  Hi, I have been busy creating an app for Red5. Imagine what was my surprise when I tried to configure basic/digest authentication and I couldn't. What struck me as strange is that I have a running tomcat instance that works and authenticates correctly with the following xmls: web.xml (part of) <security-constraint> <web-resource-collection> <web-resource-name>A Protected Page</web-resource-name> <url-pattern>/stats.jsp</url-pattern> </web-resource-collection> <auth-constraint> <description/> <role-name>tomcat</role-name> </auth-constraint> </security-constraint> <login-config> <auth-method>DIGEST</auth-method> <realm-name>BLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA</realm-name> </login-config> <security-role> <description/> <role-name>tomcat</role-name> </security-role> and a tomcat-users.xml in /conf that looks kinda like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <tomcat-users> <role rolename="tomcat"/> <user username="ide" password="bogus" roles="tomcat"/> </tomcat-users> The annoying thing is that configuration authenticates correctly when on tomcat's servlet container, but on the red5's modified one, it just keeps asking for authentication. Am I becoming mad or it should work like a charm? Red5 is version 0_9_1 The stats.jsp is accessible in both servlet containers, the only difference is that when you input the correct password and username in tomcat, you are logged in, and in red5 you are not, it just keeps asking you for the password. Any pointers? Am I missing something? I was wondering where and how in red5.xml should I specify bean properties such that I force red5 to use MemoryRealm that is under /conf/tomcat-users.xml, because it certainly doesn't do so now. It seems like the biggest question I have posted so far, but I tried to explain it as fully as possible as to avoid confusion.

When my other colleagues check out the code, compile it and deploy it, they have the same problem. When the build server picks up the code and deploys it on development or testing environments (HPUX), the same error occurs. Also an automated testing machine running ubuntu shows the same error during server startup. The rest of the application runs ok, only that one servlet is out of order. Any ideas where to look would be helpful.

• A beginner question on passthru() function in PHP

  Hi all, I've used the following code to do an XSLT translation in PHP and save the result SVG file into a sub folder: $command = $java . $saxon . $target2 . ' ' . $xsl2.' '.$param; ob_start(); passthru($command, $result); $content_grabbed=ob_get_contents(); ob_end_clean(); $info = pathinfo($_FILES['file']['name']); $file_name= basename($_FILES['file']['name'],'.'.$info['extension']); $myFile = "images/convert/".$file_name."_".$_POST["mydropdown"].".svg"; $fh = fopen($myFile, 'w') or die("can't open file"); fwrite($fh, $content_grabbed); fclose($fh); It does a very simple SVG to SVG transformation, and created the resulting SVG file. the $command is just a simple java -jar saxon.jar input.xml stylesheet java command. The current situation is ,the file gets created perfectly, however, the error gets shown in browser, probably because I inserted the "ob_start" before passthru() command. I am thinking of making use of an argument that comes with the saxon.jar, that is "-o output_file_name". Because the final purpose is not to display the resulting SVG to the browser, but instead creating an SVG file ,and provide the link to the user for downloading. Are there any better ways to handle this problem, I am still thinking about how to get rid of the result that gets shown in the browser that is sent by the "passthru()".   I'm setting up a new server with PHP 5.3.9 and nginx, so I compiled PHP with the php-fpm SAPI options. For added security I wanted to chroot my FPM instance, so I added the following lines to my conf file for this FPM instance: # FPM config chroot = /var/www/clients/domain.com and changed the nginx config: #nginx config for chroot location ~\.php$ { fastcgi_pass 127.0.0.1:9001; fastcgi_index index.php; fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME www/public$fastcgi_script_name; fastcgi_param PATH_INFO $fastcgi_script_name; include /etc/nginx/fastcgi_params; } With those changes, nginx gives me a File not found message for any PHP scripts. Looking in the error log I can see that it's prepending the root path to my DOCUMENT_ROOT variable that's passed to fastcgi, so I tried to override it in the location block like this: fastcgi_param DOCUMENT_ROOT /www/public/; fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME $fastcgi_script_name; but I still get the same error, and the debug log shows the full, unchrooted path being sent to PHP-FPM. What am I missing to get this to work?

