ASP.NET 2.0 RijndaelManaged encryption algorithm vs. FIPS

I'm running into an issue with an ASP.NET 2.0 application. Our network folks just upped our security, and now I get the floowing error whenever I try to access the app: "This implementation is not part of the Windows Platform FIPS validated cryptographic algorithms." I've done a little research, and it sounds like ASP.NET uses the RijndaelManaged AES encryption algorithm to encrypt the ViewState of pages... and RijndaelManaged is on the list of algorithms that aren't FIPS compliant. We're certainly not explicitly calling any encryption algorithm... much less anything on the non-compliant list. This ViewState business makes sense to me, I guess. The thing I can't muddle out, though, is what to do about it. I've found a KB article that suggests using a web.config setting to specify a different algorithm... but either that didn't stick, or that algorithm isn't up to snuff, either. So: 1) Is the RijndaelManaged / ViewState thing actually the problem? Or am I barking up the wrong tree? 2) How to I specify what algorithm to use instead of RijndaelManaged? I've got a list of algorithms that are and aren't compliant; I'm just not sure where to plug that information in. Thanks! Richard

Custom title of PreferenceActivity (problem)

I have the same problem like this question: Custom title bar in PreferenceActivity ?? After extending PreferenceActivity, I write this code in onCreate(), it just shows a blank grey title. Eclipse does not refresh project files in package explorer view

Today I see a strange behaviour of Eclipse 3.5.2 for the first time in 3 months. First, when I run a main function, it runs a previously compiled version. Let's say I press Ctrl+F11 in the window with an open java class and existing main function. Usually it rebuilds the class and runs a new version. Today even if there was a compile mistake, it would run fine. So I guess it does not recompile the class. Next, more strangely, if I intentionally make a mistake in the code and Eclipse underlines those lines in red, still the project Explorer does not mark them as containing errors. They remain of grey color if there were not any errors. First I did not know how to solve this problem. I tried to reopen the project, restart Eclipse and finally reboot the OS. After the tenth attempt, after rebooting, Eclipse said that all project's files are "OUT OF SYNC with the file system". When I pressed "Refresh" - F5 on a project's header name in Project Explorer it finally marked all the files with errors as containing errors and running the main function gave the desired result. An hour of my work passed and this happened again , with the other project. All the same. No marking of files as red, running no matter what old version of class with no compile errors. And since Eclipse does not tell that files are out of sync, simply pressing F5 on a project cannot help. What can you suggest?

iReport / jFreeChart - Combining getItemPaint() override and series colors

I'm attempting to create a bar chart that needs to use specific series colors for N number of categories and a separate color for 1 other category. Here is an example: http://i.imgur.com/1DeCF.png (Sorry, I don't have enough points to embed images yet) In the mockup, Categories 1-3 use a collection of 5 colors to render their series while Category 4 uses a single grey color. My first approach was to override the getItemPaint() method using a customizer class, but I can only figure out how to define a color on the category level, not the series level. Is it possible to define colors on category and/or series levels? Something like, If category != "Category4" Use colors A, B, C, D, and E in category's series Else Use color F in category's series Another thought I had was to combine iReport's Series Colors bar chart property and the getItemPaint() override; that way I could define the 5 colors to use in iReport and use the getItemPaint() override only in the case where the category equals "Category 4". So far I've had no luck combining the two; if the override is defined it overrides iReport's Series Color property.

WPF Textbox & Borders - curious resizing behavior

The following XAML produces a window with strange behavior around the textbox: <Window x:Class="WpfSandbox.CuriousExample" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" Title="CuriousExample" Height="300" Width="300"> <DockPanel Margin="15"> <TextBox BorderThickness="1" BorderBrush="#FF000000"></TextBox> </DockPanel> </Window> What happens, at least during my limited testing, is that the textbox renders with an inset border pattern (top/left is black, right/bottom is grey). However, when you resize to any position except the original, the entire textbox border goes to black. Whenever you return the window to the exact number of on-screen pixels the form had when it first loaded, it's inset again. RelativeLayout differences between 1.5 and 2.1

I've got a ListView with items composed of RelativeLayouts. The small grey line on the top left is what shows up in the first pic as "xx", so that should be vertically centered. As far as I can see, the XML dictates this, but for some reason, 1.5 ignores it. Why is this? I can't find anything about this difference, and I've been brute forcing any combination of layout_center, center, alignParent*, but to no avail... Can anyone shed some light on this? Floating point precision in Visual C++

