• How to add debug assemblies to my Silverlight 2 application?

  So I know now that the debug assemblies have been intentionally left out of the Silverlight runtime to save space. For that reason I get good detailed error messages on my local machine that has the Silverlight SDK on it, but I don't on a computer with the runtime only. I get the ubiquitous, "Debugging resource strings are unavailable." Unfortunately my requirements are a bit unique. I need to include the debug assembly (not sure which one yet) that will give me details of a regular expression error. And so essentially I want to include the dll in the xap if I can. The problem is that I can't seem to do this. I've tried adding the debug dll's as references and setting them to "copy local." And I've tried adding them into the project as content. But in fact, with either method the xap hardly grows in size and the error message doesn't change. Any ideas?

  This question addresses how to register a custom URL protocol to launch an application in response to a link, but I want my handler to serve dynamic content. Essentially, I'm looking to create a web application that runs on the user's machine instead of a web server. I could set up a localhost, but I want to use a "friendly" URL format that the user can reference elsewhere, e.g. a hypothetical cats protocol: cats:fluffy/cheeseburger-consumption-stats How can I accomplish this? • Fastest way to deploy rails apps with Passenger

  I am working on a Dreamhost server with Rails 2.3.5. Every time I make changes to a site, I have to ssh into the site, remove all the files, upload a zip file containing all the new files for the site, unzip that file, migrate the database, and go. Something tells me there's a faster way to deploy rails apps. I am using mac Time Machine to keep track of different versions of my applications. I know git tracks files, but I don't really know how to work with it to deploy my applications, since passenger takes care of all the magic for me. What would be a faster way to deploy my applications (and avoid the downtime associated with my method when I delete all files on the server)? Thanks!

  I am writing an application, similar to Seti@Home, that allows users to run processing on their home machine, and then upload the result to the central server. However, the final result is maybe a 10K binary file. (Processing to achieve this output is several hours.) What is the simplest reliable automatic method to upload this file to the central server? What do I need to do server-side to prevent blocking? Perhaps having the client send mail is simple and reliable? NB the client program is currently written in Python, if that matters.

  I'm trying to load a simple Xml file (encoded in UTF-8): <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <Test/> And save it with MSXML in vbscript: Set xmlDoc = CreateObject("MSXML2.DOMDocument.6.0") xmlDoc.Load("C:\test.xml") xmlDoc.Save "C:\test.xml" The problem is, MSXML saves file in ANSI instead of UTF-8 (despite the original file being encoded in UTF-8). The MSDN docs for MSXML says that save() will write the file in whatever encoding the XML is defined in but this is clearly not working at least on my machine. How can MSXML save in UTF-8?

• Proper way to have an endless worker thread?

  I have an object that requires a lot of initialization (1-2 seconds on a beefy machine). Though once it is initialized it only takes about 20 miliseconds to do a typical "job" In order to prevent it from being re-initialized every time an app wants to use it (which could be 50 times a second or not at all for minutes in typical usage), I decided to give it a job que, and have it run on its own thread, checking to see if there is any work for it in the que. However I'm not entirely sure how to make a thread that runs indefinetly with or without work. Here's what I have so far, any critique is welcomed private void DoWork() { while (true) { if (JobQue.Count > 0) { // do work on JobQue.Pop() } else { System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(50); } } } After thought: I was thinking I may need to kill this thread gracefully insead of letting it run forever, so I think I will add a Job type that tells the thread to end. Any thoughts on how to end a thread like this also appreciated.

  This has to be obtained from a remote machine. The following query works not for SIDs, but for group and account names. "SELECT GroupComponent FROM Win32_GroupUser WHERE PartComponent = \"Win32_UserAccount.Domain='" + accountDomain + "',Name='" + accountName + "'\"" The Win32_Group objects it returns come in the forms of strings, and they only have domain and name (even though Win32_Group has a SID property). I have this sinking feeling I'll have to: Turn the SID into an account name by querying Win32_SID; Perform the query above; Turn each of the resulting group names into SIDs by querying Win32_Group. PLEASE tell me there's a better way.

  All, I have a PHP website written in Zend Framework and MVC. Most of the controller actions check if the request is an Ajax request or not, else they redirect the user to home page. I am thinking about various ways to break that site. I am considering the following scenario: A user creates his own PHP project on his Local machine. User writes a JQuery ajax post request to one of the controllers on my site and tries to post malicious info. Ex: $.ajax({ type: 'POST', url: "https://marketsite/getinfo/getstuff", cache: false, dataType: "html", success: function(html_response){ alert(html_response); }, error: function(xhr,ajaxOptions,errorThrown){ alert(errorThrown); } }); My Question is does "url" attribute in the ajax request above take absolute path? I know it takes relative path. Also, is it possible to break any site by sending such requests? Thanks

• How can I use my multiple cored dedicated server to run my java application?

  I have a game built in a java environment and I use JVM. I have 4 cores @ 2.4Ghz and my server is only using one of those cores... I've tried and searched and I still have no guides to setup multiple cores to run the game like, say 1 core for running the character saving + loading, and 1 core for the server itself, and 1 core for a helper to help other cores that need more power. I don't even know if this is possible but this is all in java the operating machine is windows server 2003 and I've tried so hard I just don't know what to do. May someone please help me! • Whats the best method for queuing time-sensitive messages with PHP/MySQL?

