• Infrastructure for high transactional system (language & hosting suggestion help)

  Some of our friends (University students) are trying to develop a twitter type application, I want to plan for at least 1000 transactions per second (I know it's wishful thinking) for initial launch. This involves several people connecting and getting updates and posting (text + images) to site. In the back end db will server the data and also calculates rankings of what to push to user based on complex algorithm on the fly real-time. Our group is familiar with Java and Tomcat/MySQL. We can also easily learn/code in PHP/MySQL. What is the best suited platform for our purpose ? Though Java seem to be easy to implement for us I am afraid that hosting will be a bit difficult. I could find cloud based php hosting services (like rackspace cloudsites) at reasonable cost. Amazon EC2 is a bit over our heads to manage on day-to-day. Also any recommendation on hosting ? (PHP or Java) We don't have millions in seed money but about $20K to start with. Any advice on above or any thing in general approach is much appreciated.

• Windows 2008 and wrong BPL loading [SOLVED]

  I have an application builded with Run-time Packages. When the executable starts it auto loads the required packages (.bpl). Recently we has installed an Windows 2008 R2 server to use as Terminal Services. We maintain some old compiled versions of our application in different paths, like this: c:\app\version_1\common.bpl c:\app\version_1\app.exe c:\app\version_2\common.bpl c:\app\version_2\app.exe Common.bpl is the a run-time package what app.exe depends on. THE PROBLEM: I start "c:\app\version_2\app.exe" and it loads "c:\app\version_2\common.bpl". When I start the "c:\app\version_1\app.exe" it loads the WRONG bpl (from version_2). The path "c:\app\version_2\" isn't at the system search path. At Windows2003 server this problem doesn't occurs. What can I do to solve this? Thanks! I have downloaded the Process Explorer (microsoft sysinternals), and checked the loaded modules of each executable, all they are correct! But I noticed another problem. After start the second version, an entry-not-found-error occurs, telling me what a initialization entry point, of an unit what only exists in one of the versions, could not be found. Something is very strange. The ProcessExplorer is telling me that the process is loading the correct modoles, but when they are running this seems not be happening. Seems the applications are sharing the loaded modules. SOLVED There was a MouseHook using FindVCLWindow, this was generating the AV. Sorry about inconvenience guys, and thanks!

• Make UIViewController outside Navigation Controller

  i have a question for you. I'm working on this app that has a walkthrough/tutorial screens and also login ones. On each of this screens there is a button to skip this part and go directly to use the app, without completing the registration (you know, so that people can test it before signing-in). As you can see i'm using Storyboards. The NowPlaying04 ViewController is actually the app itself. Obviously, when the user will be a registered one, i should also be able to jump right back to that screen, skipping the walkthrough and signin process. The first question is: how is the best way to structure this? The second quesion is: how i can make a ViewController outside that Navigation controller. Cause as you can see now, the NowPlaying04 ViewController inherits the top navigation bar. Which is a thing that i don't want. I don't need that. I hope that you have understood my question. I'll appreciate any help. Programmatically or by dragging stuff around, i'm ok with all the solutions. The important thing is that it works correctly! :-)

