  On September 14, 2012 ZDNet blogger Joe McKendrick published Why IT is a Profession in Flux, a short article in which he makes the observation that "IT professionals are under considerable pressure to deliver more value to the business, versus being good at coding and testing and deploying and integrating." I forwarded that article to my list of Usual Suspects (the nearly 40 people who have participated in the podcast over the last 3 years), along with a suggestion that I wanted to put together a panel discussion to further explore the issue. This podcast is the result. As it happened, three of the people who responded to my query were in San Francisco for Oracle OpenWorld, as was I, so I seized the rare opportunity for a face to face conversation. • Problems with opening CHM Help files from Network or Internet

  As a publisher of a Help Creation tool called Html Help Help Builder, I’ve seen a lot of problems with help files that won't properly display actual topic content and displays an error message for topics instead. Here’s the scenario: You go ahead and happily build your fancy, schmanzy Help File for your application and deploy it to your customer. Or alternately you've created a help file and you let your customers download them off the Internet directly or in a zip file. The customer downloads the file, opens the zip file and copies the help file contained in the zip file to disk. She then opens the help file and finds the following unfortunate result:     The help file  comes up with all topics in the tree on the left, but a Navigation to the WebPage was cancelled or Operation Aborted error in the Help Viewer's content window whenever you try to open a topic. The CHM file obviously opened since the topic list is there, but the Help Viewer refuses to display the content. Looks like a broken help file, right? But it's not - it's merely a Windows security 'feature' that tries to be overly helpful in protecting you. The reason this happens is because files downloaded off the Internet - including ZIP files and CHM files contained in those zip files - are marked as as coming from the Internet and so can potentially be malicious, so do not get browsing rights on the local machine – they can’t access local Web content, which is exactly what help topics are. If you look at the URL of a help topic you see something like this:   mk:@MSITStore:C:\wwapps\wwIPStuff\wwipstuff.chm::/indexpage.htm which points at a special Microsoft Url Moniker that in turn points the CHM file and a relative path within that HTML help file. Try pasting a URL like this into Internet Explorer and you'll see the help topic pop up in your browser (along with a warning most likely). Although the URL looks weird this still equates to a call to the local computer zone, the same as if you had navigated to a local file in IE which by default is not allowed.  Unfortunately, unlike Internet Explorer where you have the option of clicking a security toolbar, the CHM viewer simply refuses to load the page and you get an error page as shown above. How to Fix This - Unblock the Help File There's a workaround that lets you explicitly 'unblock' a CHM help file. To do this: Open Windows Explorer Find your CHM file Right click and select Properties Click the Unblock button on the General tab Here's what the dialog looks like:   Clicking the Unblock button basically, tells Windows that you approve this Help File and allows topics to be viewed.   Is this insecure? Not unless you're running a really old Version of Windows (XP pre-SP1). In recent versions of Windows Internet Explorer pops up various security dialogs or fires script errors when potentially malicious operations are accessed (like loading Active Controls), so it's relatively safe to run local content in the CHM viewer. Since most help files don't contain script or only load script that runs pure JavaScript access web resources this works fine without issues. How to avoid this Problem As an application developer there's a simple solution around this problem: Always install your Help Files with an Installer. The above security warning pop up because Windows can't validate the source of the CHM file. However, if the help file is installed as part of an installation the installation and all files associated with that installation including the help file are trusted. A fully installed Help File of an application works just fine because it is trusted by Windows. Summary It's annoying as all hell that this sort of obtrusive marking is necessary, but it's admittedly a necessary evil because of Microsoft's use of the insecure Internet Explorer engine that drives the CHM Html Engine's topic viewer. • Sun2Oracle: Upgrading from DSEE to the next generation Oracle Unified Directory - webcast follow up

