• How to calculate time spent for Linux system administration?

  I would love figuring out how much time I actually have spent in shell performing administrative duties. For billing of course, this information is not sufficient, but it would be helpful to figure out how much time I have actually spent in shell. My question is: How anyone got tips on how to calculate time spent in shell (in hours + minutes), let's say per user account? Could anyone recommend a software that could be used to analyze this time? Optionally I would like to know about ways how to categorise time spent (e.g. 1 hour for Apache, 2 hours for Samba, etc.) Also, your takes on how you monitor your admin time, are also much appreciated! To narrow down the problem, I am specifically interested in ways of tracking time spent in shell for Linux system administration

• Brother MFC-J470DW scan function "Check Connection"

  I have a Brother MFC-J470DW printer that I have connected to a Linux desktop (running Ubuntu 14.04) using a wireless router network. The printer works fine for printing and copying, but now I want to add the scan function. To set up the scan function, I went to the Brother web page for this printer: http://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadlist.aspx?c=eu_ot&lang=en&prod=mfcj470dw_us_eu_as&os=128 and under Scanner Drivers selected "Scanner driver 64bit (deb package)", "Scan-key-tool 64bit (deb package)", and "Scanner Setting file (deb package)". For each package, I clicked the EULA, and selected "open with Ubuntu Software Center". Then after the USC window pops up, I click on Install and the red line goes from left to right. In each case, the USC window then had a green checkmark and the Install box changes to Reinstall (that's how you know it worked). So now I try it out. Hitting the Scan button on the printer, selecting "Scan to file", and hitting ok produces the message "Check Connection". I checked the Brother Linux Information FAQ (scanner) page and the 14th question seems the same as mine: When I try to use the scan key on my network connected machine, I receive the error "Check connection" or I can not select anything except "scan to FTP". I explored the solution given for this FAQ, but found from ifconfig that I am already using eth0, the default setting, so presumably that is not the problem. I also found brscan-skey installed in /usr/bin and did drrm@drrmlinux2:~$ brscan-skey -t drrm@drrmlinux2:~$ brscan-skey but that didn't help - I still get the "Check connection" message. What can you suggest to fix this problem?

• Bacula vs. BackupPC [closed]

  I have been googling about the differences between them. Bacula has lots of roles BackupPC is easier to configure Bacula works with agent, not rsync (great for Windows backups) It seems that Bacula is most often compared to Amanda though, while BackupPC seems a perfectly lovely and popular backup distribution to. I currently backup my servers with rsnapshot, but I am looking for a professional scalable solution that could also back-up 50 hosts without problems. Preferably a solution that can offer bare metal restores for my Linux servers. I am not looking to reinstall the exact same version of Plesk, the software, etc... Update: I see this ranks high in Google, I found a good article: http://www.serverfocus.org/backuppc-vs-bacula-vs-amanda. I personally think that BackupPC is good for smaller environment, but Bacula, despite the high learning curve, is better for environments that requilre scaling.

• LUNS access issue in ESX4 Cluster server

  HI, I've created volumes in equallogic in PS 6000 XV(having 2 member which is in 1 pool), checked & those volumes can be easily detected my ISCSI software in windows. But the problem with ESX , not able to see the assigned disk on ESX server, I can explain what I've done: 1.Created Cluster with enabled HA & DRS 2.Added 3 ESX4 HOST 3.Added VMkernel & configured in all 3 ESX4, enabled vmotion & FT on the same adapter. 4.went to iSCSI storage adapter properties, enabled iSCSI 5.Trying to discover the available storage with the controller IP on dynamic discovery, but not able to see the assigned storage Note: the same volume is accessed to windows that means there is no issue from storage , am I right ????   Background Using LaTeX to write a book. When a user purchases the book, the PDF will be generated automatically. Problem The PDF should have a watermark that includes the person's name and contact information. Question What software meets the following criteria: Applies encrypted, invisible watermarks to a PDF Open Source Platform independent (Linux, Windows) Fast (marks a 200 page PDF in under 1 second) Batch processing (exclusively command-line driven) Collusion-attack resistant Non-fragile (e.g., PDF - EPS - PDF still contains the watermark) Well documented (shows example usages) Ideas & Resources Some thoughts and findings: Natural language processing (NLP) watermarks. Apply steganography on a randomly selected image. http://openstego.sourceforge.net/cmdline.html The problem with NLP is that grammatical errors can be introduced. The problem with steganography is that the images are sourced from an image cache, and so recreating that cache with watermarked images will impart a delay when generating the PDF (I could just delete one image from the cache, but that's not an elegant solution). The first one has the most momentum, the second one comes by default with RH subscriptions and the last one is very expensive and has a very good reputation ;-) For storage: - You can replicate LUN's using software raid / md device - You can use the network using DRBD replication, which offers a bit more flexibility - You can use Veritas Storage Foundation technology to talk to your SANs replication technology.   I had a developer that is no longer with us create an msi to do this for me, but the package is outdated now and we need to deploy new files. Basically I need to do the following: Take the code at the bottom of this question and deploy it to all users as a software install package in Group Policy. I don't want to use a computer startup script because I don't want this to run at every login...just once to install and be done. • A simple Volume Replication Tool for large data set?

