• Designing a general database interface in PHP

  I'm creating a small framework for my web projects in PHP so I don't have to do the basic work over and over again for every new website. It is not my goal to create a second CakePHP or Codeigniter and I'm also not planning to build my websites with any of the available frameworks as I prefer to use things I've created myself in general. I have no problems in designing that framework when it comes to parts like the core structure, request handling, and so on but I'm getting stuck with designing the database interface for my modules. I've already thought about using the MVC pattern but thought that it would be a bit of a overkill. So the exact problem I'm facing is how my frameworks modules (viewCustomers could be a module, for example) should interact with the database. Is it a good idea to write SQL directly in PHP (mysql_query( 'SELECT firstname, lastname(.....))? How could I abstract a query like SELECT firstname, lastname FROM customers WHERE id=X Would MySQL helper functions like $this->db->get( array('firstname', 'lastname'), array('id'=>X) ) be a good idea? I suppose not because they actually make everything more complicated by requiring arrays to be created and passed. Is the Model pattern from MVC my only real option?

• Force a view change from a button when using UITabBarController

  Hello - When using a UITabBarController, when the user enters some data on View1 and presses a button, I need to perform some calculations and present the results on View2. I have an AppDelegate, View1Controller, View2Controller, and View3Controller (View3 is a basically static view). My AppDelgate declares UITabBarController *rootController; On View1, I have the calculations being performed in an IBAction for buttonPressed; however, I can't seem to force the view to switch to View2 programmatically. I have done a lot of searching for similar problems, and think I should be doing something like "self.rootController.selectedIndex = 1"; however,when I do this from within buttonPressed on my View1Controller, I get an error "request for member rootController in something not in a structure or union". I think I'm missing something basic here... probably need do do something with my AppDelegate, but I'm banging my head against the wall. Can anyone provide some guidance in this situation...like key things I should do in View1Controller header and implementation with reference to my AppDelgate? Thank you!

• .NET - Is there a way to programmatically fill all tables in a strongly-typed dataset?

  Hello, all! I have a SQL Server database for which I have created a strongly-typed DataSet (using the DataSet Designer in Visual Studio 2008), so all the adapters and select commands and whatnot were created for me by the wizard. It's a small database with largely static data, so I would like to pull the contents of this DB in its entirety into my application at startup, and then grab individual pieces of data as needed using LINQ. Rather than hard-code each adapter Fill call, I would like to see if there is a way to automate this (possibly via Reflection). So, instead of: Dim _ds As New dsTest dsTestTableAdapters.Table1TableAdapter.Fill(_ds.Table1) dsTestTableAdapters.Table2TableAdapter.Fill(_ds.Table2) <etc etc etc> I would prefer to do something like: Dim _ds As New dsTest For Each tableName As String In _ds.Tables Dim adapter as Object = <routine to grab adapter associated with the table> adapter.Fill(tableName) Next Is that even remotely doable? I have done a fair amount of searching, and I wouldn't think this would be an uncommon request, but I must be either asking the wrong question, or I'm just weird to want to do this. I will admit that I usually prefer to use unbound controls and not go with strongly-typed datasets (I prefer to write SQL directly), but my company wants to go this route, so I'm researching it. I think the idea is that as tables are added, we can just refresh the DataSet using the Designer in Visual Studio and not have to make too many underlying DB code changes. Any help at all would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance!

• ActiveRecord exceptions not rescued

  I have the following code block: unless User.exist?(...) begin user = User.new(...) # Set more attributes of user user.save! rescue ActiveRecord::RecordInvalid, ActiveRecord::RecordNotUnique => e # Check if that user was created in the meantime user = User.exists?(...) raise e if user.nil? end end The reason is, as you can probably guess, that multiple processes might call this method at the same time to create the user (if it doesn't already exist), so while the first one enters the block and starts initializing a new user, setting the attributes and finally calling save!, the user might already be created. In that case I want to check again if the user exists and only raise the exception if it still doesn't (= if no other process has created it in the meantime). The problem is, that regularly ActiveRecord::RecordInvalid exceptions are raised from the save! and not rescued from the rescue block. Any ideas? EDIT: Alright, this is weird. I must be missing something. I refactored the code according to Simone's tip to look like this: unless User.find_by_email(...).present? # Here we know the user does not exist yet user = User.new(...) # Set more attributes of user unless user.save # User could not be saved for some reason, maybe created by another request? raise StandardError, "Could not create user for order #{self.id}." unless User.exists?(:email => ...) end end Now I got the following exception: ActiveRecord::RecordNotUnique: Mysql::DupEntry: Duplicate entry '[email protected]' for key 'index_users_on_email': INSERT INTO `users` ... thrown in the line where it says 'unless user.save'. How can that be? Rails thinks the user can be created because the email is unique but then the Mysql unique index prevents the insert? How likely is that? And how can it be avoided?

