• Windows 8 will not load color profiles - why?

  I have a Spyder3Express color calibration device. Under Windows 7 the utility that came with it would happily load the custom profile I created with it without any hassles. Under Windows 8 (have just upgraded) there is no visible color shift when it says it has loaded the profile. I have gone into the Windows color management settings and when I select any profile and hit 'Set as Default' nothing happens. They all look the same. So Windows doesn't throw an error, but none of the profiles cause any color shifts at all. I have tried a large number of things, such as changing the global color settings for all user accounts and installing other color management software to see if it will load the profiles. The only way I can get a color shift is if I create a profile using Windows built in utility. Profiles created this way change the appearance of the screen, but any downloaded or created profiles make no difference. I am out of ideas. Please help :)

• Help me select a "Simpler" target to create a new language: .NET, LLVM, Go, Own VM

  Lets define "Simple". This is my first language. I have no previous experience I will not dedicate +4 years to learn it properly. I'm a professional software [developer], but as an amateur in this area, I want instant gratification. If the idea shows a future, I could rewrite it. I don't want to do everything from scratch. In fact, if there exists a way to get GO (for example), change its syntax, add some sugar, give some extra functions and leave intact everything else, that would be perfect! From the example of coffescript/scala I think is better to build on top of some rich runtime like .NET/GO so I don't need to rewrite everything. HOWEVER, if is better other way, no problem for the first try! I want it in a week. I need it in a week so it will really take a month. Then it truly takes 3 months. But I don't want to put more that 3 months on this. I could reduce the scope of my language, but I hope the tools will help me a lot... I want to build a new language. Similar to python, but typed. I wonder what to build it on top of. I like the idea of building on top of GO. To get their sane (IMHO) OO paradigm (I plan to do the same, using interfaces, not inheritance), get goroutines and some other stuff. In my naive thinking I imagine that spit another language could help me to debug it more easily. However, look like everyone is building on top of something like .NET (don't like Java), LLVM or make it own VM. I read http://createyourproglang.com/ (great!) and the part of the VM look "easy" to me. So, what I need is the proper criteria and question I need to know in advance to have a fair shot at make this.

• Unable to drag and drop / select multiple with mouse

  I'm running into a perplexing issue with Windows 8 Pro x64, where randomly I'm unable to drag to select multiple files (i.e. in Explorer or Directory Opus). I've also noticed that a similar issue happens when I'm running for example Photoshop or Illustrator and can't drag to select multiple layers, or drag to do some other things in them. it happens randomly and have found no way to reliably reproduce it, but it happens VERY frequently. I have read some tips saying pressing the ESC button usually fixes the issue, but it doesn't in my case. From what I understand, it's probably due to some other process locking the drag feature somehow, but I've not found a way to tell which process is the perp; I've even tried using unlock software on files when I'm suddenly unable to drag and I'm told by it that nothing is locking it. Anyone have any ideas?

• Can't double click files to open them in inDesign (CS5)

  I cannot open a file unless I open inDesign (the program) and then do File-Open If I double click, it starts to open, then just hangs forever. AFTER I close it, and look in the directory where they're saved, I see a (temporary?) "lock" file. Now I can double click the original file and it opens just fine. However, now when I close iD it deletes the file and the whole process starts again... I have tried updating the software, uninstalled COMPLETELY and reinstalled, tried a brand new Win7 install. These files are all saved on a network drive, the computer is a new quad-core Dell with 12GB of RAM and a fresh x64 Win7 install on the SSD. Does not happen with other programs.

• Should I start MCPD training now or wait for new exams?

  i apologize if this question has been asked before, or if this is the wrong place to put it. I'm beginning my study track for the MCPD certification in Web Development. However, Microsoft plans to retire this certification on July 31st of 2013, along with two of the necessary tests to receive the certification. On MS's site, I can't find a newer certification path to take - I imagine that Microsoft will release new certification paths and new tests for their new software, but I don't know when that will happen. I don't really know anything about Microsoft's process, as this is the first Microsoft certification I'll be studying for. The bottom line is this - I don't want to lose six months waiting for a new test to appear that won't expire, but I don't want to rush to get a certification that will be invalid in six months (or have to reset any progress due to new study material). To those with experience in affairs like this - what is the best course to take, and can I maximize the time I have now (not wait for new testing material)? Is there any way to find material for the new tests that Microsoft will be rolling out? Thank you for your patience. • balancing loudest and quietest speaker noises

