• SQL to insert latest version of a group of items

  I’m trying to determine a good way to handle the scenario below. I have the following two database tables, along with sample data. Table1 contains distributions that are grouped per project. A project can have one or more distributions. A distribution can have one of more accounts. An account has a percentage allocated to it. The distributions can be modified by adding or removing account, as well as changing percentages. Table2 tracks distributions, assigning a version number to each distribution. I need to be able to copy new distributions from Table1 to Table2, but only under two conditions: 1. the entire distribution does not already exist 2. the distribution has been modified (accounts added/removed or percentages changed). Note: When copying a distribution from Table1 to Table2 I need to compare all accounts and percentages within the distribution to determine if it already exists. When inserting the new distribution then I need to increment the VersionID (max(VersionID) + 1). So, in the example provided the distribution (12345, 1) has been modified, adding account number 7, as well as changing percentages allocated. The entire distribution should be copied to the second table, incrementing the VersionID to 3 in the process. The database in question is SQL Server 2005.   I have the below tables. tblInput Id WordPosition Words -- ----------- ----- 1 1 Hi 1 2 How 1 3 are 1 4 you 2 1 Ok 2 2 This 2 3 is 2 4 me tblReplacement Id ReplacementWords --- ---------------- 1 Hi 2 are 3 Ok 4 This The tblInput holds the list of words while the tblReplacement hold the words that we need to search in the tblInput and if a match is found then we need to replace those. But the problem is that, we need to replace those words if any match is found at the beginning. i.e. in the tblInput, in case of ID 1, the words that will be replaced is only 'Hi' and not 'are' since before 'are', 'How' is there and it is not in the tblReplacement list. in case of Id 2, the words that will be replaced are 'Ok' & 'This'. Since these both words are present in the tblReplacement table and after the first word i.e. 'Ok' is replaced, the second word which is 'This' here comes first in the list of ID category 2 . Since it is available in the tblReplacement, and is the first word now, so this will also be replaced.   Let's say I have three tables, [ONE], [ONE_TWO], and [TWO]. [ONE_TWO] is a many-to-many join table with only [ONE_ID and [TWO_ID] columns. There are foreign keys set up to link [ONE] to [ONE_TWO] and [TWO] to [ONE_TWO]. The FKs use the ON DELETE CASCADE option so that if either a [ONE] or [TWO] record is deleted, the associated [ONE_TWO] records will be automatically deleted as well. I want to have a trigger on the [TWO] table such that when a [TWO] record is deleted, it executes a stored procedure that takes a [ONE_ID] as a parameter, passing the [ONE_ID] values that were linked to the [TWO_ID] before the delete occurred: DECLARE @Statement NVARCHAR(max) SET @Statement = '' SELECT @Statement = @Statement + N'EXEC [MyProc] ''' + CAST([one_two].[one_id] AS VARCHAR(36)) + '''; ' FROM deleted JOIN [one_two] ON deleted.[two_id] = [one_two].[two_id] EXEC (@Statement) Clearly, I need a BEFORE DELETE trigger, but there is no such thing in SQL Server 2005. I can't use an INSTEAD OF trigger because of the cascading FK. I get the impression that if I use a FOR DELETE trigger, when I join [deleted] to [ONE_TWO] to find the list of [ONE_ID] values, the FK cascade will have already deleted the associated [ONE_TWO] records so I will never find any [ONE_ID] values. Is this true? If so, how can I achieve my objective? I'm thinking that I'd need to change the FK joining [TWO] to [ONE_TWO] to not use cascades and to do the delete from [ONE_TWO] manually in the trigger just before I manually delete the [TWO] records. But I'd rather not go through all that if there is a simpler way.

  I tried to create a full-text index and got this error: Msg 9967, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 A default full-text catalog does not exist in database 'foo' or user does not have permission to perform this action. FYI--I connected to the target sql server with Windows Authentication. What do I need to do in Sql Server 2005 and/or in Windows Server 2003 to get permissions? Please be thorough (assume I am a n00b). Thank you.

  Hi there guys. I have this ASP.NET/SQLServer2005 website running on a production server (Win2003, QuadCore, 4GB). The site runs smoothly normally, but after 2-3 weeks I notice a slow performance on the site (especifically in one particular page). Also I notice that the SQL Server process is using like 2GBs of RAM. So I restart the service, the site runs fast again and the process 300-400MBs. I'm looking for an explanation of why is this happening? What is SQL Server storing in RAM that takes too much space and degrades the performance? What can I do to avoid this? I'm trying to avoid restarting the SQLServer everytime this happens. Thank you!

