  I've got a bit of fettish for language design and I'm currently playing around with my own hobby language. (http://rogeralsing.com/2010/04/14/playing-with-plastic/) One thing that really makes my mind bleed is "generators" and the "yield" keyword. I know C# uses AST transformation to transform enumerator methods into statemachines. But how does it work in other languages? Is there any way to get generator support in a language w/o AST transformation? e.g. Does languages like Python or Ruby resort to AST transformations to solve this to? (The question is how generators are implemented under the hood in different languages, not how to write a generator in one of them)

  After asking this question, it looks like I need to use Ruby's PTY Module, of which there is no documentation. I have written this code to try to push content to Google App Engine because the python command sometimes asks me for my username and password.   I've downloaded a patch from some site and trying to apply it (twisted, python web framework). Several hunks failed. How do I automate manual patching process using vim? Details: I'm trying to automate the process of applying failed hunks. Many tiny changes, each about adding/removing 1-2 chars. Difficult to see. I Have to create two new temporary files and :diffthis them manually to see the difference. Yes, outside VCS. I can imagine a neat way to deal with it using git, but I would prefer to avoid creating git repo for that.

  Hullo First, I want to use bash for this and the script should run on as many systems as possible (I don't know if the target system will have python or whatever installed). Here's the problem: I have a file with binary data and I need to replace a few bytes in a certain position. I've come up with the following to direct bash to the offset and show me that it found the place I want: dd bs=1 if=file iseek=24 conv=block cbs=2 | hexdump Now, to use "file" as the output: echo anInteger | dd bs=1 of=hextest.txt oseek=24 conv=block cbs=2 This seems to work just fine, I can review the changes made in a hex editor. Problem is, "anInteger" will be written as the ASCII representation of that integer (which makes sense) but I need to write the binary representation. How do I tell the command to convert the input to binary (possibly from a hex)?

  when using the jquery ui autocomplete combobox, i would thought there would be an option to force only valid key entry based on the list. Is there anyway to not allow invalid keys so you can only enter valid items in the list? also, is there a way to set a default value of the combobox. if my list has (csharp, java, python) i can start typing "abcds . ." and it lets me type it in. I want only valid entries to be allowed.

  I'm trying to calculate the data needed to generate a box plot which means I need to figure out the 1st and 3rd Quartiles along with the median. I have found some solutions for doing it in Postgresql however they seem to depend on either PL/Python or PL/R which it seems like Heroku does not have either enabled for their postgresql databases. In fact I ran "select lanname from pg_language;" and only got back "internal". I also found some code to do it in pure ruby but that seems somewhat inefficient to me. I'm rather new to Box Plots, Postgresql, and Ruby on Rails so I'm open to suggestions on how I should handle this. There is a possibility to have a lot of data which is why I'm concerned with performance however if the solution ends up being too complex I may just do it in ruby and if my application gets big enough to warrant it get my own Postgresql I can host somewhere else. *note: since I was only able to post one link, cause I'm new, I decided to share a pastie with some relevant information

  I have some dylibs to load from python with ctypes. I can load libbass.dylib without problem, but I can't load the self-compiled libmp3lame.dylib. Here is the error I get. OSError: dlopen(libmp3lame.dylib, 6): no suitable image found. Did find: libmp3lame.dylib: mach-o, but wrong architecture Then, I inspect the file type of those libs. Here is the result of libbass.dylib: libbass.dylib: Mach-O universal binary with 2 architectures libbass.dylib (for architecture i386): Mach-O dynamically linked shared library i386 libbass.dylib (for architecture ppc): Mach-O dynamically linked shared library ppc And here is the self-compiled one: libmp3lame.dylib: Mach-O 64-bit dynamically linked shared library x86_64 I did compile the lame library with the install instructions: ./configure make make install I'm new to mac system, here comes the problem: how to build the libmp3lame.dylib so that it supports different architecture I want?   I am creating an interpreter for my extension to HQ9+, which has the following extra command called V: V: Interpretes the code as Lua, Brainfuck, INTERCAL, Ruby, ShellScript, Perl, Python, PHP in that order, and if even one error has occoured, run the HQ9+-ABC code again most of them have libraries, BF and INTERCAL can be interpreted without a library, but the problem lies in ShellScript. How can I run a shellscript from my C++ application ( =the HQ9+-ABC interpreter) and when it's done, get the error code (0 = succeded, all others = failed)? • Compiling PHP with GD crashes with EXC_BREAKPOINT (SIGTRAP) on PPC Mac

