  • How do I remove a root kit from Windows XP?

    I was looking for root kits following these instructions http://computersight.com/software/how-to-manually-remove-rootkit/ and saw this in my boot log: Loaded driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\awhk9fmc.SYS I tried to search for that filename in Google but there was absolutely nothing found. I tried to look at the file on the disk but could not find it. Nearly every other file is there. I even tried to boot in Windows 98 and mount the NTFS and see the file, but it still wasn't there. I ran a full scan with Microsoft Security Essentials but it found nothing. When I rebooted, I saw this line instead: Loaded driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\a6n163gl.SYS How can I remove this? How can I find out what it does? How can I find out when it was put in? How can I find out who wrote it?   • Comparison of SSL Certificates

    My web application most definately needs an SSL certificate I was looking into godaddy's: http://www.godaddy.com/ssl/ssl-certificates.aspx The standard doesn't appear to have the lock in the URL bar, which a lot of users might not consider secure... How true is this? The Standard has https:// obviously in the bar, but is that enough to persuade users to want to enter in confidential information?? I'd appreciate any experience anyone has had with this. or any alterates they've dealt with. Is $100/year really the going rate for an SSL cert that has the lock in the url bar? Thanks SO!

  • Where can I get a one-off server of Active Directory for Developing against?

    We're not a windows shop, but one of our products is going to need to optionally integrate with Active Directory - things like SSO etc. I'd really rather not go through the rigamarole of setting up a whole server just to develop against it and then leave it hanging around for testing purposes. Is there a simple cloud-based service where I can purchase a server running active directory for a month or two just for development purposes? I looked into Amazon EC2 but it looks like you may still need to go through a significant set up (I may be wrong on this).

  • SkyDrive and Consumer Cloud Services

    Paul Thurrrott recently posted an article on the future of SkyDrive and I was asked what I thought about its future by @UserCommunity.  So let’s take a look. The breakdown from Microsoft that Paul described I believe is an accurate representation of users and usages. While I can’t say that I leverage SkyDrive to the extent that it was meant to be I do enjoy having OneNote hosted their and being able to consult and edit it from the desktop, web and Windows Phone. Taking that one step further is the Midwest Geeks group which started as the community of Microsoft related user groups in our region uses SkyDrive groups and shares calendars and documents.  This collaboration aspect isn’t new in itself, but having it connected with the rest of your cloud assets makes life easier. Another recent usage of this type of cloud service is storing your personal music files in order to get that same universal access.  This is a scenario that has some arguments for and against.  On the one hand own once and listen anywhere is great, but the on the other hand the bandwidth cost becomes a giant downside.  This is especially the case since most carriers are now doing away with unlimited data packages.     Oracle and Microsoft have entered into a new partnership that will help customers embrace cloud computing by providing greater choice and flexibility in how to deploy Oracle software.  Here are the key elements of the partnership: Effective today, our customers can run supported Oracle software on Windows Server Hyper-V and in Windows Azure Effective today, Oracle provides license mobility for customers who want to run Oracle software on Windows Azure Microsoft will add Infrastructure Services instances with popular configurations of Oracle software including Java, Oracle Database and Oracle WebLogic Server to the Windows Azure image gallery Microsoft will offer fully licensed and supported Java in Windows Azure Oracle will offer Oracle Linux, with a variety of Oracle software, as preconfigured instances on Windows Azure Oracle’s strategy and commitment is to support multiple platforms, and Microsoft Windows has long been an important supported platform.  Oracle is now extending that support to Windows Server Hyper-V and Window Azure by providing certification and support for Oracle applications, middleware, database, Java and Oracle Linux on Windows Server Hyper-V and Windows Azure.   • Opportunities in Cloud Computing

    A recent article from CIO Journal indicates that there is an extreme labor shortage (in certain technology areas) that is is leading to upward pressure on wages for IT Workers. This represents a great opportunity for those with certain skill-sets, among which include Java (Oracle certification is mentioned specifically). The article points out that a key driver of the labor shortage is the expansion of cloud computing. Cloud computing is set up to make life extremely simple for end-users, but the model pushes the complexity to back-end systems which are sophisticated, enterprise-level computing stacks (Oracle has an extensive set of cloud computing solutions). These complex systems require very highly-skilled IT professionals (the best-of-the-best) to successfully develop, implement, administer and maintain them. What this mean for you is that there is opportunity for those who have the appropriate skills at the appropriate levels. If you want to be a part of this opportunity you should do a self-assessment of your own skill-sets and experience. Based upon your results you can decide where it would be most appropriate to spend your time and resources for the highest return on your investment. By expanding and sharpening your skills and by gaining greater experience you will be better prepared to take advantage of career opportunities (like this) that come along periodically.   • 3d point cloud render from x,y,z 2d array with texture

    Need some direction on 3d point cloud display using OpenGL in c++ (vs2008). I am brand new to OpenGL and trying to do a 3d point cloud display with a texture. I have 3 2D arrays (each same size 1024x512) representing x,y,z of each point. I think I am on the right track with glBegin(GL_POLYGON); for(int i=0; i<1024; i++) { for(int j=0; j<512; j++) { glVertex3f(x[i][j], y[i][j], z[i][j]); } } glEnd(); Now this loads all the vertices in the buffer (I think) but from here I am not sure how to proceed. Or I am completely wrong here. Then I have another 2D array (same size) that contains color data (values from 0-255) that I want to use as texture on the 3D point cloud and display. I understand that this maybe a very basic OpenGL implementation for some but for me this is a huge learning curve. So any pointers, nudge or kick in the right direction will be appreciated.

    HOME SECURITY: HOW TO SECURE YOUR HOME WITHOUT SPENDING TOO MUCH Imagine if there were no burglar or criminals who threaten the safety of our homes; we will be surprised how much savings we would have on several things we do to secure ourselves and our loved ones. We would not need fences, gates with locks, doors locks, window grills, CCTV cams, perimeter lighting, shotguns and baseball bats. The cost of maintaining these things can run up to the entire cost of building another room or, in some cases, a whole new house. The rationale for home security is the same for national security. A nation maintains an army whether it has enemies or not; so, whether burglars will come or not, we have to prepare for the eventuality. Hence, we end up spending for something we might never put into the actual use it was intended for. You buy a pistol and when a burglar breaks in you fire the gun either to scare or disable the intruder. We hope we will never have to use these things; but we still buy them for the peace of mind that comes from knowing we can secure or protect our family and home.
