• Remotely connecting to a Hyper-V hosted VM's console.

  Hi everyone. I've just managed to successfully move an aging beige box into a Hyper-V virtual machine. We used to use the beige box by walking over and sitting at the computer itself, but we can't do that so easily when its inside the Hyper-V system. Is there a way please to access the VM's console from a workstation running XP Pro? Please note that its an obscure OS running inside the VM, so installing a VNC or similar service inside the VM is not an option. Many thanks.

• cannot connect to MS FTP 7.5 on Windows 2008 on Amazon EC2 instance

  I have just installed the MS FTP 7.5 upgrade on my Windows 2008 Server (Service Pack 2) running on an Amazon EC2 instance. In the FTP Firewall Support settings for the server in IIS Manager I have set up the passive port range 45001 - 45005 and also set the External Firewall IP address to match the assigned Amazon Elastic IP address. Using the AWS Console I changed the Security Group for the server to allow access to the server through ports 21 and 45001 through 45005. Using an FTP client (either the command line FTP client or Windows Explorer) on the Amazon server I can connect to the FTP server but I cannot connect with an external FTP client. When I checked to see which ports were open on the server using Shields Up it shows that port 21 is open but ports 45001 to 45005 are closed. I assume I'm missing something. Any help greatly appreciated.

Error: HR_51118_HRPROC_ERR_ON_ASG ASGNO 1115 APP-PAY-51118: Error was encountered when processing assignment 1115 HR_51119_HRPROC_ERR_OCC_ON_ET ETNAME: Garnishment 3 APP-PAY-51119: Error was encountered when processing Element Type Garnishment 3 HR_6881_HRPROC_ORA_ERR SQLERRMC ORA-01403: No data found SQL_NO 520 TABLE_NAME pay_input_values_f APP-PAY-06881:Error ORA-01403: no data found has occured in table pay_input_values_f at location 520 This issue was logged in Bug 14679161 - QUICK PAY ERROR AFTER RUP (2012) AND WAGE ATTACHMENT UPGRADE APP-PAY-06881. • MySQL port 3306 blocked in csf yet can still telnet to port 3306 from external host

  We have a Centos 6 VPS that was recently migrated to a new machine within the same web hosting company. It's running WHM/cPanel and has csf/lfd installed. csf is set up with mostly vanilla config. I'm no iptables expert, csf has not let me down before. If a port isn't in the TCP_IN list, it should be blocked on the firewall by iptables. My problem is that I can telnet to port 3306 from an external host, yet I think iptables ought to be blocking 3306 because of csf's rules. We are now failing a security check because of this open port. (this output is obfuscated to protect the innocent: www.ourhost.com is the host with the firewall problem) [root@nickfenwick log]# telnet www.ourhost.com 3306 Trying 158.255.45.107... Connected to www.ourhost.com. Escape character is '^]'. HHost 'nickfenwick.com' is not allowed to connect to this MySQL serverConnection closed by foreign host. So the connection is established, and MySQL refuses the connection due to its configuration. I need the network connection to be refused at the firewall level, before it reaches MySQL. Using WHM's csf web UI I can see 'Firewall Configuration' includes a fairly sensible TCP_IN line: TCP_IN: 20,21,22,25,53,80,110,143,222,443,465,587,993,995,2077,2078,2082,2083,2086,2087,2095,2096,8080 (lets ignore that I could trim that a little for now, my concern is that 3306 is not listed in that list) When csf is restarted it logs the usual slew of output as it sets up iptables rules, for example what looks like it blocking all traffic and then allowing specific ports like SSH on 22: [cut] DROP all opt -- in * out * 0.0.0.0/0 -> 0.0.0.0/0 [cut] ACCEPT tcp opt -- in !lo out * 0.0.0.0/0 -> 0.0.0.0/0 state NEW tcp dpt:22 [cut] I can see that iptables is running, service iptables status returns a long list of firewall rules. • Active Directory theme policies

