• How to debug "The type initializer for 'my class' threw an exception"

  I am getting the exception: The type initializer for 'my class' threw an exception. in my browser after running my web application. Since this seems to be an error message generated from the view (.aspx), there is no way I can see the stack trace or any log for the source of this error. I have read a bit around the net and one solution to debugging is to throw a TypeInitializationException and then looking at the inner exception to find out what was wrong. How can I do this when I don't know where to surround code with a try/catch ?

  For educational purpose, I am writing a server instance in GCE(google compute engine) to serve a few web apps mostly (to be) written in Dart and Polymer. My workflow is, when my students log-in the server above, they will automatically fork those web apps into their own registries in their own server instances for further development. My issues are, How to serve web applications(they are git registries as well) in GCE like Github Pages? Is it possible to manipulate Github Pages to serve web apps mostly using Dart and Polymer packages? Thanks in advance.

  Hi, I am pretty inexperienced with WCF. I have a DataContract that implements the IExtensibleDataObject interface. Some of the members of this object are populated from freetext input and could contain XML reserved characters ('', for example). I imagine that I get escaping of these characters for free with WCF, but I have been looking around and could not find anything commenting on this one way or another. Is this the case? I have set my service to log the messages that it sends and receives for viewing in the Trace Viewer. Part of a message that my service returns looks like this: <sInstructions>"></sInstructions> Now, I have a couple questions about this. 1) Is it actually transmitting "&gt; and just showing it in a more readable form in the trace viewer? 2) If it is actually is transmitting ">, is this legal XML?

• How can install sqlite-ruby on linux when sqlite3 is not in /usr/local ?

  I am trying to install sqlite3 and sqlite-ruby (ruby 1.8.6) on a linux box where I do not have root. I downloaded the sqlite3 source, binaries, and shared library and placed them all in a directory called sqlite3 I then try to install sqlite-ruby using gem install sqlite-ruby --with-sqlite-dir=the_path_sqlite/sqlite3 but I keep getting the error... checking for main() in -lsqlite... no checking for sqlite.h... no * extconf.rb failed * Could not create Makefile due to some reason, probably lack of necessary libraries and/or headers. Check the mkmf.log file for more details. You may need configuration options. • Deploy java (command line) app using Netbeans / ant

  I've finally managed to create a Netbeans project out of an old standalone (not Web-) Java application which consisted only out of single .java sources. Now I have basically two questions regarding Netbeans Subversion interaction and application deployment: Do you check in all the Netbeans project files into the repository, normally? If I build the project using Netbeans (or ant) I get a .jar file and some additional jar libraries. In order for the app to run properly on the server, some additional config files and directories (log/ for example) are needed. The application itself is a J2SE application (no frameworks) which runs from the command line on a Linux platform. How would you deploy and install such an application? It would also be nice if I could see what version of app is currently installed (maybe by appending the version number to the installed app path). Thanks for any tips.

• Client to access and edit a MySQL database remotely

  Hey guys, So I have been given the host, username, and login information for a MySQL Database. I need a client that I can use to log in to the Database remotely and create/update tables and edit all the data. I found the MySQL Administrator client provided by them, but it seems you can do everything BUT edit the actual data with it. Is there anything like this? Would I be able to use SQL Server Express (or something similar), to connect to a remote server online and do all of this?

• Is there a potential for resource leak/double free here?

  The following sample (not compiled so I won't vouch for syntax) pulls two resources from resource pools (not allocated with new), then "binds" them together with MyClass for the duration of a certain transaction. The transaction, implemented here by myFunc, attempts to protect against leakage of these resources by tracking their "ownership". The local resource pointers are cleared when its obvious that instantiation of MyClass was successful. The local catch, as well as the destructor ~MyClass return the resources to their pool (double-frees are protected by teh above mentioned clearing of the local pointers). Instantiation of MyClass can fail and result in an exception at two steps (1) actual memory allocation, or (2) at the constructor body itself. I do not have a problem with #1, but in the case of #2, if the exception is thrown AFTER m_resA & m_resB were set. Causing both the ~MyClass and the cleanup code of myFunc to assume responsibility for returning these resources to their pools. Is this a reasonable concern? Options I have considered, but didn't like: Smart pointers (like boost's shared_ptr). I didn't see how to apply to a resource pool (aside for wrapping in yet another instance). Allowing double-free to occur at this level but protecting at the resource pools. Trying to use the exception type - trying to deduce that if bad_alloc was caught that MyClass did not take ownership. This will require a try-catch in the constructor to make sure that any allocation failures in ABC() ...more code here... wont be confused with failures to allocate MyClass.   I am using asp.net 3.5 I have a license class containing 10 properties and not marked as serializable. I have to log property changes to the database. License is an entity class,and it is not in my scope to modify it. So I cannot mark it as serializabel neither i can use IpropertyChanged Interface. Now i cannot store it in viewstate as it is not serializable. I wanted to store it so that i can compare it with new values and see which value has changed. How to proceed with this.

