• Failed to create symbolic link to keytool

  Keytool is /usr/bin/keytool and points to /etc/alternatives/keytool which in turn points to /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk-i386/jre/bin/keytool. Now I have installed java version 1.7.0_45 so I need to change keytool to the new path : /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0_45/jre/bin/keytool I tried deleting the /usr/bin/keytool with rm -rf and then adding a new link like : sudo ln -s /usr/bin/keytool /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0_45/jre/bin/keytool but what I get is ln: failed to create symbolic link `/usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0_45/jre/bin/keytool': File exists I also tried : sudo update-alternatives --config keytool There is only one alternative in link group keytool: /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk-i386/jre/bin/keytool Nothing to configure. update-alternatives: warning: forcing reinstallation of alternative /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk-i386/jre/bin/keytool because link group keytool is broken. but doesn't works too. • DirectX11 Swap Chain RGBA vs BGRA Format

  I was wondering if anyone could elaborate any further on something that's been bugging me. In DirectX9 the main supported back buffer formats were D3DFMT_X8R8B8G8 and D3DFMT_A8R8G8B8 (Both being BGRA in layout). http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/bb174314(v=vs.85).aspx With the initial version of DirectX10 their was no support for BGRA and all the textbooks and online tutorials recommend DXGI_FORMAT_R8G8B8A8_UNORM (being RGBA in layout). Now with DirectX11 BGRA is supported again and it seems as if microsoft recommends using a BGRA format as the back buffer format. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/hh465096.aspx Are there any suggestions or are there performance implications of using one or the other? (I assume not as obviously by specifying the format of the underlying resource the runtime will handle what bits your passing through and than infer how to utilise them based on the format.)

Recently I was going over the best practices of transactions log and I come across following statement. The log size must be at least twice the size of largest supported DML operation (using uncompressed data volumes). First of all I totally agree with this statement. • Would you recommend Head First Programming for someone new?

  My brother is just starting out college. He's studying the same thing I am here in Bolivia; Systems Engineer which is the equivalent of what a CS degree is in the US. Being his big brother and a programmer myself I really want to guide him and give him the right material to learn and become good at programming. My motives are selfish I admit, I want him to become really good so he can teach me things in the future. :) After poking around the web, I found Head First Programming. This book seems to teach the fundamentals of programming, using Python as the language. Would you recommend this book as his first book ever? Would learning Python as his first language stunt him somehow? What are your thoughts and suggestions? Thanks!

• How can I secure an installation of MediaWiki?

  I want to run an installation of MediaWiki as a Internet-accessible personal wiki, running on wiki.mysite.com. However, I want to ensure that I am the only one who can read and write to this wiki. In the future, I may explicitly give other people read and/or read/write access, so the method of securing the wiki should account for that as well. I see two options: I can use some MediaWiki plugin or I can secure the subdomain with HTTP authentication. However, I'm not sure what the advantages and disadvantages of either are in the long run. Suggestions or advice as to what plugins or authentication methods might be most reliable?

  So, I am pretty new to the world of game development, so I am a bit fuzzy on what I require. Could someone suggest a game engine that I could use? I need it to be light weight (my game won't require that much power) and have networking functionality for multiplay or even an MMO aspect. The game I am making is like a game show, so it is your basic choose and answer hit the buzzer kind of game. Any suggestions? I would also like it to be open source or at the least free. I would like to support open source projects.

• Enforce SSIS naming conventions using BI-xPress

  A long long long time ago (in 2006 in fact) I published a blog post entitled Suggested Best Practises and naming conventions in which I suggested a bunch of acronyms that folks could use to prefix object names in their SSIS packages, thus allowing easier identification of those objects in log records, here is a sample of some of those suggestions: If you have adopted these naming conventions (and I am led to believe that a bunch of people have) then you might like to know that you can now check for adherence to these conventions using a tool called BI-xPress from Pragmatic Works. BI-xPress includes a feature called the Best Practices Analyzer that scans your packages and assess them according to some rules that you specify. In addition Pragmatic Works have made available a collection of these rules that adhere to the naming conventions I specified in 2006 You can download this collection however I recommend you first read the accompanying article that demonstrates the capabilities of the Best Practices Analyzer.   I'm attempting to create a dashboard so that people not intimately involved with the project can get an indication of project's health. I'm struggling with determining what to put on said dashboard. I think it needs to be brief to be useful, yet complete. The project I'm working on depends on both 3rd party contractors, external hardware and of course my team's effort. Are there any suggestions or guidelines on how to encapsulate it all in a relatively easy manner? • Help Protect Your Children with the CEOP Enhanced Internet Explorer 8

