  We started to use TFS to track requests using Work items. 1. Telerik's  TFS Work Item Manager (beta version for TFS 2010 is available) that could be interesting to use instead of standard VS2010, especially for someone who doesn’t want to have VS installed on their machine.(thanks to dimarzionist who pointed to the tool).See also TFS Project Dashboa 2.Visual Studio TFS work item attachments Tab I've found that Outlook emails can be dropped to TFS work item attachments. Just open TFS work item attachment tab and drag and drop Outlook email to it. Also you can copy any selected text and paste it to TFS work item attachments tab. The text will be saved as an attachment file.

• Ubuntu won't install from Live CD

  Complete noob here. I am trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 from a Live CD. I told the computer to boot from the CD (it does) & it reads the CD & then quits with the Ubuntu dots just freezing. I checked the disk & did the memory test, both OK. I also did the nomodeset in the start-up line. Hit escape when it froze but there were no msgs. Have also tried Ubuntu 12.10 & Dream Studio, same thing. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks! Erik The Pope

• Security considerations for a default install?

  So with an old burned install CD of Feisty Fawn I went through the process of completely formatting the Windows OS and installing Ubuntu on an old XP laptop. I then went through the online upgrade to 10.4 LTS, only installing the gnome desktop environment package in the process. My (admittedly very open) question is that in this state and online, what security considerations do I have to immediately make for the default install? I understand that a lot of this swings on my intended use of the server, but just sitting there online what risks is it exposed to (this obviously goes far beyond the realm of linux, but I am not sure how these risks are accommodated in the default install). For example, I believe there is a firewall installed with Ubuntu but by default it allows all traffic. Any other guidelines would be much appreciated. Thanks

• Donald Ferguson says end-user programming is next big thing. Is it?

  You can guess how I came to ask this question... Anyway : http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-11944966 Donald Ferguson claiming that his websphere was his biggest disaster and proclaiming that end-user programming will be the way forward. This genuinely spurs the question : what with current programming languages. Honestly, I don't think that end-user programming will go much beyond a rather rigid template where you can build some apps around. If you see how many people actually manage to understand the basic functionality of functions in EXCEL... Plus, I fail to see how complex and performant systems can be built in such an end-user programming language ( Visual Basic, anyone?) Nice to play around with, but for many applications they're just not the thing. So no worries for the old languages if you ask me. What's your ideas?

  I've am a developer whose has spent most of my programming life developing web and business applications. I want to try my hand at something more challenging (but stay in the comfort of Visual Studio) ...perhaps XNA. Want 3D modeling software would be best for someone developing XNA? I have played with 3d MAX and Maya but never really did anything too involved. What are the pros and cons between them (in terms of game development)? Does one win out over the other for game development? Or is it pretty much just preference? I am new to game development and just trying to figure out the best tools to use before I really started. Any advice or other suggections would be greatly appreciated.

• 'Important security update' for Firefox and flash plugin, but the update cannot be selected

  [This question has been updated as I now have the same problem with Firefox in addition to flash plugin] The update manager (on Ubuntu 12.04, 64bit) shows an 'important security update' for flashplugin-installer:i386, firefox, and firefox-globalmenu. The update is unticked, and cannot be selected, and therefore cannot be updated (I can update other packages without problems). Actually the flashplugin-installer package does not appear to be installed on my computer (judging from the Software Centre). I can't remember how I installed flash, probably directly from the Adobe website. The updater asks me if I want to do a partial upgrade. When running sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade from terminal, I get the following: The following packages have been kept back: firefox firefox-globalmenu flashplugin-installer:i386

  Ubuntu Core's wiki page page contains the instructions to install Ubuntu Core on a target media: Uncompress (do not unpack) rootfs Format target media: at least one partition should be ext2, ext3, or ext4 Unpack Ubuntu Core to ext{2,3,4} partition Install boot-loader Install Linux If the Linux kernel requires modules, add these to /lib/modules/$(uname -r) in the ext{2,3,4} file system Boot the target device Install any additional required software using apt-get But what are the specific commands to do the above? The things I'm specifically confused about are: Uncompressing and unpacking, what's the difference and how do I do them? What package should I install if I want the generic kernel provided in regular Ubuntu installation? I won't be installing any drivers or anything related to kernel other than what's provided in the repos, do I need to worry about manually adding kernel modules? PS I would like to request that all the commands used in the installation process be mentioned in the answer, for the benefit of ones who're completely unfamiliar and myself, should I ever forget.