  Hey, I'm currently managing a terminal server in a domain. As the TS-service just got installed, previous users (I logged in with every user once to test it and set up a few things) use the default windows 2008 theme. New users automatically use the fancy Aero theme. Is there a way to push the Aero theme to all current users? I currently have something like this in my policies: However, when logging in with a user, the theme is not changed. Only if I disable "prohibit access to the control panel", the theme can be changed (doesn't seem to change automatically). But this gives them access to every other control panel feature as well. And giving users only access to "desk.cpl" CP-applet, gives them an access error as well when attempting to change the theme. Another question: can I, as admin, take over and/or log in as another user when that user is not logged in? Thanks

  I'm a software developer and don't have much experience as a sysadmin. I developed a web app and was considering buying a server and hosting the web app on it. Is this a huge undertaking for a web developer? What's the level of difficulty of maintaining a server and keeping up with the latest security patches and all that kind of fun stuff. I'm a single user, and not planning to sell the service to others. Can someone also recommend an OS for my case, and maybe some good learning resources that's concise and not too overwhelming.

• Can't get lines around table borders/cells [migrated]

  I have several web pages containing tables, for which I'd like to have line-borders around the tables and the cells. In fact, some of these pages existed for several years already, and rendered acceptly in IE6, IE7. We switched about 6 months ago to a completely different set of style sheets to change our site look and feel. We also switched to "modern" browsers such as IE8 (and because I couldn't stop Vista) to IE9. Now the borders don't render at all. I spent a day fighting with this about a month ago, and failed to fix it. It seemed that I could reduce the page down to just the barest table and IE8 would still not render the border. I think I decided IE8 was just buggy, but I'm not an HTML expert so it is more likely that I'm buggy. (I'm just getting back to this; I'll go see if I can find that reduced page). • Heartbeat won't start up from a cold boot when a failed node is present

  I currently have two ubuntu servers running Heartbeat and DRBD. Let's say one node is down... The servers are directory connected with a 1000Mbps cross over cable on eth1 and have access to a IP camera LAN on eth0 The node that is still functioning won't start up heartbeat and provide access to the drbd resource. I have to manually restart heartbeat by "sudo service heartbeat restart" to get everything up and running. How can I get it to start fine from a cold start? • How to fill in the network line in the ubuntu interfaces config file?

  I have to configure an ubuntu hardy server network interface. The service hoster told me that this is the network data for the machine: IP Range: 111.111.200.74 to 111.111.200.78 Netmask: 255.255.255.248 Broadcast: 111.111.200.79 Gateway: 111.111.200.73 Subnet: 111.111.200.72/29 I am only using the first IP address. I will update the /etc/hosts file with 111.111.200.74, but I am still unsure how the /etc/network/interfaces file should be. This is my plan: auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 111.111.200.74 netmask 255.255.255.248 network 111.111.200.??? broadcast 111.111.200.79 gateway 111.111.200.73 As you can see I don't know how to build the network line. How would I calculate the data for the network line and what is the result? (I changed the first 2 octets of the subnet, they are not "111.111" in the real setup.)

• Free DNS software with failover support?

  I'm looking for DNS software that can accomplish the following: Check health of all A records at set intervals If server is unresponsive after multiple successive checks, replace A record with a working server When a server is down, check it periodically. Once it's up, restore normal A records Here's an equivalent I thought of: Run DNS servers with very low TTL (minutes) Use a cron job to periodically query all webservers Use sed to replace A records if need be, and then restart DNS server I have a hard time believing there isn't already something that can accomplish the above. I'm not looking for a paid service, and I'm restricted to anything I can run with root access to a VPS. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!

• Coldfusion multiserver instance hangs

  I have a coldfusion 8 multiserver setup with IIS in Windows 2008 Standard SP2 and when one instance "hangs" (I can't connect to the instance from fusion reactor) the web server throws a "503 service unavailable". The remains instance seems to works ok in fusion reactor but the website have only the 503. I have to restart jvm processes and IIS to get the website work again. The jvm processes have the option -Xmx2048m and the instanaces have 2.5Gb allocated. Maybe the jvm process reach the 2Gb limit and stop working? Can be a problem between IIS and CF instances? I'm new to CF debugging process, how can I find why the instance hangs? Thanks

  I am a newbie in content management systems. I would need a CMS that can transfer content by XML or JSON to a client. It is ok if the CMS can also manage HTML websites, but the priority is on the data transfer over a web service. Which is the best CMS to use here? I want to avoid spending endless hours learning all the big CMS systems just to find out that they don't support this feature or that it's badly integrated. Thanks.

