you have about 5 million lines of active code with a slightly different code convention than Embarcadero's. We've been working without hints for months now, and we kinda miss 'm. :-)

I can ping the record and it resolves correctly so i'm wondering if it is possible to use a DNS record?   • Javascript to fire event when a key pressed on the Ajax Toolkit Combo box.

    I have the following drop down list which is using the Ajax Toolkit to provide a combo box <cc1:ComboBox ID="txtDrug" runat="server" style="font-size:8pt; width:267px;" Font-Size="8pt" DropDownStyle="DropDownList" AutoCompleteMode="SuggestAppend" AutoPostBack="True" ontextchanged="txtDrug_TextChanged" /> Now I need to load this up with approx 7,000 records which takes a considerable time, and effects the response times when the page is posted back and forth. The code which loads these records is as follows; dtDrugs = wsHelper.spGetAllDrugs(); txtDrug.DataValueField = "pkDrugsID"; txtDrug.DataTextField = "drugName"; txtDrug.DataSource = dtDrugs; txtDrug.DataBind(); However if I could get an event to fire when a letter is typed instead of having to load 7000 records it is reduced to less than 50 in most instances. I think this can be done in Javascript. So the question is how can I get an event to fire such that when the form starts there is nothing in the drop down, but as soon as a key is pressed it searches for those records starting with that letter. The .Net side of things I'm sure about - it is the Javascript I'm not. Thanks in advance

    I'm attempting to host a WCF service in SharePoint. I have configured the service to be compatible with ASP.NET to allow me access to HttpContext and session information [AspNetCompatibilityRequirements(RequirementsMode = AspNetCompatibilityRequirementsMode.Required)] public class MISDataService : IMISDataService { ... } And my configuration looks like this <system.serviceModel> <serviceHostingEnvironment aspNetCompatibilityEnabled="true" /> <services> <service name="MISDataService"> <endpoint address="" binding="webHttpBinding" contract="MISDataViews.IMISDataService" /> </service> </services> </system.serviceModel> Whilst this gives me access to the current HTTP context, the serivce is always hosted under the root domain, i.e. http://www.mydomain.com/_layouts/MISDataService.svc. In SharePoint the URL being accessed gives you specific context information about the current site via the SPContext class. So with the service hosted in a virtual directory, I would like it to be available on mulitple addresses e.g. http://www.mydomain.com/_layouts/MISDataService.svc http://www.mydomain.com/sites/site1/_layouts/MISDataService.svc http://www.mydomain.com/sites/site2/_layouts/MISDataService.svc so that the service can figure out what data to return based upon the current context. Is it possible to configure the endpoint address dynamically? Or is the only alternative to host the service in one location and then pass the "context" to it some how?

    I have some user-specific data that I need to store in SharePoint and make accessible to the user through custom webparts. Let's say a list of favorite URLs. What would be the most straightforward way to store this information? Some builtin propertybag for SPUser or similar that I'm not aware of. SPList, associated through User column. Custom database table, associated through SPUser ID. Otherwise? Sounds like a RTFM to me, but I'm probably asking google the wrong questions.
