• SQL Server: export data via SQL query?

  I have FK and PK all over my db and table data needs to be specified in a certain order or else I get FK/PK insertion errors. I'm tired of executing the wizard again and again to transfer data one table at a time. In the SQL Server export data wizard there is an option to "Write a query to specify the data to transfer". I'd like to write the query myself and specify the correct order. Will this solve my problem? How do I do this? Can you provide a sample query (or link to one) The databases are on two different servers - SQL Server 2008 on each ; The database names & permissions are the same ; each table name & col is the same ; I need Identity Insert for each table.

• LINQ-to-SQL and SQL Compact - database file sharing problem

  Hello. I'm learing LINQ-to-SQL right now and i have wrote a simple application that define SQL data: [Table( Name = "items" )] public class Item { [ Column( IsPrimaryKey = true, IsDbGenerated = true ) ] public int Id; [ Column ] public string Name; } I have launched 2 copy of application connected to the same .sdf file and tested if all database modifications in one application affects another application. But strange thing arise. If i use InsertOnSubmit() and DeleteOnSubmit() in one application, added/removed items are instantly visible in other application via 'select' LINQ queue. But if i try to modify 'Name' field in one application, it is NOT visible in other applicaton until it reconnects the database :(. • Migrating from Physical SQL (SQL2000) To VMWare machine (SQL2008) - Transferring Large DB

  We're in the middle of migrating from a windows & SQL 2000 box to a Virtualised Win & SQL 2k8 box The VMWare box is on a different site, with better hardware, connectivity etc... The old(current) physical machine is still in constant use - I've taken a backup of the DB on this machine, which is 21GB Transfering this to our virtual machine took around 7+ hours - which isn't ideal when we do the "actual" switchover. My question is - How should I handle the migration better? Could i set up our current machine to do log shipping to the VM machine to keep up to date? then, schedule down time out of hours to do the switch over? Is there a better way?

  I'm building an ASP.NET MVC site that uses LINQ to SQL to connect to SQL Server, where I have a table that has an IDENTITY bigint primary key column that represents an ID. In one of my code methods, I need to create an object of that table to get its ID, which I will place into another object based on another table (FK-to-PK relationship). At what point is the IDENTITY column value generated and how can I obtain it from my code? Is the right approach to: Create the object that has the IDENTITY column Do an InsertOnSubmit() and SubmitChanges() to submit the object to the database table Get the value of the ID property of the object

  hi, so i have a table lets say call it "tbl.items" and there is a column "title" in "tbl.items" i want to loop through each row and for each "title" in "tbl.items" i want to do following: the column has the datatype nvarchar(max) and contains a string... filter the string to remove words like in,out, where etc (stopwords) compare the rest of the string to a predefined list and if there is a match perform some action which involves inserting data in other tables as well.. the problem is im ignotent when it comes to writing T-sql scripts, plz help and guide me how can i achieve this? whether it can be achieved by writing a sql script?? or i have to develope a console application in c# or anyother language?? im using mssql server 2008 thanks in advance

• Month to Date in SQL Server 2008

  Hopefully this will be an easy one to answer. I am working on a table that requires MTD data. One of our SQL guys told me to use MONTH (@monthtodate)= 11 Where @monthtodate is set to GetDate() in the parameter list in SQL Server Management Studio. So in "theory", he says, it should select the month (11) and then get today and return all the requested data in between those two dates. But I'm thinking this isn't correct. In looking at my data I'm starting to think that It's just returning data for the whole month of November instead of just MTD. I guess, technically, anything that has 0 won't be calculated. However that just means it's poorly written code correct? In your opinions, would this be the better way to return MTD data: production_date <= @today and Production_Date >= DATEADD(mm, DATEDIFF(mm, 0, @today), 0) Thanks in advance everyone!

• Store time of the day in SQL

  How would you store a time or time range in SQL? It won't be a datetime because it will just be let's say 4:30PM (not, January 3rd, 4:30pm). Those would be weekly, or daily meetings. The type of queries that I need are of course be for display, but also later will include complex queries such as avoiding conflicts in schedule. I'd rather pick the best datatype for that now. I'm using MS SQL Server Express 2005. Thanks! Nathan

  I have a table of names and addresses, which includes a postcode column. I want to strip the spaces from the postcodes and select any that match a particular pattern. I'm trying this (simplified a bit) in T-SQL on SQL Server 2005: SELECT Replace(Postcode, ' ', '') AS P FROM Contacts WHERE P LIKE 'NW101%' But I get the following error; Msg 207, Level 16, State 1, Line 3 Invalid column name 'P'. If I remove the WHERE clause I get a list of postcodes without spaces, which is what I want to search. How should I approach this? What am I doing wrong?