• System says memory controller not available and doesn't boot?

  Hello everybody, Recently I have had a MainBoard-problem. I've send my mainboard to service and today I got it back from the company. It is a Foxconn 520a mainboard. Now I have installed my exchanged mainboard. But now I have a problem. My system boots until the device list with IRQ entries appear. The system says "Verifying DMI-pool-data..." and nothing happens. The IRQ-device list shows that the memory-controller is not available. All other devices have got an IRQ. Bus No. Device No. Func No. Vendor/Device Class Device Class IRQ 0 0 0 10DE 0547 0500 Memory Controller NA Do you have any ideas where the problem could be? I already have disconnected all unnecessary devices like the hard disks. Perhaps it is a BIOS problem, but I don't know where I should look. Would be nice if there is any advice, Greetings, Martin

• Connecting FreeNAS 8 to Mac OS X Lion LDAP Server

  I currently have Mac OS X Lion Server running from a MacMini and want to use it purely as an LDAP server for authentication for FreeNAS 8. I have FreeNAS setup and running on a VM, all features working correctly and as expected however I cannot connect to my LDAP server (MacMini). Error message; **Nss_ldap: could not search LDAP server – server is unavailable** For LDAP service settings in FreeNAS, I know my Hostname and Base DN are correct (exact copies of what I set originally and ones that are shown in server:open directory overview) however I am unsure what to enter for Root bind DN, password and Suffix’s. I have researched into where I can find these out and other than following the FreeNAS examples it appears there is a way to find out within the Server Workgroup Manager specific to my settings – however this function is unavailable to me and cannot be ‘ticked’ to view for some strange reason. Some forums explain how Root bind DN should be uid=admin, dc=… and others cn=admin, dc=… – I’m rather confused and would appreciate your help or advice with this.

  I'm working on a corporate desktop (still) running Windows XP SP2. I recently received a new PC and am reinstalling all my tools. Something is different about this one in that it won't let me install Powershell 2.0. When I do, I get a popup: You do not have permission to update Windows XP. Please contact your system administrator. This also occurs for other installs, like Service Pack 3 and Windows Installer 4.5. I'm aware this PC is under group policy restrictions, but I haven't narrowed down what restriction is preventing this install so that I can have the appropriate support team resolve it. What setting could be responsible for this?

• Replication from OSX OpenDirectory to OpenLDAP

  I have an OpenDirectory server running on an OSX Server machine, and I'd like to increase the reliability of the service by having a slave server. The problem is, I only have 1 OSX Server but I have plenty of Linux servers available. I'm happy with Apple's tools that integrate with OpenDirectory, but given Apple's recent discontinuation of the XServe, I'm not particularly interested in continuing with Apple hardware. I remember hearing that OpenDirectory is (now-distantly) based off the OpenLDAP code base; is there any way I could replicate from OpenDirectory to OpenLDAP instead of having to purchase another OSX server?

• Two different domains as one user session in Google Analytics

  I have two websites that are run as the same service. Each domain offers articles from a different market. At the top of each page the two domains are shown as menu options. If a user clicks one they can switch to the other domain. See here: http://www.cgtag.com Each domain has a different Google Analytics account, and when a user switches domains Google is counting this as a new session. It's listing the other domain as the "referral" for that new session. When the user switches back to the first domain Google is counting this as a returning visitor. This is messing up my reports. Showing returning visitors values that are higher than reality. It's also increasing hits on landing pages when the user switches, and listing the other domain as a referral site. I've found tips on how to list two domains as one website, but that results in merging the data. I want to keep the two domains separate so that I can track each ones performance, but I don't want to count domain changes as new sessions. Maybe something like treating the two domains as subdomains.

This works very fine and messages are received normally. What I want to ask about is, am I able to use this service to send SMS messages to an international number? What about the country code? How will I add it and the format needs ten digits only? Thanks

• How to Automatically Create Home Directory for Active Directory User on Solaris (using PowerBroker)

  I have a number of existing users in Active Directory that need a home directory created. They don't log directly in to Solaris but into a service running on that box. If I login as them their home directory gets created and then they can login. This is the same for new users too! As there are a lot of users, I need a way to automate this so new users and existing users have it created automatically. Is this possible??
