• Returning EF entities using WCF - Read only web service / public API

  I'm currently migrating an application from Linq-to-SQL & ASP.net Web Services (asmx) to Entity Framework and WCF. My question is, I have a bunch of POCO classes which i have xml mapping files for (for the linq to sql) I've replaced my linq to sql with an entity framework data model I've got an interface - something like IService - that has all the methods on it that i need my service to implement - for example: Product[] GetProductsByKeyword(string keyword); In the above case, Product is a POCO. I now have them as entities within my ef data model - i'm using .net 4, and could take advantage of poco support, but don't really see the need - This service is strictly read only. What's the best way of returning entities in my WCF service? I want it to support other client platforms, not just .net (so php guys could use it)

  Recently I've bumped into realization/implementation of Singleton design pattern for C++. It has looked in the following way (I have adopted it from real life example): // a lot of methods is omitted here class Singleton { public: static Singleton* getInstance( ); ~Singleton( ); private: Singleton( ); static Singleton* instance; }; From this declaration I can deduce that instance field is initiated on the heap, that means there is a memory allocation. That is completely unclear for me is when does exactly memory is going to be deallocated? Or there is a bug and memory leak? It seems like there is a problem in implementation. PS. And main question how to implement it in the right way?

  I've written program solving bounded producer & consumer problem. While constructing ArrayBlockingQueue I defined capacity 100. I'm using methods take and put inside threads. And I've noticed that sometimes I see put 102 times with any take's between them. Why does it happen? • two classes contain objects of each other

  hi, i hope there's a simple answer to this. without getting too complicated i have two classes. an "Animal" and a "Cell" Cell contains an Animal as a member. Animal has methods that accept Cells in their parameters. i'm just confused as to how i #include each class the others header? i've only ever had to go up a chain of classes and just included the last class header in the next and so on, but this circular situation has me a bit lost. i hope that makes sense, any help greatly appreciated.

• I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around handling the Activity Lifecycle...

  So it seems i've created a fatal flaw and coded an app before understanding/handling rotation/lifecycle events.. Currently, all of my code is in onCreate of each activity. I've read a lot of lifecycle tutorials online, including the official dev guide info, but i'm still having an almost unbelievably hard time trying to wrap my head around the rotation/lifecycle events/methods and when to use them correctly. For example, my app currently has an activity that opens the db, inserts a record, then closes the db.. if i rotate my screen on this activity, the data is re-entered into the db. Using the available lifecycle events (onPause(), onResume(), etc..), how would I prevent this db call from happening again? Would I have to pass a variable through the state saying that the db call has been done, and not to do it again? Thanks in advance..

Now i am using selenium IDE to script the maximum parts in my application to reduce the time of execution(i feel ide execution is faster than test project execution) using gotoif, while, regexp ..etc and would go Selenium RC only for data driven methods and the events which have not been handled by IDE. • Linux - Programmatically write to a proc file

  I have found several examples online where we can create a proc file, assign read and write methods that are called every time the proc file is opened for read or written to. However, I can't seem to find any documentation on how to programatically write to a proc file. Ideally, I would like to add a timestamp with other user details every time the proc file is opened for read or for write. Again, I've found where I can add the read and write functions that are triggered when the proc file is opened, but I can't find documentation on how to actually write to a proc file programatically. This would be different from a regular IO read/write, correct?

• Is there a faster way to download a page from the net to a string?

  I have tried other methods to download info from a URL, but needed a faster one. I need to download and parse about 250 separate pages, and would like the app to not appear ridiculously slow. • Make sure base method gets called in C#

  Can I somehow force a derived class to always call the overridden methods base? public class BaseClass { public virtual void Update() { if(condition) { throw new Exception("..."); // Prevent derived method to be called } } } And then in a derived class : public override void Update() { base.Update(); // Forced call // Do any work } I've searched and found a suggestion to use a non-virtual Update() but also a protected virtual UpdateEx(). It just doesn't feel very neat, isn't there any better way? I hope you get the question and I am sorry for any bad English.

  Some XML::LibXML methods return arrays instead of references to arrays. Instead of doing this: $self->process_items($xml->findnodes('items/item')); I want to do something like: $self->process_items(\$xml->findnodes('items/item')); So that in process_items() I can dereference the original array instead of creating a copy: sub process_items { my ($self, $items) = @_; foreach my $item (@$items) { # do something... } } I can always store the results of findnodes() into an array and then pass the array reference to my own method, but let's say I want to try a reduced version of my code. Is that the correct syntax for passing the method results or should I use something different? Thanks!

  I have a problem with calling soap service from php page. I was implemented two page,first page was created in php, and second page was created in asp.net. In asp.net application I have SOAP service, which methods should be called from php. Origin http://localhost:8080 is not allowed by Access-Control-Allow-Origin.

  I'm using Rails 3. I want to create a select tag with some options grouped and others not grouped. Options would look something like this: Income Auto Fuel Maintenance Home Maintenance Mortgage In this example, Income is not a group, but Auto and Home are. I see three helper methods grouped_options_for_select and grouped_collection_select, option_groups_from_collection_for_select. Is there a way to use a helper to do this or will I have to generate the HTML myself? I imagine I could use two different helpers to create the options and just append the results of both.