• Very Different Execution Times of SQL Query in C# and SQL Server Management Studio

  I have a simple SQL query that when run from C# takes over 30 seconds then times-out every time, whereas when run on SQL Server Management Studio successfully completes instantly. In the latter case, a query execution plan reveals nothing troubling, and the execution time is spread nicely through a few simple operations. I've run 'EXEC sp_who2' while the query is running from C#, and it is listed as taking 29,000 milliseconds of CPU time, and is not blocked by anything. I have no idea how to begin solving this. Does anyone have some insight? The query is: SELECT c.lngId, ...   I would like to generate a Data Dictionary for a SQL Server 2008 database that has one row for each field, and the following columns: table_name field_name data_type link_table (for when the field in question is a foreign key) link_field (for when the field in question is a foreign key) I can get the first 3 columns with something like the SQL script below...but I don't know how to get the last two columns of foreign key information. INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLE_CONSTRAINTS gets close, but doesn't have the data I'm looking for. Can someone help with this point? • SQL Server: Is it possible to prevent SQL Agent from failing a step on error?

  I have a stored procedure that runs custom backups for around 60 SQL servers (mixes 2000 through 2008R2). Occasionally, due to issues outside of my control (backup device inaccessible, network error, etc.) an individual backup on one or two databases will fail. This causes this entire step to fail, which means any subsequent backup commands are not executed and half of the databases on a given server may not be backed up. On the 2005+ boxes I am using TRY/CATCH blocks to manage these problems and continue backing up the remaining databases. On a 2000 server however, for example, I have no way to prevent this error from failing the entire step: Msg 3201, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot open backup device 'db-diff(\PATH\DB-DIFF-03-16-2010.DIF)'. Operating system error 5(Access is denied.). Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally. I am simply asking if anything like TRY/CATCH is possible in SQL 2000? I realize there are no built in methods for this, so I guess I am looking for some creativity. Even when wrapping each backup (or any failing statement) via sp_executesql the job fails instantly. Example: DECLARE @x INT, @iReturn INT PRINT 'Executing statement that will fail with 208.' EXEC @iReturn = Sp_executesql N'SELECT * from TABLETHATDOESNTEXIST;' PRINT Cast(@iReturn AS NVARCHAR) --In SSMS this return code prints. Executed as a job it fails and aborts before this statement.

• SQL Server Blocking Issue

  We currently have an issue that occurs roughly once a day on SQL 2005 database server, although the time it happens is not consistent. Basically, the database grinds to a halt, and starts refusing connections with the following error message. This includes logging into SSMS: A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The specified network name is no longer available.) Our CPU usage for SQL is usually around 15%, but when the DB is in it's broken state it's around 70%, so it's clearly doing something, even if no-one can connect. Even if I disable the web app that uses the database the CPU still doesn't go down. I am unable to restart the SQLSERVER process as it is unresponsive, so I have to end up killing the process manually, which then puts the DB into Suspect/Recovery mode (which I can fix but it's a pain). Below are some PerfMon stats I gathered when the DB was in it's broken state which might help. I have a bunch more if people want to request them: Active Transactions: 2 (Never Changes) Logical Connections: 34 (NC) Process Blocked: 16 (NC) User Connections: 30 (NC) Batch Request: 0 (NC) Active Jobs: 2 (NC) Log Truncations: 596 (NC) Log Shrinks: 24 (NC) Longest Running Transaction Time: 99 (NC) I guess they key is finding out what the DB is using it's CPU on, but as I can't even log into SSMS this isn't possible with the standard methods. Disturbingly, I can't even use the dedicated admin connection to get into SSMS. I get the same timout as with all other requests. Any advice, reccomendations, or even sympathy, is much appreciated!

