• Samba between Ubuntu server 10.10 and Windows Vista, Windows 7

  Hi all, I have a linux box running Linux server ubuntu 10.10. I have installed Samba on this linux box and want to share files with my laptops which run Windows Vista home and Windows 7 home. I have been struggling with the setup for almost a month but couldn't get it right. If I try to access share folder from Windows Vista, I get message "Windows cannot access \\server_ip_address". Error code: 0x80070035. The network path was not found. If I access from Windows 7, then after entering password to login I can see the list of share folders on Linux box. But if I click on a share folder, I get the same error message as above. • get ubuntu terminal to send an escape sequence (control+shift+up)

  This problem starts when I use emacs ( with -nw option). Let me first explain it. I tried to define hotkey (for emacs) as following (global-set-key [(control shift up)] 'other-window) but it doesn't work (no error, just doesn't work), neither does (global-set-key [(control shift down)] 'other-window) But (global-set-key [(control shift right)] 'other-window) and (global-set-key [(control shift left)] 'other-window) work! But because the last two key combinations are used by emacs (as default), I don't wanna change them for other functions. So how could I make control-shift-up and control-shift-down work? I have googled "(control shift up)", it seems that control-shift-up is used by other people, (but not very few results). In the Stack Overflow forum, Gille answered me as following: Ctrl+Shift+Up does send a signal to your computer, but your terminal emulator is apparently not transmitting any escape sequence for it. So your problem is in two parts. First you must get your terminal emulator to send an escape sequence, which depends on your terminal emulator, and is Super User material, or Unix.SE if you're using a unix system. • Switching from prefork MPM to worker MPM + php-fpm on ubuntu

• Ubuntu Server mdadm drbd ocfs2 kvm hangs under heavy file reading

  I have deployed four ubuntu 10.04 server. They are coupled two by two in a cluster scenario. on both sides we have software raid1 disks, drbd8 and OCFS2 and on top of it some kvm machines run with qcow2 disks. I followed this: Link corosync is just used for DRBD and OCFS, the kvm machines are run "manually" When it works is fine: good performances, good I/O, but at a given time one of the two cluster started hanging. Then we tried with just one server turned on and it hangs the same. It seems to happen when an heavy READ in one of the virtual machines occurs, that is during rsyn backup. When the fact occurs the virtual machines are not reachable any more and the real server responds with good delay to the ping but no screen and no ssh is available. All we can do is force shutdown (hold the button) and restart and when it turns on again the raid on which relay drbd is resyncing. All the time it hangs we see such fact. After a couple of week of pain on one side this morning also the other cluster hung, but it has different moteherboard, ram, kvm instances. What is similar is reading for rsync scenario and Western Digital RAID Edistion disks on both side. Can anybody give me some input to solve such issue?

• Strange Apache Webdav situation (OSX Will connect, Ubuntu will not)

  So basically my situation is that I have an Apache 2.2 webserver running on Linux on another box, and I have it configured to serve up webdav. Now here's the weird part, I can access the server just fine on my Mac using the "Connect to Server" dialog (even moved like 5GB of files over the connection). On my Ubuntu desktop cadaver will connect as well and allow me to browse. However when I try to use Xmarks (BYOS Edition) or the GNOME "Connect to Server" dialog, it gives me a 403 Forbidden error. My server does digest authentication if that makes any difference. • PHP Script Won't Run - Apache2/MySQL Servers Running, PHP Installed - Ubuntu 10.04

  I am trying to install a CRM on a Linux (Ubuntu 10.04) laptop to do some testing. Installing the current versions of Apache, MySQL and PHP, and getting the CRM to run is easy. It's when I try to go backwards and run it on a previous set of versions I run into problems. This is what I have done: I have installed Apache 2.2.14, MySQL 5.0.83, and PHP 5.2.8. When I type something like mysql --version I get back what I would expect: version and distribution info. The same goes for Apache2 and PHP. The Apache server is running and so is mysqld. So when I go to my browser and look at http://localhost/<CRM dir>/install.php Firefox offers to open the PHP file or save it, as if it doesn't recognize the file. What should happen is that I should get a welcome page and the installation wizard for this CRM distribution should start. I have tried so many different things I probably screwed up something along the way. I have restarted the servers over and over, and even recompiled the versions of MySQL and PHP with no problems. I am hoping I am overlooking something simple because I am lost. Any help is appreciated.