  It is hard for me to find the right volume for my computer to watch my dvd's on because it seems like most reasonable volumes become overwhelming at the loudest parts of a movie and it is hard to even make out the dialog at the quietest parts. I find I'm constantly adjusting the volume during the course of a movie. Are there ways to make the difference between the louds and the quiets not so extreme? (both computer related solutions and non-computer related solutions welcome). Like moving my speakers across the room and increasing the volume? or the opposite? Or would would the extremes be less noticeable if I used headphones? Are there movie players that might have more complex sound adjustment features? If there is a software solution out there for linux that would be great too. Thanks, Dan

• Installing nvidia drivers causes computer to boot to command prompt.

  Hi, I have an Asus u30jc laptop, which comes with the Optimus prime graphics card switching technology that is now supported under 2.6.35, so I decided to give it a try. First I made sure the discrete graphics card was activated and then I installed the drivers proposed by the ubuntu software repository (nvidia-current). However, after rebooting all I got was a command prompt. My graphics card is a nvidia 310M. This is on Ubuntu 10.10 64 bits. What can I do to diagnose/identify the source of this problem? UPDATE: The messsages in my syslog tell me to check the xorg log: Oct 11 12:42:59 u30jc-test gdm-binary[1095]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.053144 seconds Oct 11 12:42:59 u30jc-test gdm-simple-slave[1450]: WARNING: Unable to load file '/etc/gdm/custom.conf': No such file or directory Oct 11 12:42:59 u30jc-test gdm-binary[1095]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.038176 seconds Oct 11 12:42:59 u30jc-test gdm-binary[1095]: WARNING: GdmLocalDisplayFactory: maximum number of X display failures reached: check X server log for errors Which I did. • How to stop mouse "pausing".

  My Microsoft mouse recently stopped working, so I purchased an AOpen O-35G, plug and play. No software came with it and I was advised to "just plug it in". I did this, and it worked, although some of the more advanced features do not work. My problem is that now the mouse cursor hesitates occasionally, and then over shoots the target I selected. This never happened before. It seems to happen when I am using the mouse and a browser window reloads. Does anyone know how to change this? It is very annoying. XP Pro SP3 Thanks. EDIT: It is not a problem of dust or a hair. I have contacted the Manufacturere and they are not responding. I have the mouse attached to my computer via a powered USB hub. I am going to try plugging it in directly to see if that makes a difference.

• How do I install iTunes?

  I have an iPhone and run Ubuntu on all of my personal computers. Since I did not want to keep a separate partition with Windows on it for the sole purpose of running iTunes, I attempted to install It using Wine. I installed Wine 1.4 from the Software Center and installed iTunes 10.6.3. When I tried to run it I got a slew of error messages. I hopped over to google where it was suggested that I install it through PlayOnLinux. I did so with the same result. Further googling revealed that iTunes 10.6.x is confirmed to work with Wine 1.5.1 and up. I installed Wine 1.5.1 following the instructions I found and was unable to get it to open. I did the same with 1.5.9 with the same results. I opened the Package Manager and installed the Wine 1.5.9 packages through it, and it appears to have installed properly. When trying to install iTunes I got he error "This iTunes installer requires Windows Vista 64 bit or later". Realizing that Wine uses XP as a default I ran winecfg and changed it to Windows 7. This changed nothing and I tried changing it through winetricks to no avail. I even changed it to Vista with the same results. Does anyone know what is going wrong here and how to fix it? Thanks

• SOA Starting Point: Methods for Service Identification and Definition

  As more and more companies start to incorporate a Service Oriented Architectural design approach into their existing enterprise systems, it creates the need for a standardized integration technology. One common technology used by companies is an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB). An ESB, as defined by Progress Software, connects and mediates all communications and interactions between services. In essence an ESB is a form of middleware that allows services to communicate with one another regardless of framework, environment, or location. With the emergence of ESB, a new emphasis is now being placed on approaches that can be used to determine what Web services should be built. In addition, what order should these services be built? In May 2011, SOA Magazine published an article that identified 10 common methods for identifying and defining services. SOA’s Ten Common Methods for Service Identification and Definition: Business Process Decomposition Business Functions Business Entity Objects Ownership and Responsibility Goal-Driven Component-Based Existing Supply (Bottom-Up) Front-Office Application Usage Analysis Infrastructure Non-Functional Requirements  Each of these methods provides various pros and cons in regards to their use within the design process. I personally feel that during a design process, multiple methodologies should be used in order to accurately define a design for a system or enterprise system. Personally, I like to create a custom cocktail derived from combining these methodologies in order to ensure that my design fits with the project’s and business’s needs while still following development standards and guidelines. • Code &amp; Slides &ndash; SDE &ndash; What&rsquo;s new in Silverlight 4