HI, I am trying to use the robust predicates for computational geometry from Jonathan Richard Shewchuk. I am not a programmer, so I am not even sure of what I am saying, I may be doing some basic mistake. The point is the predicates should allow for precise aritmthetic with adaptive floating point precision. On my computer: Asus pro31/S (Core Due Centrino Processor) they do not work. The problem may stay in the fact the my computer may use some improvements in the floating point precision taht conflicts with the one used by Shewchuk. The author says: /* On some machines, the exact arithmetic routines might be defeated by the / / use of internal extended precision floating-point registers. Sometimes / / this problem can be fixed by defining certain values to be volatile, / / thus forcing them to be stored to memory and rounded off. This isn't / / a great solution, though, as it slows the arithmetic down. */ Now what I would like to know is that there is a way, maybe some compiler option, to turn off the internal extended precision floating-point registers. I really appriaciate your help

Forms/AD Authentication with Sharepoint

All, I'm configuring Sharepoint to use forms authentication with LDAP/Active Directory. I'm new to Sharepoint, so if this is obvious, please point me in the right direction. Whenever I attempt to log in with a bad account or password, I get the very friendly (and correct) error message, The server could not sign you in. Make sure your user name and password are correct, and then try again. ... which implies that Sharepoint is able to communicate with AD. If I log in with a valid account, I get a page that says: (I added the grey bar to cover up the login name) Any suggestions? The account I'm logging in with is an administrator and has been granted full control in central administration. Also, interesting note: If I click the "sign in as a different user" link, and attempt to sign in using with the same credentials I just used, the site just redirects back to the login page, with no error or status message. If I then manually enter the site url, it again shows the "Error: Access Denied" page. Argh.

Why is it assumed that send may return with less than requested data transmitted on a blocking socke

The standard method to send data on a stream socket has always been to call send with a chunk of data to write, check the return value to see if all data was sent and then keep calling send again until the whole message has been accepted. For example this is a simple example of a common scheme: int send_all(int sock, unsigned char *buffer, int len) { int nsent; while(len 0) { nsent = send(sock, buffer, len, 0); if(nsent == -1) // error return -1; buffer += nsent; len -= nsent; } return 0; // ok, all data sent } Even the BSD manpage mentions that ...If no messages space is available at the socket to hold the message to be transmitted, then send() normally blocks... Which indicates that we should assume that send may return without sending all data. Now I find this rather broken but even W. Richard Stevens assumes this in his standard reference book about network programming, not in the beginning chapters, but the more advanced examples uses his own writen (write all data) function instead of calling write. Now I consider this still to be more or less broken, since if send is not able to transmit all data or accept the data in the underlying buffer and the socket is blocking, then send should block and return when the whole send request has been accepted. I mean, in the code example above, what will happen if send returns with less data sent is that it will be called right again with a new request. What has changed since last call? At max a few hundred CPU cycles have passed so the buffer is still full. If send now accepts the data why could'nt it accept it before? Otherwise we will end upp with an inefficient loop where we are trying to send data on a socket that cannot accept data and keep trying, or else? So it seems like the workaround, if needed, results in heavily inefficient code and in those circumstances blocking sockets should be avoided at all an non blocking sockets together with select should be used instead.

Insane Graphics.lineStyle behavior

Hi all, I'd like some help with a little project of mine. Background: i have a little hierarchy of Sprite derived classes (5 levels starting from the one, that is the root application class in Flex Builder). Width and Height properties are overriden so that my class always remembers it's requested size (not just bounding size around content) and also those properties explicitly set scaleX and scaleY to 1, so that no scaling would ever be involved. After storing those values, draw() method is called to redraw content. Drawing: Drawing is very straight forward. Only the deepest object (at 1-indexed level 5) draws something into this.graphics object like this: var gr:Graphics = this.graphics; gr.clear(); gr.lineStyle(0, this.borderColor, 1, true, LineScaleMode.NONE); gr.beginFill(0x0000CC); gr.drawRoundRectComplex(0, 0, this.width, this.height, 10, 10, 0, 0); gr.endFill(); Further on: There is also MouseEvent.MOUSE_WHEEL event attached to the parent of the object that draws. What handler does is simply resizes that drawing object. Problem: Screenshot When resizing sometimes that hairline border line with LineScaleMode.NONE set gains thickness (quite often even 10 px) + it quite often leaves a trail of itself (as seen in the picture above and below blue box (notice that box itself has one px black border)). When i set lineStile thickness to NaN or alpha to 0, that trail is no more happening. I've been coming back to this problem and dropping it for some other stuff for over a week now. Any ideas anyone? P.S. Grey background is that of Flash Player itself, not my own choise.. :D

Server.Execute(path).. executed page returns the calling pages' url from request.url..