I am behind an authenticated proxy server. How do I get Steam working from behind a proxy server?

• Record Screen Activity with CamStudio

  Sometimes a visual demonstration works much better than a list of instructions. If you need to make a demo video for family and/or friends then you might want to have a look at CamStudio. Using CamStudio To get properly set up you will need to install two different files (the main program followed by the codec). Once that is done you are ready to get started. When you start the program you will see a surprisingly small window. Notice the highlighted Record to text…it serves as a visual indicator for the video type selected for recording. Before you start creating a video it would be a good idea to look through some of the settings. The first one to look at is the region or area that you want to record. Next you will want to look through the video options since these will affect the quality and final size of your video files. The default setting for quality is 70…adjust that to the level that best suits your needs. Note: For our example we maxed out the various video settings for best quality. On our system Microsoft Video 1 was listed as the default compressor but as you can see there were other options available. You can configure the settings for the compressor you want to use if desired. Keep in mind that each compressor will have unique settings of their own, so if you change it, be certain to go back and check. We decided to use the CamStudio Lossless Codec for our example (it gave the best results while trying the software). Going back to the main window you can toggle back and forth between .avi and .swf output using the last button. Once you are satisfied with the settings click on the red record button to start. If you need to pause while recording or stop recording click on the system tray icon and select the appropriate command. When you are finished recording, you will be presented with the save file window. Browse for the desired save location and name your new file. Once you have saved the file the movie player window will automatically open so that you view your new video. Our sample video shown here is at 50% of original size so may look slightly “gritty”. The detail was much better at 100%. If you decide to record and save as .swf the process will be identical to recording in .avi format until the movie player window opens. At that time the conversion process from .avi to .swf will begin. When complete you will have a new flash video and html file that goes with it. Depending on which browser you have set as default, you may run into a small problem when the preview for your new .swf file tries to open. There is a small bug in the generated html file. You can use this work-around or… Just open the .swf file directly in your favorite browser. Conclusion CamStudio may not produce the highest quality videos, but it’s free and does a very nice job nonetheless. If you are working on a tight budget or only need to make an occasional video then CamStudio is a very sensible choice. • Wecam not detected

  after much research ang googling, my web cam is still not recognized. In the time of Ubuntu 11.04 it was working fine. I did a fresh install of 11.10 and not more web cam. All the cheese and camera monotor and V4L tests and all failes with "cannot connect to /dev/video0" or equivalent. The output of 'lsusb' shows the webcam Bus 001 Device 002: ID 05a9:2640 OmniVision Technologies, Inc. OV2640 Webcam What I noticed is that neither /dev/v4l nor /dev/video* exists. If I re-install the v4l package all the /dev/video* are created, but no /dev/v4l If I reboot the /dev/video* are NOT created. I think the trouble is that the device are not created at boot time. I have a DELL Inspiron 1525 and until this fresh install the web cam worked fine. Can somebody help ? Thanks a lot Richard

• IIS7 Serving .mp4s, not playable on iOS devices.

  I've added the proper MIME type to the server, made sure it applies to not only the specific site but even the all of server's sites. The file is accessible and playable in my browser (Chrome) but when trying to pull it up on an iPhone , the debug mode warns me that the "movie could not be played" but on iPad it's "byte_range_error_message" I'm really at a loss here of why iOS devices won't load the video up. I know it's not the video files themselves because I had used the same file on a different server (on a shared hosting package). Any help is appreciated! -Dan

• What can i use as a 3d Tile map editor?

  I need to make grid based levels with 3d models for a dungeon crawler ( as a recent example Legend of Grimrock), but i need to have several layers and place entities with properties and position, angle, etc. I was considering Tiled, using layers as height for each level, but it's very hard to work with and visualize. What can i use for this pourpose? The output format needs to be json, xml, or something i can use on my engine. Ideally i'd want something like Tiled with a 3d visualization/edit mode and support for loading models or at least some visual representation of them.

  Why doesn't Visual Basic.NET have the addressof operator like C#? In C#, one can int i = 123; int* addr = &i; But VB has no equivalent counter part. It seems like it should be important. UPDATE Since there's some interest, Im copying my response to Strilanc below. The case I ran into didnt necessitate pointers by any means, but I was trying to trouble shoot a unit test that was failing and there was some confusion over whether or not an object being used at one point in the stack was the same object as an object several methods away.

