• Convert Chrome Bookmark Toolbar Folders to Icons

  So you have your regular bookmarks reduced to icons but what about the folders? With our little hack and a few minutes of your time you can turn those folders into icons too. Condensing the Folders Reducing bookmark folders to icons is a little more tricky than regular bookmarks but not hard to do. Right click on the folder and select “Rename…”. The folder’s name should already be highlighted/selected as shown here. Delete the text…notice that the “OK Button” has become unusable for the moment. Now what you will need to do is: Hold down the “Alt Key” Type in “0160” (without the quotes) using the numbers keypad on the right side of your keyboard Release the “Alt Key” after you have finished typing in the number above Once you have released the “Alt Key” you will notice two things…the “cursor” has moved further into the text area and you can now click on the “OK Button” again. There is our folder after editing. And it works just as well as before but without taking up so much room. Here is how our “iconized” folder looks next to our bookmarks. Perfect! What if you want to reduce multiple folders to icons? Perform the same exact steps shown above for each folder and pack your “Bookmarks Toolbar” full of folder goodness! As seen here the folders will have a little more space between them in comparison with singular bookmarks due to the “blank name” for each folder. For those who may be curious this is what your bookmarks will look like in the “Bookmark Manager Page”. Note: If you export your bookmarks all bookmarks contained in multiple blank name folders will be combined into a single folder. Conclusion With just a little bit of work you can pack a lot of goodness into your “Bookmarks Toolbar”. • Apache + SuExec + php-fpm - how to set them up?

  Hello. I wonder if there is a good guide on how to setup Apache + SuExec + php-fpm? I have a server which I am going to use several separate website. So, I need php to be run as site-owner user. As I can see, php-fpm is a little different from php-fcgi. Is there a need in mod_fcgid from Apache in this case? How to set this all up? For now my site is running Apache + mod_suphp + php-cgi, so... it's good, but a little slow. I want to preserve security and gain an ability to use APC.

• Transparent Technology from Amazon

  Amazon has been making some interesting moves again, this time in the augmented humanity area.  Augmented humanity is about helping humans overcome their shortcomings using technology.  Putting a powerful smartphone in your pocket helps you in many ways like navigating streets, communicating with far off friends, and accessing information.  But the interface for smartphones is somewhat limiting and unnatural, so companies have been looking for ways to make the technology more transparent and therefore easier to use. When Apple helped us drop the stylus, we took a giant leap forward in simplicity.  Using touchscreens with intuitive gestures was part of the iPhone's original appeal.  People don't want to know that technology is there -- they just want the benefits.  So what's the next leap beyond the touchscreen to make smartphones even easier to use? Two natural ways we interact with the world around us is by using sight and voice.  Google and Apple have been using both in their mobile platforms for limited uses cases.  Nobody actually wants to type a text message, so why not just speak it?  Any if you want more information about a book, why not just snap a picture of the cover?  That's much more accurate than trying to key the title and/or author. So what's Amazon been doing?  First, Amazon released a new iPhone app called Flow that allows iPhone users to see information about products in context.  Yes, its an augmented reality app that uses the phone's camera to view products, and overlays data about the products on the screen.  For the most part it requires the barcode to be visible to correctly identify the product, but I believe it can also recognize certain logos as well.  Download the app and try it out but don't expect perfection.  Its good enough to demonstrate the concept, but its far from accurate enough.  (MobileBeat did a pretty good review.)  Extrapolate to the future and we might just have a heads-up display in our eyeglasses. The second interesting area is voice response, for which Siri is getting lots of attention.  Amazon may have purchased a voice recognition company called Yap, although the deal is not confirmed.  But it would make perfect sense, especially with the Kindle Fire in Amazon's lineup. I believe over the next 3-5 years the way in which we interact with smartphones will mature, and they will become more transparent yet more important to our daily lives.  This will, of course, impact the way we shop, making information more readily accessible than it already is.  Amazon seems to be positioning itself to be at the forefront of this trend, so we should be watching them carefully.

• How to check sshd log?