  I am trying to run several DTS packages from a sql 2000 box. The DTS calls will originate from .net 2.0 - 3.5 code. I have been unable to find a good way to programmatically accomplish this. What I have read is running a sql job from a stored procedure that calls the DTS package. Does anyone has any experience with this or know of a good way to call the DTS? Note: For the forseeable future these packages will remain DTS. Eventually we will convert them to SSIS. Any insight or experience would be very helpful.

Therefore TableA has a one-to-many relationship with TableB. It will report the last full, differential and log backup date and time for each database. Along with these information you’ll also get some additional metadata that shows if a database is a read-only database and its recovery model: By default it will check only the last seven days, but you can change this value just specifying how many days back you want to check. To analyze the last seven days, and list only the database with FULL recovery model without a log backup select * from sys2.databases_backup_info(default) where recovery_model = 3 and log_backup = 0 To analyze the last fifteen days, and list only the database with FULL recovery model with a differential backup select * from sys2.databases_backup_info(15) where recovery_model = 3 and diff_backup = 1 I just love this script, I use it every time I need to check that backups are not too old and that t-log backup are correctly scheduled. query_memory_grants This is just a wrapper around sys.dm_exec_query_memory_grants that enriches the default result set with the text of the query for which memory has been granted or is waiting for a memory grant and, optionally, its execution plan stp_get_databases_space_used_info This is a stored procedure that list all the available databases and for each one the overall size, the used space within that size, the maximum size it may reach and the auto grow options.   We are using Tivoli Storage Manager for taking backups of the database but sometimes our consultants need to take separate backup copies of the database using Management Studio. If they forget to mark the "copy-only" flag in Management Studio they will mess up the Tivoli's backups (we are running our databases in FULL-recovery mode). Is there a way to set the default value of the Copy-Only flag to true in the Management Studio's "Back Up Database"-window?

• Orphaned SQL Recordsets/Connections with IIS

  I have an IIS 6 site running on Windows 2003 Server x86 with MS SQL2005 Enterprise edition running ASP Classic (no choice). The site runs very fast with about 8000 page views per hour. All of my SQL tables are indexed and I have used the profiler to check my queries, the slowest of which is only about 10-15ms. I have autoshrink disabled, autogrow is set to 250mb, database is 2gb with 800mb of free space. My problem is that every now and then the site will slow to a crawl for no reason. Pages that just have a simple 'connect to databse and increment a hit counter' work ok, but more SQL intensive pages that normally execute in about 60ms take 25,000ms to run. This happens for about 30 seconds and then goes away. I was having an issue with orphan recordsets and connections due to the way I was releasing them. I have fixed this up and the issue is much better, but I am still getting them. Is there a way with permon, etc. to track when SQL Server or Windows closes these Orphan connections? At least if I can monitor the issue I will know if I am making progress or if I am even looking at the right things. Is there anything else I might be missing? Thank you!

• Visual Studio 2005 - Debugger stopped working.

  More fun and pain with Visual Studio. Visual Studio 2005. About two months ago, I started an assignment. In my role, I cannot install or configure development software. Trust me this has given me plenty of heartburn. No IIS is involved here, just File Sharing. That being said, when I first started I had a problem with my debugger not working. The debugger just stopped. I was able to get it working. Now the problem has returned and I am pulling every last hair on my head. Almost none of my symbols loads. It can't find the PDB files. In Debugger options, I checked the Symbol section. My symbol file location entry is completely blank. ? I don't know why. I did not touch this prior to the problem occurring. I have cleared the Temporary ASP.NET folders. I should note, I created a new project. Recreated my files manually by importing them. The debugger worked 5 times and died. I'm at a loss of what to do next? The obvious has been checked: The project is set to Debug Configuration Manager Configuration Debug Platform .NET Build : checked. Web.Config: I have attempted to manually attach to the Webdev process from the Debug window and that doesn't work. I have googled this and this problem seems to occur quite a bit.