  Do you want to make Internet Explorer safer and more helpful for you and family? Then join us as we look at the CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre) enhanced version of Internet Explorer 8. Setting CEOP Up We chose to install the whole CEOP pack in order to have access to complete set of CEOP Tools. The install process will be comprised of two parts…it will begin with CEOP branded windows showing the components being installed… Note: The components can be downloaded separately for those who only want certain CEOP components added to their browser. Then it will move to the traditional Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 install windows. One thing that we did notice is that here you will be told that you will need to restart your computer but in other windows a log off/log on process is mentioned. Just to make certain that everything goes smoothly we recommend restarting your computer when the installation process is complete. In the EULA section you can see the versions of Windows that the CEOP Pack works with. Once you get past the traditional Microsoft install windows you will be dropped back into the CEOP branded windows. CEOP in Action After you have restarted your computer and opened Internet Explorer you will notice that your homepage has been changed. When it comes to your children that is not a bad thing in this instance. It will also give you an opportunity to look through the CEOP online resources. For the moment you may be wondering where everything is but do not worry. First you can find the two new search providers in the drop-down menu for your “Search Bar” and select a new default if desired. The second thing to look for are the new links that have been added to your “Favorites Menu”. These links can definitely be helpful for you and your family. The third part will require your “Favorites Bar” to be visible in order to see the “Click CEOP Button”. If you have not previously done so you will need to turn on subscribing for “Web Slices”. Click on “Yes” to finish the subscription process. Clicking on the “CEOP Button” again will show all kinds of new links to help provide information for you and your children. Notice that the top part is broken down into “topic categories” while the bottom part is set up for “age brackets”…very nice for helping you focus on the information that you want and/or need. Looking for information and help on a particular topic? Clicking on the “Cyberbullying Link” for example will open the following webpage with information about cyberbullying and a link to get help with the problem. Need something that is focused on your child’s age group? Clicking on the “8-10? Link” as an example opened this page. Want information that is focused on you? The “Parent? Link” leads to this page. The “topic categories & age brackets” make the CEOP Button a very helpful and “family friendly” addition to Internet Explorer. Perhaps you (or your child) want to conduct a search for something that is affecting your child. As you type in a “search term” both of the search providers will provide helpful suggestions for dealing with the problem. We felt that these were very nice suggestions in both instances here… Conclusion We have been able to give you a good peek at what the CEOP Tools can do but the best way to see how helpful it can be for you and your family is try it for yourself. Your children’s safety and happiness is worth it. • What features would you like to have in PHP?

  Since it's the holiday season now and everybody's making wishes, I wonder - which language features you would wish PHP would have added? I am interested in some practical suggestions/wishes for the language. By practical I mean: Something that can be practically done (not: "I wish PHP would guess what my code means and fix bugs for me" or "I wish any code would execute under 5ms") Something that doesn't require changing PHP into another language (not: "I wish they'd drop $ signs and use space instead of braces" or "I wish PHP were compiled, statically typed and had # in it's name") Something that would not require breaking all the existing code (not: "Let's rename 500 functions and change parameter order for them") Something that does change the language or some interesting aspect of it (not: "I wish there was extension to support for XYZ protocol" or "I wish bug #12345 were finally fixed") Something that is more than a rant (not: "I wish PHP wouldn't suck so badly") Anybody has any good wishes? • How could you parallelise a 2D boids simulation

  How could you program a 2D boids simulation in such a way that it could use processing power from different sources (clusters, gpu). In the above example, the non-coloured particles move around until they cluster (yellow) and stop moving. The problem is that all the entities could potentially interact with each other although an entity in the top left is unlikely to interact with one in the bottom right. If the domain was split into different segments, it may speed the whole thing up, But if an entity wanted to cross into another segment there may be problems. At the moment this simulation works with 5000 entities with a good frame rate, I would like to try this with millions if possible. Would it be possible to use quad trees to further optimise this? Any other suggestions?