• multiple touches: touchend event fired only when a touchmove occurs

  I would like to add some multitouch features to my javascript application when it is accessed from an ios device (and maybe android later). I want to provide a shiftkey-like functionality: the user may hold a button on the screen with one finger, and while this button is pressed, the behavior for a tap action on the rest of the screen is slightly different from the classic tap. The problem i'm running into is that i do not receive any touchend event for the tapping finger unless a touchmove is fired for the first finger holding the shiftkey button. Because the screen is very sensitive, touchmove events gets easily fired and in most cases everything works fine. But when the user's finger is a bit too still, the tapping is not detected until the user moves his finger a bit. This induces a variable 'delay' between the tapping and the action that occurs on the screen (the delay may vary and last a few seconds if the user is very calm). My guess is that this delay will cause the user to tap again and thus fire the action a second time, which is something that i don't want ! You can test it here with your ipad/iphone : http://jsfiddle.net/jdeXH/8/ Try to make the body remain green for a few seconds by holding your finger very still on the cyan div while tapping on the red div. Is this behavior to be expected ? Is there some known workaround for the problem ?   So what would be nice is if you could do something like the following (not necessarily with this format, just the general idea): data Minor = MinorA | MinorB data Major = Minor | MajorB isMinor :: Major -> Bool isMinor Minor = True isMinor _ = False So isMinor MinorA would report True (instead of an error.) At the moment you might do something like: data Major = MinorA | MinorB | MajorB isMinor :: Major -> Bool isMinor MinorA = True isMinor MinorB = True isMinor _ = False It's not terrible or anything, but it doesn't expand nicely (as in if Minor when up to MinorZ this would be terribly clunky). To avoid that problem you can wrap Minor: data Minor = MinorA | MinorB data Major = MajorA Minor | MajorB isMinor :: Major -> Bool isMinor (MajorA _) = True isMinor _ = False But now you have to make sure to wrap your Minors to use them as a Major... again not terrible; just doesn't really express the semantics I'd like very well (i.e. Major can be any Minor or MajorB). The first (legal) example is "Major can be MinorA..." but doesn't have any knowledge of Minor and the second is "Major can be MajorA that takes a Minor..." p.s. No, this isn't really about anything concrete.

• Learning Java Swing (GUI builder or not?)

  Well I know basic Java and wanted to learn Swing so of course looked at the Sun website first, where this tutorial is. I was going to start it but realised it relied heavily on NetBeans, which I'm not sure about. I'm not sure because it's learning that I want to acheive, not a nice looking program. So I thought using NetBeans like this would be great once I know it, but I don't want to be building things without a clue what's going on underneath, and of course this could also cause problems later. My first question is is this the right way to do it, should I try not to rely on an IDE heavily? Looking through questions on the site most people recommend using the Sun tutorial, and I've only seen one answer that agrees with what I'm thinking, and they linked to this resource which looks promising. Or perhaps I'm getting the wrong idea of the Sun tutorial, perhaps it doesn't rely on the IDE, it just seemed like that. My second question is, if you agree with me, what resources (apart from the one above) would you recommend? Thanks for your answers.

• Proper way to reassign pointers in c++

  I want to make sure i have these basic ideas correct before moving on (I am coming from a Java/Python background). I have been searching the net, but haven't found a concrete answer to this question yet. When you reassign a pointer to a new object, do you have to call delete on the old object first to avoid a memory leak? My intuition is telling me yes, but i want a concrete answer before moving on. For example, let say you had a class that stored a pointer to a string class MyClass { private: std::string *str; public: MyClass (const std::string &_str) { str=new std::string(_str); } void ChangeString(const std::string &_str) { // I am wondering if this is correct? delete str; str = new std::string(_str) /* * or could you simply do it like: * str = _str; */ } .... In the ChangeString method, which would be correct? I think i am getting hung up on if you dont use the new keyword for the second way, it will still compile and run like you expected. Does this just overwrite the data that this pointer points to? Or does it do something else? Any advice would be greatly appricated :D

• Can't push to git hub

  I just completed chapter one of the Ruby on Rails Tutorial by Hartl. Posted about one minor hitch previously. Now I started chapter two. I swear I did everything by the book, but now when I try: git push -u origin master I get the following messages after entering my passphrase: ERROR: repository not found fatal: could not read from remote repository Please make sure you have the correct access rights and that the repository exists. When I down loaded heroku tools I think it installed a second version of ruby on my machine. In any case I now have two version listed under All Programs. Could this have screwed thing up? The two versions are Ruby 1.9.2-p290 and 1.9.3-p327. Also when I open the command prompt using 1.9.2 there is a wierd thing at the top before I do anything: 'C:\Program' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. This is then followed by the normal prompt on the next line. I'm wondering if the use of my public keys have some how gotten screwed up. Any help would be appreciated.

