    Does Facebook provide access to any real time APIs so that you can respond to events as soon as they happen? If not, what alternatives are there and what are their limitations? For example, if I use polling instead, will they limit my api calls? And if I try using RSS feeds, about how much delay can I expect? Or maybe it would be possible to receive and process email notifications (if I could convince a user to forward mail to another email address), as they seem to be dispatched pretty promptly?

    Looking for guidelines to create application file. For example I have an application that store user input into a file (Textbox, DataGrid, ListBox etc). I'm looking for WPF-C# implementation. I would like to have the following: If user edit a any form(Textbox, etc) an asterisk is displayed to the window title. When window is closed and asterisk is still there, a promote "Would you like to save changes" appears. If then saved the asterisk disappear. What do real applications use to create their application file? (Note: I'm not looking for database saving or SQL) I'm just looking for hints and guidelines. Thank you.

  • Learn Cloud Computing – It’s Time

    Last week, I gave an in-house presentation on cloud computing.  I walked through an overview of cloud computing – characteristics (on demand, elastic, fully managed by provider), why are we interested (virtualization, distributed computing, increased access to high-speed internet, weak economy), various types (public, private, virtual private cloud) and services models (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS.)  Though numerous providers have emerged in the cloud computing space, the presentation focused on Amazon, Google and Microsoft offerings and provided an overview of their platforms, costs, data tier technologies, management and security.  One of the biggest talking points was why developers should consider the cloud as part of their deployment strategy: You only have to pay for what you consume You will be well-positioned for one time event provisioning You will reap the benefits of automated growth and scalable technologies For the record: having deployed dozens of applications on various platforms over the years, pricing tends to be the biggest customer concern.  Yes, scalability is a customer consideration, too, but it comes in distant second.  Boy do I hope you’re still reading… You may be thinking, “Cloud computing is well and good and it sounds catchy, but should I bother?  After all, it’s just another technology bundle which I’m supposed to ramp up on because it’s the latest thing, right?”  Well, my clients used to be 100% reliant upon me to find adequate hosting for them.  Now I find they are often aware of cloud services and some come to me with the “possibility” that deploying to the cloud is the best solution for them.  It’s like the patient who walks into the doctor’s office with their diagnosis and treatment already in mind thanks to the handful of Internet searches they performed earlier that day.  You know what?  The customer may be correct about the cloud. It may be a perfect fit for their app.  But maybe not…  I don’t think there’s a need to learn about every technical thing under the sun, but if you are responsible for identifying hosting solutions for your customers, it is time to get up to speed on cloud computing and the various offerings (if you haven’t already.)  Here are a few references to get you going: DZone Refcardz #82 Getting Started with Cloud Computing by Daniel Rubio Wikipedia Cloud Computing – What is it? The popcon.ubuntu.com site has raw information on how many people (who have installed popularity-contest) have installed a particular package, but it would be interesting to see how a package's popularity changes over time. I remember using a website that graphed this, but I don't know if it still exist.

  • What units does the ntp drift file use?

    When the ntpd daemon is running, the file: /var/lib/ntp/ntp.drift gets updated periodically. Example: 17:20 hostname 118 ~> ls -l /var/lib/ntp/ntp.drift -rw-r--r-- 1 ntp ntp 7 May 20 16:46 /var/lib/ntp/ntp.drift # So it looks like it was last updated ~34 minutes ago The file has one number in it, for example, looking at a 4 virtual hosts, I find these values, respectively: -22.086 -10.214 -13.669 6.045 I assume these are seconds per day(?), but not sure. man ntpd mentions a different drift file /etc/ntp.drift which doesn't seem to exist. The man page doesn't explain what units are being used for the drift. Questions: Is /etc/ntp.drift actually /var/lib/ntp/ntp.drift on Ubuntu? What units is the drift expressed in? Thanks!

  • How can I permanently fix my date synchronize problem in linux?

    Ubuntu 7.10 server i386 clock/date/time won't stay in sync. Are their log files I can view to tell when the clock changes? For a temporary fix, I created a file in /etc/cron.hourly: #!/bin/sh ntpdate time.nist.gov However, this still leaves a potential hour of unchecked time. Is there a cron.minutely? That would still leave a potential minute of unchecked time. I have read about CMOS battery problems, but what if this does not fix it? I'd like to be able to troubleshoot this as a completely software problem. My squid logs are showing dates back in 2005 when the clock changes, and my time-sensitive access controls are skewed and end up allowing users to surf prohibited websites during business hours.

    I have Ubuntu 13.10 set up on an older PC. If I am logged in as a user, then the screen timeout and power saving mode works as expected. However, if nobody is logged in, the screen never times out, and the monitor stays on all the time with the login screen. How can I adjust Ubuntu 13.10 so that the login screen also times out after a minute or so? I don't want the monitor's power saving mode to be disabled just because nobody is currently logged in.

  • BIOS password and hardware clock problems

    I have HP 6730b lap top. I've bought it used and installed (Gentoo) linux on it. BIOS is protected with password, and guy I bought it from said "I've tweaked BIOS from Windows program, it never asked me for password". I've tried to erase password by removing battery, but it's still there. What did get erased obviously is hw clock. This is what hapends: a) I can leave lap top in January 1980 and it works b) I can correct system time, but boot wil fail with "superblock mount time in future" from where I need to manually do fsck and continue boot c) I can correct system time and sync it with hwclock -w but than it will behave as b) and it will reset BIOS time to 1.1.1980 00:00 So I need either a way to bypass a BIOS password (wich after lot of googling seems impossible),a way to persist a clock, or a setup that will enable hw clock in eighties, system clock in present time and normal boot.

  • Ralink-based USB Wi-Fi adapter drops connection after some time

    I have an Intellinet Wireless 150N USB adapter (based on a Ralink rt3070 chip) in an Ubuntu 10.10 installation. The problem is, that it's dropping the connection after being connected to a wireless network for 10 - 20 minutes. I have to unplug it and plug it in again every time this happens. I read somewhere, that I need to blacklist some chipset modules, but I don't how? And which ralink modules I have to blacklist? Thanks for your answers! :D

What did you learn in school that you didn't care about at the time, but turned out to be useful or you had to relearn in the workplace because you had it in school, but didn't retain the information and you needed it? (I mean for software related jobs.) I think this might help college students identify some of what they really should be paying attention to while they are in school.

  • Why is my NTP controlled computer clock two minutes ahead?

    The clock in my computer is configured to be synchronized using NTP. To verify this I have tried two NTP clients using various NTP servers. My computer and the NTP clients are in complete agreement about the current time even across a wide range of NTP servers. I also have a GPS and my national phone company provides an accurate clock available by calling a specific phone number. Both my GPS and the phone company agrees on the current time. However, my computer is almost precisely two minutes (or 1 minute and 59 seconds) ahead of what I believe to be the "real" current time where I live. Why is my computer two minutes ahead? I realize that synchronizing clocks using the internet may not be entirely accurate as there is latency, but two minutes is a very long time on the internet. Is NTP really two minutes ahead? I'm running Windows 7 and live in the time zone UTC+1, but I don't think that is important in understanding my problem.
