• Apple Service Diagnostic application on USB key?

  I found the following in a text file, and I would like to use the Apple Service Diagnostic Application from a bootable USB key but I cannot find where to download it or set it up? Also is this free software or does it require a separate licence? It sounds like it would be a useful tool for diagnosing Mac problems. The Apple Service Diagnostic application is designed to run both EFI and Mac OS X tests from an external USB hard drive. Apple Service Diagnostic (EFI) runs low-level tests of the hardware directly and does not require Mac OS X, while Apple Service Diagnostic (OS) uses Mac OS X to run tests. Booting and Using the Apple Service Diagnostic Application - Before using Apple Service Diagnostic, disconnect any Ethernet network, USB, and audio cables. - With the USB hard drive containing ASD 3S123 plugged into a USB port, restart the computer and hold down the option key as the computer boots up into the Startup Manager. To run ASD (EFI) select the "ASD EFI 3S123" drive icon and press return or select it with a mouse click. To run ASD (OS) select the "ASD OS 3S123" drive icon and press return or select it with a mouse click. ASD (EFI) will load in 20-30 seconds; ASD (OS) will load in 2-3 minutes. - After running ASD (OS) or ASD (EFI), press the Restart button to restart the computer back into the normal startup volume, or hold down the option key to get back to the Startup Manager. ASD is no longer delivered as an image to be restored onto a DVD. ASD 3S117 and newer versions requires installation onto an external USB hard drive. • Adding network share as the system account breaks Win7 backup to network

  (On Win7 Ultimate x64 SP1) So I've been using Win7 backup to \192.168.0.100\Backup\main-desktop\ for awhile without issue. Yesterday I tried to setup crashplan to synchronize my dropbox folder and a network share. I then found out that crashplan, as it runs under the system account, can't see my user mapped drives. So I created a startup script net use O: \192.168.0.100\Documents /USER:192.168.0.100\username password and set it to run, on startup, after the network interface is up, as the system account. (the username & password are the same for the net use script above, the locally logged in user, and the explicit username/password entered in windows backup). I woke up this morning to find error flags from the windows backup and get "Network location cannot be used" (0x800704B3). If I disable the startup task & reboot then windows backup works fine. I'm not sure why having a mapped drive for another user is killing windows backup (same server, different folder). I can work around the issue by using another program to synchronize the two folders, but I'm completely in the dark as to why this happens (and it's 100% repeatable). Uninstalling the crashplan client doesn't change anything - it's the net use run under the system account that breaks win7 backup (to a network location).

• Group Policy installation failed error 1274

  I'm trying to deploy an MSI via the Group Policy in Active Directory. But these are the errors I'm getting in the System event log after logging in: The assignment of application XStandard from policy install failed. The error was : %%1274 The removal of the assignment of application XStandard from policy install failed. The error was : %%2 Failed to apply changes to software installation settings. The installation of software deployed through Group Policy for this user has been delayed until the next logon because the changes must be applied before the user logon. The error was : %%1274 The Group Policy Client Side Extension Software Installation was unable to apply one or more settings because the changes must be processed before system startup or user logon. The system will wait for Group Policy processing to finish completely before the next startup or logon for this user, and this may result in slow startup and boot performance. When I reboot and log in again I simply get the same messages about needing to perform the update before the next logon. I'm on a Windows Vista 32-bit laptop. I'm rather new to deploying via group policy so what other information would be helpful in determining the issue? I tried a different MSI with the same results. I'm able to install the MSI using the command line and msiexec when logged into the computer, so I know the MSI is working ok at least.

  I am trying to configure a startup script which will startup tomcat, monitor the catalina.out for the string "Server startup", and then run another process. I have been trying various combinations of tail -f with grep and awk, but haven't got anything working yet. The main issue I am having seems to be with forcing the tail to die after grep or awk have matched the string. I have simplified to the following test case. test.sh is listed below: #!/bin/sh rm -f child.out ./child.sh > child.out & tail -f child.out | grep -q B child.sh is listed below: #!/bin/sh echo A sleep 20 echo B echo C sleep 40 echo D The behavior I am seeing is that grep exits after 20 seconds , however the tail will take a further 40 seconds to die. I understand why this is happening - tail will only notice that the pipe is gone when it writes to it which only happens when data gets appended to the file. This is compounded by the fact that tail is to be buffering the data and outputting the B and C characters as a single write (I confirmed this by strace). I have attempted to fix that with solutions I found elsewhere, such as using unbuffer command, but that didn't help. Anybody got any ideas for how to get this working how I expect it? Or ideas for waiting for successful Tomcat start (thinking about waiting for a TCP port to know it has started, but suspect that will become more complex that what I am trying to do now). I have managed to get it working with awk doing a "killall tail" on match, but I am not happy with that solution. Note I am trying to get this to work on RHEL4.

