  • Prevent Apache from answering invalid requests

    I have an Apache web-server that acts as a web front-end for iPhone and iPad applications that communicate by POST and JSON only. Is there any way to prevent Apache from answering requests that are invalid? I can see my error log is filled with attempts to open files such as /admin.php /index.php etc - files that don't exist on my server. I believe this is possible with IIS, but can you do the same thing with Apache? Basically I want the request to appear timed out unless you post exactly the right content to the right file - or at least if you do not request an existing file. This would make the server appear non-existing to everyone but my iPhone users as all communication is SSL and directories are not really guess-able. I did disable the ServerTokens and all that, but I still get File not found etc. when I access the server requesting a random file, which is what these bots do constantly.

    Macports Apache2 not starting at Mac Osx snow leopard boot. I've done the launchctl load command, the symlinks point to my /opt/local//etc/LaunchDaemeons/org.macports.apache2/org.macports.apache2.plist, but it never starts. I can start it manually, works fine after that. Just wont load on startup. My server is named in my /opt/localapache2/conf/httd.conf, I had read that sometimes makes a difference. I've done the launchctl unload and load trick, al with no results. I'm out of ideas.

Today we take a look at an online service that allows you to read your articles later, either online, or on an iPhone, or eReader. Instapaper Instapaper is an awesome tool that allows you to save web pages so you can read them at a later time. Not only does it save an online article to read later, but also gives you several choices for where you want to read it. Sign up for a free account, and drag the “Read Later” bookmarklet to the bookmarks bar in your browser. To save a page you’ll need to be logged into your account. When you’re at a page that you can’t read right away, just click on the Read Later button in the bookmarks bar. After clicking the Read Later button, a small message is displayed indicating that the page has been saved to the Instapaper site. Save as many pages as you want, and when you’re ready to read them, go to the Instapaper site and you’ll see a list of the articles you saved. You can click on the link to go directly to the saved oage, read it as text (leaving out a bunch of images), or archive the article for later. One of the really appealing beta features is you can save the article in .mobi format for a Kindle, or ePub format for other eReaders such a the Sony Reader.   • How do I change OSX package install directory?

    It drives me nuts that every time I download a binary to run on OSX that it wants to install in system directories. ~/Applications is a perfectly fine place to install and doesn't require blindly authenticating somebody else's binary. Is there a way to change the install directory for packages? On a few I've been able to open the package and edit the plist to install it elsewhere, but that doesn't work universally. I install from source when I can, but it isn't always an option. Is there a good way to force the installer to use ~/Applications?

  • Recovering OS X Mail Accounts Lost in Crash

    I had a hard crash on my Mac PowerBook and when I restarted, Mail came up with only my MobileMe account still available and I cannot figure out how to restore the other eight email accounts I have. The directories in ~/Library/Mail all seem to be there. I even did an rsync of the modified .plist files from a TimeMachine backup of the directory from before the crash (unfortunately, I was on travel, so the backup is more than a week old and I'd like to try and recover from that point without having to entirely restore from TimeMachine). I also did a fix permissions. So my questions are where exactly is the account information for Mac Mail kept? Any thoughts of what might have caused the failure? Why does only MobileMe come up? Any other thoughts on how to fix things?

  • OSX 10.8 Corrupted User Account Using Launchctl

    I used the following command: launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.notificationcenterui.plist in an attempt to disable notification center. I'm not sure that I got all of the commands right and appear to have corrupted the account that I executed it from - I get a grey screen when I try to login on that account. Fortunately I have another account on the machine with admin privileges so I can still use the machine. I would however like to restore the account to a working condition preferably without having to resort to a complete system restore from my time machine backup. Is there a way of diagnosing the current status of this launchagent and returning it to its original state?

  • Is it bad to join open-source projects as an amateur?

    I've thought for about six months now that I should join an open-source iPhone or iPad project to hone my skills in Objective-C, but every time I go to do it I see thousands of lines of code on huge projects that I end up convincing myself I would never understand. I always think that my commits would just end up being a hassle for project admins and more senior contributors, so I always back out at the last second. My question essentially is, is it a hassle when an intermediately-experienced programmer joins an open-source project?
