  In a recent project we developed Web Services that expose geographical data in their operations. This blog explains the use case for the service, gives an overview of the software architecture, and briefly discusses GML as markup language for geographical data. Part 2 of this blog provides pointers on the implementation of the service while part 3 discusses the deployment on Oracle WebLogic Server. Use Case The "BAG" (Basisregistratie Adressen en Gebouwen) is a Dutch national database containing information on all addresses and buildings in the Netherlands, and is maintained by Dutch municipalities. • LLBLGen Pro and JSON serialization

  I accidentally removed a reply from my previous blogpost, and as this blog-engine here at weblogs.asp.net is apparently falling apart, I can't re-add it as it thought it would be wise to disable comment controls on all posts, except new ones. So I'll post the reply here as a quote and reply on it. 'Steven' asks: What would the future be for LLBLGen Pro to support JSON for serialization? Would it be worth the effort for a LLBLGenPro user to bother creating some code templates to produce additional JSON serializable classes? Or just create some basic POCO classes which could be used for exchange of client/server data and use DTO to map these back to LLBGenPro ones? If I understand the work around, it is at the expense of losing xml serialization. Well, as described in the previous post, to enable JSON serialization, you can do that with a couple of lines and some attribute assignments. However, indeed, the attributes might make the XML serialization not working, as described in the previous blogpost. This is the case if the service you're using serializes objects using the DataContract serializer: this serializer will give up to serialize the entity objects to XML as the entity objects implement IXmlSerializable and this is a no-go area for the DataContract serializer. However, if your service doesn't use a DataContract serializer, or you serialize the objects manually to Xml using an xml serializer, you're fine. When you want to switch to Xml serializing again, instead of JSON in WebApi, and you have decorated the entity classes with the data-contract attributes, you can switch off the DataContract serializer, by setting a global configuration setting: var xml = GlobalConfiguration.Configuration.Formatters.XmlFormatter; xml.UseXmlSerializer = true; This will make the WebApi use the XmlSerializer, and run the normal IXmlSerializable interface implementation.

• Not able to find IIS Manager and enable IIS in Windows7 Home Basic

  I enabled IIS services in the add/remove windows components. However, when i want to open the manager, the IIS Manager does not appear under the administrative tools on the control panel. If i type the shortcut "inetmgr" into the run block it doesn't find it. However, i know the service installed correctly. It is a very frustrating problem since everyone says find it here or here but no one gives any help on what to do if is doesn't appear in the said locations at all. Can anyone please help me? The system i am using is Windows 7 home basic. The service installed correctly but i cannot find the IIS Manager.

• Permanently change IP address on SuSE 10

  I am trying to change IP address of a SuSE 10 machine that is running Tomcat. I need to create a shell script to do this so could not use YaST. As some sites suggested on my Google search, I edited the files in /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth-* to change the IP address. After that, I restarted the network service by calling /etc/init.d/network restart. The network card restarting just fine. I, then, restarted tomcat web service. However, when I browsed the new IP address using browser, I got an "Request denied" message. Can anyone please tell me how I could do this? Thanks

• How can I set up multiple dynamic users to update a single network's dynamic IP

  On my home network we are allocated a dynamic IP. I want to configure ddclient (or an equivalent) to send IP updates to DNS-O-Matic/OpenDNS only when I am on my home network. I do not want to send IP updates when I'm on my office network. Can this be done? I am prepared to use different FLOSS software or a different free DNS service. Additionally, there are multiple users who may be on the home network or away on other networks. How can we configure ddclient on each machine so that whoever is on the home network updates the IP (i.e. so we don't have to rely on a particular machine being on the network to update the IP). OpenDNS support have said we can't simply install updater software on each machine.

