• allowing 2 VM's to communicate RED HAT 64 bit

  My physical PC is running 2 VMs on virtualbox. Both of the VM's are linux 64 bit. I am going through this tutorial: http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/rhel-centos-fedoracore-linux-network-card-configuration/ in order to expose both of their IP's so that they can speak to each other. Mike Schwager November 25, 2009 at 10:55 pm Whoops! In section 3, you forgot about editing /etc/hosts. I believe RedHat comes complete with the system’s host ip address set up in /etc/hosts. Don’t forget to give it a look. I agree with Mike because after I looked into the /etc/hosts files, it has just default localhost stuff in it. How should I reconfigure the hosts file?

• Building Web Applications with ACT and jQuery

  My second talk at TechEd is focused on integrating ASP.NET AJAX and jQuery features into websites (if you’re interested in Silverlight you can download code/slides for that talk here). The content starts out by discussing ScriptManager features available in ASP.NET 3.5 and ASP.NET 4 and provides details on why you should consider using a Content Delivery Network (CDN).  If you’re running an external facing site then checking out the CDN features offered by Microsoft or Google is definitely recommended. The talk also goes into the process of contributing to the Ajax Control Toolkit as well as the new Ajax Minifier tool that’s available to crunch JavaScript and CSS files. The extra fun starts in the next part of the talk which details some of the work Microsoft is doing with the jQuery team to donate template, globalization and data linking code to the project. I go into jQuery templates, data linking and a new globalization option that are all being worked on. • Cannot access virtual machine via ping from the physical host machine

  I'm installing a FreeBSD Server on VirtualBox. I set up the IP address (192.168.10.5) for the virtual server to run a mail server and the host computer(Windows 7) with 192.168.10.184. The two machines cannot communicate or connect to each other. I cannot ping from the virtual machine to the host and vice versa. The host machine connects to a LAN. I want the mail server to run frm a VMachine. I think it's a problem with the network configuration of the virtual machine.

  I am trying to use OpenVPN to access the internet over a secure connection. I have openVPN configured and running on Amazon EC2 in bridge mode with client certs. • DHCP Client Can't Find DHCP Server

  I currently have 3 machines: CentOS (router) eth1 - 18.0.168.1 eth2 - 145.165.34.1 Windows Server 2008 (server) 18.0.168.2 DHCP scope - 145.165.34.10 - 145.165.34.20 Windows 7 (client) Supposed to use DHCP I can't get my Windows 7 client to get an address from the Windows Server 2008 DHCP server. Every network interface can ping each other (ex. 18.0.168.2 can ping 18.0.168.1 & 145.165.34.1 and the other way around). My Linux machine acting as the router has default IP tables. Other than this command which may or may not be right: iptables -I INPUT -p udp -d 18.0.168.2 --dport 67:68 -j ACCEPT I have also tried it after I flushed the IP tables. I was looking at the dhcrelay command but it seems CentOS doesn't have it and I am not even sure how to use it.

• Progressive Enhancement vs. Single Page Apps

  I just got back from a conference in Boston called An Event Apart. A really popular theme amongst the speakers was the idea of progressive enhancement - a site's content should go in the HTML, and JavaScript should only be used to enhance behavior. The arguments that the speakers gave for progressive enhancement were very compelling. Not only is it a solid pattern for supporting older browsers, and devices on a network with low bandwidth, but HTML fails much more gracefully than JavaScript (i.e. markup that is not supported is just ignored, while if a browser throws an exception while executing your script - you are hosed). Jeremy Keith gave a particularly insightful talk about this. But what about single page web apps like Backbone and Angular? The whole design behind these frameworks seems to push the developer toward moving content out of the HTML, and into something like a JSON API. I can not seem to gel these two design patterns: progressive enhancement vs. single page web apps. Are there instances when one is better than the other? Or are they not even antagonistic technologies, and I am missing something here with my mental model?

• Robocopy to a drive connected to a wlan router fails

  I have a wireless router and an USB hard drive connected to it. Basic file access on the command line and Explorer works flawlessly after having set up some options on the router and mapping to some folders with net use k: \\ROUTER\Folder1 /user:MYLAPTOP\Me password /persistent:yes net use n: \\ROUTER\Folder2 /user:MYLAPTOP\Me password /persistent:yes Robocopy (and using SyncToy for that matter) to a network drive however fails: robocopy c:\Files k:\Backup /MIR /Z gives There is not enough space on the disk. 2010/01/05 09:52:11 ERROR 112 (0x00000070) Accessing Destination Directory N:\ Waiting 30 seconds... The error message is misleading: there is plenty of space on the disk and the folders I'm copying are small. The router is an ASUS WL-500gp with a standard firmware. I'd appreciate if someone would be able to explain what is causing the problem and, if possible, how to fix it.

• Sql Server 2005 cluster - unable to rename to old server name

  We have a sql 2005 cluster on W2K8 cluster. It is a named instance say SRV1\A. Then I built a new W2K8 (with a diff cluster service name) but the same service account. Then I installed a new sql 2005 cluster say SRV2\A. Now when I bring down the sql server resources on SRV1 and try to rename SRV2\A to SRV1\A through the cluster admin, I get the error the network name already exists. I have tried bringing an old cluster and installing a new cluster with the same name and it works. Why am I not able to rename the name? Any advice would very helpful.

• vmware server end of life, where to go now?