• Installing Tomcat on CentOS 5

  Disclaimer: I am not a server admin, I am a windows user that has lead a life of sinful installation wizards and drag and drop I'm attempting to install Tomcat on CentOS 5 hosted by a MediaTemple dedicated virtual server. I basically followed this guide: Installed jpackage and configured the yum.repo.d jpackage file to set enabled=1 Used yum to install java (yum install java) Downloaded the binary distribution of tomcat with "wget http://archive.apache.org/dist/tomcat/tomcat-6/v6.0.14/bin/apache-tomcat-6.0.14.tar.gz" set JAVA_HOME to point at the jdk location I found with "export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0/" I gunzip/untar the Tomcat files and run ./startup.sh to start the Tomcat server. That is supposed to put the Tomcat server at myserver.com:8080 - however, I just get a could not contact host error when I try to browse to it (or when I try 'curl localhost:8080' from SSH) After I type ./startup.sh, here is the console output: [root@myserver bin]# ./startup.sh Using CATALINA_BASE: /root/apache-tomcat-6.0.14 Using CATALINA_HOME: /root/apache-tomcat-6.0.14 Using CATALINA_TMPDIR: /root/apache-tomcat-6.0.14/temp Using JRE_HOME: /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0/ [root@myserver bin]# Is there a step I have missed here? • Tomcat Custom MBean

  Does anyone know how to deploy a custom MBean to Tomcat? So far I`ve found this http://www.junlu.com/list/3/8871.html. I copied my jar with my MBean to Tomcat lib directory so the Custom class loader should pick it up. I then followed the instructions but I kept getting the exception below. My MBean does definitely have a public constructor. • Oracle: Getting ORA-01195 and ORA-01110 when attempting resetlogs

  I am trying to get our database to startup. When I login to sqlplus and do a startup, I get the message: Total System Global Area 534462464 bytes Fixed Size 2215064 bytes Variable Size 331350888 bytes Database Buffers 192937984 bytes Redo Buffers 7958528 bytes Database mounted. ORA-01589: must use RESETLOGS or NORESETLOGS option for database open So I do a shutdown, startup mount (which works fine) and then run: SQL> alter database recover using backup controlfile until cancel; alter database recover using backup controlfile until cancel * ERROR at line 1: ORA-00283: recovery session canceled due to errors ORA-19909: datafile 1 belongs to an orphan incarnation ORA-01110: data file 1: '/<path>/system01.dbf' SQL> alter database open resetlogs; alter database open resetlogs * ERROR at line 1: ORA-01195: online backup of file 1 needs more recovery to be consistent ORA-01110: data file 1: '/<path>/system01.dbf' I know I've used instructions to get me past this error before, but I seem to be having trouble tracking it down. A bit of history: We wanted to refresh the data in this from another db so we attempted to do a expdb/impdb into this instance. The impdb did not complete correctly and got an end of file error message in it and hung (I still have the message in a log if it's important). Since the instance would start at this point, we decided to use the hotbackup process we have to restore the db. The hotbackups are from another server/instance. We went through the same process 2 weeks ago. At the point of recreating the control file is where we got to the issue above.

• How to turn off Tomcat logging in Eclipse?

  I develop a Vaadin project in Eclipse that I start through Tomcat 6 which gets started directly by Eclipse. Tomcat prints an enormous amount of log messages though on each start which makes it hard to see the output of my own Application. I have already replaced all log levels in tomcat6/conf/logging.properties by WARNING (e.g. java.util.logging.ConsoleHandler.level = WARNING) but I still get many INFO messages. How can I turn this off or restrict the log messages to WARNING? • Ubuntu odd mouse and keyboard behavior when window gains inner focus