  I'm trying to replace Thread.sleep with a java swing timer as I hear that is much better for graphics. Before, I had something set up like this, but it was interfering with the graphics. while(counter < array.size){ Thread.sleep(array.get(counter).startTime); //do first task Thread.sleep(array.get(counter).secondTime); //do second task Thread.sleep(array.get(counter).thirdTime); //do third task counter++ } Now, I'm trying to replace each Thread.sleep with one of these and then I have the actual events that happen after this, but it does not seem to be waiting at all. int test = array.get(counter).time; ActionListener taskPerformer = new ActionListener(){ public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent evt){ } }; Timer t = new Timer(test, taskPerformer); t.setRepeats(false); t.start(); Basically, how do I ensure that the program will wait without giving it any code to execute inside of the timer? Why does the second function return different (incorrect) results, eventhough its basically the same? • How specific do I get in BDD scenarios?

  Take two different ways of stating the same behavior. Option A: Given a customer has 50 items in their shopping cart When they check out Then they will receive a 10% discount on their order Option B: Given a customer has a high volume of items in their shopping cart When they check out Then they will receive a high volume discount on their order The former is far more specific. If someone has some question about exactly when a customer gets a high volume discount or how much to give them, reading this scenario makes it very clear. Serving the purposes of documenting the behavior, it's about as specific as it can be, although any change in those values will require changing the scenario. The second is more generalized and doesn't have the clarity of the first. Automating it would require incorporating the values "50" and "10" in the step implementations. On the other hand, the scenario captures the core business need: a high volume customer gets a discount. If we later decide to use "40" and "15", the scenario doesn't have to change because the core business need hasn't really changed (though the step implementation would). Also, the term "high volume customer" communicates something about why we're giving them the discount. So, which is better? Rather, under what circumstances should I favor the former or the latter?

• List of values as keys for a Map

  I have lists of variable length where each item can be one of four unique, that I need to use as keys for another object in a map. Assume that each value can be either 0, 1, 2 or 3 (it's not integer in my real code, but a lot easier to explain this way) so a few examples of key lists could be: [1, 0, 2, 3] [3, 2, 1] [1, 0, 0, 1, 1, 3] [2, 3, 1, 1, 2] [1, 2] So, to re-iterate: each item in the list can be either 0, 1, 2 or 3 and there can be any number of items in a list. My first approach was to try to hash the contents of the array, using the built in GetHashCode() in .NET to combine the hash of each element. But since this would return an int I would have to deal with collisions manually (two equal int values are identical to a Dictionary). So my second approach was to use a quad tree, breaking down each item in the list into a Node that has four pointers (one for each possible value) to the next four possible values (with the root node representing [], an empty list), inserting [1, 0, 2] => Foo, [1, 3] => Bar and [1, 0] => Baz into this tree would look like this: Grey nodes nodes being unused pointers/nodes. Though I worry about the performance of this setup, but there will be no need to deal with hash collisions and the tree won't become to deep (there will mostly be lists with 2-6 items stored, rarely over 6). Is there some other magic way to store items with lists of values as keys that I have missed?

• .Net file writing and string splitting issues

  I have a requirement where the file should be split using a given character. Default splitting options are CRLF and LF In both these cases I am splitting the line by \r\n and \r respectively. Also I have requirement where any size of file should be processed. (Processing is basically inserting the given string in a file at given position). For this I am reading the file in chunk of 1024 bytes. Then I am applying the string.Split() method. Split() method gives options for ignoring white spaces and none. I have to add back these line break characters to the line. for this I am using a binary writer and I am writing the byte array to the new file. Issue:- 1) When line break is CRLF, and the split option is NONE, while spaces are also added in the splitted array. Second option is given (to ignore white spaces) CRLF works properly. 2)Bit ignoring white space option creates other problems, as I am reading the file byte by byte I can't ignore a white space. 3)When line break characters are other than default(e.g. '|', a null value is prepended to the resulting line. Can anybody give solution to my issues?

