• Best way to provide software settings?

  I'm using C# .NET. In my software I'm providing settings dialog through which user can set the application settings which I want to save to a file. Requirements (typical): Every class I defined uses some part of these settings. So, these should be global to all classes. These should be loaded while software is started. When ever user changes settings and clicks 'save'/'apply'. Current settings should change. I am wondering what is the best way to do this? Also, what is the best way to save these settings to disk? I mean should I create a Settings class object and serializing it to 'settings.dat' or provide an structured file like XML/JSON

• How can I make a read only version of a class?

  I have a class with various public properties which I allow users to edit through a property grid. For persistence this class is also serialized/deserialized to/from an XML file through DataContractSerializer. Sometimes I want to user to be able to save (serialize) changes they've made to an instance of the class. Yet at other times I don't want to allow the user to save their changes, and should instead see all the properties in the property grid as read only. I don't want to allow users to make changes that they'll never be able to save later. Similar to how MS Word will allow users to open documents that are currently opened by someone else but only as read only. My class has a boolean property that determines if the class should be read-only, but is it possible to use this property to somehow dynamically add a read-only attributes to the class properties at run-time? If not what is an alternative solution? Should I wrap my class in a read-only wrapper class?

• How to write a shell in Python

  I've written a small console application that can perform certain tasks. The user interface is similar to things like version control systems or yum etc. So basically you can think of it as a domain specific language. Now I'd like to write a (bash like) shell that can execute and auto-complete this language and has a command history (so I do not have to load and save the quite large xml files on each command). In a nutshell I want something like ipython but not for executing python code but my own DSL. Are there any libraries that help me doing this? I see that there is a readline and rlcompleter module in python but its documentation seems to indicate that this is only for use with the python shell itself, or did I miss something there?

  Hi, I'm planning on implementing a google site search (and paying for it so I can get access to the XML). One thing I am wondering about is the possibility to use custom meta tags in it. I've heard yes from colleagues but nothing confirmed. Searching for an answer has given nothing (maybe because you cant?) Anybody knows? Edit: I want to be able to retrieve those meta tags from the search result to be able to provide different styling for different types of pages.

  I have a ternary association table created using the following mapping: <map name="Associations" table="FooToBar"> <key column="Foo_id"/> <index-many-to-many class="Bar" column="Bar_id"/> <element column="AssociationValue" /> </map> I have 3 tables, Foo, Bar, and FooToBar. When I delete a row from the Foo table, the associated row (or rows) in FooToBar is automatically deleted. This is good. When I delete a row from the Bar table, the associated row (or rows) in FooToBar remain, with a stale reference to a Bar id that no longer exists. This is bad. How can I modify my hbm.xml to remove stale FooToBar rows when deleting from the Bar table?

  I'd like to have Ant automatically include or import resources matching a particular pattern, but I'm really struggling with the syntax. Here's what I've tried: <import> <fileset dir="${basedir}" includes="*-graph.xml" /> </import> However, I just get the error message import requires file attribute or at least one nested resource The documentation for import (and include) both say that you can use a nested resource collection, and the documentation for resource collections says <fileset> is a resource collection. I've Googled and can't find any useful examples at all. I'm using Ant 1.8.1 (verified with ant -version)

• MSXML2.ServerXMLHTTP.4.0 Source?

  Where does the object "MSXML2.ServerXMLHTTP.4.0" come from? Which install package? I'm attempting to do the following: Set oXMLHTTP = CreateObject("MSXML2.ServerXMLHTTP.4.0") This attempt fails on my development machine (no object is returned) but it is successful on my collage's development machine. Obviously he has something installed that I don't or vice versa but where does this object, dll, etc come from? What would I need to install to get this call to work. For the record, changing the object to a different version isn't an option because code that this depends on was tested for several days against this specific version. We'd have to go back and test again... To expand on this question, how can I tell which version of MS XML is currently installed?

• Should I be building GUI applications on Windows using Perl & Tk?

  I have a bunch of related Perl scripts that I would like to put together in one convenient place. So I was thinking of building a GUI and incorporating the scripts. I'm using Strawberry Perl on Windows XP and have just installed Tk from cpan about fifteen minutes ago. Before I go for it, I want some sound advice either for or against it. My other option is to translate the Perl scripts into VB and use Visual Studio 2008, but that might be too much hassle for an outcome that might end up all the same had I just stuck with Perl & Tk. I haven't looked yet, but maybe there is a module for Visual Studio that would allow me to invoke Perl scripts? The main requirements are: It must be able to communicate with MySQL It must be able to fetch & parse XML files from the internet It must be transportable, scalable, and sustainable What direction would you take?

• How do I customise date/time bindings using JAXWS and APT?

  Im using JAXWS 2.1.7, using some classes to run through JAXWS's 'apt' to generate the WSDL. For dates, I use @XmlSchemaType(name="time") private Date wakeupTime; and this generates a schema with xs:time, but when this all comes out in XML, the value is something like <wakeupTime>1901-01-01T01:00:00 +10</wakeupTime> I want JUST the time portion to come! I think I want to use a custom converter to say that xs:time + java.util.Date should be printed and parsed in such-and-sucha manner, but I cant see that I can pass a bindings file to the apt routine. I can't (for historical & other reasons) use XMLGregorianCalendar - it has to be a java.util.Date. How do I specify a custom binding for the apt tool in jaxb

  Hi All, I need to build a quicken like application, where data needs to be secure. I don't see any database being used by Quicken. I could use XML, MDF or Access database, but data is not secure in the tables. What is the best option? How does Quicken handle it? My application may also have document attachments as well. • Add blank cell at end of UITable

  I'm trying to add an additional cell for custom content as the last cell in a tableView, without altering the dictionary that creates the other content of the table. I think the place to add it is in cellForRowAtIndexPath rather than adding one to the numberOfRowsInSection, which just crashes if I do. I get a cellCount from the dictionary that creates the data for the table, then in cellForRowAtIndexPath, I have: if (indexPath.row == cellCount) { ... stuff goes here return cell; } of course, this never gets called. If I do if (indexPath.row == cellCount -1) it overwrites the last cell with content. I can get this to work if I add a blank entry into the xml from which I am populating the dictionary, but that's ugly. Example code would be neat!