  This morning on my Ubuntu 10.10 system when I open a window - for example, system-preferences-about me, if I click in to a field such as "work email", I can no longer close the window with the mouse! Clicking the X on the window will not work. Also, I loose the ability to click on anything else - clicking on the desktop, icons, menus, workspaces, etc. do not work. Even the effect when you hover over a folder on the desktop and that folder highlights - that stops until the window is closed. If I open this same screen but do not click in to a field, everything is fine - I can close the window with the X and everything else works fine. Same thing happens with several other windows I tried. Even calculator - I can open it, everything is fine until I click on a button in the calculator - then no ability to click on anything else. Have to Alt-F4 to close the window. The system is only about a week old from a fresh install (64 bit ubuntu - quad core amd machine). I uninstalled wine, turned off remote desktop/disabled in startup, also in startup disabled visual assistance, bluetooth, dropbox, klipper. Reboot, no difference. The only other thing non-standard I see in startup is nvidia. Using a logitec usb mouse, saitek usb keyboard. Was working fine yesterday. I can not think of anything I did / installed yesterday. I switched themse, then went to update manager and saw two x server / x org related updates and installed them, reboot and NOW IT IS FINE! However, then I re-enabled dropbox, klipper and remote desktop rebooted and the problem is back. Again I disabled and rebooted. Problem is still there!! So somehow I fixed it at least for a few minutes, but now it is back and I am out of ideas.

• Can not boot windows XP from cloned hard disk - what can I do?

  My configuration: a PC (some years old) with MSI K8N-Neo-4F Motherboard, 1 GB RAM. Disk 1 (Maxtor, SATA II, 250 GB): 2 Partitions, on Partition 1 (48 GB): Windows XP Professional (NTFS) on Partition 2 (190 GB): data (NTFS) I wanted to have a larger and faster disk (the PC is incredibly slow and permanently the disk is rattling when I try to open an application or during Windows startup), so I took Disk 2 (Seagate, Sata II, 500 GB), installed in the PC, created at first a 400 GB-partition at the end of the disk and cloned the data to it, which worked well Installed a swap partition and a partition for Ubuntu Linux 12.10 on the first "part" of the disk so I was able to boot Linux and the old Windows XP with the Linux "System selection" at startup. Now I wanted to move Windows XP to the new disk, deleted the Linux partitions cloned Windows XP to the new disk (with free tools - EASESUS), left both disks in the PC and tried to select the new hard drive during boot as boot partition. This did not work, the PC refused to boot from this second disk. I tried many things like making the boot partition on the 2nd drive "active" in the Windows System Preferences modifying the boot.ini file to boot from the second disk - tried to boot from it, but ended with an error message stating that it was not possible to boot from this disk because of a hardware failure or something else or so removing the original disk and plugging the new one on the same SATA port as the original one - also booting failed with an error message repairing the MBR by booting into recovery mode from the Windows XP Installation CD-ROM, selecting the second disk and doing "FIXMBR" which said that everything was fine with the MBR. after that at least the PC tried to boot from the newer disk and then startup was hanging during the blue screen with the Windows Logo.... no luck. ... deleting the cloned partition and cloning again - this time with Macrium Reflect Free version... - no success during booting. I tried a lot of things with no success, so I wonder what I am doing wrong?! What could I do to successfully clone my Win XP partition to replace the original disk by a larger one which is bootable.

  i am creating my own portable server but i can't make it to run the phpMyAdmin, the mysql, php and apache is running except for phpMyAdmin. • UppercuT &ndash; Custom Extensions Now With PowerShell and Ruby

  Arguably, one of the most powerful features of UppercuT (UC) is the ability to extend any step of the build process with a pre, post, or replace hook. This customization is done in a separate location from the build so you can upgrade without wondering if you broke the build. There is a hook before each step of the build has run. There is a hook after. And back to power again, there is a replacement hook. If you don’t like what the step is doing and/or you want to replace it’s entire functionality, you just drop a custom replacement extension and UppercuT will perform the custom step instead. Up until recently all custom hooks had to be written in NAnt. Now they are a little sweeter because you no longer need to use NAnt to extend UC if you don’t want to. You can use PowerShell. Or Ruby.   Let that sink in for a moment. You don’t have to even need to interact with NAnt at all now. Extension Points On the wiki, all of the extension points are shown. The basic idea is that you would put whatever customization you are doing in a separate folder named build.custom. If you are not signing your scripts you will need to change a setting in the UppercuT.config file. This does impose a security risk, because this allows PS to now run any PS script. Now that you are fully aware of any security holes you may open and are okay with that, let’s move on. Let’s create a file called default.replace.build.ps1 in the build.custom folder. Open that file in notepad and let’s add this to it: write-host "hello - I'm a custom task written in Powershell!" Now, let’s run build.bat. You could get some PSake action going here. I won’t dive into that in this post though. Customize UppercuT Builds With Ruby If you want to customize any extension point with Ruby, just add .rb to the end of the file name and write your custom tasks in Ruby.  Let’s write a custom ruby task for UC. If you were thinking it would be the same as the one we just wrote for PS, you’d be right! In the build.custom folder, lets create a file called default.replace.build.rb. Open that file in notepad and let’s put this in there: puts "I'm a custom ruby task!" Now, let’s run build.bat again. That’s chunky bacon. UppercuT and Albacore.NET Just for fun, I wanted to see if I could replace the compile.step with a Rake task. Not just any rake task, Albacore’s msbuild task. Albacore is a suite of rake tasks brought about by Derick Bailey to make building .NET with Rake easier. It has quite a bit of support with developers that are using Rake to build code. In my build.custom folder, I drop a compile.replace.step.rb. I also put in a separate file that will contain my Albacore rake task and I call that compile.rb. What are the contents of compile.replace.step.rb? rake = 'rake' arguments= '-f ' + Dir.pwd + '/../build.custom/compile.rb' #puts "Calling #{rake} " + arguments system("#{rake} " + arguments) Since the custom extensions call ruby, we have to shell back out and call rake. That’s what we are doing here. We also realize that ruby is called from the build folder, so we need to back out and dive into the build.custom folder to find the file that is technically next to us. We could grab the current directory and then point the task specifically to a folder if we have projects that are at different levels. We want the verbosity to be quiet so we set that as well. • Generating Report for NUnit