• cannot commit svn with dav on ubuntu

  So there are several similar questions on serverfault ... but the solution is still eluding me. I am running subversion on ubuntu 9.04 .. through apache2.2.x .... i get Commit failed (details follow): Can't make directory '/home/kirb/svn/dav/activities.d': Permission denied when i attempt to commit. It is deffinitely a permissions issue... but how to fix it is still eluding me. my repository is in /home/kirb/svn. http://serverfault.com/questions/61573/svn-commit-error says to chgrp .. but i dont seem to be able to. all the apache dav stuff seems to be working though. I can access my repository just fine through a browser. apologies if i am missing something simple here. • Ubuntu VM "read only file system" fix?

  I was going to install VMWare tools on an Ubuntu server Virtual Machine, but I ran into the issue of not being able to create a cdrom directory in the /mnt directory. I then tested to see if it was just a permissions issue, but I couldn't even create a folder in the home directory. It continues to state that it is a read only file system. I know a little about Linux, and I'm not comfortable with it yet. Any advice would be much appreciated. • Tool for search, watch and download youtube videos on Ubuntu

  I am looking for a tool like MacTubes for Ubuntu. MacTubes is a mac app that can search, watch and download youtube videos. The great advantage of this app is that it searches youtube and shows all videos available there and allows you to select all and download everything fast and easy. MacTubes is so awesome that it also converts the video to MP4 and downloads the HD version of a video when available. I use this on my mac, but my sister uses Linux and I am looking for something like that for her. I have tried Miro, but Miro's search feature is bad as hell. I search for something using MacTubes and it shows me 1600 results. The same search under Miro shows me 40 results. Miro never shows more than one page of results. I prefer it to be an application with a GUI, instead of command line, because my sister's proficiency in Linux is not that good. Any suggestions? Thanks.

  I have a wired router to which my ubuntu laptop connects via ethernet. The wierless NIC of the laptop acts as a wireless hotspot on master mode. I use hostapd fo this. I have bridged eth0 and wlan0, so my wireless clients that connect to my laptop over wifi get ip from the wired router via dhcp, so the devices get registered at the wired router ( and the laptop is just an access point). I use the following commands to get my laptop+accesspoint working: sudo brctl addbr br0 sudo brctl addif br0 eth0 sudo hostapd /etc/hostapd/hostapd.conf & sudo dhclient -d br0 & sudo ifconfig wlan0 192.168.1.15 netmask 255.255.255.0 up sudo brctl addif br0 wlan0 These commands enable me to access internet on my wireless clients and also on the laptop which is acting as wireless accesspoint. But if I reboot the wired router (without rebooting the laptop that is acting as accesspoint), Internet access on the laptop+accesspoint gets lost, but on wireless clients it works fine. Even I have not been able to figure out a command which will reset the laptop interfaces to default settings, so everytime the router reboots, I have to reboot the laptop too to get into default settings so that I can re-enter the above mentioned commands. My first question is How can I have my bridge+accesspoint up and running even-though the router reboots? And is there a command to set the interfaces to a default state? (ifdown -a doesn't work, after issuing the command the bridge still remained).

• memory tuning with rails/unicorn running on ubuntu

  I am running unicorn on Ubuntu 11, Rails 3.0, and Ruby 1.8.7. It is an 8 core ec2 box, and I am running 15 workers. CPU never seems to get pinned, and I seem to be handling requests pretty nicely. My question concerns memory usage, and what concerns I should have with what I am seeing. (if any) Here is the scenario: Under constant load (about 15 reqs/sec coming in from nginx), over the course of an hour, each server in the 3 server cluster loses about 100MB / hour. This is a linear slope for about 6 hours, then it appears to level out, but still maybe appear to lose about 10MB/hour. If I drop my page caches using the linux command echo 1 /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches, the available free memory shoots back up to what it was when I started the unicorns, and the memory loss pattern begins again over the hours. Before: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 7130244 5005376 2124868 0 113628 422856 -/+ buffers/cache: 4468892 2661352 Swap: 33554428 0 33554428 After: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 7130244 4467144 2663100 0 228 11172 -/+ buffers/cache: 4455744 2674500 Swap: 33554428 0 33554428 My Ruby code does use memoizations and I'm assuming Ruby/Rails/Unicorn is keeping its own caches... what I'm wondering is should I be worried about this behaviour? • Configuring three monitors with two Radeon X1600/X1650 graphics cards under Ubuntu

