  • What's the largest (most complex) PHP algorithm ever implemented in a single monolithic PHP script?

    I'm working on a tool which converts PHP code to Scala. As one of the finishing touches, I'm in need of a really good (er, somewhat biased) benchmark. By dumb luck my first benchmark attempt was with some code which uses bcmath extensively, which unfortunately is 1000x slower in Java, making the Scala code 22x slower overall than the original PHP. So I'm looking for some meaningful PHP benchmark with the following characteristics: The source needs to be in a single file. I need it to be simple to setup - no databases, hard-to-find input files, etc. Simple text input and output preferred. It should not use features that are slow in Java (BigInteger, trigonometric functions, etc). It should not use exoteric or dynamic PHP functions (e.g. no "eval" or "variable vars"). It should not over-rely on built-in libraries, e.g. MD5, crypt, etc. It should not be I/O bound. A CPU-bound memory-hungry algorithm is preferred. Basically, intensive OO operations, integer and string manipulation, recursion, etc would be great. Thanks

  • Using MinHash to find similiarities between 2 images

    I am using MinHash algorithm to find similar images between images. I have run across this post, How can I recognize slightly modified images? which pointed me to MinHash algorithm. Being a bit mathematically challenged, I was using a C# implementation from this blog post, Set Similarity and Min Hash. But while trying to use the implementation, I have run into 2 problems. What value should I set universe value to? When passing image byte array to HashSet, it only contains distinct byte values; thus comparing values from 1 ~ 256. What is this universe in MinHash? And what can I do to improve the C# MinHash implementation? Since HashSet<byte> contains values upto 256, similarity value always come out to 1.   • Flex - communicating between Itemrenderes in a single row.

    Hi, I have a datagrid with an XML object as dataprovider. There are 2 columns in the datagrid which have comboboxes as their itemrenderers. The rendereriseditor property is also marked true. These itemrenderers are defined in their own mxml files. What i want is if the user selects a particular item in the combobox, say NA, then the value of the other combobox should also become NA. I am looking for a way to group them by Color, but with a maximum of 2 items per group (sorting is not important). I can bind this gridview with any of databae table as depend on user selection. Now want to add new record in database so I have added text boxes on footer template cells at runtime depend on number of columns on table.   • Turn RSS into array, explode the 'description' and insert words into MySQL table one per row

    I have only recently gotten into php and MySQL and I want to take an RSS feed, turn it into an array, take only the description part of the XML, explode it and insert it into a table on a MySQL base. I feel like this should be possible, but is a little over my head right now. I tried using magpie as a parser, but if possible I want to do it in simpler php code. The result I am looking for would take a description "This is a cat" and insert it into a table with two fields ID term 1 This 2 is 3 a 4 cat I've been stumped on this for a couple days. Any help would be great.

  • Making one table equal to another without a delete *

    Hey, I know this is bit of a strange one but if anyone had any help that would be greatly appreciated. The scenario is that we have a production database at a remote site and a developer database in our local office. Developers make changes directly to the developer db and as part of the deployment process a C# application runs and produces a series of .sql scripts that we can execute on the remote side (essentially delete *, insert) but we are looking for something a bit more elaborate as the downtime from the delete * is unacceptable. This is all reference data that controls menu items, functionality etc of a major website. I have a sproc that essentially returns a diff of two tables. My thinking is that I can insert all the expected data in to a tmp table, execute the diff, and drop anything from the destination table that is not in the source and then upsert everything else. The question is that is there an easy way to do this without using a cursor? To illustrate the sproc returns a recordset structured like this: TableName Col1 Col2 Col3 Dest Src Anything in the recordset with TableName = Dest should be deleted (as it does not exist in src) and anything in Src should be upserted in to dest. I cannot think of a way to do this purely set based but my DB-fu is weak. Any help would be appreciated. Apologies if the explanation is sketchy; let me know if you need anymore details.

  • JQuery Autocomplete only suggesting first row

    I'm doing research using JQuery's Autocomplete plugin and Google Maps' API. What I have so far is located here. I'm using Asp.net MVC to generate the list of potential address matches (limited to US addresses only) and presenting them as a pipe-delimeted list to Autocomplete, which is supposed to be .spliting them up and suggesting them to the user. The problem I'm having (besides a stubborn IE-only javascript error, which I'll break into another question), is that only the first result is suggested. This page clearly shows two results, yet typing "3118" into the textbox produces only the Galax Dr result. How can I get Automplete to produce both results?

    I have a 1x8 matrix of students where each student is a 4x1 matrix of scores. Something like: SCORES S [62, 91, 74, 14] T [59, 7 , 59, 21] U [44, 9 , 69, 6 ] D [4 , 32, 28, 53] E [78, 99, 53, 83] N [48, 86, 89, 60] T [56, 71, 15, 80] S [47, 67, 79, 40] Main question: Using sigma notation, or some other mathematical function, how can I get a 1x8 matrix where each student's scores are summed? # expected result TOTAL OF SCORES S [241] T [146] U [128] D [117] E [313] N [283] T [222] S [233] Sub question. To get the average, I will multiply the matrix by 1/4. Would there be a quicker way to get the final result? AVERAGE SCORE S [60.25] T [36.50] U [32.00] D [29.25] E [78.25] N [70.75] T [55.50] S [58.25] Note: I'm not looking for programming-related algorithms here. I want to know if it is possible to represent this with pure mathematical functions alone.