I used this tutorial to install NGINX / PHP / mySQL / WordPress: C3M Digital Tutorial In this tutorial the backend php-cgi setup is configured using fastcgi. php5-fpm was installed during this tutorial: apt-get install nginx-full php5-fpm php5 php5-mysql php5-apc php5-mysql php5-xsl php5-xmlrpc php5-sqlite php5-snmp php5-curl After reading that the NGINX configuration on the WordPress codec was more secure than most tutorials, I decided to use the codex configuration: WordPress NGINX configuration in Codex The Codex configuration uses php-fpm for backend php-cgi. When opening the browser I got a 502 Bad Gateway error. Seems I missed configuring php-fpm to play with NGINX. Can someone point me in the right direction? Much appreciated!

  I'm running PHP 5.3, FastCGI, and IIS 7 on Windows Server 2008. I have a site which I would like to configure its own php.ini settings for but things aren't working as expected. I am following the tutorial located here. This is what I have done so far: 1) Configured a new website with it's own AppPool. 2) Selected PHP 5.3.6 from the PHP Manager available on the website home on IIS (not the web server home which sets the global version of PHP) 3) Added the following lines to the section of the applicationHost.config file located at system32/inetsrv/config <application fullPath="C:\Program Files (x86)\PHP\v5.3\php-cgi.exe" arguments="-d open_basedir=C:\inetpub\wwwroot\kickasswebsite.com" maxInstances="4" idleTimeout="300" activityTimeout="30" requestTimeout="90" instanceMaxRequests="200" protocol="NamedPipe" queueLength="1000" flushNamedPipe="false" rapidFailsPerMinute="10"> <environmentVariables> <environmentVariable name="PHPRC" value="c:\inetpub\wwwroot\kickasswebsite.com" /> </environmentVariables> </application> 4) I then create a php.ini file located in C:\inetpub\wwwroot\kickasswebsite.com (the location of the root of the website) register_globals = on 5) I then run test.php which simply outputs everything the method call to phpinfo() returns. • nginx giving 404 when accessing php from alias directory

  I am trying to migrate from apache to nginx. The php sites that I am hosting need to access a shared library which turns out to be an alias directory.   I using the following as Frontpage/Page Controller(s) and it's working ok so far, except two problems I'm facing which as you can see are the $pages array and the switch, which are actually much much longer as the one I've pasted here. Everytime there is a need for a new page controller I have to add it to $pages array and to switch which makes that list very long. • XMPP— openfire,PHP and python web service

  I am planning to integrate real time notifications into a web application that I am currently working on. I have decided to go with XMPP for this and selected openfire server which i thought to be suitable for my needs. The front end uses strophe library to fetch the notifications using BOSH from my openfire server. However the notices are the notifications and other messages are to be posted by my application and hence I think this code needs to reside at the backend. Initially I thougt of going with PHP XMPP libraries like XMPHP and JAXL but then I think that this would cause much overhead as each script will have to do same steps like connection, authentication etc. and I think this would make the PHP end a little slow and unresponsive. Now I am thinking of creating a middle-ware application acting as a web service that the PHP will call and this application will handle the stuff with XMPP service. The benefit with this is that this app(a server if you will) will have to connect just once and the it will sit there listening on a port. also I am planning to build it in a asynchronous way such that It will first take all the requests from my PHp app and then when there are no more requests; go about doing the notification publishing stuff. I am planninng to create this service in Python using SleekXMPP. This is just what I planned. I am new to XMPP and this whole web service stuff ans would like to take your comments on this regarding issues like memory and CPU usage, advantages, disadvantages, scalability issues,security etc. Thanks in advance. PS:-- also if something like this already exists(although I didn't find after a lot of Googling) Please direct me there. EDIT --- The middle-level service should be doing the following(but not limited to): 1. Publishing notifications for different level of groups and community pages. 2. Notification for single user on some event. 3. User registration(can be done using user service plugin though). EDIT --- Also it should like to create pub-sub nodes and subscribe and unsubscribe users from these pub-sub nodes. Also I want to store the notifications and messages in a database(openfire doesn't). Would that be a good choice?

