• Burning Linux ISO to DVD and making it bootable.

  Hi everyone, I just downloaded the Fedora 14 Live-Desktop ISO and used CDBurnerXP to burn the image to a DVD. For some reason the first time I burned the image nothing showed up on the DVD when I accessed it even though CDBurnerXP said it had successfully burned to the disk. I did it again and the ISO shows up on the disk (I don't think this is right, should it be the files inside the image that show up on disk or the image file??). The problem now is my dell PC can't find the ISO when I try to boot from it. I get an error saying it can't boot from the CD. I have verified the ISO image as directed from the Fedora website. My question is how do I make a bootable CD from a Fedora Live-Desktop ISO? How can I verify that the ISO was written to the CD correctly and has anyone had any issues booting from a CD using a Dell desktop (I'm not at home at the moment so I can't check what model it is but its old enough, I've had it for about 5 years). EDIT: All that needed to be done was to burn the image to CD as an image and not a data file. The first three times failed, I'm not sure if this was because of faulty DVD's or if the write speed was too high (16x). I put in a new DVD and changed the write speed to 8x, the image was then properly burned to the disk without any errors. Thanks.

• Printer irregularly producing garbage output

  Every now and then instead of getting the proper output we get numerous pages, mostly with just a single line, of output which appears to be the raw PCL. My theory is that this happens when the first byte or two of the document is somehow not received by the printer, which then doesn't know how to interpret the rest and does it's best by spitting it out as text. This is a problem I've seen many times over the years but has been popping up more often since we upgraded to Win 7 64 bit, which introduced a number of headaches because of the HP lack of real support for 64 bits. It also appears to happen most often when printing PDF files. We have tried several different PDF readers in addition to Adobe's own but that hasn't helped. While we mainly use HP printers, and the problem is not limited to any particular model, I've also seen it happen on other brands, albeit to a lesser extent. I've also been unable to discern a difference between printers used via a print server or those connected directly by IP address. It also happens to USB attached printers. Because of the erratic nature of this problem there is precious little I can think of to try and debug it, so I'm after any ideas that might help to eliminate it.

  I wonder if a modem is required to be programmed when using with an internet provider? If yes, what is the purpose of programming a modem? Do both a DSL and a cable ISP both require a modem to be used in an individual home? For example, I have a Motorola modem SURFboard Model:SB5101, Customer S/N: xxx S/N? xxx HFC MAC ID: xxx USB CPE MAC ID: xxx a coil of cable and a splitter from Comcast High-Speed internet Self-Installation Kit, which were bought 5 years ago, when I purchased Comcast internet service from its retailer www.comcastoffers.com. With them, I was hoping to reduce the amount of fee by avoiding to ask Comcast people to come over to install. But I remember at that time Comcast sent its technician here, dismissed my idea of self-installation, saying they needed to use their own modem and charging me a hefty fee, and so my equipments have never been used. I haven't been using Comcast for a long time. I wonder if my modem, cable and splitter (brand new, never used) are still good to use with an internet provider such as Comcast? If needed, we can ignore their policy and just consider the technology side? Or they are not good to use and I must throw them away like trash? Thanks and regards!

• Non-volatile cache RAID controllers: what kind of protection is there against NVCACHE failure?

  The battery back-up (BBU) model: admin enables write-back cache with BBU writes are cached to the RAID controller's RAM (major performance benefit) the battery saves uncommitted and cached data in the event of a power loss (reliability) If I lose power and come back within a day or so, my data should be both complete and uncorrupted. The downside to this is that, if the battery is dead or low, OR EVEN IF IT IS IN A RELEARN CYCLE (drain/charge loops to ensure the battery's health), the controller reverts to write-through mode and performance will suffer. What's more, the relearn cycles are usually automated on a schedule which may or may not happen in the middle of big traffic. So, that has to be manually disabled and manually scheduled for off-hours if it's a concern. Annoying either way. NV caches have capacitors with a sufficient charge to commit any uncommitted-to-disk data to flash. Not only is that more survivable in longer loss situations, but you don't have to concern yourself with battery death, wear-out, or relearning. All of that sounds great to me. What doesn't sound great to me is the prospect of that flash module having an issue, though. What if it's completely hosed? What if it's only partially hosed? A bit corrupted at the edges? Relearn cycles can tell when something like a simple battery is failing, but is there a similar process to verify that the flash is functional? I'm just far more trusting of a battery, warts and all. I know the card's RAM can fail, the card itself can fail - that's common territory, though. In case you didn't guess, yeah, I've experienced a shocking-to-me amount of flash/SSD/etc. failure :)