  Are there any .NET APis that can read/update the system.webServer node in web.config? I know I can do it via reading/parsing the web.config file as xml but that's awkward. To read/update the system.web node in .NET 2 I can use: HttpModulesSection httpModulesSection = (HttpModulesSection)configuration.GetSection("system.web/httpModules"); But is there any API based way of accessing system.web/modules using .NET 2? I have to reference the .NET 2 version of system.web.configuration because I don't know in advance if my web app will be run on a server with .NET 2 or 3.5. So it is limited to .NET 2 API calls only.   Hello, I have followed the basic GWT tutorial for creating a project in Eclipse. Now, I am trying to build off what I learned in the tutorial. I created a static utility class to perform some database connection logic. However, when I try to compile I get: [ERROR] Line 46: No source code is available for type com.sample.server.ConnectionUtil; did you forget to inherit a required module? Where can I put simple classes that I've created on my own? Do they have to be outside the package structure of the basic module, 'com.sample'? Or do I have to specify a whole new module in the gwt.xml file and inherit from that? There has to be something simple I'm missing.

• Adding subview, gets delayed?

  Hi, i didn't really know how to title this question, but here's a thing that really kills me: In my app i have a UITableView, UISegmentedControl and UINavigationBar. Once UISegmentedControl gets one of its segments selected i want to show a UIActivityIndicatorView on the UINavigationBar and then parse an xml file and present the results in a table. Everything works almost as i want it to, except one thing, the activity indicator view gets added to the uinavigationbar after the parser finishes, even though the method showLoading that adds UIIndicatorView to UINavigationBar gets before parser is initialised. Can anyone explain it? is there something i might be missing? maybe the ui needs to get redrawn? thanks peter

• How do I sync Dreamweaver site definitions across 2 computers?

  I use Dreamweaver on my laptop and Desktop PC and frequently change between them. I keep all my sites synced using Syncplicity (similar to Dropbox, which indecently I also use) I want my site definitions to be synced across the two computers. If I add a new site on one computer I want it to appear on the other one. I know I can export all sites on one computer and then get Syncplicity to sync the files to the other computer at which point I can import them. However this relies on me remembering to do this each time I add a new site, and it's also quite time consuming. As far as I can tell, Dreamweaver (at least upto CS4- not sure about CS5) stupidly stores the site definitions in the registry. I really don't know why they do this- if they stored it in xml files then I could easily sync the information. Does anyone know if what I am asking is possible?

  I am using Maven with Tycho to build an eclipse plugin. Tycho generates the pom.xml file for Maven by inspecting the manifest file of the plugin. Now both the manifest file and the pom file have the version of the plugin and they need to be kept in sync manually. This is because I have done some customization in the generated pom file and cannot overwrite it every time I change the version in the manifest. My question here is, is there a way to keep these versions in sync automatically using Tycho?

  Hi guys I'm developing a google apps solution and I'm building on the tutorial application give by google at http://code.google.com/googleapps/marketplace/tutorial_php.html - the thing is that the example given sets up the application such that the user has to enter in manually the email address or username and then it takes the user through an authentication process whereby it asks the user if they wish to allow the application to be given access to the services mentioned in the manifest.xml file. Isn't there a better way to do this I mean like I want that when the user upon logging into his google apps account just has to click in the application link installed and straight on should be able to enter the application. Can't the process of authentication and all be transparent in the backdrop. I need help on this asap. Thanks a bunch!

  My BizTalk receive XML message as a input message. I am converting that message to HL7 message using Transform in orchestration. Now if input message consists of any empty field in any of the node, the HL7 message breaks up at that postion and also include space in that message. • Searching a table MySQL & PHP.

  I want to be able to search through a MySQL table using values from a search string, from the url and display the results as an XML output. I think I have got the formatting and declaring the variables from the search string down. The issue I have is searching the entire table, I've looked over SO for previous answers, and they all seem to have to declare each column in the table to search through. So for example my database layout is as follows: **filesindex** -filename -creation -length -wall -playlocation First of all would the following be appropriate: $query = "SELECT * FROM filesindex WHERE filename LIKE '".$searchterm."%' UNION SELECT * FROM filesindex WHERE creation LIKE '".$searchterm."%' UNION SELECT * FROM filesindex WHERE length LIKE '".$searchterm."%' UNION SELECT * FROM filesindex WHERE wall LIKE '".$searchterm."%' UNION SELECT * FROM filesindex WHERE location LIKE '".$searchterm."%'"; Or ideally, is there an easier way that involves less hardcoding to search a table. • Can Hibernate default a Null String to Empty String

  In our application we are pulling data from a DB2 mainframe database. If the database has "low values" in a field, hibernate sends a "null" value in the object. This occurs even if the column is defined as "not null". As we are doing XML parsing on this, Castor is having trouble with it. I would like to fix this in Hibernate. Also, all of the hibernate hbm files are generated, so we can't mess with them (they are regened from time to time.) Any way to intercept all Strings and replace nulls with ""?