   All source codes for this post can be found at my github.Time ago, I received a request that people ask me how they can generate reports of the results of testing using NUnit? In fact, I may never do this. In the little world of my programming, I only care about the test results, red-green-refactoring, and that was it. When I got that question quite a bit unexpected, I knew that I could use NCover to generate reports, but reports of NCover too simple, it did not give us more details on the number of test cases, test methods, ... And I began to see about creating interesting report for NUnit.I was lucky to find an open source here. Its authors call it NUnit2Report, but one disadvantage is it only running on .NET 1.0. Indeed too old compared to the current version 4.0. And I try to download the preview, but I could not run. I had to open its source code and found that it uses XSLT to convert the output of NUnit results from XML to HTML. Nothing really special, because I also knew that after NUnit run output file extension is XML is created. Author only use this file to convert to HTML using XSLT. And I decided to convert it to. NET 4.0, because I will not have to code from scratch. Conversion work made me take some time, but was lucky that I finally have what I want. Thanks Gilles for the this OSS. I will send a mail to thank him for his efforts but put this out for the OSS. Now I will show people how to do it. I used the auto built NAnt and NUnit for running TestCase, and I use Selenium testing framework. After writing three TestCase using Selenium, I ran NUnit, and got the following results: There are 1 fail and 2s success. In the bin directory of this project will have the NUnit output file as shown below: Then I create a build file, and a bat file for easy running (can use PowerShell is here also.) Double click in the bat file to create a report like this:       Finally open the index.html file in the folder to view report. As everyone can see, it is the TestCase and divide very clearly, that I meet the requirements. This is really good. Once again I really thank NUnit2Report from Gilles. • Breakout ball collision detection, bouncing against the walls [solved]

  I'm currently trying to program a breakout game to distribute it as an example game for my own game engine. http://game-engine-for-java.googlecode.com/ But the problem here is that I can't get the bouncing condition working properly. • Java web-app debugging not possible due to direct undeploy on debug

  When i try to debug my webapp it starts up the tomcat server and the application, but shuts down the debugger shortly before the app gets usable. I see the debugging toolbar for a second before it vanishes again, though the app keeps running. • Write Tomcat 5.5 output to one of Tomcat's log files

  I'd like that all the output that is shown in Tomcat's console will be saved into a file including the output on startup and shutdown of Tomcat. How can I do this? I looked at apache documentation about logging, Do I need to change something in the logging.properties can I trust log4j to write message from the first message on startup to the last message on shutdown?

• Why does a JRuby application on App Engine take so long to start?

  I'm considering using JRuby on App Engine but have heard that Juby app on App Engine have a long startup lag. Why is this? Is it because the JRuby jar files are so large that a cold startup requires them to be loaded into memory before the app can start serving? That would be my guess but I'm not sure if that's a precise technical explanation.

  We have a Spring MVC web app (WAR) deploying to Tomcat (6.0.35) that launches a thread inside a separate JVM at deploy time (don't ask why - not my design) and then communicates with that thread via RMI over port 8888. Despite being totally convoluded, this was working perfectly fine up until yesterday, and now the thread is failing at startup and despite our best efforts to add logging into the mix, we are hitting a wall.
