• Force apt to remove all emacs*

I did some google-searching, found some stuff on Launchpad suggesting: sudo apt-get install --reinstall --purge emacsen-common But this is the same... so I hope there a way to tell app to just remove everything releated to emacs, and to start from scratch again? • juju bootstrap key error?

  I followed the guides the best as i could. there is some information missing like do as root or as regular user ..formatting, quotes no quotes..what the password or paraphrase for ssh should be ..couple other trivial things. that im sure add up to where im at (stuck!) so i have a working mass server on mx-nas-01 and 3 nodes and have been trying to get juju to start. • Can't install software by terminal

• Is it OK to use dynamic typing to reduce the amount of variables in scope?

  Often, when I am initializing something I have to use a temporary variable, for example: file_str = "path/to/file" file_file = open(file) or regexp_parts = ['foo', 'bar'] regexp = new RegExp( regexp_parts.join('|') ) However, I like to reduce the scope my variables to the smallest scope possible so there is less places where they can be (mis-)used. For example, I try to use for(var i ...) in C++ so the loop variable is confined to the loop body. In these initialization cases, if I am using a dynamic language, I am then often tempted to reuse the same variable in order to prevent the initial (and now useless) value from being used latter in the function. file = "path/to/file" file = open(file) regexp = ['...', '...'] regexp = new RegExp( regexp.join('|') ) The idea is that by reducing the number of variables in scope I reduce the chances to misuse them. However this sometimes makes the variable names look a little weird, as in the first example, where "file" refers to a "filename". I think perhaps this would be a non issue if I could use non-nested scopes begin scope1 filename = ... begin scope2 file = open(filename) end scope1 //use file here //can't use filename on accident end scope2 but I can't think of any programming language that supports this. What rules of thumb should I use in this situation? When is it best to reuse the variable? When is it best to create an extra variable? What other ways do we solve this scope problem?

• Enforcing Constraints Upon Data Documents of Various Formats

  This seems like the sort of problem that must have been solved elegantly long ago, but I haven't the foggiest how to google it and find it. Suppose you're maintaining a large legacy system, which has a large collection of data (tens of GB) of various formats, including XML and two different internal configuration formats. Suppose further that there are abstract rules governing the values these files may or may not contain. EXAMPLE: File A defines the raw, mathematical data pertaining to the aerodynamics of a car for consumption of the physics component of the system. File B contains certain values from File A in an easily accessible, XML hierarchy for consumption of a different component of the system. There exists, therefore, an abstract rule (or constraint) such that the values from File B must match the values from File A. This is probably the simplest constraint that can be specified, but in practice, the constraints between files can become very complicated indeed. What is the best method for managing these constraints between files of arbitrary formats, short of migrating it over to an RDBMS (which simply isn't feasible for the foreseeable future)? Has this problem been solved already? • failbit is being set and I can't figure out why

  I'm writing a MIDI file loader. Everything is going fine until at some track I get a failbit exception while trying to read from file. I can't figure out why, I've checked the file size and it's ok too. Upon checking "errno" and it returns "0". Any ideas? Thanks.   I have to have multiple classes for this program. The problem is, I don't fully understand arrays and how they work, so I'm a little lost. • How do I detect a file write error in C?

  I have an embedded environment where a user might insert or remove a USB flash drive. I would like to know if the drive has been removed, or if there is some other problem when I try to write to the drive. However, Linux just saves the information in its buffers and returns with no indicated error. The computer I'm using comes with a 2.4.26 kernel and libc 2.3.2. I believe the same thing would happen if I simply removed the USB drive (without unmounting it). I have also fiddled with devfs. I figured out how to get it to automatically mount the drive, (with the REGISTER event) but it never seems to trigger the UNREGISTER when I pull out the memory. How can I determine in my program whether I have successfully created a file? Update 4 July: It was a silly oversight of me not to check the result from close(). Unfortunately, the file can be closed without error. So that didn't help. What about fsync()? That sounds like a good idea, but that didn't catch the error either. There might be some interesting information in /sys if I had such a thing. I believe that didn't get added until 2.6.?. The comment(s) about the quality of my flash drive are probably justified. It's one of the earlier ones. In fact, write protect switches seem to be extremely rare these days. I think I have to use the overkill option: Create a file, unmount & remount the drive, and check to see if the file is there. If that doesn't solve my problem, then something is really messed up! Note to myself: Make sure the file you try to create isn't already there! By the way, this does happen to be a C++ program. You can tell by the .c_str() which I had intended to edit out for simplicity.

