  • How to disable mouseover popup icons on launcher?

    If an application is open and its icon is contained in the launcher panel, moving the mouse over the launcher icon will cause a very annoying popup icon to appear, showing a small image of the open application. It is annoying because it lingers too long and covers other information. For example, it covers the menus that appear when I right-click on a launcher panel icon. How do I disable these mouseover popups? I don't necessarily want to disable the "text" mouseover popup, I only want to disable the image popups. Thanks. Ubuntu 12.04, new install.

  • How can i modify my Grub 1.99 configurations to install a new kernel?

    I have configured kernel 3.2.x and made some changes in the kernel. I have compiled it and have the compiled image of the kernel with me. The problem i am facing is as in how to modify the boot loader Grub 1.99 in my case, so that i can boot through the new kernel i have compiled. I looked on net for any tutorials but all of them talked about older versions of Grub ? Can someone please give some info or point me towards some resource ? Currently i have compiled my new custom kernel image and have copied it to /boot.

  • What did I do wrong when installed this theme?

    I have a problem installing a theme for my Ubuntu, note that I am very new to it and probably messed something up. Still it seems to me that I did everything like it was stated in the INSTALL file. Theme: http://opendesktop.org/content/show.php/?content=140562 So I downloaded the *.zip package, unzipped it in home/.themes folder and changed Controls and Borders inside my theme preference. Still my result is pretty poor. You can look at the image, it looks nothing like what in the screenshot of the author. I also installed fonts running sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer and tried to install GTK2 engine as sudo apt-get install gtk2-engines-murrine gtk2-engines-pixbuf, but it showed that 0 files was modified since I already have it.   • Where do I find display brightness controls in Lubuntu?

    I'm looking for a control to be able to change my standard display brightness in Lubuntu. I've tried How do I set default display brightness? but my system settings does not include a Screen option. I've also tried Power Manager, Monitor Settings and Screensaver under Preferences and couldn't spot anything to control this option. The function key mappings (this is a laptop) work to change the brightness, but I'm looking for a UI option as the laptop is physically set up to be mouse-based (keyboard is hard to access with how we've got it set up).

  • Best practices on separating Update and Draw on game loop

    I've been working on my first HTML5 prototype and I found a good model that uses the regular Update and Draw loop we see in game dev. My question is, where does one end and the other begins? The question popped when I wanted to rotate and draw an Image, and I kept wondering if the work of changing the tranformation matrix (that I presume would be a bit expensive since it works on the whole pixel array of an image) and calculating the right position do draw it would characterize drawing work, or maybe not, since after that I may need to check for collision or something similar. Thinkig of it, seems like a silly question, but I would like some advice from more experienced developers. Where does does update ends and draw starts? Thanks in advance.

  • Animating isometric sprites

    I'm having trouble coming up with a way to animate these 2D isometric sprites. The sprites are stored like this: < Game Folder Root /Assets/Sprites/< Sprite Name /< Sprite Animation /< Sprite Direction /< Frame Number .png So for example, /Assets/Sprites/Worker/Stand/North-East/01.png Sprite sheets aren't really viable for this type of animation. The example stand animation is 61 frames. 61 frames for all 8 directions alone is huge, but there's more then just a standing animation for each sprite. Creating an sf::Texture for every image and every frame seems like it will take up a lot of memory and be hard to keep track of that many images. Unloading the image and loading the next one every single frame seems like it will do a lot of unnecessary work. What's the best way to handle this?

    I'm building a standard infographic where you mouse over a region and the image changes as you move. For instance, imagine a map of the world, and when you mouse over a country, that country glows and a panel shows statistics about that country. The implementation is to have a separate image for the glowing country, and a div element with the statistics, and the code shows these additional elements on a hover over the country. The question is: what should this do on a tablet, where there's no hover event? What's a good alternative navigation metaphor for this kind of situation on touch-only devices?

  • Kernel Panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0) after apt-get upgrade

    I'm using Ubuntu 9.1 server edition, I get this error during boot time after I ran sudo apt-get upgrade when checking my kernel version, uname -r returns 2.6.31-14-generic but when i run dpkg -l 'linux-image*' | grep ^.i I cannot find 2.6.31-14 (only contains 2.6.32*) Following the solution in the thread: Kernel Panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0) doesn't work for me I'm running the commands inside the Rescue mode by booting from the Ubuntu 9.1 Installation Disc Do I need to update my kernel and run update-initramfs + update-grub again? If so, how can I update the kernel? apt-get install any linux-headers/image cannot change the uname -r value Thanks!