• Finding a problem in some task [closed]

  Recently I competed in nation wide programming contest finals. Not unexpectedly all problems were algorithmic. I lost (40 points out of 600. Winner got ~300). I know why I lost very well - I don't know how to find actual problem in those obfuscated tasks which are life-blood of every competition. I think that being self-taught and not well versed in algorithms got me too. As side effect of learning things myself I know how to search for information, however all I could find are couple questions about learning algorithms. For now I put Python Algorithms: Mastering Basic Algorithms in the Python Language and Analysis of Algorithms which I found in those questions to my "to read" list. That leaves my first problem of not knowing how to find a problem unsolved. Will that ability come with learning algorithms? Or does it need some special attention? Any suggestions are welcomed.

• I can't find my backup for the cpanel in whm/cpanel

  The Problem: I have made a complete backup from the cpanel for the whole home folder. I have placed this folder in the default home directory. Thereafter, i tried to restore this file from the WHM, but i couldn't find it. Does anyone know what causes such problems? • Are there real world applications where the use of prefix versus postfix operators matters?

  In college it is taught how you can do math problems which use the ++ or -- operators on some variable referenced in the equation such that the result of the equation would yield different results if you switched the operator from postfix to prefix or vice versa. Are there any real world applications of using postfix or prefix operator where it makes a difference as to which you use? It doesn't seem to me (maybe I just don't have enough experience yet in programming) that there really is much use to having the different operators if it only applies in math equations. EDIT: Suggestions so far include: function calls //f(++x) != f(x++) loop comparison //while (++i < MAX) != while (i++ < MAX)

• Project Management, Developer being project managers manager

  I am in the planning stages of a project and am looking to hire a project manager. I want be doing some coding and keeping an eye on all parts of the project but feel a project manager will get better results than I could. I can project manage the project and not code and hire another coder or code myself and hire a project manager. I am worried that the project manager will fell impeded by having the project owner as part of the development team. If I run the project, the team might fall apart causing the project to fail. To stick within budget, I have to be involved in one capacity or another. Does anyone have experience with this situation or suggestions?

• Can't adjust screen brightness on Macbook Pro 10,1 Ubuntu 13.10

  I recently installed Ubuntu on my retina Macbook Pro (following this great guide: http://cberner.com/2013/03/01/installing-ubuntu-13-04-on-macbook-pro-retina/) Everything works fine so far however the screen brightness / backlight cannot be adjusted neither by using the assigned key nor by any other means. I know, I'm not the first to address this problem, but all the suggested solutions I found so far did not work for me. I unsuccessfully tried the following: Including Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1" in the Devices-Section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf the application xbacklight I also haven't found any file such as mbp_backlight or apple_backlight on my system which probably would be a starting point I'm using the Nvidia-driver. (BTW: With the nouveau-driver, the keys to adjust the brightness work. However, with the nouveau driver Ubuntu does not resume from suspend mode) Any suggestions what I can do? Thanks!

In the spirit of Dimecasts.net, we’re limiting each episode to ten minutes as we thought the development community could benefit from short, focused episodes. We’re just getting started, but I’m really pleased with our progress and I’m very excited about what’s to come.  The first three episodes are focused on the .NET stack (specifically around Visual Studio Solution Setup, Managing .NET External Dependencies and Working with the ASP.NET Membership Provider) but since we work for a mixed shop of .NET and Java development, I’m sure we’ll eventually introduce all sorts of topics. We’re currently putting together a list of shows. If you have suggestions, please let me know. At the moment I am checking out Basket (for KDE), that seems to point to the right direction, but still lacks much of the functionality of OneNote and is very buggy unfortunately.