  Hello I have a server with live databases, and I have a test-server where I sometimes restore databases from the live one, to get fresh data. But this way I have to set up all the users again, I have about 4 different users with different permissions that need set again. Is there some way to do this a better way without using detach and attach, since I cant take the databases offline on the live-server? Prefered some thing I could run that "re-fills" the tables with fresh data. No need to redo stored procedures and rights. /M

• Windows Server 2003 Terminal Server with installed licenses will not go beyond 2 connections

  I installed the Terminal Server role in Windows Server 2003 Standard 64-bits. Still, only 2 connections are allowed. The License Manager says that there are 10 Device CALs available, which is correct, and that none are given out. For good measure I let the server reboot, to no effect. Before this, there was another server (same Windows, except that it is 32 bits) active as a licensing server. I removed the role first and then then added it to the new server. I then removed the Terminal Server Licensing Server component off the old one and added it to the new one. After that, I added to licenses. When that didn't give the required result, I rebooted to new server. Still, the new server, with licenses and all, acts as if it has the 2 license RDP. The server are all stand-alone, there is no active directory been set up. Both servers are in different workgroups.

• Msg 10054, Level 20, State 0, Line 0 Error when altering a stored procedure to add a couple of curso

  We have a home-rolled backup stored procedure that uses xp_cmdshell to create and clean up database backups. We have an instance that is 2005 sp3 that we are trying to deploy this script to. I am at a bit of a loss for why it is not working. When I execute the create it runs for about 30 seconds and yields the following error: Msg 10054, Level 20, State 0, Line 0 A transport-level error has occurred when sending the request to the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.) In my tinkering I discovered that by removing the cursors that actually do the work it will allow me to create the stored procedure (not very helpful for me though). If I add the cursors back in using an alter the error returns. I would be curious if someone has experienced this problem and knows of a solution or work around. I am not opposed to posting the source, it is just lengthy. Things I have checked: Error Logs No dump files in the log directory Thanks in advance for the help.

  Hi! I've got a problem with multiple deadlocks on SQL server 2005. This one is between an INSERT and a SELECT statement. There are two tables. Table 1 and Table2. Table2 has Table1's PK (table1_id) as foreign key. Index on table1_id is clustered. The INSERT inserts a single row into table2 at a time. The SELCET joins the 2 tables. (it's a long query which might take up to 12 secs to run) According to my understanding (and experiments) the INSERT should acquire an IS lock on table1 to check referential integrity (which should not cause a deadlock). • SQL Express Edition, SQL Compact Editin and SQLCMD for learning purpose

  Hi, I want to learn programming in SQL from some SQL tutorial sites of which I heard of here but I need some environment for executing query's. I think I have both SQL CE and SQL EE installed on my computer but I have some doubts about these DBMS and I don't know exactly how to use SQLCMD utility so I hope someone here will have time and will to explain me the following: Since running sqlcmd -S.\sqlexpress at command prompt command gives "1" prompt I assume I have SQL express installed but anyway how can I be sure what I have installed on my machine since I cannot find in installed programs SQL Express Edition name? Can I ship and use database with my C# (VC# Express) application which was created with SQL EE (embedded?)? How can use sqlcmd for learning SQL, that is by issuing commands like create, use, select..., again emphasize is on learning SQL I do not want to run scripts but use interactive command prompt like with MySQL (since I want to use SQL I would pretty much like to avoid graphical tools for DBMS)? Please tell me if you have some other advice regarding as to what should I better use in learning how to program in SQL or should I stick with the above for now. Thanks in advance.

• SQL Server 2008 Cluster Installation - First network name always fails

  I'm testing failover clustering in Windows Server 2008 to host a SQL Server 2008 installation using this installation guide. My base cluster is installed and working properly, as well as clustering the DTC service. However, when it comes time to install SQL Server, my first attempt at installation always fails with the same message and seems to "taint" the network name. For example, with my previous cluster attempt, I was installing SQL Server as VSQL. After approximately 15 attempts of installation and trying to resolve the errors, e.g. changing domain accounts for SQL, setting SPNs, etc., I typoed the network name as VQSL and the installation worked. Similarly on my current cluster, I tried installing with the SQL service named PROD-C1-DB and got the same errors as last time until I tried changing the name to anything else, e.g. PROD-C1-DB1, SQL, TEST, etc., at which point the install works. It will even install to VSQL now. While testing, my install routine was: Run setup.exe from patched media, selecting appropriate options After the install fails, I'd chose "Remove node from a SQL Server failover cluster" and remove the single, failed, node Attempt to diagnose problem, inspect event logs, etc. Delete the computer account that was created for the SQL Service from Active Directory Delete the MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER folder from the shared data drive The error message I receive from the SQL Server installer is: The following error has occurred: The cluster resource 'SQL Server' could not be brought online. Error: The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested operation. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007139F) Along with hundreds of the following errors in the Application event log: [sqsrvres] checkODBCConnectError: sqlstate = 28000; native error = 4818; message = [Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 10.0][SQL Server]Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'.