  I'm building an SMS call and response system in a new app that receives a message via an aggregator gateway, checks it for functional keywords (run, stop, ask, etc), then processes it appropriately (save to the database, return an answer, or execute a task based on the users authorization). It's running fine at the moment as there are only a few users, but I figure its going to have more issues as we scale it up. We're currently running it on a single DV machine (mediatemple base dv). My question is this: does it make more sense to set something up like Memcached to run a queue, or a simple database with a daemon running to process each message one by one? I don't have much experience with either, so any advice would be helpful. Since the messaging is somewhat time-sensitive, what would be the fastest and most reliable way to handle this? Also, since we're sending responses, I'll probably need to set up and outbound message queue as well. Would it make sense to use the same concept for both?

• Flex Builder 3 executing old source codes

  I'm facing this problem again and again, but can't find any solution (except mine, which is not as a good one I guess). Don't know why, sometimes Flex Builder executes old source codes after making changes. While debugging I see how it steps through a source (e.g. changing local variables) which does not exist (even if I delete all that block or function). My way to solve that is to delete the project (backing up the source codes of course) and create a new one, add the backed up sources to the project and rebuild. It starts to work as it should work, but this way is not as comfortable, especially if sources are on a remote machine and you need to configure .net back-end. Anyone knows how to solve?

• keep open windows console after a python syntax error

  File associations on my machine (winxp home) are such that a python script is directly opened with the python interpreter. If I double click on a python script a console window runs and every thing is fine - as long as there is no syntax error in the script. In that case the console window opens up for a moment but it is closed immediately. Too fast to read the error message. Of course their would be the possibility to manually open a console window and to execute the script by typing python myscript.py but I am sure that there is a more convenient (i.e. "double click based") solution.

• Is it possible to prevent a locally-running SWF (AS3) from downloading from my website?

  I've got a crossdomain.xml file which allows SWFs running on only a certain few domains to download resources from my domain. However, one simple way around this is for a user to download the SWF to their local machine, and run it there (i.e. by double-clicking on it within Windows Explorer, not by running through http://localhost). It seems that when this happens, the crossdomain.xml file is ignored. I understand that in my actionscript, I can do this: if (Security.sandboxType.indexOf(Security.REMOTE) == -1) // running locally - don't allow However it is incredibly easy for someone to decompile the SWF and simply remove this line. Is it possible to do something on the server side to stop a locally running SWF to download from my site? I tried checking the referrer but this field often isn't populated.   VB.NET: Can the .EXE built by VS2005 be deployed as a standalone EXE? When I change the mode in VS2005 to "Release" and build the solution, the bin\Release directory then contains the solution .EXE file, but also a .pdb, vshost.exe and .xml file. What are these extra files and are they necessary? I copied the .exe file to another machine and it executed properly, but there was a significant delay when it first executed - thereafter it was like any other program. What is the reason for this, and can it be helped? Is it because the other 3 files in the Release folder are not there with it?

  A part of the application that I am working on is a legacy Vb6 Windows forms application. All the files in the project are under source control (VSS) except the Vb6 project file. From what I can establish from the other developers working on the project the reason for this is that the com components used in the projects have different references on each developers machine. I want to move the project files into VSS so that when files are added to the project these can be updated in the project files and other developers (and more importantly an automated build script) can get the latest project files from source safe. Does anyone know if/how I can achieve this in such a way as to not corrupt the references to other com components on different development machines?

  I am developing a application for benchmarking purposes, for which I require to create large number of http connection in a short time, I created a program in java to test how much threads is java able to create, it turns out in my 2GB single core machine, the limit is variable between 5000 and 6000 with 1 GB of memory given to JVM after which it hits outofmemoryerror with heap limit reached. It is suggested around that erlang will be able to generate much more concurrent processes, I am willing to learn erlang if it is capable of solving the problem , although I am interested in knowing can erlang be able to say generate somewhere around 100000 processes which are essentially http requests waiting for responses, in a matter of few seconds without reaching any limit like memory error etc.,

• C# Image.Clone to byte[] causes EDIT.COM to open on Windows XP

  It appears that cloning a Image and converting it to a byte array is causing EDIT.COM to open up on Windows XP machines. This does not happen on a Windows 7 machine. The application is a C# .NET 2.0 application. Does anyone have any idea why this may be happening? • StringBuilder/StringBuffer vs. "+" Operator

  I'm reading "Better, Faster, Lighter Java" (by Bruce Tate and Justin Gehtland) and am familiar with the readability requirements in agile type teams, such as what Robert Martin discusses in his clean coding books. On the team I'm on now, I've been told explicitly not to use the "+" operator because it creates extra (and unnecessary) string objects during runtime. But this article: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/java/library/j-jtp01274.html Written back in '04 talks about how object allocation is about 10 machine instructions. (essentially free) It also talks about how the GC also helps to reduce costs in this environment. What is the actual performance tradeoffs between using "+," "StringBuilder," or "StringBuffer?" (In my case it is StringBuffer only as we are limited to Java 1.4.2.) StringBuffer to me results in ugly, less readable code, as a couple of examples in Tate's book demonstrates. And StringBuffer is thread-synchronized which seems to have its own costs that outweigh the "danger" in using the "+" operator. Thoughts/Opinions?

The package includes a GUI, and when it's installed on a Windows machine, I want the installation to make a folder in "Programs" in the start menu, and make a shortcut there to a pyw script that will start the GUI.   I've got multiple massive (multi gigabyte) datasets I need to import into a Rails app. The datasets are currently each in their own database on my development machine, and I need to read from them and create rows in tables in my Rails database based on the information they contain. The tables in my Rails database will not be exactly the same as the tables in the source databases. What's the smartest way to go about this? I was thinking migrations, but I'm not exactly sure how to connect the migration to the databases, and even if that is possible, is that going to be ridiculously slow?
