• ASP.NET Web API - Screencast series Part 4: Paging and Querying

  We're continuing a six part series on ASP.NET Web API that accompanies the getting started screencast series. This is an introductory screencast series that walks through from File / New Project to some more advanced scenarios like Custom Validation and Authorization. The screencast videos are all short (3-5 minutes) and the sample code for the series is both available for download and browsable online. I did the screencasts, but the samples were written by the ASP.NET Web API team. In Part 1 we looked at what ASP.NET Web API is, why you'd care, did the File / New Project thing, and did some basic HTTP testing using browser F12 developer tools. In Part 2 we started to build up a sample that returns data from a repository in JSON format via GET methods. In Part 3, we modified data on the server using DELETE and POST methods. In Part 4, we'll extend on our simple querying methods form Part 2, adding in support for paging and querying. This part shows two approaches to querying data (paging really just being a specific querying case) - you can do it yourself using parameters passed in via querystring (as well as headers, other route parameters, cookies, etc.). You're welcome to do that if you'd like. What I think is more interesting here is that Web API actions that return IQueryable automatically support OData query syntax, making it really easy to support some common query use cases like paging and filtering. A few important things to note: This is just support for OData query syntax - you're not getting back data in OData format. The screencast demonstrates this by showing the GET methods are continuing to return the same JSON they did previously. So you don't have to "buy in" to the whole OData thing, you're just able to use the query syntax if you'd like. This isn't full OData query support - full OData query syntax includes a lot of operations and features - but it is a pretty good subset: filter, orderby, skip, and top. All you have to do to enable this OData query syntax is return an IQueryable rather than an IEnumerable. Often, that could be as simple as using the AsQueryable() extension method on your IEnumerable. Query composition support lets you layer queries intelligently. If, for instance, you had an action that showed products by category using a query in your repository, you could also support paging on top of that. The result is an expression tree that's evaluated on-demand and includes both the Web API query and the underlying query. So with all those bullet points and big words, you'd think this would be hard to hook up. Nope, all I did was change the return type from IEnumerable<Comment> to IQueryable<Comment> and convert the Get() method's IEnumerable result using the .AsQueryable() extension method. public IQueryable<Comment> GetComments() { return repository.Get().AsQueryable(); } You still need to build up the query to provide the $top and $skip on the client, but you'd need to do that regardless. • The curious case of SOA Human tasks' automatic completion

  A large south-Asian insurance industry customer using Oracle BPM and SOA ran into this. I have survived this ordeal previously myself but didnt think to blog it then. However, it seems like a good idea to share this knowledge with this reader community and so here goes.. Symptom: A human task (in a SOA/BPEL/BPM process) completes automatically while it should have been assigned to a proper user.There are no stack traces, no related exceptions in the logs. Why: The product is designed to treat human tasks that don't have assignees as one that is eligible for completion. And hence no warning/error messages are recorded in the logs. Usecase variant: A variant of this usecase, where an assignee doesnt exist in the repository is treated as a recoverable error. One can find this in the 'pending recovery' instances in EM and reactivate the task by changing the assignees in the bpm workspace as a process owner /administrator. But back to the usecase when tasks get completed automatically... When: This happens when the users/groups assigned to a task are 'empty' or null. This has been seen only on tasks whose assignees are derived from an assignment expression - ie at runtime an XPath is used to determine who to assign the task to. (This should not happen if task assignees are populated via swim-lane roles.) How to detect this in EM For instances that are auto-completed thus, one will notice in the Audit Trail of such instances, that the 'outcome' of the task is empty. The 'acquired by' element will also show as empty/null. Enabling the oracle.soa.services.workflow.* logger in em should print more verbose messages about this. How to fix this The application code needs two fixes: input to HT: The XSLT/XPath used  to set the task 'assignee' and the process itself should be enhanced to handle nulls better. For eg: if no-data-found, set assignees to alternate value, force default assignees etc. output from HT: Additionally, in the application code, check that the 'outcome' of the HT is not-null. If null, route the task to be performed again after setting the assignee correctly. Beginning PS4FP, one should be able to use 'grab' to route back to the task to fire again. Hope this helps.

• Rights Expiry Options in IRM 11g

  Among the many enhancements in IRM 11g, we have introduced a couple of new rights expiry options that may be applied to any role. These options were supported in previous versions, but fell into the "advanced configuration" category. In 11g, the options can be applied simply by selecting a check-box in the properties of a role, as shown by the rather extreme example below, where the role allows access for just two minutes after they are sealed. The new options are: To define a role that expires automatically some period after it is assigned To define a role that evaluates expiry relative to the time that each document is sealed These options supplement the familiar options to allow open-ended access (limited by offline access and the ever-present option to revoke rights at any time) and the option to define time windows with specific start dates and end dates. The value of these options is easiest to illustrate with some publishing examples: You might define a role with a one year expiry to be assigned to users who purchase a one year subscription. For each individual user, the year would be calculated from the time that the role was assigned to them. You might define a role that allows documents to be accessed only for 24 hours from the time that they are published - perhaps as a preview mechanism designed to tempt users to sign up for a full subscription. Upon payment of a full fee, users can simply be reassigned a role that gives them greater access to exactly the same documents. In a corporate environment, you might use such roles for fixed term contractors or for workflows that involve information with a short lifespan, or perhaps as part of a compliance process that requires rights to be formally re-approved at intervals. Being role-based, the time constraints apply to any number of documents - including documents that have not yet been created. For example, a user with a one year subscription would have access to all documents published in the relevant classification during the year without any further configuration. Crucially, unlike other solutions, it is not the documents that expire, but the rights of particular users. Whereas some solutions make documents completely inaccessible for all users after expiry, Oracle IRM can allow some users to continue using documents while other users lose access. Equally crucially, a user whose rights have expired can always be granted fresh rights at any time - for example, because they renew their subscription or because a manager confirms that they still need the rights as part of a corporate compliance process. By applying expiry to rights rather than to documents, Oracle IRM avoids the risk of locking an organization out of its own information.

