• What signing method to use for public open-source projects?

  I'm publishing an open-source library on CodePlex, and want the dll files to have strong names so that they can be added to GAC. What's the best option for signing? Should I use SNK? If so, everyone have access to the key. I don't have a problem with everyone having access, but is it a good approach? Should I use PFX? If so, does it mean that other people downloading the source code are not able to build the solution? What I like to do is that I am the only one person to have access to the key, so that the signed assemblies also have a level of authenticity, but meanwhile don't prevent other developers to download, build, or change the source code for themselves, and be able to post changes for the main project.

• Where can I find a large body of *Python3* source code?

  I'm testing a Python parser. I have Python 2.6/2.7 firmly under control, and some good (large) code samples on which I've tested it. I'm interested in testing my Python3 variant. I've been to various Python open source web sites (e.g., http://pythonsource.com/), which list lots of packages, but they are pretty unclear as whether these are Python 2.x vs 3.x source files. The several samples that I downloaded all turned out to be Python 2.x. Where can I find a number of large Python 3 software source codes? I don't really want 1000 little separate Python3 files; I prefer big applications.

• How do I find useful code previously deleted but still stored in source control?

  Whenever someone asks what to do with code that is no longer needed the answer is usually "delete it, restore it from source control if you need it back". Now how do I find that piece of source code in the repository? Let's limit scope to SVN for simplicity - I suspect that using any other source control system will not make much difference in this aspect (correct me if I'm wrong). If I delete that code and commit the changes it will no longer be in the latest revision. How do I find it without exporting each revision and searching thoroughly (which is nearly impossible)?

• Use .bat file to recursively loop through folders and get hold of .class files

  HI all, This is what i'm trying to do. I have a .bat file which takes in a argument which is nothing but a folder name. What i do first is go one level up (cd ..). Now in this directory i have 3 folders and each folders have sub-folders and have .class files in them. What i want to do is recursively loop through the folders and get hold of the .class files. Once this is done i want to echo the target folder of the .class file as well as echo the name of the.class file. So c:\temp\potter\myclass.class. I would echo out c:\temp\potter\ and myclass. I'm able to do this by writing a separate bat file which works. But when i integrate this with the recursive function it seems to break. • Why do open source projects cling on 0.x versions for too long?

  I see many open source projects insist on staying in 0.xxx version for a very long time despite that the product has been proven useful and very stable. Trac is one example. They even risked switching from 0.9 to 0.10 which might confuse a lot of users about which is more recent. I wonder if this is a cultural paradigm, an honor code in open source community or simply a strict interpretation of release cycle management? Would a person who releases first version as "1.0 beta" be banished from open source world, or more realistically appeal less number of contributors? For some projects it even looks like they will never switch to 1.0 ever but only approximating only half way each time, like Zeno's paradox.

• Java/Groovy File IO Replacing an Image File with it's own Contents - Why Does This Work?

  I have some JPG files that need to be replaced at runtime with a JFIF standardized version of themselves (we are using a vendor that gives us JPG that do not have proper headers so they don't work in certain applications)... I am able to create a new file from the existing image, then get a buffered image from that file and write the contents right back into the file without having to delete it and it works... imageSrcFolder.eachFileMatch ( ~/.*\.jpg/, { BufferedImage bi = ImageIO.read( it ) ImageIO.write( bi, "jpg", it ) }); The question I have is why? Why doesn't the file end up doubled in size? Why don't I have to delete it first? Why am I able to take a file object to an existing file and then treat it as if it were a brand new one? It seems that what I consider to be a "file" is not what the File object in java actually is, or else this wouldn't work at all. My code does exactly what I want it to do, but I'm not convinced it always will... it just seems way too easy