  Last Tuesday the Software Developers Network – SDN organized another SDE. I’ve had the opportunity to present a session about Silverlight 4. I talked about lots of new features in Silverlight 4 and Expression Blend 4, focused on the Out-Of-Browser features.     The slides of my presentation can be downloaded here.   In my presentation I demonstrated a couple of features from my new pet project “SilverAmp”. This project is based on the legendary WinAmp, but made entirely in Silverlight. I use it to try out many new Silverlight 4 features. It’s not finished yet, but useful already. It runs outside the browser with elevated trust. It reads your local MyMusic folder and uses the TagLib library to read the ID3 tags of the mp3s it finds. SilverAmp is using MEF for extensibility. It uses a custom Window Chrome, designed in Expression Design. And it shows a notification window when a new song starts to play.   In the future it is going to get song information from Last.FM, will be able to show YouTube videos inside itself and it will tweet about what you are playing. • PDAnet on Android IP on PC is not public IP. Where does the NAT take place, PDAnet or Verizon?

  When using PDAnet on a PC (Win7 ultimate) to USB tether a Motorola Droid on Verizon 3G the IP address of the PC appears to be public - 64.245.171.115 (64-245-171-115.pools.spcsdns.net) - but connections show as coming from another public IP - 97.14.69.212 (212-sub-97.14.69.myvzw.com). Someone is performing Network Address Translation - either PDAnet or within the Verizon 3G network. Can someone tell me who is doing the NAT? Is it PDAnet or is it at Verizon? Is there any possibility of setting up port forwarding, such that connections to the public IP 97.14.69.212 (212-sub-97.14.69.myvzw.com) are forward to the PC? We are testing a network protocol that requires either a true public IP or forwarding a range of ports from the public Internet to the system on which the software runs (actually Linux hosted by VMware Player or Workstation on a PC running Windows).

• How can I take browser screenshots at a higher resolution than my browser supports?

  I need to take a screenshot of a website as it would appear on a very high resolution monitor... say 4000x3000 pixels. My laptop's screen has a native resolution of 1400x768. Basically, I need to simulate having a monitor resolution much higher than my monitor and video card actually supports. I want the screenshot of the site to look pretty much how it does when you hit CTRL MINUS (zoom out) in Firefox repeatedly, but without any loss of pixels due to scaling. How can I do this? Is there some way to use virtual machine software to simulate a super-high-res display? If not, is there some way to open a browser window bigger than the screen, and then capture its contents as a PNG somehow? Anything else that might work?

• Live chat solutions

  What good live chat/live help solutions are available (preferably for use on a site hosted on a LAMP stack and free)? I'm looking for a way to allow our sales and customer service reps to talk directly with visitors to our site. I've looked at phpopenchat, but it looks very unpolished. The only other free live chat app I've come across looked egregious. The aesthetics and UI design alone made me shudder to think what the underlying code might look like. This isn't a critical feature, and it wouldn't be hard to code up myself, so I'm not really looking for commercial software or paid services (unless there's a really compelling reason to use them). I'm just wondering if any other webmasters have come across a satisfactory free/open source solution for providing live customer support on their website. As a side note, live voice chat would also be an option, but it has to be be designed (or customizable) for customer support rather than a public chatroom. Edit: Looking at the responses, it looks like there probably aren't going to be many free solutions for this type of business-oriented chat solution, so feel free to post answers even if they are commercial solutions as long as they're a good value. Also feel free to post any alternate live support solutions (such as the Skype recommendation) that could be in someway integrated with a website. This will give me a good lay of the land for what people are actually using for live support, and I think will be more helpful to others reading this question.

• Maximum disk size for a Debian 6 VMware installation?

  I'm planning to install a variety of Linux distributions on VMware Player to get more experience with Linux (I've only used Fedora back in university). I'm starting with Debian 6.0.5 Squeeze, and have already downloaded the small CD i386 netinst image. In the new virtual machine wizard, it's asking me for the maximum disk size of the image. It says that the recommended size for Debian 6 is 8 GB. However, I'm trying to figure out what is the absolute minimal size that I can get away with, since I'm only testing it out with very few software installations (mainly testing web server applications).