• Strange network issue (ZIP file fails CRC test over VPN)

  We have a server in the office running Windows Server 2003 Our office is connected to our datacenter via hardware VPN (Linksys RV082 router in the office to CISCO router in the datacenter). There is a job that runs on the server in the office that does following: ZIP certain files from the server using 7Zip, copy ZIP file to a network share in the office and verify ZIP integrity, copy ZIP file to a network share in the data center and verify ZIP integrity. Problem is - verifying ZIP integrity for the file in the data center always fails. However, if I run 7Zip on the server in data center that exposes that share ZIP file verifies just fine, so it is not actually corrupted during copy operation. Additionally, I tried running ZIP on other computers in the office to verify ZIP file on datacenter file share and it verifies OK. I tried plugging server to the same network port where my workstation is connected using different cable (my workstation doesn't exhibit this problem) and ZIP verification still fails. So the problem is local to that specific server. On network adapter properties for the server in question there is no "Advanced" tab where one can usually configure a lot of network settings. Network card driver is up to date (Windows Update doesn't find anything newer and Lenovo website doesn't have any drivers for Windows 2003 for this computer model). Is there any other way to configure network setting via command line? What settings could be relevant to this problem?

• Windows 7 Taskbar Icons Randomly Disappearing

  This is a problem that i'm totally stumped on. Taskbar Icons that are pinned, as well as open program thumbs keep disappearing. This is totally random, no set pattern. I've tried updating drivers for the vid card, rolling back to old drivers, nothing seems to work. I've also tried the usual uncheck hide the taskbar and recheck, changing the start menu, keeping commonly used programs in start menu, etc. This is using an add-in card which is a necessity. Here is the specs on the machine: New Dell Optiplex 390 i3 2100 Proc 3gb Ram, Windows 7 32-bit. The add in card is an Nvidia 8400 GS model. I've tried different versions of the 8400gs, from MSI, or from other manufactureres and regardless it keeps happening. After the Icons disappear, I can log out and log back in and they return, but disappear again. I can reinstall the drivers for the vid card and it fixes it for a few days, and then they disappear again. There isn't any set pattern of days that it happens, software being used, etc. Another user in the office had the same problem with the exact same machine, but updating the vid card drivers fixed the issue. Anyone?

• Partition Magic 8 made TrueCrypt partition invisible

  Partition Magic 8 took a dump on my TrueCrypt partition... and I let it happen! And now I am left with cleaning up the mess. In short, my encrypted partition is now invisible. TestDisk analysis says of the disk containing the encrypted partition: "Space conflict between the following two partitions". From the googling and searching on various sites, I have learned the following: Hex editing is beyond me. Partition recovery tools are useless. I am not ready to drop the big bucks for professional help. ... that I should have kept an external backup of the Volume header. Now, to get back the volume header, I am planning on recreating the exact same partitions on a new disk of the exact same model, and then encrypting it with the exact same password/keyfiles, and then exporting its volume header to a file. Finally, I hope to be able to restore this volume header on to my damaged drive. Before I undertake this plan, I would like to know if anyone else out there has tried it and, if so, how successful they were. All other suggestions and tips and welcome!! Thanks.

• File gone or altered after MySQL[HY000][2002] error [on hold]

  I'm working on a rather small project, and today I got an SQLSTATE[HY000][2002]:Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' error. After a bit of googling and a few attempts to restart the mysqld service, I gave up and tried rebooting the computer. This did the trick, MySQL was now running fine. I did, however, get a more serious issue: Some files were missing, others were altered. Also, a few posts in the MySQL was gone. It's really strange, it's like the whole project has been reset two or three days, and I have no clue why. Some additional details about this: I save my files after every line of code. I'm religious about this. So I haven't lost the files that way. I was accessing the server via SSH when the error occurred, so I did the programming and the reboot over SSH. The server is a Raspberry Pi, model B, with Raspian on which I run Apache2. I was viewing the site and had an active session when I rebooted the system. The pages I lost did work just before this all happened. The MySQL fault occurred when I tried to add a text NOT NULL column to a table which had entries. Now, the amount of lost work isn't really that much, so I'm not really looking for help recovering the files. The reason I'm posting this is because I wonder how did this happen, and why?