  I'm trying to do this exercise for my exam tomorrow. I need to compare a string of my own input and see if that string is appearing on the file. This needs to be done directly on the file, so I cannot extract the string to my program and compare them "indirectly". I found this way but I'm not getting it right, and I don't know why. The algorithm sounds good to me. Any help, please? I really need to focus on this one.   Hello I am working on a proposal where we have to implement a software which can move files between one source to destination.The overall goal of this project is to create intelligent file transfer.This software will have three components :- 1) Broker : Broker is the module that communicates with other brokers, monitors files, moves files, retrieves configurations from the Configuration Manager, supplies process information for the monitor, archives files, writes all process data to log files and escalates issues if necessary 2) Configuration Manager :Configuration Manager is a web-based application used to configure and deploy the configuration to all brokers. 3) Monitor : Monitor is a web-based application used to monitor each Broker in the environment. This project has to be built up in java and protocol for file transfer in tcp/ip. Client does not want to use FTP. File Transfer seems very easy, until there are several processes who are waiting to pick the file up automatically. Several problems arise: How can we guarantee the file is received at the destination? If a file isn’t received the first time, we should try it again (even after a restart or power breakdown) ? How does the receiver knows the file that is received is complete? How can we transfer multiple files synchronously? How can we protect the bandwidth, so file transfer isn’t blocking other processes? How does one interoperate between multiple OS platforms? What about authentication? How can we monitor het workflow? Auditing / logging Archiving Can you please provide answer to some of these? • Browser download file prompt using javascript

  hi, I was wondering if there was any method to implement browser's download file prompt using javascript. My reason - well users will be uploading files to a local fileserver which cannot be accessed from the webserver. In other words, both will be on different domains! e.g. let’s say websites hosted on www.xyz.com, but files would reside on local file server with address like \10.10.10.01\Files\file.txt. How am I uploading/transferring file to local fileserver... using ACTIVEX(yikes) & VBscript!!!! (don’t ask :-) so i am storing local file path in my database and binding that data to a grid. So when the user clicks on that link, the file opens in a window (using javascript). Problem is certain file types like text, jpg, pdf, etc open inside browser window. How would i be able to implement content-type or content-disposition using client side scripting? Is that even possible? hoping my description was clear. Any ideas? EDIT: the local file server has a window's shared folder on which the files are saved.

I'd give the app away, make it open-source, but I would like to sell various maps to individual users. Is there a way to protect the data in such a way that makes it very difficult for someone to simply take the map they bought and distribute it to others? Is this feasible for an open source app?

• Howto get iframe linking to internal document source using javascript/jQuery?

  Hi there, I have an iframe with id "appframe", the source is page.html and it's on the same server. I want to get the source of the page using jQuery. alert($("#appframe").contents().find("html").html()); returns <head></head><body></body> even though the document does not contain those tags, it only contains "Default page", so that is exactly what it should return. Any idea how to get the right source script of the whole document using jQuery? Eg. if the document would be "test" then that is exactly what it should return. Please note: I did ask this before a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, I got no solving answer. Because of my lower reputation (~85), I can not request a bounty... This doesn't make much sense to me. Anyway, it forced me to repost this question.

  Hi, I have an XML file. My application requires manipulation into that XML file. I will be writing the values into the XML value. I also have interface to display the read contents of the file. The user might add values into that XML (through an interface). Without closing the application he may decide to display the File contents also. Now the problem is, after i write the XML contents into the file, when i view the file through the interface , the values are not getting updated. After i close the application and open it the updated values are available.I am using the following code to achieve this. For writing QXmlStreamWriter and for reading QDomDocument, QDomNodeList. After i complete the writing, I flush and close the file too. lFile.flush(); lFile.close(); After reading also i closed the file. Can someone tell me what am doing wrong??

  In my project, I am trying to open a text file. Well the below code works but when the user click the button again and again, many files are being opened. (which I dont want) System.Diagnostics.Process.Start(filePath); I also tried Link , File.Open and File.OpenText which are not opening the text file and also not showing any error (tried with try catch block) File.Open(filePath); (or) File.OpenText(filePath); (or) FileStream fileStream = new FileStream(filePath, FileMode.Open); I also tried this: (ERROR : Cannot be accessed with instance reference qualify with a type name instead) System.Diagnostics.Process proc = new System.Diagnostics.Process(); proc.Start(filePath); /*red scribbles here*/ proc.WaitForExit(); How to show only one instance of the Text file(.txt). am I doing something wrong in my attempts? please suggest. EDIT: I want to open other text files afterwards but not the same and also the application should be accessible after opening a text file(or many). I have only one form.