My target is to create soap services in python that can be consumed by several clients (java, etc). I tried the HelloWorld example from soaplib (http://trac.optio.webfactional.com/wiki/HelloWorld).   Hi, Presently I am working on an application which sends and receives file from remote server. To do network operation I am using QNetworkAccessManager. To upload a file I am using QNetworkAccessManager::put() and to download I am using QNetworkAccessManager::get() functions. While uploading a file I will initialize a timer with time out of 15 sec. if I upload a small file it will complete it within the time out period. But if I try to upload a file which is very large in size get time out. So how to decide time out for uploading of large file. Same in case of downloading of a large file. I get file in chunk by chunk in readyread() signal. Here also if I download a large file I get time out. So how to decide time out for uploading of large file.

• Can I read an Outlook (2003/2007) PST file in C#?

  Is it possible to read a .PST file using C#? I would like to do this as a standalone application, not as an Outlook addin (if that is possible). If have seen other SO questions similar to this mention MailNavigator but I am looking to do this programmatically in C#. I have looked at the Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook namespace but that appears to be just for Outlook addins. LibPST appears to be able to read PST files, but this is in C (sorry Joel, I didn't learn C before graduating). Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks! EDIT: Thank you all for the responses! • uninstall google chrome in fedora

  Yesterday I installed Fedora 15 Beta with GNOME 3 - it works well. One problem though is that I installed Chrome 32-bit (which was wrong, should have been the 64-bit version) and now I can't uninstall it. I can't find it in Add/Remove Software, and I also can't install the correct version of Chrome because it complains about my other copy of Chrome. Any ideas how I can remove the existing copy and get the 64-bit version installed?   I want to upload some files of size 35MB on to the blob container. I have coded for splitting the data into blocks and upload it on to the blob container and form a blob using PUT. I tested the code for some files of Size 2MB or something... It worked well. But When I tried it for a large MB file, its giving me this error Server Error 404 - File or directory not found. • Hack Extension Files to Make Them Version-Compatible for Firefox