• Can someone please debug this Windows Azure Application?

  Here's the myTODO project from codeplex: myTODO project I added any necessary libraries, added storage, changed obsolete types/methods, but everything went wrong when I debug it. • Nested parsers in happy / infinite loop?

  I'm trying to write a parser for a simple markup language with happy. Currently, I'm having some issues with infinit loops and nested elements. My markup language basicly consists of two elements, one for "normal" text and one for bold/emphasized text. data Markup = MarkupText String | MarkupEmph [Markup] For example, a text like Foo *bar* should get parsed as [MarkupText "Foo ", MarkupEmph [MarkupText "bar"]]. Lexing of that example works fine, but the parsing it results in an infinite loop - and I can't see why. This is my current approach: -- The main parser: Parsing a list of "Markup" Markups :: { [Markup] } : Markups Markup { $1 ++ [$2] } | Markup { [$1] } -- One single markup element Markup :: { Markup } : '*' Markups1 '*' { MarkupEmph $2 } | Markup1 { $1 } -- The nested list inside *..* Markups1 :: { [Markup] } : Markups1 Markup1 { $1 ++ [$2] } | Markup1 { [$1] } -- Markup which is always available: Markup1 :: { Markup } : String { MarkupText $1 } What's wrong with that approach? How could the be resolved? Update: Sorry. Lexing wasn't working as expected. The infinit loop was inside the lexer. Sorry. :) Update 2: On request, I'm using this as lexer: lexer :: String -> [Token] lexer [] = [] lexer str@(c:cs) | c == '*' = TokenSymbol "*" : lexer cs -- ...more rules... | otherwise = TokenString val : lexer rest where (val, rest) = span isValidChar str isValidChar = (/= '*') The infinit recursion occured because I had lexer str instead of lexer cs in that first rule for '*'. Didn't see it because my actual code was a bit more complex. :)

• Using SiteMesh with RequestDispatcher's forward()

  I'm attempting to integrate SiteMesh into a legacy application using Tomcat 5 as my a container. I have a main.jsp that I'm decorating with a simple decorator. In decorators.xml, I've just got one decorator defined: <decorators defaultdir="/decorators"> <decorator name="layout-main" page="layout-main.jsp"> <pattern>/jsp/main.jsp</pattern> </decorator> </decorators> This decorator works if I manually go to http://example.com/my-webapp/jsp/main.jsp. However, there are a few places where a servlet, instead of doing a redirect to a jsp, does a forward: getServletContext().getRequestDispatcher("/jsp/main.jsp").forward(request, response); This means that the URL remains at something like http://example.com/my-webapp/servlet/MyServlet instead of the jsp file and is therefore not being decorated, I presume since it doesn't match the pattern in decorators.xml. I can't do a <pattern>/*</pattern> because there are other jsps that do not need to be decorated by layout-main.jsp. I can't do a <pattern>/servlet/MyServlet*</pattern> because MyServlet may forward to main.jsp sometimes and perhaps error.jsp at other times. Is there a way to work around this without expansive changes to how the servlets work? Since it's a legacy app I don't have as much freedom to change things, so I'm hoping for something configuration-wise that will fix this. SiteMesh's documentation really isn't that great. I've been working mostly off the example application that comes with the distribution. I really like SiteMesh, and am hoping I can get it to work in this case.

• How do I POST/GET from rails to API with either ActiveResource or rest-client (preferred)?