  • Collaborative Whiteboard using WebSocket in GlassFish 4 - Text/JSON and Binary/ArrayBuffer Data Transfer (TOTD #189)

    This blog has published a few blogs on using JSR 356 Reference Implementation (Tyrus) as its integrated in GlassFish 4 promoted builds. TOTD #183: Getting Started with WebSocket in GlassFish TOTD #184: Logging WebSocket Frames using Chrome Developer Tools, Net-internals and Wireshark TOTD #185: Processing Text and Binary (Blob, ArrayBuffer, ArrayBufferView) Payload in WebSocket TOTD #186: Custom Text and Binary Payloads using WebSocket One of the typical usecase for WebSocket is online collaborative games. This Tip Of The Day (TOTD) explains a sample that can be used to build such games easily. The application is a collaborative whiteboard where different shapes can be drawn in multiple colors. The shapes drawn on one browser are automatically drawn on all other peer browsers that are connected to the same endpoint. The shape, color, and coordinates of the image are transfered using a JSON structure. A browser may opt-out of sharing the figures. Alternatively any browser can send a snapshot of their existing whiteboard to all other browsers. Take a look at this video to understand how the application work and the underlying code. The complete sample code can be downloaded here. The code behind the application is also explained below. The web page (index.jsp) has a HTML5 Canvas as shown: <canvas id="myCanvas" width="150" height="150" style="border:1px solid #000000;"></canvas> And some radio buttons to choose the color and shape. By default, the shape, color, and coordinates of any figure drawn on the canvas are put in a JSON structure and sent as a message to the WebSocket endpoint. The JSON structure looks like: { "shape": "square", "color": "#FF0000", "coords": { "x": 31.59999942779541, "y": 49.91999053955078 }} The endpoint definition looks like: @WebSocketEndpoint(value = "websocket",encoders = {FigureDecoderEncoder.class},decoders = {FigureDecoderEncoder.class})public class Whiteboard { As you can see, the endpoint has decoder and encoder registered that decodes JSON to a Figure (a POJO class) and vice versa respectively. The decode method looks like: public Figure decode(String string) throws DecodeException { try { JSONObject jsonObject = new JSONObject(string); return new Figure(jsonObject); } catch (JSONException ex) { throw new DecodeException("Error parsing JSON", ex.getMessage(), ex.fillInStackTrace()); }} And the encode method looks like: public String encode(Figure figure) throws EncodeException { return figure.getJson().toString();} FigureDecoderEncoder implements both decoder and encoder functionality but thats purely for convenience. But the recommended design pattern is to keep them in separate classes. In certain cases, you may even need only one of them. On the client-side, the Canvas is initialized as: var canvas = document.getElementById("myCanvas");var context = canvas.getContext("2d");canvas.addEventListener("click", defineImage, false); The defineImage method constructs the JSON structure as shown above and sends it to the endpoint using websocket.send(). An instant snapshot of the canvas is sent using binary transfer with WebSocket. The WebSocket is initialized as: var wsUri = "ws://localhost:8080/whiteboard/websocket";var websocket = new WebSocket(wsUri);websocket.binaryType = "arraybuffer"; The important part is to set the binaryType property of WebSocket to arraybuffer. This ensures that any binary transfers using WebSocket are done using ArrayBuffer as the default type seem to be blob. The actual binary data transfer is done using the following: var image = context.getImageData(0, 0, canvas.width, canvas.height);var buffer = new ArrayBuffer(image.data.length);var bytes = new Uint8Array(buffer);for (var i=0; i<bytes.length; i++) { bytes[i] = image.data[i];}websocket.send(bytes); This comprehensive sample shows the following features of JSR 356 API: Annotation-driven endpoints Send/receive text and binary payload in WebSocket Encoders/decoders for custom text payload In addition, it also shows how images can be captured and drawn using HTML5 Canvas in a JSP. How could this be turned in to an online game ? Imagine drawing a Tic-tac-toe board on the canvas with two players playing and others watching. Then you can build access rights and controls within the application itself. Instead of sending a snapshot of the canvas on demand, a new peer joining the game could be automatically transferred the current state as well. Do you want to build this game ?   • Ghosting Program for Ubuntu 12.10

    I am looking to figure out how to set up a mass backup system for a computer network (of about 25) and am looking for a ghosting program that makes an image of the entire system for backup/recovery purposes. While clonezilla would work.. you have to manually boot us the CD for it. I am looking for a program that runs INSIDE Ubuntu that sends a system image backup off to the network server at set times, then when needed could also be used to burn the clone back to the machine. Another words- automatically and the only time I have to do anything to it is when I need to burn a backup BACK to a 'crapped' machine. Any ideas?

  • Kernel panic when booting from USB

    I downloaded ubuntu-11.04-desktop-amd64.iso and used Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.6.3.exe to format my USB stick und put the ISO on it. When I tried to install from it, I've got a kernel panic just like here, except for the version number (mine was 2.6.38-8-generic #42-ubuntu). My ISO image seems to work, as I installed it into a VMWare player without problems. Booting Linux from USB works surely too, as I did it some time ago with an older Ubuntu version. I can imagine things to try out, e.g., write the image again, try another version, pray, look for patches, etc. However, I'm looking for a time-efficient solution, something what most probably works. An advice of the sort "wait two weeks until it's surely fixed, then download again" is acceptable, I'm determined to switch to Linux, but it can wait a bit.