  Thanks to all of the guest speakers on our Sun2Oracle webcast: Steve from Hub City Media, Albert from UCLA and our own Scott Bonell. During the webcast, we tried to answer as many questions as we could, but there were a few that we needed a bit more time to answer.  Albert from UCLA sent me the following information: Alternate Directory EvaluationWe were happy with Sun DSEE. OUD, based on the research we had done, was a logical continuation of DSEE.  If we moved away, it was to to go open source. UCLA evaluated OpenLDAP, OpenDS, Red Hat's 389 Directory. We also briefly entertained Active Directory. Ultimately, we decided to stay with OUD for the Enterprise Directory, and adopt OpenLDAP for the non-critical edge directories.HardwareFor Enterprise Directory, UCLA runs 3 Dell PowerEdge R710 servers. Each server has 12GB RAM and 2 2.4GHz Intel Xeon E5 645 processors. We run 2 of those servers at UCLA's Data Center in a semi active-passive configuration. The 3rd server is located at UCLA Berkeley. All three are multi master replicated. At run time, the bulk of LDAP query requests go to 1 server. Essentially, all of our authn/authz traffic is being handled by 1 server, with the other 2 acting as redundant back ups.

• How To Speed Up Adding Column To Large Table In Sql Server

  I want to add a column to a Sql Server table with about 10M rows. I think this query would eventually finish adding the column I want: alter table T add mycol bit not null default 0 but it's been going for several hours already. Is there any shortcut to get a "not null default 0" column inserted into a large table? Or is this inherently really slow? This is Sql Server 2000. Later on I have to do something similar on Sql Server 2008.

• Updated Intel display driver causing errors when booting

  I upgraded to to Graphics Installer 1.0.6 on my Ubuntu 14.04 and installed the drivers using the Intel Graphics Installer. The laptop is Intel Ivybridge powered with Intel HD graphics. It Optimus but I have disabled the Nvidia card in bios. The Intel Graphics Installer installs the package i915-3.15-3.13-dkms.deb which I assume is the updated driver. It causes a bunch of error messages when I boot.   On my Ubuntu VPS, i have a mysql server running and a Glassfish 3.0.1 Application Server running. And I am having a hard to have my GF successfully ping the database. Here is my GF set up Assume: x.y.z.t is the ip of my VPS Resource Type: javax.sql.ConnectionPoolDataSource User: root DatabaseName: scholar Url: jdbc:mysql://x.y.z.t:3306/scholar URL: jdbc:mysql://x.y.z.t:3306/scholar Password: xxxx PortNumber: 3306 ServerName: x.y.z.t Inside my glassfish3/glassfish/lib, I have my mysql-connector-java-5.1.13-bin.jar Inside the database, table mysql here is the result of the query select User, Host from user; +------------------+-----------+ | User | Host | +------------------+-----------+ | root | 127.0.0.1 | | debian-sys-maint | localhost | | root | localhost | | root | yunaeyes | +------------------+-----------+ Now from my machine, if I try to connect to this db via mysql browser (mysql client software), well I cant. Well from the table above, seem like it only allow localhost to connect to this db. Keep in mind that both my db and my GF are on the same VPS. Please help

  Some day I will make it to Devoxx – for now, I’m content to vicariously follow the blogs of attendees and pick up on what’s happening.  I’ve been doing more blog "fishing," looking for the best commentary on 2011 Devoxx. There’s plenty of food for thought – and the ideas are not half-baked.The bloggers are out in full, offering useful summaries and commentary on Devoxx goings-on.Constantin Partac, a Java developer and a member of Transylvania JUG, a community from Cluj-Napoca/Romania, offers an excellent summary of the Devoxx keynotes. Here’s a sample:“Oracle Opening Keynote and JDK 7, 8, and 9 Presentation•    Oracle is committed to Java and wants to provide support for it on any device.•    JSE 7 for Mac will be released next week.•    Oracle would like Java developers to be involved in JCP, to adopt a JSR and to attend local JUG meetings.•    JEE 7 will be released next year.•    JEE 7 is focused on cloud integration, some of the features are already implemented in glassfish 4 development branch.•    JSE 8 will be release in summer of 2013 due to “enterprise community request” as they can not keep the pace with an 18    month release cycle.•    The main features included in JSE8 are lambda support, project Jigsaw, new Date/Time API, project Coin++ and adding   support for sensors. Here’s St. Ivanov’s account of Josh Bloch’s comments on the pluses of Java:“He started with the virtues of the platform. To name a few:    Tightly specified language primitives and evaluation order – int is always 32 bits and operations are executed always from left  to right, without compilers messing around    Dynamic linking – when you change a class, you need to recompile and rebuild just the jar that has it and not the whole application    Syntax  similarity with C/C++ – most existing developers at that time felt like at home    Object orientations – it was cool at that time as well as functional programming is today    It was statically typed language – helps in faster runtime, better IDE support, etc.    No operator overloading – well, I’m not sure why it is good. What's Coming in JAX-RS 2.0Marek Potociar, Principal Software Engineer at Oracle and currently specification lead of Java EE RESTful web services API (JAX-RS), blogged on his talk about what's coming in JAX-RS 2.0, scheduled for final release in mid-2012.  Here’s a taste:“Perhaps the most wanted addition to the JAX-RS is the Client API, that would complete the JAX-RS story, that is currently server-side only. In JAX-RS 2.0 we are adding a completely interface-based and fluent client API that blends nicely in with the existing fluent response builder pattern on the server-side. When we started with the client API, the first proposal contained around 30 classes. Thanks to the feedback from our Expert Group we managed to reduce the number of API classes to 14 (2 of them being exceptions)! The resulting is compact while at the same time we still managed to create an API that reflects the method invocation context flow (e.g. once you decide on the target URI and start setting headers on the request, your IDE will not try to offer you a URI setter in the code completion). • How to proxy to different named databases on the same server using MySQL Proxy?