  Hi, this is a pretty basic question but I'm not entirely clear how to do this. I am trying to use a third-party service that has RESTful service. The service is called Postful. But I'm not clear what exactly to do? I've looked at ActiveResource (http://api.rubyonrails.org/classes/ActiveResource/Base.html) and rest-client, but I'm still not clear exactly what steps, code, and files to create. http://www.postful.com/service/mail is one of the services (details found http://www.postful.com/developer/guide#rest ), but to upload an image I have to post the following (but I'm not sure how I actually do this?).   Hi, I'm trying to get the html content of a page using silverlight. Webresponse and request classes don't work in silverlight. I did some googling and I found something. • What's wrong with this iCalendar event?

  I'm generating iCalendar events using PHP. They pass the validation checkers but won't add to Google Calendar or iCalendar. Help - what am I doing wrong? • Django caching seems to be causing problems

  Hey guys, i have just implemented the Django Cache Local Memory back end in some my code, however it seems to be causing a problem. • CSS3 transition on table row using height property

  I have an HTML table displaying some information with a few rows. On each row, the user can click to reveal some additional rows that contains information related to the clicked row. Something like this: While the additional rows are being created with an AJAX request, a loading row is inserted right after the clicked row : Currently, everything works perfectly (drill down style), but I would like to add some animation to the loading row. I found a question ( this one ) that has a JSFiddle showing kind of what I want ( this fiddle ). I tried to implement something similar with CSS3 transitions, but I can't get it to work. Here's my simulated attempt ( fiddle only for deployment of the loading row ) using these transitions : -webkit-transition: height 0.1s ease-in-out; -moz-transition: height 0.1s ease-in-out; -ms-transition: height 0.1s ease-in-out; -o-transition: height 0.1s ease-in-out; transition: height 0.1s ease-in-out; Any thought on why my fiddle doesn't do any animation? Any other methods you would propose? Thanks!

• JSF how to temporary disable validators to save draft

  I have a pretty complex form with lots of inputs and validators. For the user it takes pretty long time (even over an hour) to complete that, so they would like to be able to save the draft data, even if it violates rules like mandatory fields being not typed in. I believe this problem is common to many web applications, but can't find any well recognised pattern how this should be implemented. Can you please advise how to achieve that? For now I can see the following options: use of immediate=true on "Save draft" button doesn't work, as the UI data would not be stored on the bean, so I wouldn't be able to access it. Technically I could find the data in UI component tree, but traversing that doesn't seem to be a good idea. remove all the fields validation from the page and validate the data programmaticaly in the action listener defined for the form. Again, not a good idea, form is really complex, there are plenty of fields so validation implemented this way would be very messy. implement my own validators, that would be controlled by some request attribute, which would be set for standard form submission (with full validation expected) and would be unset for "save as draft" submission (when validation should be skipped). Again, not a good solution, I would need to provide my own wrappers for all validators I am using. But as you see no one is really reasonable. Is there really no simple solution to the problem?

• URL with no query parameters - How to distinguish.

  Env: .NET 1.1 I got into this situation. Where I need to give a URL that someone could redirect them to our page. When they redirect they also need to tell us, what message I need to display on the page. Initially I thought of something like this. http://example.com/a.aspx?reason=100 http://example.com/a.aspx?reason=101 ... http://example.com/a.aspx?reason=115 So when we get this url based on 'reason' we can display different message. But the problem turns out to be that they can not send any query parameters at all. They want 15 difference URL's since they can't send query params. It doesn't make any sense to me to created 15 pages just to display a message. Any smart ideas,that have one URL and pass the 'reason' thru some means? EDIT: Options I'm thinking based on Answers Try HttpRequest.PathInfo or Second option I was thinking was to have a httphanlder read read the path like this - HttpContext.Request.Path based on path act. Ofcourse I will have some 15 entries like this in web.config. <add verb="*" path="reason1.ashx" type="WebApplication1.Class1, WebApplication1" /> <add verb="*" path="reason2.ashx" type="WebApplication1.Class1, WebApplication1" /> Does that look clean?

• Servlet Mapping Help - Possible to Avoid Referencing Context Name?

  Hi all, I am working on a Spring application and trying to get my URL mapping correct. What I would like to have work is the following: http://localhost:8080/idptest -> doesn't work But instead, I have to reference the context name in my URL in order to resolve the mapping: http://localhost:8080/<context_name>/idptest -> works How can I avoid the requirement of referencing the context name in my URL without using a rewrite/proxy engine e.g. Apache? • POST variables to web server?