  HI COMUNITY!!!! I want to use L2E since it s very convenient to my company's apps, I created a demo project, the demo does run on every machine but when I, lets say, press a button that has some code that uses the entity I get this error: specified store provider cannot be found in the configuration, or is not valid. note that I get this error only on machines that does not have VS2008 installed, on these machines (the ones with VS2008) the demo works well. any advice is appreciated. I am using MySql server with Mysql Conector 6.3 and the model is created with ADO.Net entitiy model. • Records not being saved to core data sqlite file

  I'm a complete newbie when it comes to iOS programming and much less Core Data. It's rather non-intuitive for me, as I really came into my own with programming with MATLAB, which I guess is more of a 'scripting' language. At any rate, my problem is that I had no idea what I had to do to create a database for my application. So I read a little bit and thought I had to create a SQL database of my stuff and then import it. Long story short, I created a SQLite db and I want to use the work I have already done to import stuff into my CoreData database. I tried exporting to comma-delimited files and xml files and reading those in, but I didn't like it and it seemed like an extra step that I shouldn't need to do. So, I imported the SQLite database into my resources and added the sqlite framework. I have my core data model setup and it is setting up the SQLite database for the model correctly in the background. When I run through my program to add objects to my entities, it seems to work and I can even fetch results afterward. However, when I inspect the Core Data Database SQLite file, no records have been saved. • Spring security - Reach users ID without passing it through every controller

  I have a design issue that I don't know how to solve. I'm using Spring 3.2.4 and Spring security 3.1.4. I have a Account table in my database that looks like this: create table Account (id identity, username varchar unique, password varchar not null, firstName varchar not null, lastName varchar not null, university varchar not null, primary key (id)); Until recently my username was just only a username but I changed it to be the email address instead since many users want to login with that instead. I have a header that I include on all my pages which got a link to the users profile like this: <a href="/project/users/<%= request.getUserPrincipal().getName()%>" class="navbar-link"><strong><%= request.getUserPrincipal().getName()%></strong></a> The problem is that <%= request.getUserPrincipal().getName()%> returns the email now, I don't want to link the user's with thier emails. Instead I want to use the id every user have to link to the profile. How do I reach the users id's from every page? I have been thinking of two solutions but I'm not sure: Change the principal to contain the id as well, don't know how to do this and having problem finding good information on the topic. Add a model attribute to all my controllers that contain the whole user but this would be really ugly, like this. • makefile pathing issues on OSX

  OK, I thought I would try one last update and see if it gets me anywhere. I've created a very small test case. This should not build anything, it just tests the path settings. Also I've setup the path so there are no spaces. The is the smallest, simplest test case I could come up with. This makefile will set the path, echo the path, run avr-gcc -v with the full path specified and then try to run it without the full path specified. • jQuery.closest(); traversing down the DOM not up

And I am trying to traverse from input.save at the bottom right the way up to div.node... This all works well with one copy of the markup but if I duplicate it (obvisouly changing the ID of the uppermost div.node and use jQuery.closest('div.node') for the upper of the div.node's it will return the element below it not the element above it (which is the right one). I've tried using parents() but that also has it's caveats. • Inserting Records in Ascending Order function- C homework assignment

  Good day, Stack Overflow. I have a homework assignment that I'm working on this weekend that I'm having a bit of a problem with. We have a struct "Record" (which contains information about cars for a dealership) that gets placed in a particular spot in a linked list according to 1) its make and 2) according to its model year. This is done when initially building the list, when a "int insertRecordInAscendingOrder" function is called in Main. In "insertRecordInAscendingOrder", a third function, "createRecord" is called, where the linked list is created. The function then goes to the function "compareCars" to determine what elements get put where. Depending on the value returned by this function, insertRecordInAscendingOrder then places the record where it belongs. The list is then printed out. There's more to the assignment, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. • How do I debug this javascript -- I don't get an error in Firebug but it's not working as expected.