  I'm looking for a solution to the following: Server A (Site A) - Win 2008 R2 - approx 10TB (15TB max) of data - well over 8 million files Server B (Site B) - Win 2008 R2 I want to assynchronously replicate Server A's volume to a volume on Server B for data redundancy. Something that I can say to my users, "go here for data" when/if Server A goes belly up due to machine problems, disaster, etc. Windows 2008 R2 does have DFS, but microsoft does not apparently support this large of a dataset (or more accurately, more than 8 million files - according to the docs I could find). I also looked at Veritas Volume Replication, but this seems almost too much as I would also require Veritas Volume Manager. There are numerous "back-up" software which makes a 1-1 backup, which would be ok, but since it will be transfering over internet, I'd like something that has compression during transfer like DFS has. Does anyone have any suggestions regarding this?

• Is it possible to choose the Amazon Glacier Vault when backing up from Synology NAS?

  I am using Amazon Glacier Backup on a Synology NAS (rackstation). But the Synology backup software for glacier does not allow me to choose the vault to backup to. This means I can not give my own name to the vault, but also I can not backup to a previously created vault (I also have this problem now after replacing a Synology rackstation). Is there any way to choose to which vault you want your Synology to backup to? Edit: I have now posted this question to the Synology forum also: http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=174&t=86557&e=0 If I can solve the problem I'll post the solutions here also.

• What is the ideal length of a method?

  In object-oriented programming, there is no exact rule on the maximum length of a method , but I still found these two qutes somewhat contradicting each other, so I would like to hear what you think. In Clean Code: A Handbook of Agile Software Craftsmanship, Robert Martin says: The first rule of functions is that they should be small. The second rule of functions is that they should be smaller than that. Functions should not be 100 lines long. Functions should hardly ever be 20 lines long. and he gives an example from Java code he sees from Kent Beck: Every function in his program was just two, or three, or four lines long. Each was transparently obvious. Each told a story. And each led you to the next in a compelling order. That’s how short your functions should be! This sounds great, but on the other hand, in Code Complete, Steve McConnell says something very different: The routine should be allowed to grow organically up to 100-200 lines, decades of evidence say that routines of such length no more error prone then shorter routines. And he gives a reference to a study that says routines 65 lines or long are cheaper to develop. So while there are diverging opinions about the matter, is there a functional best-practice towards determining the ideal length of a method for you?

• Put a Windows computer to sleep remotely (from a Linux box)

  I'd like to have my Linux box (a QNAP TS-210 NAS) send the order to go to sleep (or hibernation) to my main Windows 7 computer. As the NAS is running Linux, I can't use psshutdown from SysInternals' PsTools. Is there any Linux equivalent? Or some "magic packet" that can order the Win7 computer to sleep. I know I could install a SSH daemon and trigger a shutdown command from the Linux box using ssh, but ideally I do not want to install anything on the Win7 computer. I can install Linux software on the NAS, no problem about this. PHP, python and perl are also available on it.

  Let me explain my situation. I'm planning a kind of test case runner for doing testcases on external devices, which are microcontroller based. For example: Testcase 1 Testcase 2 The main reason that all the testcases can be run with any device is, that the testcases validates some standard and this software should be extensible for future devices. The testcases itself must be runnable with changing parameters. For example Testcase 1 does some Timing Verification the testcase needs as input parameter the datarate: 4800, 9600, 19200. Now hoping you understand the situation, let me explain my design questions. For implementing the test cases I thought about an Attribute based approach, like nunit does it. The more complicated problem is, how to define the parametrized testcases? Like this: Device 1: Testcase 1: datarate: 4800, 9600, 19200 Testcase 2: supply: 1, 2, 3 Device 2: Testcase 1: datarate: 9600, 19200, 38400 Testcase 2: supply: 3, 4, 5 How would you design such a framework? I've done a similar desin in python where I had for every device a XML containing the testcase definitions like: <Testcase="Testcase 1" datarate=4800/> <Testcase="Testcase 1" datarate=9600/> <Testcase="Testcase 1" datarate=19200/>

• Create netbook recovery image without DVD burner (virtual burner?)

  I have a new Acer Aspire One which is asking to create a recovery DVD. It doesn't have a built in burner, and I don't have a USB burner. However I do have a large USB hard drive. Is there some way to get the recovery software to "burn" an image file instead of a real DVD? I know you can download a Linux recovery image, but the netbook comes with XP. I plan to install Linux on it but I'd like an XP recovery image just in case.

  In wordpress.com-hosted blogs syntax highlighting is working, but on a newly privately installed WordPress blog it is not. So I assume there is a plugin for this. I tried wp-syntax and bbcode plugins - no success. • How to check that image sizes are ok or not

  I am having many image files in one folder. Mostly there are jpg, but some png, bmp, gif, tif also (but jpg is most important if others are not possible). There are also many xml files in same folder with same names as image files are having. So there is something like this: 1.jpg, 1.xml, a.png, a.xml, 3g.bmp, 3g.xml... All xml files are having only 1 line: <IMGRES WIDTH="1234" HEIGHT="567" /> (of course numbers are not same). I am looking for some easy way to check all image sizes and confirm if they are same as in xml or not. So I want output like: imagename, xmlwidth x xmlheight, realwidth x realheight, match/error Is this possible in only Windows with no other software installed?

• Automatically delete old files from a specified folder?

  I want to set up an automatic task that will automatically delete files older than X days from a specific folder. I'd prefer to do it without having to install any 3rd party software, but I'll be ok if it's a very small and simple utility. I want this to force me to keep my files organized. I am setting my browser to download to a standard folder, and then with this script to automatically delete files older than a week, I will be forced to move & organize downloaded files I want to keep.