Hey, As explained in the title, I am having a problem with getting the URL of the page being executed from within a page. Basically I have a dynamic catalogue, where customers select products they are interested in. The manager of the company I am doing this for would like to be able to create an up to date offline catalogue at any given time, to send out to customers who dont have an internet connection. So far its going really well. I am using Server.Execute to get the content for each page, then putting it in static html pages and changing the dynamic links to static html links (ie changing all aspx links to htm). I am able to output all the pages for about us, contact us, home, and the entire catalogue. However, one of the stylesheets which is included in the page based on the URL (if the page is in the administration section then it is not included, otherwise it is) is not being included in the pages when it should be. I have tried outputting the URL but it just returns the URL of the calling page, not the page being called. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? Any help would be greatly appreciated. QPainter declared inside a run function creates artifact.

I am rendering a QPixmap inside of a QThread. the code to paint is inside a function. If I declare the painter inside the drawChart function everything seems ok but if I declare the painter inside the run function the image is wrong in the sense that at the edge of a black and white area, the pixels at the interface are overlapped to give a grey. Does anyone know why this is so? Use of var keyword in C#

After discussion with colleagues regarding the use of the 'var' keyword in C# 3 I wondered what people's opinions were on the appropriate uses of type inference via var? For example I rather lazily used var in questionable circumstances, e.g.:- foreach(var item in someList) { // ... } // Type of 'item' not clear. var something = someObject.SomeProperty; // Type of 'something' not clear. var something = someMethod(); // Type of 'something' not clear. More legitimate uses of var are as follows:- var l = new List<string>(); // Obvious what l will be. var s = new SomeClass(); // Obvious what s will be. Interestingly LINQ seems to be a bit of a grey area, e.g.:- var results = from r in dataContext.SomeTable select r; // Not *entirely clear* what results will be here. It's clear what results will be in that it will be a type which implements IEnumerable, however it isn't entirely obvious in the same way a var declaring a new object is. It's even worse when it comes to LINQ to objects, e.g.:- var results = from item in someList where item != 3 select item; This is no better than the equivilent foreach(var item in someList) { // ... } equivilent. There is a real concern about type safety here - for example if we were to place the results of that query into an overloaded method that accepted IEnumerable<int> and IEnumerable<double> the caller might inadvertently pass in the wrong type. Edit - var does maintain strong typing but the question is really whether it's dangerous for the type to not be immediately apparent on definition, something which is magnified when overloads mean compiler errors might not be issued when you unintentionally pass the wrong type to a method. Using Custom MapType with Google Maps API

I realise there are a couple of examples such as Maoki's Add Your Own Custom Map and Mike Williams' [link text][Google Maps API Tutorial] however I have looked at these and still end up with a Grey box. The API will not call my "getTileUrl" callback function. Django: Serving Media Behind Custom URL

So I of course know that serving static files through Django will send you straight to hell but I am confused on how to use a custom url to mask the true location of the file using Django. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2681338/django-serving-a-download-in-a-generic-view but the answer I accepted seems to be the "wrong" way of doing things. urls.py: url(r'^song/(?P<song_id>\d+)/download/$', song_download, name='song_download'), views.py: def song_download(request, song_id): song = Song.objects.get(id=song_id) fsock = open(os.path.join(song.path, song.filename)) response = HttpResponse(fsock, mimetype='audio/mpeg') response['Content-Disposition'] = "attachment; filename=%s - %s.mp3" % (song.artist, song.title) return response This solution works perfectly but not perfectly enough it turns out. How can I avoid having a direct link to the mp3 while still serving through nginx/apache? EDIT 1 - ADDITIONAL INFO Currently I can get my files by using an address such as: http://www.example.com/music/song/1692/download/ But the above mentioned method is the devil's work. How can I accomplished what I get above while still making nginx/apache serve the media? Is this something that should be done at the webserver level? How best to implement "favourites" feature? (like favourite products on a data driven website)

Hi, I have written a dynamic database driven, object oriented website with an administration frontend etc etc. I would like to add a feature where customers can save items as "favourites", without having to create an account and login, to come back to them later, but I dont know how exactly to go about doing this... I see three options: Log favourites based on IP address and then change these to be logged against an account if the customer then creates an account; Force customers to create an account to be able to use this functionality; Log favourites based on IP address but give users the option to save their favourites under a name they specify. The problem with option 1 is that I dont know much about IP addresses - my Dad thinks they are unique, but I know people have had problems with systems like this. The problem with 1 and 2 is that accounts have not been opened up to customers yet - only administrators can log in at the moment. It should be easy to alter this (no more than a morning or afternoons work) but I would also have to implement usergroups too. The problem with option 3 is that if user A saves a favourites list called "My Favourites", and then user B tries to save a list under this name and it is refused, user B will then be able to access the list saved by user A because they now know it already exists. A solution to this is to password protect lists, but to go to all this effort I may as well implement option 2. Of course I could always use option 4; use an alternative if anyone can suggest a better solution than any of the above options. So has anyone ever done something like this before? If so how did you go about it? What do you recommend (or not recommend)? Many thanks in advance, Regards, Richard