  Hello. I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed with sshd and i can successfully connect to it using login and password. I have configured an RSA key login and now have "Server refused our key" as expected. Ok, now i want to check sshd log in order to fingure out a problem. I have examined /etc/ssh/sshd_config and it have SyslogFacility AUTH LogLevel INFO Ok. I'm looking at /var/log/auth.log and... it's empty O_O. Changing Loglevel to VERBOSE helps nothing - auth.log is still empty. Any hints how i can check sshd log?

• Problem to connect to MySQL server (error #2002) in PHP

  Hello, I installed ZWAMP 1.0.7 (on Windows 7), but I'm having a weird problem. I can't connect to my MySQL server from any PHP script. If I try to use MySQL command line everything works fine but PHPMyAdmin retruns error #2002. I'm not sure whether it's important or not but MySQL server is not able to create socket file. I don't know what's the problem but I think everything is configured in my.cnf properly. Do you have any ideas?

• Unable to create context rendering error whet run OpenGL application

  Hello, I try to run Mesa gears example and I get following error: freeglut (./gears): Unable to create direct context rendering for window 'Gears' This may hurt performance. though the application runs successfully, but I guess that in future I will have much problems with productivity. I run Linux CentOS 5 on WMvare 7. • Boot Problem in Asus EEE PC 1015CX

  I am a newbie to Linux world, although I have previously worked on Ubuntu 11.04 for daily use (Net Access and simple recordings using Audacity). I am not sure, at what level I stand as a newbie. I bought this Asus Eee PC two days back. The model is Asus 1015CX. See the specs here http://www.flipkart.com/asus-1015cx-blk011w-laptop-2nd-gen-atom-dual-core-1gb-320gb-linux/p/itmd8qu4quzu8srr . I created a live USB to install 12.10. The usb booted fine. When I clicked "Try Ubuntu" option, it showed me a black screen with a cursor blinking. I waited for 15 minutes and had to restart using the power button. On clicking the "Install Ubuntu" button, the install process went seamlessly. [I have a Windows7 installed on one of the partitions]. i installed it alongside previous windows installation. The system was then rebooted for the first time. It showed the GRUB menu and I selected the first option Ubuntu. After showing the splash screen for a second, it began showing various messages on a black screen and then it struck on "Stopping Save kernel state message". I had to force shut the system using power button. Sometimes it just gives a blank screen with a cursor blinking and on pressing power button, some messages stating that acpid is doing something and stopping services pops up and the system shuts down. I tried booting with "nomodeset" and other parameters as directed in solution to previous such problems on forums. Also Ctrl+Alt+F1,F2,F3,F4,F5,F6..F12 is not doing anything for me anywhere. At installation, I checked Login automatically option. On booting into recovery several options comes up. Clicking resume just gives me a blank screen with cursor blinking. on dropping to root shell and remounting filesystem as RW, I am able to supply some command that worked for others. startx -- Several messages comes up with last one stating Fatal error: No screen found sudo service lightdm start -- Gives a blank screen with a cursor blinking lspci | grep VGA -- Shows some Intel Integrated Graphic... something I don't remember I had reconfigured xserver-xorg, lightdm, reinstalled ubuntu-desktop, unity. What should I do..?? Will going back to 11.04 work..?? Or I should leave all hopes of running Ubuntu on my netbook. Please help.

Is it some simple configuration i can use for such redirect or i'm doomed to copy-paste a 100+ line configs from tutorials?

• Problem with Jumbo Frames

  Hello, I am trying to set up jumbo frames on my gigabit home LAN but no luck so far. My setup is: * D-Link DIR-655 router, HW Revision A3, Firmware 1.21 EU * Synology DS107+, Firmware 3.0-1337 * Laptop w/ Win7 x64, external PCIx NIC managed by "Generic Marvel Yukon 88E8053 based Ethernet Controller" The router is supposed to support jumbo frames but doesn't feature any relevant setting. I set the Jumbo Packet value to 9000 on both the NIC and the Synobox but it doesn't work, ping -f -l 8972 says "Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set". Is there any other setting I overlooked, the DIR-655 doesn't actually support jumbo frames, or what else could be the problem?