  Sucking Less Every Year -Jeff Atwood I had come across this insightful article.Quoting directly from the post I've often thought that sucking less every year is how humble programmers improve. You should be unhappy with code you wrote a year ago. If you aren't, that means either A) you haven't learned anything in a year, B) your code can't be improved, or C) you never revisit old code. All of these are the kiss of death for software developers. How often does this happen or not happen to you? How long before you see an actual improvement in your coding ? month, year? Do you ever revisit Your old code? How often does your old code plague you? or how often do you have to deal with your technical debt. It is definitely very painful to fix old bugs n dirty code that we may have done to quickly meet a deadline and those quick fixes ,some cases we may have to rewrite most of the application/code. No arguments about that. Some of the developers i had come across argued that they were already at the evolved stage where their coding doesn't need improvement or cant get improved anymore.   I need a good multi monitor tool mainly to gain control over the windows positioning. I have problem that closed window/application remembers at which monitors it was (closed). I have disconnect this monitor (this is often LCD TV) I have problem with this "remembering" windows/applications that was closed in LCD TV are out of sight when LCD TV is disconnected. What is the best practice to deal with this problem other that that not to close windows on this monitor)? Are there any good multi-monitor software to deal with this?

• Advancing my Embedded knowledge.....with a CS degree.

  So I graduated last December with a B.S. in Computer Science, in a pretty good well known engineering college. However towards the end I realized that I actually like Assembly/Lower level C programming more than I actually enjoy higher level abstracted OO stuff. (Like I Programmed my own Device Drivers for USB stuff in Linux, stuff like that) But.....I mean we really didn't concentrate much on that in college, perhaps an EE/CE degree would've been better, but I knew the classes......and things weren't THAT much different. I've messed around with Atmel AVR's/Arduino stuff (Mostly robotics) and Linux Kernals/Device Drivers. but I really want to enhance my skills and maybe one day get a job doing embedded stuff. (I have a job now, it's An entry level software dev/tester job, it's a good job but not exactly what my passion lies in) (Im pretty good with C and certain ASM's for specific microcontrollers) Is this even possible with a CS degree? or am I screwed? (since technically my degree usually doesn't involve much embedded stuff) If Im NOT screwed then what should I be studying/learning? How would I even go about it........ I guess I could eventually say "Experienced with XXXX Microcontrollers/ASM/etc...." but still, it wouldn't be the same as having a CE/EE degree. Also....going back to college isn't an option. just fyi. edit: Any book recommendations for "getting used to this stuff" I have ARM System-on-Chip Architecture (2nd edition) it's good.....for ARM stuff lol

• System Monitoring Redundancy

  I consult in a small business environment where I have two HyperV hosts (with <10 VMs) + a couple other servers. I recently had an issue where one of the HyperV hosts had a CPU issue and it came down, bringing most of my non-critical VMs with it, plus a free piece of software that I use for network & system monitoring and availability. Because of this, and the fact that iDRAC locked up to, I did not get any alerts about the crash. So I am wondering how I can (cheaply) get a redundant availability monitoring system in place--Is is as simple as running Nagios or Zenoss (or whatever) on two different HyperV hosts? It just seems like running more than one copy of Nagios/Zenoss/etc could be expensive and have high overhead. Thoughts? Thanks! -Josh

• connect to ssh server thru 80 via HTTP proxy?

  Hi, Please help: I want to connect to my ssh server at home However, I'm behind a corporate (CORP) firewall, which blocks almost all ports (443, 22, 23 etc). But it seems that 80 is not blocked, coz I am able to surf the web after I login (i.e. IE sets to CORP's proxy server, and start IE - displayed CORP intranet portal - type in google.com - dialog pops up for userid + pwd - login successful, and surf without restrictions) My ssh server listens at 443. My question is: Is there a way to connect from a computer behind the CORP firewall to the ssh server thru the 80 port, with the ssh server still listening on port 443? Changing the ssh server to listen to port 80 is not an option, coz my home ISP blocks 80. Can I use a public proxy which listens at 80? After some research on google I found that there is something called "connect to SSH thru an HTTP proxy" using the Cockscrew software. Is it useful? Or is there some other way to solve the problem?