• Generic file container for quick read of data

  Since there are some major privacy issues with alot of social networking sites I am trying to think about alternatives. One is to let the user keep all the information stored in some kind of file container. Now, I haven't found a single type of container that can hold "generic" information. Only for audio/video. What I want is a container that can be read by PHP with some kind of index file that lists up the users pictures in a image/ directory in the container, FOAF files (or some alternative XML-file describing users information and friends, etc.). My thoughts was to let the user keep all their information and data stored in a container that can be imported/exported and deleted from my server (the prototype social networking site I am trying to create), and then uploaded to another site that might use the same format (not that I think that will ever happen, but the user still keeps all their pictures, data, comments, messages, etc). The only thing I have come up with yet is to create a tar archive with the Archive_tar library which extracts and creates Tar-archives with an index-file describing which files are holding the messages (there might be several so each file won't be so large), what pictures are in the image/ folder and what are their names and what comments they have gotten etc. Maybe also the permissions for viewing each type of content. Does there exist any generic file format of a container that I can use to keep all this information in one file with a tree-like index file? Or must i try and create something like this myself?

  Having a strange problem with NFS share and file permissions on the 1 out of the 2 NFS clients, web1 has file permissions issues but web2 is fine. web1 and web2 are load balanced web servers. So questions are: how do I ensure NFS share file contents retain the same permissions for user/group as the original files on web1 server like they do on web2 server ? how do I reverse what I did on web1, i tried unmount command and said command not found ? Information: I'm using 3 dedicated server setup. All 3 servers CentOS 5.4 64bit based. servers are as follows: web1 - nfs client with file permissions issues web2 - nfs client file permissions are OKAY db1 - nfs share at /nfsroot web2 nfs client was setup by my web host, while web1 was setup by me. I did the following commands on web1 and it worked with updating db1 nfsroot share at /nfsroot/site_css with latest files on web1 but the file permissions don't stick even if i use tar with -p command to perserve file permissions ? cd /home/username/public_html/forums/script/ tar -zcp site_css/ > site_css.tar.gz mount -t nfs4 nfsshareipaddress:/site_css /home/username/public_html/forums/scripts/site_css/ -o rw,soft cd /home/username/public_html/forums/script/ tar -zxf site_css.tar.gz But checking on web1 file permissions no longer username user/group but owned by nobody ? but web2 file permissions correct ? This is only a problem for web1 while web2 is correct ? Looks like numeric ids aren't the same ? • Answers to “What source control system do you use?” (and some winners)

  About a month ago I posed a question here on my blog SQL Server devs–what source control system do you use, if any? (answer and maybe win free stuff) in which I asked SQL Server developers to answer the following questions: Are you putting your SQL Server code into a source control system? If so, what source control server software (e.g. TFS, Git, SVN, Mercurial, SourceSafe, Perforce) are you using? What source control client software are you using (e.g. TFS Team Explorer, Tortoise, Red Gate SQL Source Control, Red Gate SQL Connect, Git Bash, etc…)? Why did you make those particular software choices? Any interesting anecdotes to share in regard to your use of source control and SQL Server? I had some really great responses (I highly recommend going and reading them). I promised that the five best, most thought-provoking, responses (as determined by me) would win one of five pairs of licenses for Red Gate SQL Source Control and Red Gate SQL Connect; here are the five that I chose (note that if you responded but did not leave a means of getting in touch then you weren’t considered for one of the prizes – sorry): In general, I don't think the management overhead and licensing cost associated with TFS is worthwhile if all you're doing is using source control. To get value from TFS, at a minimum you need to be using team build, and possibly other stuff as well, such as the sharepoint integration. If that's all you need, then svn with Tortoise would be my first choice. If you want to add build automation later, you can do this with cruisecontrol (is it still called that?), JetBrains, etc. For a long time I thought that Redgate's claims about "bridging the SSMS-VS divide" were a load of hot air, since in my experience anyone who knew what they were doing was using Visual Studio, in particular SSDT and its predecessors. However, on a recent client I was putting in source control for the first time, and I discovered that the "divide" really does exist. That client has ended up using svn with Redgate SQL Source Control, with no build automation, but with scope to add it in the future. Gavin Campbell I think putting the DB under source control is a great idea.  I have issues with the earlier versions of SQL Source Control in that it provides little help in versioning the DB. I think the latest version merges SQL Compare and SQL Source Control together.  Which is how it should have been all along. Sure I have the DB scripts in SVN, but I can't automate DB builds and changes without more tools.  Frankly I'm surprised databases don't have some sort of versioning built into them. Nick Portelli Source control has been immensely useful and saved me from a lot of rework on more than one occasion.  I have learned that you have to be extremely careful checking in data.  Our system is internal only so during the system production run once a week, if there is a problem that I can fix easily(for example, a control table points to a file in the wrong environment), I'll do it directly in production so the run can continue as soon as possible since we have a specified time window.  We do full test runs to minimize this but it has come up once or twice.  We use Red-Gate source control to "push" from the test environment to the production environment.  There have been a couple of occasions where the test environment with the wrong setting was pushed back over the production environment because the change was made only in production.  Gotta keep an eye on that. Alan Dykes Goodness is it manual.  And can be extremely painful at times.  Not only are we running thin, we are constrained on the tools we can get ($$ must mean free).  Certainly no excuse, and a great opportunity to improve my skills by learning new things.  But...  Getting buy in a on a proven process or methodology is hard, takes time, and diverts us from development.  If SQL Source Control is easy to use and proven oh boy could you get some serious fans around here!  Seriously though, as the "accidental dba" of this shop any new ideas / easy to implement tools can make a world of difference in productivity and most importantly accuracy.  Manual = bad. :) John Hennesey (who left his email address) The one thing I would love to know more about is the unique challenges of working with databases as source code - you can store scripts, but are they written as deployment scripts with all the logic about how to apply them to an existing DB? • Problems with wireless file copy - hangs during copy