"Unable to open file", when the program tries to open file in /proc

Hi, I try to read file /proc/'pid'/status, using c program. The code is as follows, and even I use sudo to run it, the prompt still keeps throwing "Unable to open file". jQuery UI + Gmaps = Problems (for me at least) HELP!!

Hi there! I started using jQuery as soon as I found out about it, it is very powerfull but I started struggling when I tried to load Gmaps api into the tabs jQuery UI brings. Strangly enough in IE 6,7,8 it works fine, but in Firefox, Safari (I'm using mac but tested it in windows and they both give the same problems) the map doesn't load entirely. When I click on the tab where the map loads in, only part of the map is fully operational, the rest is grey and not clickable. Please take a look at the link below and click the third tab in firefox/safari and IE and you will see the problem. http://movewithusoverseas.com/index-new.php?z=product-info.html&pid=1 I don't know if it is a bug in the jQuery UI code or I'm doing something wrong. JavaScript snippet to read and output XML file on page load?

Hey guys, hoping I might get some help. Have XML file here of a list of books each with unique id and numeral value for whether they are checked out or not. I need a JavaScript snippet that requests the XML file after the page loads and displays the content of the XML file. Getting a lightweight installation of java eclipse.

Having dealt with yet another stupid eclipse problem, I want to try to get the lightest, most minimal eclipse installation as possible. To be clear, I use eclipse for two things: - Editing Java - Debugging Java Everything else I do through emacs/zsh (editing jsp/xml/js, file management, svn check-in, etc). I have not found any aspect of working in eclipse to do these tasks to be efficient or even reliable, so I do not want plug-ins that relate to it. From the eclipse.org site, this is the lightest install of eclipse that they have, and I don't want any of those things (bugzilla, mylyn, cvs, xml_ui), and have actually had problems with each of them even though I do not use them. So what is the minimal build I can get that will: 1) Ignore svn metadata 2) Includes the full-featured editor (intellisense and type-finding) 3) Includes the full-featured debugger (standard eclipse/jdk) Does not have any extra plug-ins, platforms, or "integrations" with other platforms, specifically, I don't want to deal with plug-ins relating to: Maven, JSP Validation, Javascript editing or validation, CVS or SVN, Mylyn, Spring or Hibernate "natures", app servers like a bundled tomcat/glassfish/etc, J2EE tools, or anything of the like. I do primarily spring/hibernate/web-mvc apps, and have never dealt with an eclipse plug-in that handles any of it gracefully, I can work effectively with my own toolset, but eclipse extensions do nothing but get in the way. I have worked with plain eclipse up to Ganymede, MyEclipse (up to 7.5), and the latest version of Spring-SourceTools, and find that they are all saddled with buggy useless plug-ins (though the combination is always different). Switching to netbeans/intellij is not an option, and my teammates work with svn-controlled .class/.project files, so it pretty much has to be eclipse. Does anyone have any good advice on how I can save a few grey hairs?

How to show jQuery is working/waiting/loading ?

How do I show a loading picture and/or message to the user ? If possible, would I like to know how to make it full screen with grey-dimmed background. Kinda like when viewing the large picture from some galleries (sorry, no example link). Currently do I add a CSS class which has the image and other formating, but its not working for some reason. Results from the search do get inserted into the div. Making an owner-draw button transparent against its arbitrary background in WINCE

Hi I am trying to place an owner-draw button transparently onto a background. I have no trouble doing this when the background is a solid colour but if the background is an image I cannot seem to get the correct HDC (handle to device context) to Bitblt() the area that button covers. The HDC that is passed as part of the DRAWITEMSTRUCT gives me a button-default-grey area. If I attempt to get the parent of the HWND and then the device context of that i.e pdc = GetDC(GetParent(hWnd)); then the background that gets BitBlt'd is the background of the last painted window. LI Background Images (.PNG) not appeared in IE6

Hi I am using the following CSS but it never shows background images in IE6. But if I remove the filter .. AlphaLoader command, then it shows with grey background.
