  As noted by others, in Java, with the default W3C DOM libraries, one is required to use the Document object a factory to elements, i.e.: import org.w3c.dom.Document; import org.w3c.dom.Element; Document d; Element e; e = d.createElement("tag"); Why is that necessary? Why conceptually a method can't create an XML element without knowing all of the target document? Why I can't just instantiate using 'new' or something to that effect?

  What is a good tool to see the differences between 2 tables (or even better, the datasets returned by 2 queries). EDIT: I'm not interested in the schema changes. Just assume that the schemas are the same. background as to why: I'm porting some legacy code which can fill a database with some pre-calced data. The easiest way to see if I got everything right, is to check the output of the old program, with the new one. I was thinking that if there is some kind of 'diff' tool for databases, this might be great.

• On Windows 2008 R2, how do I back up DHCP if the DHCP .mdb database is always busy?

  I get this from my backup software. C:\WINDOWS\system32\dhcp\dhcp.mdb : The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. C:\WINDOWS\system32\dhcp\j50.log : The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. C:\WINDOWS\system32\dhcp\j50tmp.log : The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. C:\WINDOWS\system32\dhcp\tmp.edb : The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. My questions: Should I be doing a manual backup of DHCP via command line tools or maybe with MMC, Action, Backup before I run my backup? Is the %SystemRoot%\System32\DHCP\Backup directory always kept up to date? (which does get backed up by backup software) I'm answering my own question but the registry key is set up for 3c, 60 minutes, I believe. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DHCPServer\Parameters\BackupInterva This is not the included backup software for Windows. It is another product, but I have seen this with every backup software I've ever used.

• Can I Always debug multiple instances of a same object that is of type thread with GDB?

  program runs fine. When I put a breakpoint a segmentation fault is generated. Is it me or GDB? At run time this never happens and if I instantiate only one object then no problems. Im using QtCreator on ubuntu x86_64 karmic koala. UPDATE1: I have made a small program containing a simplified version of that class. You can download it at: example program simply put a breakpoint on the first line of the function called drawChart() and step into to see the segfault happen UPDATE2: This is another small program but it is practically the same as the mandlebrot example and it is still happening. • JPA DAO integration test not throwing exception when duplicate object saved?

  I am in the process of unit testing a DAO built with Spring/JPA and Hibernate as the provider. Prior to running the test, DBUnit inserted a User record with username "poweruser" -- username is the primary key in the users table. • NHibernate correct way to reattach cached entity to different session

  I'm using NHibernate to query a list of objects from my database. After I get the list of objects over them I iterate over the list of objects and apply a distance approximation algorithm to find the nearest object. I consider this function of getting the list of objects and apply the algorithm over them to be a heavy operation so I cache the object which I find from the algorithm in HttpRuntime.Cache. After this point whenever I'm given the supplied input again I can just directly pull the object from Cache instead of having to hit the database and traverse the list. My object is a complex object that has collections attached to it, inside the query where I return the full list of objects I don't bring back any of the sub collections eagerly so when I read my cached object I need lazy loading to work correctly to be able to display the object fully. Originally I tried using this to re-associate my cached object back to a new session _session.Lock(obj, LockMode.None); However when accessing the page concurrently from another instance I get the error Illegal attempt to associate a collection with two open sessions I then tried something different with _session.Merge(obj); However watching the output of this in NHProf shows that it is deleting and re-associating my object's contained collections with my object, which is not what I want although it seems to work fine. What is the correct way to do this? Neither of these seem to be right.

  I am trying to uninstall Exchange 2010, before installing a new instance of Exchange 2010 SP1 on a different server. (Our production Exchange server is 2003) We have met all of the Mailbox uninstall prereqs except for the following: Error: Uninstall cannot continue. Database 'Public Folder Database 1579722947': The public folder database "Public Folder Database 1579722947" contains folder replicas. Before deleting the public folder database, remove the folders or move the replicas to another public folder database. Recommended Action: We have been able to delete all Public Folders in the 2010 storage group except for the one (previously replicated) folder - "Internet Newsgroups". For example, I would like to know that nA (node-17) produces for nC (exists on node-16). But I don't need to know that nB produces for nC, since they exist in the same localNodes list.

  Hi, I found out that Oracle Database 10g and 11g treat the following PL/SQL block differently (I am using scott schema for convenience): DECLARE v_ename bonus.ename%TYPE; BEGIN SELECT b.ename INTO v_ename FROM bonus b JOIN emp e ON b.ename = e.ename JOIN dept d ON d.deptno = e.deptno WHERE b.ename = 'Scott' FOR UPDATE OF b.ename; END; / While in 10g (10.2) this code ends successfully (well NO_DATA_FOUND exception is raised but that is expected), in 11g (11.2) it raises exception "column ambiguously defined". And that is definitely not expected. It seems like it does not take into account table alias because I found out that when I change the column in FOR UPDATE OF e.empno (also does not work) to e.mgr (which is unique) it starts working. So is this some error in 11g? Any thoughts?

  I have a few dozen excel files which are all of the same format (i.e. 4 worksheets per Excel file). I need to combine all the files into 1 master file which must have just 2 of the 4 worksheets. The corresponding worksheets from each Excel file are named exactly the same as are the column headers. While each file is structured the same, the information within sheet 1 and 2 (for example) is different. So it can’t be combined into one file with everything in one sheet! I've never used VBA before and I'm wondering where I might start this task!

  A colleague is adding a bit mask to all our database tables. In theory this is so we can track certain properties of each row across the entire system. For example... Is the row shipped with the system or added by the client once they've started using the system Has the row been deleted from the table (soft deletes) Is the row a default value within a set of rows Is this a good idea? Are there other uses where this approach would be beneficial? My preference is these properties are obviously important, and having a dedicated column for each property is justified to make what is happening clearer to fellow developers.