• How do I get a Canon imageClass MF4350d printer working?

  I have an imageClass MF4350d printer/scanner/fax. I've tried to install the drivers. The printer is recognized in the system settings, but nothing prints. The scanner is working in simple scan. I tried following all of the troubleshooting suggestions in this thread with no success I downloaded this driver. I downloaded the Linux_UFRII_PrinterDriver_V230_uk_EN from Canon: Installation: 1st attempt: I installed the CNCUPSMF4350ZK.ppd file in the printer settings and moved the pstoufr2cpca file to /usr/lib/cups/filter. 2nd attempt: I followed forum advice of installing a fake gs-esp to tell the system that "gs-esp" is PROVIDED by the package "fake-gs-esp" I then converted the RPM sudo apt-get install alien sudo alien -k cndrvcups-common-2.20-1.x86_64.rpm sudo alien -k cndrvcups-ufr2-uk-2.20-1.x86_64.rpm I then installed the resulting .deb packages. Since I'm new to Linux, as much detail as possible in your suggestions would be very appreciated. I am still learning how to use the Terminal. Thank you very much!

  I am new to game development but familiar with programming languages. I have started using Flixel and have a working Breakout game with score and lives. I am just stuck on how I can create a new screen/game over screen if a player runs out of lives. • Installing/configuring mysql server nightmare

  I've never had problems installing and configuring mysql server in kubuntu but now it's just being stubborn, here's my issue: I installed the packages mysql-server, mysql-client (both 5.1), the server package asked me to put a root password, which I did, it then started saying "access denied", on anything Later on, I decided to purge the packages and re-install and gave a tweak to the my.cnf and not it says ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) Please, is there a way to do a fresh start on this and do it right this time? I don't know if I'm missing something but the /var/lib/mysql is not empty but there is no .pid, now the mysql service won't start, there is no mysql.sock either Any help appreciated

• Issues when upgrading gnome-session

  I'm having issues since yesterday after an upgrade. GNOME session got messed up somehow and now i cannot install further upgrades nor new apps. Here is what i got from terminal after doing the recommended apt-get install -f; (Reading database ... 166876 files and directories currently installed.) Preparing to replace gnome-session 3.0.1-0ubuntu1~build2 (using .../gnome-session_3.0.2-0ubuntu3~natty1_all.deb) ... • alien deletes .deb automatically while converting from .rpm

  I'm trying to convert .rpm to .deb using alien. alien -k libtetra-1.0.0-2.i386.rpm Alien says that: libtetra-1.0.0-2.i386.deb generated But when I check the folder - there is just original .rpm and no .deb. Also - I can see that for a split second there is a .deb file in a folder. so it looks like alien create .deb and deletes it right away. I suspect that it's maybe because I run 64 bit os and package is 32? Can somebody explain why alien deletes .deb automatically?

• Test Driven Development with vxml

  It's been 3 years since I did any coding and am starting back up with Java using netBeans and glassfish.  Right off the bat I noticed two things about Java's ease of use.  The java ide (netBeans) has finally caught up with visual studio, and jUnit, has finally caught up with nUnit.  netBeans intellisense exists and I don't have to subclass everything in jUnit.    Now on to the point of this very short post ( request)   I'm trying to figure out how to do test driven development with vxml and have not found anythnig yet.  I've done my google search, but unfortunately, TDD in IVR land has something to do with helping the hearing impared. I've found a vxml simulator or two, but none of their marketing is getting my hopes up.    My request - if you have done any agile engineering work with vxml, contact me, I need to pick your brain and bring some ideas back to my team.   Thanks in advance.

• Problem with Numlock light and remapping keyboard

  I upgraded to Ubuntu 13.10. And there are two problem: Numlock is on. But after I press Ctrl+Space (hotkey for IBus, (default in 13.10 is Super+Space)), Numlock is off and I must press Numlock button twice to enable Numlock. About remapping keyboard, because my keyboard have some broken key, so I am using xmodmap to remap my keyboard (config file for xmodmap is $HOME/.xmodmap). But when I switch keyboard layout (I mentioned above), everything changed to default, and I must run xmodmap .xmodmap to remap keyboard again. When using Ubuntu 13.04, everything is good. How to solve my problems? UPDATE: 1. I am using two keyboard layout: English (US) and Unikey (from ibus-unikey package). 2. If I change key board layout using menu on Unity panel, no first problem.