  I would like to have two databases on my MySQL server: DEV_DB_A DEV_DB_B However, in order to keep everyone's scripts, Query Browser settings and anything else from changing when we switch from using on DB to another I'd like to have everyone connect to DEV_DB and then use something like MySQL Proxy running a lua script which knows the currently active DB is DEV_DB_A and routes queries to there. If we restore a fresh version of the DB to DEV_DB_B or make some changes (e.g. partition a table) we can easily switch to DEV_DB_B by changing one Lua script instead of updating references everywhere. I had hoped I might be able to symlink inside of the mysql data directory but that didn't work so it seems like MySQL Proxy is a reasonable approach. Being new to Lua and MySQL Proxy I'm wondering if anyone else has approached the problem this way and how it worked.

  Since the first beta of Analysis Services 2012, I worked with many companies designing and implementing solutions based on Analysis Services Tabular. I am glad that Microsoft published a white paper about a case-study using one of these scenarios: An Analysis Services Case Study: Using Tabular Models in a Large-scale Commercial Solution. Alberto Ferrari is the author of the white paper and many people contributed to it. The final result is a very technical document based on a case study, which provides a level of detail that I don’t see often in other case studies (which are usually more marketing-oriented). This white paper has the following structure: Requirements (data model, capacity planning, client tool) Options considered (SQL Server Columnstore Indexes, SSAS Multidimensional, SSAS Tabular) Data Model optimizations (memory compression, query performance, scalability) Partitioning and Processing strategy for near real-time latency Hardware selection (NUMA analysis, Azure VM tests) Scalability tests (estimation of maximum users per node) If you are in charge of evaluating Tabular as analytical engine, or if you have to design your solution based on Tabular, this white paper is a must read. But if you just want to increase your knowledge of Analysis Services, you will find a lot of useful technical information. • How to make a legacy system time-zone sensitive?

  I need to implement time zones in a very large and old Delphi system, where there's a central SQL Server database and possibly hundreds of client installations around the world in different time zones. The application already interacts with the database by only using the date/time of the database server. So, all the time stamps saved in both the database and on the client machines are the date/time of the database server when it happened, never the time of the client machine. So, when a client is about to display the date/time of something (such as a transaction) which is coming from this database, it needs to show the date/time converted to the local time zone. This is where I get lost. I would naturally assume there should be something in SQL to recognize the time zone and convert a DateTime field dynamically. I'm not sure if such a thing exists though. If so, that would be perfect, but if not, I need to figure out another way. This Delphi system (multiple projects) utilizes the SQL Server database using ADO components, VCL data-aware controls, and QuickReports (using data sources). So, there's many places where the data goes directly from the database query to rendering on the screen, without any code to actually put this data on the screen. In the end, I need to know when and how should I get the properly converted time? What is the proper way to ensure that I handle Dates and Times correctly in a legacy application?