  I am building a moderation panel from scratch in a MVC approach and a lot of questions cropped up during development. I would like to hear from others how they handle these situations. Error handling Should you handle an error inside the class method or should the method return something anyway and you handle the error in controller? What about PDO exceptions, how to handle them? For example, let's say we have a method that returns true if the user exists in a table and false if he does not exist. What do you return in the catch statement? You can't just return false because then the controller assumes that everything is alright while the truth is that something must be seriously broken. Displaying the error from the method completely breaks the whole design. Maybe a page redirect inside the method? The proper way to show a view The controller right now looks something like this: include('view/header.php'); if ($_GET['m']=='something') include('view/something.php'); elseif ($_GET['m']=='somethingelse') include('view/somethingelse.php'); include('view/foter.php'); Each view also checks if it was included from the index page to prevent it being accessed directly. There is a view file for each different document body. Is this way of including different views ok or is there a more proper way? Managing user rights Each user has his own rights, what he can see and what he can do. Which part of the system should verify that user has the permission to see the view, controller or view itself? Right now I do permission checks directly in the view because each view can contain several forms that require different permissions and I would need to make a seperate file for each of them if it was put in the controller. I also have to re-check for the permissions everytime a form is submitted because form data can be easily forged. The truth is, all this permission checking and validating the inputs just turns the controller into a huge if/then/else cluster. I feel like 90% of the time I am doing error checks/permissions/validations and very little of the actual logic. Is this normal even for popular frameworks?

You can ignore this warning and save the file anyway, but if an error occurs while saving, you could lose the old copy of the file. Save anyway?

From PHP API Reference guide: http://libvirt.org/php/api-reference.html I have seen these functions: (i) libvirt_image_create($conn, $name, $size, $format) (ii) libvirt_domain_new($conn, $name, $arch, $memMB, $maxmemMB, $vcpus, $iso_image, $disks, $networks, $flags) (iii) libvirt_domain_create($res) (iv) libvirt_domain_create_xml($conn, $xml) The problem I am facing is that i dont know the steps to create a new domain. Either I have to create a new image first using libvirt_image_create .... or something else.

• PHP `virtual()` with Apache MultiViews not working after upgrade to 12.04

  I use PHP's virtual() directive quite a lot on one of my sites, including central elements. This worked fine for the last ~10 years -- but after upgrading to 12.04 it somehow got broken. Example setup (simplified) To make it easier to understand, I simplify some things (contents). So say I need a HTML fragment like <P>For further instructions, please look <A HREF='foobar'>here</P> in multiple pages. 10 years ago, I used SSI for that, so it is put into a file in a central place -- so if e.g. the targeted URL changes, I only need to update it in one place. To serve multiple languages, I have Apache's MultiViews enabled -- and at $DOCUMENT_ROOT/central/ there are the files: foobar.html (English variant, and the default) foobar.html.de (German variant). Now in the PHP code, I simply placed: <? virtual("/central/foobar"); ?> and let Apache take care to deliver the correct language variant. The problem As said, this worked fine for about 10 years: German visitors got the German variant, all others the English (depending on their preferred language). But after upgrading to Ubuntu 12.04, it no longer worked: Either nothing was delivered from the virtual() command, or (in connection with framesets) it even ended up in binary gibberish. Trying to figure out what happens, I played with a lot of things. I first thought MultiViews was (somehow) not available anymore -- but calling http://<server>/central/foobar showed the right variant, depending on the configured language preferences. This also proved there was nothing wrong with file permissions. The error.log gave no clues either (no error message thrown). Finally, just as a "last ressort", I changed the PHP command to <? virtual("central/foobar.html"); ?> -- and that very same file was in fact included. But the language dependend stuff obviously did no longer work. Of course I tried to find some change (most likely in PHP's virtual() command), using Google a lot, and also searching the questions here -- unfortunately to no avail. Finally: The question Putting "design questions" aside (surely today I would design things differently -- but at least currently I miss the time to change that for a quite huge amount of pages): What can be done to make it work again? I surely missed something -- but I cannot figure out what...