• Notify-osd notifications appear unthemed in top-left corner (ubuntu 13.10)

  Problem I recently upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10, and suddenly notification bubbles don't appear themed as usual in the upper right corner, but they appear as white text on blue background in the upper-left corner. It looks like this: Unsuccesful attempts to fix it I tried reinstalling unity, notify-osd, ubuntu-desktop removed notification-daemon which was installed, none of that fixes it. In fact running ps aux | grep notify-osd shows that notify-osd isn't even running. But when I try to start it manually by running /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/notify-osd I get: ** (notify-osd:4618): WARNING **: Another instance has already registered org.freedesktop.Notifications ** (notify-osd:4618): WARNING **: Could not register instance If I understand well, the instance is registered by the /usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.freedesktop.Notifications.service file, which right now contains: [D-BUS Service] Name=org.freedesktop.Notifications Exec=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/notify-osd Renaming or deleting that file (and rebooting) has no effect whatsoever (and it is not recreated automatically). This is not a duplicate of No notifications from notify-osd on 13.10 (and by the way I purged gnome-flashback-session along with notification-daemon) Question(s) How can I debug this? How can I get notifications to come back to normal? If additional debug information is needed, I'll be happy to add it (just that I can't find any more).

• Trying to configure domain-based access via htaccess file.

  I've created an account with no-ip.com that registers my ip with a subdomain of their service. When I do an nslookup, I see that the service is working and that my domain is being shown. Now I want to provide access to that subdomain on the admin site of our server which is protected by htaccess IP restrictions. When I try to add the new domain to my script it does not work. Am I doing something wrong?   “HDD Low virus” is a new  fake system optimizer application which started affecting all  the Windows ( XP, vista, Windows 7) based computers world wide starting from Monday. It gets installed to the computers without notice by passing all our antivirus software. The infected computers will suddenly popup a system error  similar to the below screen shot and tries to shut down the computer.   Though the major anti virus companies have not yet release an update for this virus, We can easily remove this virus using the below steps Steps to remove HDD Low virus Press Alt+Ctrl+Delete and go the the Task Manager -> Process and kill the process with name [random number].exe ( e.g 123410.exe) Go to Run -> type msconfig to launch the System Configuration utility. In the Start up Tab un check  all the services with random name (e.g jygkgs.exe) and note folder path of the service in the Command column. Go to that folder path and delete all the exe files with random name manually ( It is recommended to use command prompt to delete the files) Delete all the HDD low files in the below path %Desktop%\HDD Low.lnk %Programs%\HDD Low\Uninstall HDD Low.lnk %Programs%\HDD Low\HDD Low.lnk Open registry using Run-> regedit.exe search for the below key and delete software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run [random number].exe” Restart the computer Also update your anti virus definition and run a full scan of your computer to remove any affected files. • How to check a digital certificate?

  I have extracted a certificate from a cable modem. Now I want to verify if this certificate is valid. If I understand correctly, the verification process consists of having the issuer sign the subject's public key and then comparing the result with the subject's signature. This signing process is done using the issuer's private key, which nobody but the issuer has access to. So even if I have both certificates on my PC, there is no way for me to verify the subject's validity. From this I can only conclude that the verification must be implemented as a remote service. The problem is that I don't know what remote service I need to access to verify this certificate. The issuer is "AVM GmbH Cable Modem Root Certificate Authority". How can I find the webservice for verification? Is there standard lookup mechanism for this?

  I want to setup a test database on a vm for development purposes but I cannot connect to the server via the network. I've got Ubuntu 12.04vm installed on 12.04 host in Virtualbox 4.2.4 set to - Bridged network mode - Promiscuous Allow All When I try to ping the virtual guest from any network client I get the expected result. • SQL Server 2005 to 2008 upgrade - are MDF files binary compatible?

  I have 50 databases on a MS SQL Server 2005 system and want to upgrade to MS SQL Server 2008. This is what I tried on some test machines: 1. copied the \DATA directory from the source (MSSQL 2005) to exactly the same path on the target (MSSQL 2008) server. 2. edited the startup parameters on the MSSQL 2008 service to point to the path of the MSSQL 2005 master database. 3. restarted MSSQL service It worked and I can access all databases, tables and data. My questions are: I go back to SQL Server 4.2 and it has never been this easy. I know it worked, but should have it worked? Am I missing something, or is there going to be a gotcha next week? These are simple databases, with just tables, views and indexes. No cross database links, no triggers etc