• .Net LoginControls - User can't logout in Firefox

  Basically, the logout link doesn't do anything, but only in Firefox. (I can login and out freely from other browsers) There really isn't a whole lot of information I can really give other than that, since I'm still new to this project and .net as a whole, and know almost nothing about the login controls. So if someone else has experienced a similar issue in the past, and can recognize the issue with the little info I have, that would be great! If not, sorry for the lack of depth, but its all I have. • CVS in cmd/gui works only the third time I run a command.

  I'm using CVS in the command line. I'm in my repository folder. When I call a CVS command, I get... cvs [log aborted]: unrecognized auth response from localhost: -f [pserver aborted]: /opt/cvs/XXXXXX: no such repository ...2 times. The third time I run the command, it works with no problems. I tried to use a GUI client (CrossVC) and the same problem occurs. I tried inside gVim and Vim using VCSCommand and I'm having the same issues as well. I've tested with different times between each command, but I still have the same problems. I'm using a CVS configuration with stunnel. Why am I having problem with this setup? Why every time just the third time that I try to run the command that actually works?

Logging settings inside ajaxSend shows me that they are set to settings.data: "remote=1&authenticity_token=6GA9R_snip_253D&random=1270584905846&_method=get" but when it gets sent across the wire, I only have the following: authenticity_token 6GA9R_snip_253D remote 1 Why in the world is this not working?

• How to get notified when a folder is accessed?

  I have a shared folder on my local machine. I want to get notified every time someone tries to access it. Could someone give me some hint on this? I have checked the FileSystemWatcher class, it only provides events for change/creation/delete/rename of the contents under the folder, which is not exactly what I want.   I am having a Java application running in a Tomcat server using Spring, Hibernate, etc. and a two web interfaces, one implemented in Tapestry 5 and the other one using Flex with BlazeDS and Spring-BlazeDS. In my first android application I would now like to log in to the server and retrieve some data. I´m wondering how I could achieve this in a secure way. First of all I need to know which technology is the best to retrieve data from the server and how can I restrict the access to users only that have been successfully authenticated. With what I read until now I would try to implement a HTTPServlet on the server and make server calls via HTTP Client. In the servlet I could probably use the HTTPSession to check if the request comes from an authenticated user. And the data I would try to send serialized (JSON). Unfortunately, I´ve never done those things and maybe I´m on the wrong way and there are more comfortable solutions.

• How do I create a user history?

  I want to create a user history function that allows shows users what they done. ex: commented on an ad, posted an ad, voted on an ad, etc. How exactly do I do this? I was thinking about... in my site, when they log in it stores their user_id ($_SESSION['user_id']) so I guess whenever an user posts an ad(postad.php), comments(comment.php), I would just store in a database table "userhistory" what they did based on whenever or not their user_id was activate. When they comment, I store the user_id in the comment dbc table, so I'll also store it in the "userhistory" table. And then I would just queries all the rows in the dbc for the user to show it Any steps/improvements I can make? :)

• How do I crash the App Pool?

  Our ASP.NET 2 web application handles exceptions very elegantly. We catch exceptions in Global ASAX in Application_Error. From there we log the exception and we show a friendly message to the user. However, this morning we deployed the latest version of our site. It ran ok for half an hour, but then the App Pool crashed. The site did not come back up until we restored the previous release. How can I make the app pool crash and skip the normal exception handler? I'm trying to replicate this problem, but with no luck so far. Update: we found the solution. One of our pages was screenscraping another page. But the URL was configured incorrectly and the page ended up screenscraping itself infinitely, thus causing a stack overflow exception.

  If you assign an invalid date (like December 39th) to a datetime column ActiveRecord returns a "can't be blank" error when is should probably return an error like "Not a valid date" My question. • How can I tell what events fire from GXT?

  I cannot seem to find any documentation of what events fire and when in GXT. The API docs have lists of all the events that could fire (in Events). And it describes how to handle events that you catch. But I'm interested in the opposite side, which events are fired when I take a certain action. I can set some listeners for various different components, or I can use addListener with a specific event code to catch individual events. That's spotty, and I seem to be using trial-and-error to guess what I might want to catch. Is there a way to log all the events that are firing? Or catch all of them so I could look at them in a debugger? Or is there some documentation I am missing that has the information? Something along the lines of "when you click on a widget, a ButtonEvent is fired. Events.x is fired on the hover, Events.y on the click."

  Usually, I work with branches in Git, but I don't like to see hundreds of branches in my working tree (Git history). I'm wondering if there is a method in Git to "join" all commits in a branch in only one commit (ideally with a clear commit message). Something like this: git checkout -b branch <some work> git commit -a -m "commit 1" <some work> git commit -a -m "commit 2" <some work> git commit -a -m "commit 3" git checkout master git SUPER-JOIN branch -m "super commit" After this, only "super commit" will exist in the git log.