  We have some virtual machines on vmware server 2.x running on 64 bit hardware and quite happy with it. As vmware server will no longer be offered we are thinking to migrate to ESXi, which seems is free. We will have to install the specialized network cards but that's a minor problem. But once left alone with a quite silently discontinued product there is some resistance to vmware. VirtualBox seems to work: http://blogs.oracle.com/virtualization/2010/06/migrating_from_vmware_to_virtu.html What other free (of licencing cost) options are there? We have windows server 2003 32 bit VMs and also linux 32 and 64 bit VMs to migrate. So xen does not seem an option, which does not run microsoft OSes.

• Cyrus IMAP: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused

  I'm working on setting up a Cyrus 2.2 IMAP server on Ubuntu Server 9.04. If I telnet from the server itself: # telnet localhost imap I get: * OK IMAP Cyrus IMAP4 v2.2.13-Debian-2.2.13-14ubuntu3 server ready Which is what I should be seeing. If I try from another machine on the network: telnet 192.168.5.122 imap I get: telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused To the best of my knowledge, there is no firewall running on the box. I've tried restarting the saslauthd and cyrus2.2 daemons, with no effect. What else can I try?

  Hello, I'm in an odd situatuion here, I've upgraded my network to a 2008 domain from a 2003 with out any issue, this works fine and all the FSMO are in one DC, I was about to install a second domain on a 2008R2 and this error is coming up again and again. I The problem is I keep getting an area telling me that I need to run adprep /domainPrep /forestPrep, but when I run it on the First DC, it tells me this has already been run and updated and it is aborted. Does anyone have any ideas on why I can't add a Server 2008 machine as a domain controller?

• SSRS Subscription Fails

  Our SSRS server is not executing a subscription correctly. (Only subscription we have btw) We created a subscription to export a report as an excel file to the file system. Tried running the job that gets generated, and this error happens 'EXECUTE AS LOGIN' failed for the requested login 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE'. The step failed. It's not the most helpful in tracking down what exactly it was trying to do. EDIT Digging further into the logs I also get these errors w3wp!extensionfactory!f!7/30/2010-14:29:26:: w WARN: The extension Report Server FileShare does not have a LocalizedNameAttribute. w3wp!extensionfactory!11!7/30/2010-14:34:48:: w WARN: The extension Report Server Email does not have a LocalizedNameAttribute.

• Ping only works after about 30 seconds

  Today I am working on this issue and I would love your ideas. There is a network with something like this LAN 1 -- WAN CHANNEL--- LAN 2 The LAN 1 have two segments. When I make a ping from LAN 1 segment 1 it works like a charm. When I make a ping from LAN 1 segment 2 I have no ping, but after about 30 seconds of continues ping (ping -t) it start to work perfect. After some time of no activity with the destination host the issue happens again. Tracing the route packets stops in the last router before the target. This is the first router in LAN 2 after the WAN channel. In the next screenshot you can see thie issue, the first ping is before a continuos ping and the second one is while continous ping is running. Thank you in advance

  I have a Draytek Vigor 2820 router which is connected to our ADSL provider (British Telecom, BT). We currently have one static IP address which is accessible from anywhere outside of our network and points at a simple web server on port 80. We have just been given 5 more static IP addresses which I would like to point at five servers that have static IP's. As an example: Current static IP - 80.123.123.123 New Static IP's - 100.100.100.100-105 Server IP's - 192.168.1.129-133 I have confused myself completely between NAT addresses, static routes and WAN IP aliases. If anyone can give me a clear idea of what I need to do it would be greatly appreciated.

• Throughput tool with decent graphing.

  I've been looking through some of the tools available for measuring network throughput, namely iperf, bwping, ttcp, etc. I am planning on doing throughput tests over a long period of time, so what I really need is good graphing output, preferably rrd graphs. The Jperf frontend for iperf will generate a graph, and bmon has a nice command-line graph, but these simply count seconds since the test was started. I am trying to measure trends in throughput over times of the day, so a graph with times and days is necessary. So a way to get iperf to log to RRDs would be best, if this isn't possible could someone point me toward another solution?

Is there any opensource tool available so that I can share the resources of these PCs over the LAN and increase the speed of my applications and the memory space. I know that if its a graphics intensive application then, it is not very practical, because the speed of LAN is much slower than Graphics processors.   I have developed a web application which will be deployed in a LAN environemnt. Clients will be Computers/Android Tablets/IPAD In order for communication between client and local server 1) need to assign a static IP to local server. 2) need a domian name mapping for that IP address in Local environment. 3) router should assign the same static IP if it gets restarted etc. I am using a windows XP machine as Local server OS. Do i need to take care of router configurations before buying one, or all routers will have same capability to perform this task.   I was setting the MySQL Replication for master - slave/master - slave and Replication for master - slave its works fine but when i have enable this option in my.cnf log-slave-updates=1 for updating the master bin log my replications is starting be slower and the time Seconds_Behind_Master is growing. I use innodb engine but the DB is big. Any idea how i can improve the replication, looks like the network is not the issue. • What are the implications of expanding an internal subnet mask?

  Our network is currently working on a 192.168.0.x subnet, all controlled through DHCP, except for the few main servers who have hard-configured IP address settings. What would I kill if I changed the DHCP-published subnet mask from 255.255.255.0 to 255.255.0.0? The reason for doing this is not because we have a huge sudden influx of machines, but because I'd like to start partitioning specific devices into specific IP ranges (to be neat and tidy). For what its worth, I don' plan on changing the allocated DHCP address range, but rather want to move some of the reserved and excluded DHCP addresses out of the address pool. e.g. printers will be 192.168.2.x I will obviously need to change the subnet mask manually on my manually configured devices.