• Vim and clang_complete, how to explicitly compile my code

  I use Vim with clang_complete for omnicompletion. The plugin is automatically triggered when I need completion, e.g., after I type . or -> to access an object members or methods (see attached screenshot). The plugin works really nice, however I would need a way to trigger it manually (i.e. to compile my code for syntax checking). This is useful for two reasons: Static syntax checking Clear previous errors which have been fixed (which otherwise will remain in their buffer).   I am trying to write a WPF windows application that dynamically creates a 3 D object for an existing 3D Image. The senerio is as follows. Mark the points randomly on the existing 3D Image. Create a 3D object based on the points already marked. Check the below Sample Screenshots. Screenshot 1 and Screenshot 2 I am successfully able to load the 3D file to the WPF form. And was able to perform the rotation using TrackballDecorator 3D Tools library.   I'm writing a new ASP.NET MVC2 application using Linq to SQL. This application depends on an existing SQL database. I am using attribute-based mapping to map my database fields to my Linq to SQL entities. I also need to make use of Linq to SQL's On[Property]Changed methods so I can perform change-auditing of database tables within my application. Whereas the documentation explains how to do this when using Linq to SQL's ORM and dbml files (i.e. by writing partial classes), it is not clear how to do with when using attribute-based mapping or when using XML-based mapping. It would be very helpful if someone could describe how to do this.

  Hello, I am trying to format a TimeSpan element in the format of "[minutes]:[seconds]". In this format, 2 minutes and 8 seconds would look like "02:08". I have tried a variety of options with String.Format and the ToString methods, but I get a FormatException.   I made patterns: images with the "A" letter of different sizes (from 12 to 72: 12, 14, .., 72) And I tested the method of pattern matching and it gave a good results. One way to select text regions from image is to run that algorithm for all small and big letters and digits of different sizes. And fonts! I don't like it. Instead of it I want to make something like a universal pattern or better to say: scanning image with different window sizes and select those regions where some function (probability of that there is a character at that window) is more than some fixed value. Do you know any methods or ideas to make that function? It must work with original image (grayscale).

  Hi there, What would be the best way to send a complete post to a model in Code Igniter? Methods I know are as follow: Name form elements as array, eg. <input type="text" name="contact[name]"> <input type="text" name="contact[surname]"> and then use: $this->Model_name->add_contact($this->input->post('contact')); The other would be to add each element to an array and then send it to the model as such: <input type="text" name="name"> <input type="text" name="surname"> and $contact_array = array('name' => $this->input->post('name'), 'surname' => $this->input->post('surname')); $this->Model_name->add_contact($this->input->post('contact')); Which one of these would be best practice, and is there a way to directly send a whole POST to a model (or a whole form maybe?)

• Profiling and Graphics.updateDisplay0()

  I am profiling my BlackBerry application (a game) with the options 'In method only' and 'Time including native method'. Under the 'All methods' node (after a decent run of the game) the single most time consuming function is Graphics.updateDisplay0() with over 50% of the run time spent there. I don't quite know what is the purpose of that function or if I can do anything to reduce its processing time, so if anyone can shed some light on the matter, I would be grateful. Because from what I understand with the 'In method only' option, it means there is some processing within that function. ps. there is no information on that function in the documentation.

• How can I find all the supported weights of a Font in Java?

  How can I find all the available font weights for a given font in Java? The TextAttribute for font weight lists 11 different weight constants, way more than just Font.PLAIN and Font.BOLD. I'd like to know which ones actually exist for a given font family, so I can make sure I'm only using weights for which a font face exists. The getAttributes() and getAvailableAttributes() methods in Font will only show me whether or not the Font supports the FONT_WEIGHT attribute, not which weight values it supports. If I just pass in a particular value to see what I get back, I don't have any guarantee that I'll get what I asked for. The TextAttribute class says "The values for WEIGHT, WIDTH, and POSTURE are interpolated by the system, which can select the 'nearest available' font or use other techniques to approximate the user's request."

  I have a voice application that would be much-improved if there was the ability to use a "trigger word" to start recording audio. I don't need a full speech-text engine, just the ability to reliably/efficiently detect the trigger word. I am wondering if there are any specialized speech engines that support this specific use case, or any libraries/methods to developing such a single-purpose detection engine. Ideally I'd like it to work in noisy environments, but it can be trained for a single user's voice. Pointers to research papers / topics would also be appreciated so I know what to ask for.

  As a very novice Java programmer, I probably should not mess with that kind of things. Unfortunately, I'm using a library which have a method that accepts a ByteBuffer object and throws when I try to use it: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NullPointerException: Unable to retrieve native address from ByteBuffer object Is it because I'm not using a non-direct buffer? edit: There's not a lot of my code there. The library I'm using is jNetPcap, and I'm trying to dump a packet to file. My code takes an existing packet, and extract a ByteBuffer out of it: byte[] bytes = m_packet.getByteArray(0, m_packet.size()); ByteBuffer buffer = ByteBuffer.wrap(bytes); Then it calls on of the dump methods of jNetPcap that takes a ByteBuffer.

• Best approach to creating a database driven Java website?

  I'm fairly new to programming and new to java, but I'd like to jump in the deep end with a little database driven website project. I've read quite a lot about requirements in the 'real world' requesting experience with Spring and Hibernate, so I have those installed on netbeans and a project created (if I hit run I get the default spring page). Now I just need a little guidance as to where to start designing my app (please tell me if I'm getting in a bit too over my head for a beginner!). Should I start off with my classes? - create all my classes as they map to my database tables and decide which attributes and methods each will require? Can anyone suggest any good books for maybe.. making a java based website from scratch (i.e. from design right through to deployment) that might be useful for a beginner? Any help appreciated thanks.

I have a rails application developed to spain, therefore, all content is in spanish, so, I have a search box to search in a mysql database, all rows are in spanish, I'd like to improve my search to allow to users to search keywords in singular or plural form, for example: keyword: patatas found: patata keyword: veces found: vez keyword: vez found: veces keyword: actividades found: actividad In english, this could be relatively easy with help of singularize and pluralize methods ... where `searching_field` like '%singularized_keyword%' or `searching_field` like '%pluralized_keyword%' But, for spanish....