  First of all, I should say that I have searched the whole Internet for this problem but I couldn't find any solution yet. I have a Mac mini PowerPC (PPC) and I run Apache webserver (httpd-2.2.22) with PHP (5.4.0) and I do all the configure & compilation jobs by myself. If configure with: './configure' '--prefix=/usr/local/php5' '--mandir=/usr/share/man' '--infodir=/usr/share/info' '--sysconfdir=/etc' '--with-config-file-path=/etc' '--with-zlib' '--with-zlib-dir=/usr' '--with-openssl=/usr' '--without-iconv' '--enable-exif' '--enable-ftp' '--enable-mbstring' '--enable-mbregex' '--enable-sockets' '--with-mysql=/usr/local/mysql' '--with-pdo-mysql=/usr/local/mysql' '--with-mysqli=/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysql_config' '--with-apxs2=/usr/local/apache2/bin/apxs' '--with-mcrypt' then the PHP works flawlessly. But if I add the GD module by adding these to the script above: '--with-gd' '--with-jpeg-dir=/usr/local/lib' '--with-freetype-dir=/usr/X11R6' '--with-png-dir=/usr/X11R6' '--with-xpm-dir=/usr/X11R6' the PHP gets configured and compiled without any errors but it causes EXC_BREAKPOINT (SIGTRAP) (see the Crash Reporter log below) when I request a page which calls PHP module. It's obvious that something related to the GD module is causing this, probably FreeType module because it's present in the log but it may not be definite of course. When the PHP crashes (or more accurately, httpd) the CPU goes 100% for 10 to 15 seconds until it recovers. I need to use the GD module and keep the Mac mini PowerPC.   It isn't so interesting to find out what this text editor here or that IRC client there was programmed with, also it isn't really hard and neither are there really suprising things to come out. Wow so it was programmed in Python, I didn't expect that. What I'm asking is: What are the things that we daily see, use or generally need programmed with? To name a few (really only a few of those out there): My alarm clock It has many features so it would probably be hard programming it with assembler or whatever, so did they probably use a programming language? If yes, which? My electrical tooth brush The (stupid) board computer of my car. (6 years old, has few features but a red LED display showing me how cold/warm it is outside and how much gas I'm using up per hour at the moment) Those (old) plastic mini-mini computers with the LCD(?) displays that only had one game available on them: PacMan, tetris or so.   I have a script that I want to run as a daemon listening on a low-numbered port (< 1024) Script is in python, though answers in perl are also acceptable. The script is being daemonized using start-stop-daemon in a startup script, which may complicate the answer What I really (think) don't want is to type ps -few and see this process running with a "root" on it's line. How do I do it? ( from my less-than-fully-educated-about-system-calls perspective, I can see 3 avenues, Run the script as root (no --user/--group/--chuid to start-stop-daemon), and have it de-escalate it's user after it claims the port Setuid root on the script (chmod u+s), and run the script as the running user, (via --user/--group/--chuid to start-stop-daemon, the startup script still has to be called as root), in the script, acquire root privileges, claim the port, and then revert back to normal user something else i'm unaware of )

  Hi! I'm relatively new to Django and I'm designing a website that primarily needs usability experience, speaking of optimized CSS, HTML5 and UI stuff. It's very easy to use Django for data/Model centric design. Just designing a couple of Python classes and ./manage.py syncdb - there's your Model. But I'm dealing with a significant amount of View centric challenges. (Different user classes, different tasks, different design challenges.) The official Django tutorial cursorily goes through using a "Template". Is there any Design centric guide for Django, or a set of Templates that are ready and useable? I don't want to start from scratch using JS, HTML5, Ajax and everything. From the Model layer perspective Django is very rapid and delivering a working base system. I wonder whether there's something like that for the Views.

Are there other differences? • How does load balancing work with multiple server with multiple DBs

  I guess what im looking for is a description on how this all works together. I'm used to setting up one server with maybe another server to handel the DB. My question is how does the load balancer work where do all the script(php,python) files go? If i make a change to one i have to rsync them to all the server that the balancer refers to? Also does each server need client side DB's installed so they can reference the DB's that are on other servers? If there is a site that explains all this i would be happy to read it.

  In the context of "Keys and Entity Groups" article by google: http://code.google.com/appengine/docs/python/datastore/transactions.html 1) "Only use entity groups when they are needed for transactions" 2) "Every entity belongs to an entity group, a set of one or more entities that can be manipulated in a single transaction." It seems like entity groups exist only for the use of transactions, i.e. making one transaction possible between all entities in a group. My question is then why are there parent-child relations between entities and not just a simple declaration of entities to be in a single group (that is defining A,B,C to be in the same group as opposed to defining relations between them "A (parent of) B, B (parent of C)"). What is the benefit from using parent-child relation model when the only purpose is for entities to be in the same group to make transaction possible? Thanks Joel

• What programs should I write to truly experience this fancy new language ?

  Tried Scheme at one point, just built up half of a "math" and "string" library before getting bored... Similar experience with Java, but stopped early because I was appalled at the lack of operator overloading. When you try out a new language, is there a program/game/function/exercise/problem that you use to get into the hot meaty center and really EXPERIENCE the language? I've been wanted to try Python, Ruby, some lisps, etc but can't seem to find any meaningful work to do with them, or any reason to use them for anything over languages I already know. Sorry this is a discussion, but you are EXACTLY the people I want to get input from on this

• Django admin interface upload failing on request data read error

  Hi All, This is an updated version of an old question I asked. I've now done a lot more testing, plus the old question got hijacked. I'm getting a request data read error when trying to upload files to the Django admin interface. Files under about 150k work, but bigger files always fail and almost always at around 192k (that's 3 chunks) completed, sometimes at around 160k. The Exception I get is below. File "/usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/django/http/multipartparser.py", line 405, in read return self._file.read(num_bytes) IOError: request data read error I've tried Chrome and Firefox on Windows and Firefox on Mac - Same results. I can upload to other sites so I don't think it's my connection. I'm running python 2.4, django 1.1, mod_wsgi, on CentOS (a media temple DV server) Locally it's fine (Django development server) Everything I've found on this issue says it's a mod_python issue and that changing to mod_wsgi will fix it, but I am running mod_wsgi. Can anyone help?