• selected option not clearing from memory android

  I have a small random number spinner that when you click gives a random number. I am having two problems. The first is when the main activity loads it displays a random number on the screen without the random number spinner being clicked. I am unsure what to set to false to keep it from opening with the main activity. The second problem is that when you select an option from the spinner it does not clear. Meaning that If you click on option D6 or D20 then you can not click on the same option again until selecting the other option first. Essentially the selection does not clear out of memory after the random number is selected. • LINQ Many to Many With In or Contains Clause (and a twist)

  I have a many to many table structure called PropertyPets. It contains a dual primary key consisting of a PropertyID (from a Property table) and one or more PetIDs (from a Pet table). Next I have a search screen where people can multiple select pets from a jquery multiple select dropdown. Let's say somebody selects Dogs and Cats. Now, I want to be able to return all properties that contain BOTH dogs and cats in the many to many table, PropertyPets. I'm trying to do this with Linq to Sql. I've looked at the Contains clause, but it doesn't seem to work for my requirement: var result = properties.Where(p => search.PetType.Contains(p.PropertyPets)); Here, search.PetType is an int[] array of the Id's for Dog and Cat (which were selected in the multiple select drop down). The problem is first, Contains requires a string not an IEnumerable of type PropertyPet. And second, I need to find the properties that have BOTH dogs and cats and not just simply containing one or the other. Thank you for any pointers.

  I have the below tables. tblInput Id WordPosition Words -- ----------- ----- 1 1 Hi 1 2 How 1 3 are 1 4 you 2 1 Ok 2 2 This 2 3 is 2 4 me tblReplacement Id ReplacementWords --- ---------------- 1 Hi 2 are 3 Ok 4 This The tblInput holds the list of words while the tblReplacement hold the words that we need to search in the tblInput and if a match is found then we need to replace those. But the problem is that, we need to replace those words if any match is found at the beginning. i.e. in the tblInput, in case of ID 1, the words that will be replaced is only 'Hi' and not 'are' since before 'are', 'How' is there and it is not in the tblReplacement list. in case of Id 2, the words that will be replaced are 'Ok' & 'This'. Since these both words are present in the tblReplacement table and after the first word i.e. 'Ok' is replaced, the second word which is 'This' here comes first in the list of ID category 2 . Since it is available in the tblReplacement, and is the first word now, so this will also be replaced. So the desired output will be Id NewWordsAfterReplacement --- ------------------------ 1 How 1 are 1 you 2 is 2 me My approach so far: ;With Cte1 As( Select t1.Id ,t1.Words ,t2.ReplacementWords From tblInput t1 Cross Join tblReplacement t2) ,Cte2 As( Select Id, NewWordsAfterReplacement = REPLACE(Words,ReplacementWords,'') From Cte1) Select * from Cte2 where NewWordsAfterReplacement <> '' But I am not getting the desired output. • can upstart expect/respawn be used on processes that fork more than twice?

  I am using upstart to start/stop/automatically restart daemons. One of the daemons forks 4 times. The upstart cookbook states that it only supports forking twice. Is there a workaround? how it fails If I try to use expect daemon or expect fork upstart uses the pid of the second fork. When I try to stop the job nobody responds to upstarts SIGKILL signal and it hangs until you exhaust the pid space and loop back around. It gets worse if you add respawn. Upstart thinks the job died and immediately starts another one. bug acknowledged by upstream A bug has been entered for upstart. The solutions presented are stick with the old sysvinit, rewrite your daemon, or wait for a re-write. rhel is close to 2 years behind the latest upstart package so by the time the rewrite is released and we get updated the wait will probably be 4 years. The daemon is written by a subcontractor of a subcontractor of a contractor so it will not be fixed any time soon either.

I can browse to http://mysite.com/getstates ok but when I call this function using ajax it is not passing the value of "test" which is "1" to $_POST["test"]. I am new to Drupal so I am positive that I miss something here. I thought I need a new set of eyes.