  I have this problem on my home network where when I try to copy files via wireless connection, at some point the copy fails and the machine doing the copy loses connection to the network. I'm pretty much lost as to figuring out the source for the problem... Some more details that might help: It's not OS related. I have Windows 7 machines and Leopard machines and this occurs on both I'm using a 3com OfficeConnect router Wired transfer works fine Other programs that require heavy wireless traffic work just fine:streaming large HD movies, Xbox Live! ... I'm lost as to how to even begin trying to diagnose the problem so any tips are welcome...

• Additional options in MDL

      The Metadata Loader(MDL) enables you to populate a new repository as well as transfer, update, or restore a backup of existing repository metadata. It consists of two utilities: metadata export and metadata import. The export utility extracts metadata objects from a repository and writes the information into a file. The import utility reads the metadata information from an exported file and inserts the metadata objects into a repository.      While the Design Client provides an intuitive UI that helps you perform the most commonly used export and import tasks, OMBPlus scripting enables you to specify some additional options, and manage a control file that allows you to perform more specialized export and import tasks. Is it possible to utilize these options in MDL from Design Client? This article will tell you how to achieve it.      A property file named mdl.properties is used to configure the additional options. It stores options in name/value pairs. This file can be created and placed under the directory <owb installation path>/owb/bin/admin/. Below we will introduce the options that can be specified in the mdl.properties file. 1. DEFAULTDIRECTORY     When we open a Metadata Export/Import dialog in Design Client, a default directory is provided for MDL file and log file. For MDL Export, the default directory is <owb installation path>/owb/bin/. As for MDL Import, the default directory is <owb installation path>/owb/mdl/. It may not be the one you would want to use as a default. You can specify the option DEFAULTDIRECTORY in the mdl.properties file to set your own default directory for MDL Export/Import, for example, DEFAULTDIRECOTRY=/tmp/     In this example, the default directory is set to /tmp/. Be sure the value ends with a file separator since it represents a directory. In Windows, the file separator is “\”. In linux, the file separator is “/”. 2. MDLTRACEFILE     Sometimes we would like to trace the whole process of MDL Export/Import, and get detailed information about operations to help developers or supports troubleshooting. To turn on MDL trace, set the option MDLTRACEFILE in the mdl.properties file. MDLTRACEFILE=/tmp/mdl.trc    The right side of the equals sign is to specify the name of the file for MDL trace information to be written. If no path is specified, the file will be placed under directory <owb installation path>/owb/bin/admin/. However, the trace file may be large if the MDL file contains a large number of metadata objects, so please use this option sparingly. 3. CONTROLFILE       We can use a control file to specify how objects are imported or exported. We can set an option called CONTROLFILE in the mdl.properties file, so the control file can also be utilized in Design Client, for example, CONTROLFILE=/tmp/mdl_control_file.ctl     The control file stores options in name/value pairs. When using control file, be sure the file exists, otherwise an exception java.lang.Exception: CNV0002-0031(ERROR): Cannot find specified file will be thrown out during MDL Export/Import.      