  I installed the plugin better-edit-in-place (http://github.com/nakajima/better-edit-in-place) but I dont' seem to be able to make it work. The plugin creates javascript, and also automatically creates a rel and class. The expected behavior is to make an edit-in-place, but it currently is not. Nothing happens when I mouse over. When I use firebug, it is rendering the value to be edited correctly: <span rel="/emails/1" id="email_1_days" class="editable">7</span> And it is showing the full javascript which should work on class editable. • How can I change 'self.view' within a button method created outside of 'loadView'

  Hey guys. So I am creating buttons dynamically within loadView. Each of these buttons is given an action using the @Selector method, such as : [button addTarget:self action:@selector(showCCView) forControlEvents:UIControlEventTouchUpInside]; Now that showCCView method is defined outside of loadView, where this above statement is located. The point of the method is to change the view currently on the screen (so set self.view = ccView). It gives me an error every time I try and access self.view outside of loadView, and even sometimes when I try and access it at random places within loadView, it just has been acting really weird. I tried to change it around so I wouldn't have to deal with this either. I had made a function + (void) showView: (UIView*) oldView: (UIView*) newView; but this didn't work out either because the @Selector was being real prissy about using it with a function that needed two parameters. • During Spring unit test, data written to db but test not seeing the data

  I wrote a test case that extends AbstractTransactionalJUnit4SpringContextTests. The single test case I've written creates an instance of class User and attempts to write it to the database using Hibernate. The test code then uses SimpleJdbcTemplate to execute a simple select count(*) from the user table to determine if the user was persisted to the database or not. The test always fails though. I was suspect because in the Spring controller I wrote, the ability to save an instance of User to the db is successful. So I added the Rollback annotation to the unit test and sure enough, the data is written to the database since I can even see it in the appropriate table -- the transaction isn't rolled back when the test case is finished. • PHP suddenly failed after IIS update

  All my application pools were stopped this morning after I got to work. I can restart them, but when I try to load the website the app pool crashes again. Update: I've looked in the GAC as the error below suggests and it seems that the file is not there. How do I get it back? Update 2: I found a further error in the event log saying The Module name FastCgiModule path C:\WINDOWS\System32\inetsrv\iisfcgi.dll returned an error from registration. The data is the error. So following the information from here http://forums.iis.net/t/1153937.aspx I removed CGI and my sites are working again. This has fixed the initial problem, but now I don't have FastCGI so I'm fairly sure that PHP will no longer be working (I don't have any PHP at the moment to test). When I bind VisualSVN server to port 8443 and start Site.com, then VisualSVN Server starts without a problem. My goal is to be able to access the VisualSvn Server with a normal url, i.e., one that does't use a port number in the address: https://svn.site.com vs https://svn.site.com:8443 What needs to be configured to allow VisualSVN Server to run on port 443 with IIS running on the same server? Edit / Answer The answer provided by Ivan did point me in the right direction. For anyone else running into this, here is a bit more information. Even though my IIS had no bindings set to the IP address I am using for VisualSvn, IIS will still take the IP address hostage unless IIS is explicitly told which IP addresses to listen to. There is no GUI in Win Server 2k8 to configure the IP addresses for IIS to listen; by default, IIS listens to all IP addresses assigned to the server. The following will help configure IIS to only listen to the IP addresses you want: open a command prompt enter: netsh enter: http enter: show iplisten -- this will show a table of the IP addresses IIS is listening to. By default, the table will be empty (I guess this means IIS listens to all IP's) For each IP address IIS should listen to, enter: add iplisten ipaddress=x.x.x.x enter: show iplisten -- you should now see all the IP addresses added to the listening table. Exit and then reset IIS. Each of these commands can also be run directly, i.e., netsh http show iplisten If you need to delete an IP address from the listening table: open a command prompt enter: netsh enter: http enter: delete iplisten ipaddress=x.x.x.x Exit and then reset IIS.

  Hi everybody, I installed NetBeans 6.8 and tried to run the GlasshFish V3 server. I'm working under Windows Vista 32 Bits. First, it won't run.