• In the Cloud, Everything Costs Money

  I’ve been teaching my daughter about budgeting. I’ve explained that most of the time the money coming in is from only one or two sources – and you can only change that from time to time. The money going out, however, is to many locations, and it changes all the time. She’s made a simple debits and credits spreadsheet, and I’m having her research each part of the budget. Her eyes grow wide when she finds out everything has a cost – the house, gas for the lawnmower, dishes, water for showers, food, electricity to run the fridge, a new fridge when that one breaks, everything has a cost. She asked me “how do you pay for all this?” It’s a sentiment many adults have looking at their own budgets – and one reason that some folks don’t even make a budget. It’s hard to face up to the realities of how much it costs to do what we want to do. When we design a computing solution, it’s interesting to set up a similar budget, because we don’t always consider all of the costs associated with it. I’ve seen design sessions where the new software or servers are considered, but the “sunk” costs of personnel, networking, maintenance, increased storage, new sizes for backups and offsite storage and so on are not added in. They are already on premises, so they are assumed to be paid for already. When you move to a distributed architecture, you'll see more costs directly reflected. Store something, pay for that storage. If the system is deployed and no one is using it, you’re still paying for it. As you watch those costs rise, you might be tempted to think that a distributed architecture costs more than an on-premises one. And you might be right – for some solutions. I’ve worked with a few clients where moving to a distributed architecture doesn’t make financial sense – so we didn’t implement it. I still designed the system in a distributed fashion, however, so that when it does make sense there isn’t much re-architecting to do. In other cases, however, if you consider all of the on-premises costs and compare those accurately to operating a system in the cloud, the distributed system is much cheaper. Again, I never recommend that you take a “here-or-there-only” mentality – I think a hybrid distributed system is usually best – but each solution is different. There simply is no “one size fits all” to architecting a solution. As you design your solution, cost out each element. You might find that using a hybrid approach saves you money in one design and not in another. It’s a brave new world indeed. So yes, in the cloud, everything costs money. But an on-premises solution also costs money – it’s just that “dad” (the company) is paying for it and we don’t always see it. When we go out on our own in the cloud, we need to ensure that we consider all of the costs.

In the last tw week, when i saw with MPC-HC (media player classic home cinema) some "justyfied" episodes, my F-Secure Client Security antivirus software alert-me that there is a threat in A0027132.exe file (the number still chanhe and increase each time, 3, that the antivir found a new threat). All this three threat are now quaratined and the file are: 1) C:/System Volume Information/_restore/{72AACB12-6526-40F2-81D7-69DF5809DD8A}\A0027132.exe 2) D:/System Volume Information/_restore/{72AACB12-6526-40F2-81D7-69DF5809DD8A}\A0027133.exe 3) D:/System Volume Information/_restore/{72AACB12-6526-40F2-81D7-69DF5809DD8A}\A0027134.exe the three threat are recognized like: 1) Backdoor.Generic.360086 2) Trojan.Packed.8707 2) Trojan.Packed.8807 The F-secure and the OS are both udpated at the last release/virus definition. • Mac Screenshot of a Specific Window without Using the Mouse/Click

  Hello, I've been researching for a day or two but can't find a method to take a screenshot of a specific window (possibly the only window) open at a specific time using an Apple script. Currently I have the script execute screencapture -T1 ~/Desktop/screenshot.png But what I want is really screencapture -wx -T1 ~/Desktop/screenshot.png But when I use -wx, it waits for a mouse click on the window. Are there any utilities, built in or not, that will allow me to do this? Thank you so much! (I'm sorry if this belongs on Stack Overflow, can someone move it if it does. It kind of overlaps both super user and stack overflow.) Edit: The windows alternative that I'm looking for on a Mac is the keyboard shortcut: Alt + PrntScrn

• AT&T - Customer service hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

  Okay, I'm a separated 2 time Iraq war veteran, living in Germany Supporting the military. About a year and a hald ago I bought an iPhone 4 off a guy from Craigslist. I thought the phone was unlocked, but when I got to Germany I realized it was not. I called AT&T and they told me that due to the contract with Apple they could not unlock any iPhone period. After the lawsuit with Apple, they started unlocking iPhones. So Today I called up their customer support and asked if they could unlock my phone. They said that they would only do it if I were a previous customer, could provide the information from the person that I had bought it from, or if I bought one at cost.-note, it has a baseband that is not able to be "unlocked" by software.Hello I already own the device, and a year and a half ago I bought it off someone that couldn't afford it... so no, I don't have the at&t account information from him. Just another example of why I won't ever use AT&T again. and I still have this iPhone that I have to jail break, and can't use a a phone. STAY AWAY FROM AT&T. They don't know the meaning of customer service!