  I used domaintools.com to do a traceroute on a bunch of sites, and noticed that every single one leads to this "nameintelligence.com" site that I have never heard of. Absolutely every site, including this one, google, my own site, yahoo, microsoft.com, stackoverflow, EVERYTHING, has nameintelligence.com in the first position. What is that site, and what do they do? They're a PR 4 apparently, yet I have never heard of them. I think this would be the right place to ask, I am sorry if I am wrong. • Database Schema Usage

  I have a question regarding the appropriate use of SQL Server database schemas and was hoping that some database gurus might be able to offer some guidance around best practice. Just to give a bit of background, my team has recently shrunk to 2 people and we have just been merged with another 6 person team. My team had set up a SQL Server environment running off a desktop backing up to another desktop (and nightly to the network), whilst the new team has a formal SQL Server environment, running on a dedicated server, with backups and maintenance all handled by a dedicated team. So far it's good news for my team. Now to the query. My team designed all our tables to belong to a 3-letter schema name (e.g. User = USR, General = GEN, Account = ACC) which broadly speaking relate to specific applications, although there is a lot of overlap. My new team has come from an Access background and have implemented their tables within dbo with a 3-letter perfix followed by "_tbl" so the examples above would be dbo.USR_tblTableName, dbo.GEN_tblTableName and dbo.ACC_tblTableName. Further to this, neither my old team nor my new team has gone live with their SQL Servers yet (we're both coincidentally migrating away from Access environments) and the new team have said they're willing to consider adopting our approach if we can explain how this would be beneficial. We are not anticipating handling table updates at schema level, as we will be using application-level logins. Also, with regards to the unwieldiness of the 7-character prefix, I'm not overly concerned myself as we're using LINQ almost exclusively so the tables can simply be renamed in the DMBL (although I know that presents some challenges when we update the DBML). So therefore, given that both teams need to be aligned with one another, can anyone offer any convincing arguments either way?

  I have an account, user_a, and I would like to grant all available permissions on some_db to user_b. I have tried the following query: GRANT ALTER, ALTER ROUTINE, CREATE, CREATE ROUTINE, CREATE TEMPORARY TABLES, CREATE VIEW, DELETE, DROP, EVENT, EXECUTE, INDEX, INSERT, LOCK TABLES, REFERENCES, SELECT, SHOW VIEW, TRIGGER, UPDATE ON `some_db`.* TO 'user_b'@'%' WITH GRANT OPTION The result: Access denied for user 'user_a'@'%' to database 'some_db' Some experimentation has shown me that the only permissions my account (user_a) is unable to grant are EVENT, EXECUTE, LOCK TABLES, and TRIGGER. What privileges are required for my account to GRANT these privileges to another user? • Monitoring IIS with SNMP

  Hello, I'm trying to monitor IIS using the Windows integrated SNMP service (for versions 2000, 2003 ans 2008 of Windows Server, but i'm doing my experiments on a 2008 R2 box). So far I was able to install the SNMP service, and query mib-2 values without problems. Now, I'm having trouble to monitor IIS informations, as the SNMP service does not seem to know about the .iso.org.dod.internet.private.enterprises.microsoft.software.internetServer OIDs. Walking the entire SNMP tree only gets the mib-2 stuff as well as the names of some services, but that's it. I did't find anything interesting in the service configuration panel. So how do I configure this service to get IIS information, or other WMI data for that matter (I installed the SNMP WMI Provider) ? I can't find any documentation about that !

• Hyperthreading vs. SQL Server & PostgreSQL

  I have read that hyperthreading is a "performance killer" when it comes to DBs. However, what I read didn't state which CPUs. Further, it mostly indicated that I/O was "cut to < 10% performance". That logically doesn't make sense since I/O is primarily a function of controllers and disks, not CPUs. But then no one ever said bugs made sense. What I read also stated that SQL Server could put two parallel query ops onto 1 logical core (2 threads), thereby degrading performance. I have a hard time believing SQL Server's architects would have made such an obvious miscalculation. Does anyone have and data on how hyperthreading on current generation CPUs affects either of the RDBMSs I mentioned?