• BAM design pointers

  In working recently with a large Oracle customer on SOA and BAM, I discovered that some BAM best practices are not quite well known as I had always assumed ! There is a doc bug out to formally incorporate those learnings but here are a few notes..  EMS-DO parity When using EMS (Enterprise Message Source) as a BAM feed, the best practice is to use one EMS to write to one Data Object. There is a possibility of collisions and duplicates when multiple EMS write to the same row of a DO at the same time. This customer had 17 EMS writing to one DO at the same time. Every sensor in their BPEL process writes to one topic but the Topic was read by 1 EMS corresponding to one sensor. They then used XSL within BAM to transform the payload into the BAM DO format. And hence for a given BPEL instance, 17 sensors fired, populated 1 JMS topic, was consumed by 17 EMS which in turn wrote to 1 DataObject.(You can image what would happen for later versions of the application that needs to send more information to BAM !).  We modified their design to use one Master XSL based on sensorname for all sensors relating to a DO- say Data Object 'Orders' and were able to thus reduce the 17 EMS to 1 with a master XSL. For those of you wondering about how squeaky clean this design is, you are right ! This is indeed not squeaky clean and that brings us to yet another 'inferred' best practice. (I try very hard not to state the obvious in my blogs with the hope that everytime I blog, it is very useful but this one is an exception.) Transformations and Calculations It is optimal to do transformations within an engine like BPEL. Not only does this provide modelling ease with a nice GUI XSL mapper in JDeveloper, the XSL engine in BPEL is quite efficient at runtime as well. And so, doing XSL transformations in BAM is not quite prudent.  The same is true for any non-trivial calculations as well. It is best to do all transformations,calcuations and sanitize the data in a BPEL or like layer and then send this to BAM (via JMS, WS etc.) This then delegates simply the function of report rendering and mechanics of real-time reporting to the Oracle BAM reporting tool which it is most suited to do. All nulls are not created equal Here is yet another possibly known fact but reiterated here. For an EMS with an Upsert operation: a) If Empty tags or tags with no value are sent like <Tag1/> or <Tag1></Tag1>, the DO will be overwritten with --null-- b) If Empty tags are suppressed ie not generated at all, the corresponding DO field will NOT be overwritten. The field will have whatever value existed previously.  For an EMS with an Insert operation, both tags with an empty value and no tags result in –null-- being written to the DO. Hope this helps .. Since this post generated some feedback that this information was not well-known, I thought it would be good to repost, which I've done with permission from Earl Sullivan. This is an FYI for those who have UPK 3.6.1 and applied the Enablement Pack 1. There is a manual database update that is needed to be run. Here is the information: To correct an issue with permissioning in the Library, this Service Pack, issued in March 2010, also contains scripts to update the database on the Oracle Database or MicrosoftSQL server. Once you have run the Setup.exe file for the Service Pack, the necessary script files can be found at the root of the folder where the Developer is installed. These scripts must be run manually according to the instructions below. To update a database located on an Oracle Database server manually: Run the Setup.exe to install the files for the Service Pack. Start SQL*Plus and login with the system account. At the command prompt, enter the path to the AlterSchemaObjects.sql script located at the root of the folder where the Developer is installed. and append the following parameters: schema_owner - There is a limit of 20 characters on the schema owner name. You can find this information in the web.config file located in the Repository.WS in the folder where the server is installed. password - The existing schema owner password. Statement with generic parameters: @C:\AlterSchemaObjects.sql schema_owner password 4. Run the AlterSchemaObjects.sql script. To update a database located on a Microsoft SQL server manually: Run the Setup.exe to install the files for the Service Pack. Log in to the database using the database administrator account. Open and edit the AlterDBObjects.sql file located at the root of the folder where the Developer is installed. Replace the ODServer text with the username used when the database was installed. You can find this information in the web.config file located in the Repository.WS folder in the folder where the server is installed. Change the database from master to the name of the existing Developer database and run the AlterDBObjects.sql script. Note: The database name is the initial catalog in the connection string in the web.config file. Editor's note: The database update fixes a problem with permissions where the permissions for a user will be incorrectly updated when a group that the user was removed from has their permissions changed.

  I have been updating a Wordpress blog lately and found the turnaround time for content creation and editing is much worse than for Stack Overflow posts. Part of this has to do with being original compositions rather than riffing off a question. But part of it is the software. I am looking for CMS/blog software that has an overall editing experience similar to Stack Overflow. The most important features I'm looking for: Inline editing (mostly) Real-time preview on the same page are all important features for speeding up data entry. Markdown support (with inline and block-level code support) Syntax hilighting The features I must maintain from my self-hosted Wordpress: Somewhat popular/supported software, with extensibility support Self hostable Will work with MySql Wordpress has plugins for all these, but they don't necessarily work together. For example I've found a few markdown-on-save plugins, but I doubt those have a chance of ever supporting inline editing or real time previews. Also the most popular syntax hilighting plugins don't support inline code blocks, and I doubt previews would work with other syntax hilighting methods. If I get a wiki/web page content creation system along with it, or somehow integrate this into GitHub (with all the features I requested) I'll accept those as side benefits :) Formed as a question: Are there any pieces of content creation software for making a blog that support an editing style like Stack Exchange and Stack Overflow? Or magic combinations of Wordpress plugins that offer the same?