The web pages have the following structure: UserDetails page (UserDetails.aspx) - includes UserDetailsController.ascx user control. UserDetailsController.ascx includes sub user controls like UserAccountDetails.ascx and UserLoginDetails.ascx etc Each sub user control contains a small amount of code/logic, the 'controller' user controls that host these sub user controls (i.e UserDetailsController.ascx) appear to call the business rules code and pass the data to the sub user controls. Is this a design pattern? What is it called?

  • Custom page sizes in paging dropdown in Telerik RadGrid

    Working with Telerik RadControls for ASP.NET AJAX is actually quite easy and the initial effort to get started with the control suite is very low. Meaning that you can easily get good result with little time. But there are usually cases where you have to go a little further and dig a little bit deeper than the standard scenarios. In this article I am going to describe how you can customize the default values (10, 20 and 50) of the drop-down list in the paging element of RadGrid. Get control over the displayed page sizes while using numeric paging... The default page sizes are good but not always good enough The paging feature in RadGrid offers you 3, well actually 4, possible page sizes in the drop-down element out-of-the box, which are 10, 20 or 50 items. You can get a fourth option by specifying a value different than the three standards for the PageSize attribute, ie. 35 or 100. The drawback in that case is that it is the initial page size. Certainly, the available choices could be more flexible or even a little bit more intelligent. For example, by taking the total count of records into consideration. There are some interesting scenarios that would justify a customized page size element: A low number of records, like 14 or similar shouldn't provide a page size of 50, A high total count of records (ie: 300+) should offer more choices, ie: 100, 200, 500, or display of all records regardless of number of records I am sure that you might have your own requirements, and I hope that the following source code snippets might be helpful. Wiring the ItemCreated event In order to adjust and manipulate the existing RadComboBox in the paging element we have to handle the OnItemCreated event of RadGrid. As a final step, ensure that the previously selected value is the active one using the FindItemByValue() method. Of course, there might be different requirements but I hope that the snippet above provide a first insight into customized page size value in Telerik's Grid.     I've read a lot about how GoTo was considered harmful and removed for other control structures that were more intuitive. Does anyone have a good example / sample of goto spaghetti code? Preferrably, the sample code should be difficult to follow, but realtively easy when rewritten into more conventional control structures. I know I could try to write you some of my own, but I've never really used goto and don't think I could due justice to the headaches its abuse can lead to. I want this for didactic purposes to train junior developers on what to avoid. Mainly, to point to illustrate how OOP is taking the same idea to next logical consequence. EDIT: by good example I mean code that is terrible to read and abuses it, rather than code that uses goto for reasonable optimization

    I overwrote and lost some important scripts and would like to setup version control to protect my stuff. I've used git before, and am familiar with commands, but don't understand where I would put my "remote" repository on an install set up on my own machine---the place I push/pull to. I don't intend to share or access remotely, I just want a little source control for my files. I followed the instructions here for setting up my staging area: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4249974/personal-git-repository But where do I put git "remote" repo on purely local git setup? How does the workflow work then? On the command in the above: git remote add origin ssh://myserver.com:/var/repos/my_repo.git Where should I put/name something like this? I am actually trying to change the default background image of my app. But when I run my project all the changes goes back to before values For Eg: This is the default line wer we are setting our background image this.sprite = cc.Sprite.create("res/HelloWorld.png"); I am changing it to the following line: this.sprite = cc.Sprite.create("res/CloseNormal.png"); But when I run my project CloseNormal.png goes back to HelloWorld.png I am using: OS: Win7 Cocos2d Ver: cocos2dx 2.2.2 Why is this happening.     I'm developing an italian card game using the mvc pattern. I have the class GameFrame that contains the view. The user's card are buttons (JButton objects). I have 3 controllers: GameController: to control the game in general. Contains the game loop. HumanPlayerController: to control the user input ComputerPlayerController: contains the AI of the computer PlayerController: is an interface with the makeTurn() method. It's implemented by HumanP.C. and ComputerP.C. HumanPlayerController implements ActionListener too. But what is the right way to access to the GameFrame buttons? I need it for understand which card was chosen. GameFrame and HumanPlayerController are in different packages. Should i make the JButtons public?

  • Ubuntu 12.04 wallpaper problem when using two monitors

    I am using two monitors, the main resolution is 1920x1080 and the secondary is 1440x900. Everything seems to work fine (with default drivers, fglrx crashes bad), besides windows opening in the wrong monitor (even when the main is set correctly), but now what I am trying to fix is the wallpaper problem, here's an image to explain it easier: http://i.imgur.com/msLRR.jpg It also happens with gradients. The secondary monitor is physically aligned like in the image, lower than the other, the wallpaper on the main screen seems to keep the size of the lower resolution, and then it start at the correct resolution the last part at right. Any way to fix this? I am using Ubuntu 12.04 with Gnome-Shell 3.4.1, the vga is a Radeon HD 6950 UPDATE I went to gnome-tweak-tool and disabled "Have file manager handle the desktop", now it looks ok on both monitors, but I can't have icons on my desktop, so I am still interested in solving it. UPDATE2 Disabling "Have file manager handle the desktop", in gnome-tweak-tool and then re-enabling it seems to work, but has to be done every time you turn on the PC.