  A well known drawback in using Firefox is the problem with extension compatibility when a new major version is released. Whether it is for a new extension that you are trying for the first time or an old favorite we have a way to get those extensions working for you again. There are multiple reasons why you might want to choose this method to fix a non-compatible extension: You are uncomfortable with tweaking the “about:config” settings You prefer to maintain the original “about:config” settings in a pristine state and like having compatibility checking active You are looking to gain some “geek cred” Keep in mind that most extensions will work perfectly well with a new version of Firefox and simply have the “version compatibility number” problem. But once in a while there may be one that needs to have some work done on it by the extension’s author. The Problem Here is a perfect example of everyone’s least favorite “extension message”. This is the last thing that you need when all that you want is for your favorite extension (or a new one) to work on a fresh clean install. Note: This works nicely to “replace” non-compatible extensions already present in your browser if you are simply upgrading. Hacking the XPI File For this procedure you will need to manually download the extension to your hard-drive (right click on the extension’s “Install Button” and select “Save As”). Once you have done that you are ready to start hacking the extension. For our example we chose the “GCal Popup Extension”. The best thing to do is place the extension in a new folder (i.e. the Desktop or other convenient location) then unzip it just the same way that you would with any regular zip file. Once it is unzipped you will see the various folders and files that were in the “xpi file” (we had four files here but depending on the extension the number may vary). There is only one file that you need to focus on…the “install.rdf” file. Note: At this point you should move the original extension file to a different location (i.e. outside of the folder) so that it is no longer present. Open the file in “Notepad” so that you can change the number for the “maxVersion”. Here the number is listed as “3.5.*” but we needed to make it higher… Replacing the “5” with a “7” is all that we needed to do. Once you have entered your new “maxVersion” number save the file. At this point you will need to re-zip all of the files back into a single file. Make certain that you “create” a file with the “.zip file extension” otherwise this will not work. Once you have the new zip file created you will need to rename the entire file including the “file extension”. For our example we copied and pasted the original extension name. Once you have changed the name click outside of the “text area”. You will see a small message window like this asking for confirmation…click “Yes” to finish the process. Now your modified/updated extension is ready to install. Drag the extension into your browser to install it and watch that wonderful “Restart to complete the installation.” message appear. As soon as your browser starts you can check the “Add-ons Manager Window” and see the version compatibility numbers for the extension. Looking very very nice! And just like that your extension should be up and running without any problems. Conclusion If you are looking to try something new, gain some geek cred, or just want to keep your Firefox install as close to the original condition as possible this method should get those extensions working nicely for you again. I went through some headache also when we were trying to figure out how to make it work with lighttpd. this is the line that helps make it work in lighttpd. url.rewrite-once = ( ".*\?(.*)$" => "/index.php?$1", "^/js/.*$" => "$0", "^.*\.(js|ico|gif|jpg|png|css|swf |jar|class)$" => "$0", "" => "/index.php" ) but I couldn't figure out how to make it works in NginX. The webserver run just fine when we use the phpinfo.php test file. However as soon as I point it to my apps, nothing comes up. Check the error.log file and there's no error. Very mind boggling. I spent over 1 week trying to figure it out with no luck.. Please help?

• Azure storage: Uploaded files with size zero bytes

  When I upload an image file to a blob, the image is uploaded apparently successfully (no errors). When I go to cloud storage studio, the file is there, but with a size of 0 (zero) bytes. And no exceptions are thrown). And the really strange thing is that this works perfectly in other cases (uploading Power Points or even other images from the Worker role). The code that calls the SetContent method seems to be exactly the same and file seems to be correct since a new file with zero bytes is created at the correct location. Does any one have any suggestion please? I debugged this code dozens of times and I cannot see the problem. Any suggestions are welcome! Thanks

• How can I read individual lines of a CSV file into a string array, to then be selectively displayed

  I need your help, guys! :| I've got myself a CSV file with the following contents: 1,The Compact,1.8GHz,1024MB,160GB,440 2,The Medium,2.4GHz,1024MB,180GB,500 3,The Workhorse,2.4GHz,2048MB,220GB,650 It's a list of computer systems, basically, that the user can purchase. I need to read this file, line-by-line, into an array. Let's call this array csvline(). The first line of the text file would stored in csvline(0). Line two would be stored in csvline(1). And so on. (I've started with zero because that's where VB starts its arrays). A drop-down list would then enable the user to select 1, 2 or 3 (or however many lines/systems are stored in the file). Upon selecting a number - say, 1 - csvline(0) would be displayed inside a textbox (textbox1, let's say). If 2 was selected, csvline(1) would be displayed, and so on. It's not the formatting I need help with, though; that's the easy part. I just need someone to help teach me how to read a CSV file line-by-line, putting each line into a string array - csvlines(count) - then increment count by one so that the next line is read into another slot. If I try to do this using csvalue = csvtranslator.ReadLine , I get the following error message: "Error 1 Value of type 'String' cannot be converted to '1-dimensional array of String'." If I then put it as an array, ie: csvalue() = csvtranslator.ReadLine , I then get a different error message: "Error 1 Number of indices is less than the number of dimensions of the indexed array." What's the knack, guys? I've spent hours trying to figure this out. Please go easy on me - and keep any responses ultra-simple for my newbie brain - I'm very new to all this programming malarkey and just starting out! :)