  I have three SyncMaster 932a monitors I want to use with two Radeon X1600/X1650 cards under Linux. I am running X.org X Server 1.6.0, as provided by Ubuntu's Wubi installer. After turning off mirroring, I ended up with this xorg.conf: Section "Monitor" Identifier "Configured Monitor" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Default Screen" Monitor "Configured Monitor" Device "Configured Video Device" SubSection "Display" Virtual 2560 1024 EndSubSection EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "Configured Video Device" EndSection The left monitor had a menu bar and a task bar, the center monitor was just desktop, and windows would maximize to the current monitor. The third monitor and second graphics card weren't being used at all. I also tried adding Option "Xinerama" "true" to the ServerLayout section. X11 wasn't able to start up. I want to: Allow moving windows along all three monitors. Maximizing only fills the current monitor. Either have menu/task bars on only the left monitor or all three monitors How can I make this possible?

• Nginx + Ubuntu 9.10, gzip not functioning

  Hey there, So I installed and configured Nginx 0.7.62 on a new Slicehost Ubuntu 9.10 slice. All seems to work fine with the server, except that gzip isn't working for one reason or another. I made sure that it's setting were correct in /etc/nginx/nginx.conf: user www-data; worker_processes 3; error_log /var/log/nginx/error.log; pid /var/run/nginx.pid; events { worker_connections 1024; # multi_accept on; } http { include /etc/nginx/mime.types; access_log /var/log/nginx/access.log; sendfile on; #tcp_nopush on; keepalive_timeout 2; tcp_nodelay on; gzip on; gzip_comp_level 2; gzip_proxied any; gzip_types text/plain text/css application/x-javascript; gzip_disable "MSIE [1-6]\."; include /etc/nginx/conf.d/*.conf; include /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/*; } This normally wouldn't be a big deal, but gzip support could save considerable bandwidth for my site. Does anyone have any ideas of what to check, or has anyone else run into this problem?

• SSH from ubuntu server to Windows 2008 repeatedly asks for password

  I am trying to setup GIT using SSH mode. The central GIT repository is on a NAS device running Windows 2008 server and the user GIT repository is on ubuntu 12.04. When I try to SSH to the windows machine however I am not able to successfully get in. SSH keays are not setup but I think the problem is even before that since I cant get in just by providing the correct password. The output from the SSH command is below. • Mail Server on Google Apps, Hotmail Blocks

  My company provides private research tools (sites) for companies. Each site has its own domain name and users. These sites need to be able to send outbound mail for notifications such as password reminders. We started using Google Apps for this purpose, but lately we are having tremendous problems with mailing, especially to hotmail. I added the SPF record as required. Mxtoolbox says my domains are not in any blacklists. I was told to contact https://postmaster.live.com/snds/addnetwork.aspx and add my network. Given that I am using google's mail servers for sending mail, should I add their IP address for registering my domain? Or should I add my server's IP even though I am not hosting the mail server on it?   Hi, I'm about to install a server. Some context: My HDD is 1 TB and I have 2 GB RAM Ubuntu Server Lucid Lynx AMD 64 I will use OpenVZ and have most functionality separated into containers. To support disk quotas I need to use ext3 (not ext4) for the container partition. Each time I reboot the server I want to be forced to login through SSH and mount the encrypted partitions by typing my password (if someone steals the server, no critical data should be available). I want to have as much as possible encrypted. Yet I want to be able to login through SSH as I don't have a monitor or keyboard at the server. I am not sure how big I need my partitions to be. Being able to resize them later would be nice. I guess it implies using LVM? But the manual partition mount using SSH is also very important (in fact it's more important, if I have to pick one). How do you recommend that I partition the HDD? If I have daemons which needs the encrypted partitions, will they fail and can I just restart them after mounting the needed partitions?