• Displays tabs in Firefox 3.6 across multiple rows?

  Hello, After upgrading to Firefox 3.6, I noticed that there no longer seems to be a way to have tabs all displayed in several rows when there are too many to fit in the window: http://www.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/firefox_tabs_multiple_rows-500x179.jpg I find it very inconvenient to have to click on the down arrow at the far-right side to go through the list of open tabs. The TabMixPlus add-on is incompatible with ReloadEvery 3.6.2, so that's not a good solution either. Does someone know if it's possible to either configure FireFox 3.6 to go back to the previous way of displaying multiple tabs, or if there's an add-on that's compatible with ReloadEvery that would do the trick? • AWStats on Plesk consumes all of CPU and crashes server - how do you disable plesk.

  Hello, I have Plesk 9.0.1 running on a Red Hat server. Every week or so at about 4:10am the server locks up. At this time the server CPU usage shhots from 4% to 90% at the same time as a mass of awstats.pl processes start (I can't see how many as my datat only shows the top 30 processes, but all of these are awstats.pl). I turned off awstats through the Plesk control panel for all but 5 domains but I still get 90% CPU usage and at least 30 instances of awstats.pl happening at 4:10am as usual. Does anyone know why this may be? Does anyone know how to disable awstats (I have stats covered using piwik)? Thanks

• Groups issue on Ubuntu

  Hello, I am member of couple of groups lets say Master, Student, Web. The problem is that by default whatever I do is first created under student group. I need to set it so it is created with Web group. Folder www/ where I need to write file is already mode 770. But because it picks up my student group it does not allow me to write to that folder. Is there any way to change the group that I create files under. If I execute groups it lists all groups so I am member of correct group I just cant write to the folder. Anyone?

• Find a Faster DNS Server with Namebench

  One way to speed up your Internet browsing experience is using a faster DNS server. Today we take a look at Namebench, which will compare your current DNS server against others out there, and help you find a faster one. Namebench Download the file and run the executable (link below). Namebench starts up and will include the current DNS server you have configured on your system. In this example we’re behind a router and using the DNS server from the ISP. Include the global DNS providers and the best available regional DNS server, then start the Benchmark. The test starts to run and you’ll see the queries it’s running through. The benchmark takes about 5-10 minutes to complete. After it’s complete you’ll get a report of the results. Based on its findings, it will show you what DNS server is fastest for your system. It also displays different types of graphs so you can get a better feel for the different results. You can export the results to a .csv file as well so you can present the results in Excel. Conclusion This is a free project that is in continuing development, so results might not be perfect, and there may be more features added in the future. • Changing Palette for Day/Light Mode using GIMP

  Hello, Suppose I've a picture, which want to achieve day/light mode by changing 8bpp color palette. If I want the pixel index of my picture is always fixed for both day mode and night mode. For example, the 1st pixel index is 100. Which I can look up index 100 in day mode palette and night mode palette. How can I use GIMP to do so? My goal is to not update my pixel index of my picture. Also, as you see in two palette, they are not one one mapping. That is index 1 of the day mode palette and index 1 of the night mode palette may not used in the same pixel of the picture, how can I tackle this problem? Actually, my use case is as follow I want to use one 8bpp picture to achieve day/night mode by update only the color palette (without updating the pixel index). The advantage is I only have to prepare 2 256 byte palette rather than saving 2 big pictures in my limited data ram. Thanks a lot

• Extracting metadata from flac header in linux

  Hello. I recently (and accidentally) wiped a hard-drive which should NOT have been formatted. Thankfully, PhotoRec was able to recover some of the most important files from the disk. Part of those files include a large music collection of flac files. I've placed these in a folder named 'FLAC' that looks like this: [Start of FLAC Folder] f11655088.flac f11698672.flac ... (around 2,000 files total) f291142600.flac [End of FLAC Folder] I'm running a livecd to rescue this data. I have access to a standard terminal in Ubuntu 10.10. I've noticed that the music player in linux will display the song title when I open any of these songs. My goal is to automatically extract the song title from these files and update their names from f12313512.flac to 'Libera - Rebirth.flac' - or whatever the song title happens to be. Thanks in advance for suggestions on how I might accomplish this!