  Hello I've been trying several things from Google to POST data to a web server, but none of them work: I'm still stuck at how to convert the variables into the request, considering that the second variable is an SQL query so it has spaces. Does someone know the correct way to use a WebClient to POST data? I'd rather use WebClient because it requires less code than HttpWebRequest/HttpWebResponse. • Is there a useDirtyFlag option for Tomcat 6 cluster configuration?

  In Tomcat 5.0.x you had the ability to set useDirtyFlag="false" to force replication of the session after every request rather than checking for set/removeAttribute calls. <Cluster className="org.apache.catalina.cluster.tcp.SimpleTcpCluster" managerClassName="org.apache.catalina.cluster.session.SimpleTcpReplicationManager" expireSessionsOnShutdown="false" **useDirtyFlag="false"** doClusterLog="true" clusterLogName="clusterLog"> ... The comments in the server.xml stated this may be used to make the following work: <% HashMap map = (HashMap)session.getAttribute("map"); map.put("key","value"); %> i.e. change the state of an object that has already been put in the session and you can be sure that this object still be replicated to the other nodes in the cluster. According to the Tomcat 6 documentation you only have two "Manager" options - DeltaManager & BackupManager ... neither of these seem to allow this option or anything like it. In my testing the default setup: <Cluster className="org.apache.catalina.ha.tcp.SimpleTcpCluster"/> where you get the DeltaManager by default, it's definitely behaving as useDirtyFlag="true" (as I'd expect). So my question is - is there an equivalent in Tomcat 6? Looking at the source I can see a manager implementation "org.apache.catalina.ha.session.SimpleTcpReplicationManager" which does have the useDirtyFlag but the javadoc comments in this state it's "Tomcat Session Replication for Tomcat 4.0" ... I don't know if this is ok to use - I'm guessing not as it's not mentioned in the main cluster configuration documentation.

  I have to submit subscription data to another website. I have got documentation on how to use this API however i'm not 100% sure of how to set this up. • Problem saving file on Motorola Droid, Android 2.1?

  Two of my users have reported a problem with my Android application, OftSeen Gestures. Both of them are using a Motorola Droid. The app saves a text file which is just a list of gesture names and phone numbers, both strings. It saves the file to the private data area. I don't know that it is this code that is failing but they report the assigned numbers disappearing after the phone comes out of screen sleep. Since the file is reread in OnCreate each time, I'm assuming the file doesn't exist on return. As soon as I can get my hands on a Droid I will debug it but in the meantime can you see a reason why this save operation would fail on Droid (no other users have reported this)? Note this is a genuine request for help - not an attempt to increase my downloads.

• Blackberry app stuck trying to access a server.

  Hi, I've built a ASP.NET webservice and I'm trying to access it from a Blackberry. I've been testing it out with multiple devices and the simulator and it works fine, but there's just the one Blackberry 9000 (It's not the model, I've tried it out with another Blackberry 9000), and it's stuck waiting for a response from the server. Say I want to grab the GameID, or if I can't do that, the "TitleName" to use that in my query? • Added buttons, webview, added outlets, but can't play with them in the code...

  Hi! I made a toolbar with two buttons on it. I then created two outlets in my class controller. Then I hooked the the controller to the buttons and selected the outlets. Finally I rewritten the class files (that added: IBOutlet id next; IBOutlet id previous; to my .h file). So now, everything looks okay. But then I try somewhere in the code to change the state of one of my button like this: next.enabled = YES; I tried with self. too but unfortunately I receive this error message: error: request for member 'enabled' in something not a structure or union Do you have any idea of what's happening there? And yes I have: #import <UIKit/UIKit.h> :) Using: [next setEnabled:YES]; gives me no error but still doesn't work... And finally, for documenting purposes here's the whole method: - (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; if (!self.currentLevel) { self.currentLevel = @"1"; } NSArray *etape = [self.etapes objectForKey:self.currentLevel]; if ([etape count] > 0) { self.navigationItem.title = [etape objectAtIndex:1]; if ([etape count] > 1) { [next setEnabled:YES]; } } else { self.navigationItem.title = @"Aucune étape"; } } When I do: NSLog(@"%@", [next class]); It returns (null) ...