• OSX 10.6.6 SSH md5 break-in check

  Information Recently one of the linux servers that I access was compromised to steal passwords and ssh keys using a modified ssh binary. This lead me to question if the attacker had compromised my OSX Laptop which had ssh access turned on. A sophos virus scan turned up nothing, and I did not have rkhunter installed before the attack, so I could not compare hashes of the system binaries to be sure. However because OSX is relatively standard for each of their major releases, I asked fiends for md5 hashes md5 /usr/bin/ssh and md5 /usr/sbin/sshd as a basic first check to see if there was anything different about my machine. The sample is relatively heterogeneous spaning a few years of different makes and models of Apples, and different versions of 10.6.x. The different hash for my system made me worried that these binaries might have been compromised. So I made sure that my backup for the week was good, and dived into formatting my system and reinstalling OSX. After reinstalling OSX from the manufacturer DVD, I found that the MD5 hash did not change for either ssh, or sshd. Goal Make sure that my system is does not have any malicious software. Should I be worried that this base install of OSX (with no other software installed) has been compromised? I have also updated my system to 10.6.6 and found no change as well. • Got Bus error (core dumped) when run the nova-compute from nova user

  I got error when I try to restart the nova-compute service on my compute node. [root@mycompute ~]# service nova-compute restart Stopping OpenStack Nova Compute Worker: [ OK ] Starting OpenStack Nova Compute Worker: [FAILED] I check in the log file /var/log/nova/nova-compute.log but nothing is logged in that file. Then I try to run the command with nova user. [root@mycompute ~]# su -s/bin/bash nova bash-4.1$ /usr/bin/nova-compute Bus error (core dumped) I check for this error on net but didn't get the link to where to check for this error.

• ERROR 0x8007007A when trying to schedule a task

  I am getting the error "The data area passed to a system call is too small. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007A)" when trying to create a scheduled task on a particular windows machine. The problem description is identical to that described in this Microsoft KB article I followed their steps to resolve: Stopped the task scheduler service (right-clicked "Task Scheduler" in the Services window from Control Panel and selected "Stop"). Restarted the task scheduler service Waited 15 minutes tried to schedule the task. But the error is persisting. To give more context of how we are creating these scheduled tasks, they are actually generated automatically from a configuration script (we run the script each time we wish to make a change). Each time this happens, it deletes all of the existing tasks and creates new ones. I don't know what else to try.... but surely there is some way to "reset" the task scheduler... How can I stop this error from happening.

• Strange. Asterisk key plays random Windows sound when pressed

  This is a new one on me. When I press the "asterisk", or * button on my number pad (but not SHIFT+8), Windows makes either a "Exclamation" or "Windows ding" sound. I haven't noticed a pattern to which sound is made. Logitech K200 keyboard No special key mapping software or Logitech software running Realtek sound to stereo through optical cable. Visual Studio 2010, Chrome, Fiddler, WinRAR, Notepad++, and Dropbox running. No unusual behavior otherwise. A solution isn't terribly important but my curiosity is both piqued and stumped. This doesn't normally happen and nothing odd has taken place otherwise. Ideas?

• IIS 7 Using Domain Account for Application pool identity Invalid Password

  I have an asp.net website containing a WCF service that I am developing on a Windows 7 machine hosted with IIS 7. I am needing to connect to an instance of Reporting Services 2005 with the service, and have been getting 401 errors when trying to execute reports. So, I assume that I need to be running the IIS Application pool under a domain account. The problem is that when I try to change the identity to a domain account, I get the error message "The specified password is invalid. Type a new password." I've rechecked the password multiple times to make sure it is correct. The account I'm using has admin rights on the machine. I saw elsewhere to try running this command: aspnet_regiis.exe -GA domain\username which I did but it didn't help. What else do I need to do?

Now, Microsoft has made that job easier with their new Office Add on. With it you can save directly into Moodle.   Here are the instructions on how to use. Open your Office Word in this example and then select Save to Moodle (Notice you can also open files that you have stored in moodle make changes and then save back to moodle.