• Knowledge Transfer without a Plan

  Hello...We are doing work for a particular client managing their CRM implementation. (The CRM itself is a product which has been largely customized to suit my client's needs). Now, they want us to manage the Oracle batch jobs/ETL as well. And for this, they are ready to provide us with Knowledge Transfer. (The Oracle batch jobs/ETL is managed in-house by the client now). After much persuasion, I got one of the Project Lead (designation-wise) to email the client asking for a KT Plan. (The Project Lead kept saying that they have never had KT plans before and all that for which I offered I will draft a template and even that was rejected!). Email from us to them - Can you please share with us the KT Plan? Response from them - Not sure what is expected from my side? The KT is planned for tomorrow from 11 am onwards where Functional knowledge of existing ETL Data migration package will be shared. How do you handle such a client? Most likely what is going to happen is this. The person who is giving the KT will say that I have given complete Knowledge Transfer and we will go back and say that "No, this was not covered. For this, they provided an overview alone and left it at that!" and so on... My Project Lead also did not respond to that email. He just said that the meeting is scheduled to happen at 11 AM (basically repeating whatever the email said and left for the day!). What could I possibly do? PS: Look for another job is a very helpful answer, but I am not looking for it. :-)

• Such thing as a free lunch

  There is a lot of hard work goes on in Red Gate, no doubt. And then there are things we're asked to get involved with, that aren't hard and don't feel much like work. What? Give up our free lunch at Red Gate for. a free lunch in a pub? Within an hour, myself and a colleague are at the Railway Vue pub in nearby Impington. This is all part of Red Gate's aim to hire more Software Engineers and Test Engineers, to help Red Gate grow into one of the greatest software companies in the world (it's already the best small software development company in the UK). Phase one then - buy lunch for Cambridge. Seriously, not just the targeted engineers, but for anyone who could print the voucher and make it to the nearest of the venues, two of which happen to be pubs. We're here to watch people happily eat a free pub lunch at Red Gate's expense. We also get involved and I swear I didn't order a beer with the food but the landlord says I clearly did and I'm not one to argue. Red Gate are offering a free iPad to anyone that comes to interview for a Software Engineer or Test Engineer role. We speak to a few engineers who are genuinely interested. We speak to a couple of DBA's too, and encourage them to make speculative applications - no free iPad on offer for them, but that's not really the point. The point is, everyone should apply to work here! It's that good. We overhear someone ask if 'these vouchers really work?' They do. There's no catch. The free IPad? Again, no catch. If that's what it takes to get talented engineers through our doors for an interview, then that's all good. Once they see where we work and how we work, we think they'll want to come and work with us. The following day, Red Gate decides to repeat the offer, and that means more hard work, this time at The Castle pub. Another landlord that mishears 'mineral water' and serves me a beer. There are many more people clutching the printed vouchers and they all seem very happy to be getting a free lunch from Red Gate. "Come and work for us" we suggest, "lunch is always free!" So if you're a talented engineer, like free lunches and want a free iPad, you know what to do.

• What is the best MTA setup for a home/laptop computer (*not* server)?

  Hello, What is a good MTA (e.g. Postfix or something else) setup for a home computer behind a NAT, or a laptop that is not always online? I've read a lot of Postfix tutorials on how to set it up this way or that, but they are usually geared towards computers that are servers ie they have a static IP have a domain name are always connected to the same network My requirements are, I guess: Ability to redirect mail for local users to another server of my choosing. No listening for incoming SMTP connections - outgoing only Ability to route outgoing mail via an external SMTP server with authentication (and perhaps encryption) If not Postfix, I need an MTA which can queue up mails in case it temporarily has no internet connection.