I use now an app that remembers their position to restore it... Windows Update service dissapeared, along with BITS service, I managed to recover them and installed all updates availables today I'm going nuts looking for information about these errors. Solutions that didn't work: sfc /scannow Doesn't complain about anything All windows updates applied (after recovering missing Windows Update) ServerManager.log: Only one error all the time: Error (Id=0) System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x800706D9): No hay más extremos disponibles desde el asignador de extremos. • OpenVPN, Server 12.04, connect to machines in home LAN behind VPN server

  Problem: I've set up a working OpenVPN server, and am able to connect to it from anywhere using my mac laptop and tunnelblick. When I connect in, I'm assigned an IP address of 10.8.0.x, the server is 10.8.0.1, so I have no problems SSHing into it. Once SSHd in, I can even ping other machines (obviously) on my home network (192.168.1.x). Desired outcome: What I want, is, to connect to the VPN server, and instead of getting a 10.8.0.x address, I get a 192.168.1.x on my home network. I can't figure out how to talk to the OTHER machines on my home network WITHOUT being SSHd in to the VPN server. I'd like to just connect to my VPN server, then be a part of my home network. Attempted solutions: I've read that I need to set up routes, and/or enable IP forwarding. I enabled IP forwarding using sudo sysctl -w net.ipv4.ip_forward=1 and that doesn't seem to have done anything. I've also uncommented a line in the OpenVPN's server.conf file: # Push routes to the client to allow it # to reach other private subnets behind # the server. Remember that these # private subnets will also need # to know to route the OpenVPN client # address pool (10.8.0.0/255.255.255.0) # back to the OpenVPN server. push "route 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0" ;push "route 192.168.20.0 255.255.255.0" But still no luck, I still get a 10.8.0.x address... I've also read I may have to add routes to the router itself, but haven't tried that. Any help appreciated, thanks!

The problem I am having sounds almost exactly like the one described in this Microsoft KB article, except that the error I am getting is intermittent: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814398 The SQL Server is running under the Local System account (which I don't have authority to change), and the Access 97 .mdb file that the linked server points to is on a Win XP Pro machine on the same LAN as the SQL Server machine, inside of a shared folder with permissions set to "Everyone" and "Full Control". Now, if the linked server connection never worked, it would make more sense that the problem is merely a permissions issue with the Local System account as the KB article above suggests, but the maddening thing is that sometimes the connection works just fine. When it fails, the error message is always the same: Error 7399: OLE DB provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' reported an error. [OLE/DB provider returned message: Unspecified error] OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' IDBInitialize::Initialize returned 0x80004005: ]. Also, not only does the linked server setup occasionally work just fine on this one particular SQL Server, what is supposed to be exactly the same setup on 25 other servers works just fine EVERY TIME! Obviously, something in the non-working setup must not be exactly the same, but I'm having trouble figuring out where to look for the differences since the error message SQL Server returns is so vague. I know our sysadmins have had numerous issues with Active Directory replication across our domain, so my best guess is that there is some sort of odd group policy corruption going on, but I thought I'd ask here to see if I might be overlooking something more straightforward. Any ideas on how to further isolate the error would be greatly appreciated! For the record, here is a list of things I've already tried: Rebooting the SQL Server machine. Fixes the issue temporarily, then the error returns within a minute or two of startup. (This is why I suspect a rogue group policy that is slow to apply fouling things up.) Importing all database objects from the Access 97 mdb into a new, clean mdb file. Makes no difference. Moving the Access 97 mdb file to a local directory on the SQL Server machine instead of accessing it via a share on the Win XP Pro LAN machine. This works, but does not solve the problem because the mdb needs to be on the client machine for performance reasons and the ability to work "stand alone". Plus, the same shared folder access works fine on all other servers / clients on my network. Compared all the SQL Server, Windows Server, etc versions to a known working setup and everything appears to be the same.

• SQL Server 2008 Remote Access

  I'm having problems connecting to my SQL Server 2008 database from my computer. I have enabled remote connections as described in this answer (http://serverfault.com/questions/7798/how-to-enable-remote-connections-for-sql-server-2008). And I have added the ports listed on the microsoft support page to our Cisco Asa firewall and I'm still unable to connect. The error I'm getting from the SQL Management Studio is: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 10060) Once again, I have double and triple checked that remote connections are enabled under the database properties and that TCP is enabled on the configuration page. I've added tcp ports 135, 1433, 1434, 2382, 2383, and 4022 as well as udp 1434 to the firewall. I've also checked to make sure that 1433 is the static port that is set in the tcp section of the database server configuration. The ports should be configured correctly in the firewall since http/https and rdp are all working and the sql server ports are setup the same way. What am I missing here? Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Edit: I can connect to the server via TCP on the internal network. The servers are colocated in a datacenter and I can connect from my production box to my development box and vice versa. To me that indicates a firewall issue, but I've no idea what else to open. I've even tried allowing all tcp ports to that server without success.