Next we will introduce some options specified in control file. ZIPFILEFORMAT     By default, MDL exports objects into a zip format file. This zip file has an .mdl extension and contains two files. For example, you export the repository metadata into a file called projects.mdl. When you unzip this MDL file, you obtain two files. The file projects.mdx contains the repository objects. The file mdlcatalog.xml contains internal information about the MDL XML file. Another choice is to combine these two files into one unzip text format file when doing MDL exporting.    In OMBPlus command related to MDL, there is an option called FILE_FORMAT which is used to specify the file format for the exported file. Its acceptable values are ZIP or TEXT. When the value TEXT is selected, the exported file is in text format, for example, OMBEXPORT MDL_FILE '/tmp/options_file_format_test.mdl' FILE_FORMAT TEXT FROM PROJECT 'MY_PROJECT'    How to achieve this via Design Client when doing an MDL exporting? Here we have another option called ZIPFILEFORMAT which has the same function as the FILE_FORMAT. The difference is the acceptable values for ZIPFILEFORMAT are Y or N. When the value is set to N, the exported file is in text format, otherwise it is in zip file format. LOGMESSAGELEVEL     Whenever you export or import repository metadata, MDL writes diagnostic and statistical information to a log file. Their are 3 types of status messages: Informational, Warning and Error. By default, the log file includes all types of message. Sometimes, user may only care about one type of messages, for example, they would like only error messages written to the log file. In order to achieve this, we can set an option called LOGMESSAGELEVEL in control file. The acceptable values for LOGMESSAGELEVEL are ALL, WARNING and ERROR. ALL: If the option LOGMESSAGELEVEL is set to ALL, all types of messages (Informational, Warning and Error) will be written into the log file. WARNING: If the option LOGMESSAGELEVEL is set to WARNING, only warning messages will be written into log file. ERROR: If the option LOGMESSAGELEVEL is set to ERROR, only error messages will be written into log file. UPDATEPROJECTATTRIBUTES, UPDATEMODULEATTRIBUTES      These two options are used to decide whether updating the attributes of projects/modules. The options work when projects/modules being imported already exist in repository and we use update metadata mode or replace metadata mode to do the MDL import. The acceptable values for these two options are Y or N. If the value is set to Y, the attributes of projects/modules will be updated, otherwise not.      Next, let’s give an example to see how these options take effect in MDL. 1. First of all, create the property file mdl.properties under the directory <owb installation path>/owb/bin/admin/. 2. Specify the options in the mdl.properties file, see the following screenshot. 3. Create the control file mdl_control_file.ctl under the directory /tmp/. Set the following options in control file. 4. Log into the OWB Design Client. 5. Create an Oracle module named ORA_MOD_1 under the project MY_PROJECT, then export the project MY_PROJECT into file my_project.mdl. 6. Check the trace file mdl.trc under the directory /tmp/. In this file, we can see very detail information for the above export task. 7. Check the exported MDL file. The file my_project.mdl is in text format. Opening the file, you can see the content of the file directly. It concats the file my_project.mdx and mdlcatalog.xml. 8. Modify the project MY_PROJECT and Oracle module ORA_MOD_1, add descriptions for them separately. Delete the location created in step 5. 9. Import the MDL file my_project.mdl. From the Metadata Import dialog, we can see the default directory for MDL file and log file has been changed to /tmp/. Here we use update metadata mode, match by names to do the importing. 10. After importing, check the description of the project MY_PROJECT, we can see the description is still there. But the description of the Oracle module ORA_MOD_1 has gone. That because we set the option UPDATEPROJECTATTRIBUTES to N, and set the option UPDATEMODULEATTRIBUTES to Y. 11.
