• Is there a usable HTML web gallery template for Lightroom 2?

  The built-in HTML gallery unfortunately generates invalid HTML markup so its looks are likely more coincidence than proper design. That aside its JavaScript usage prevents using the middle mouse button to open an image in a new tab. A look at the few free HTML gallery templates out there shows me that there seems to be little interest in building an actual HTML gallery which doesn't use JavaScript. Most of them are using JS to build fancy animations or in-page popup boxes containing the image. This may be nice for some people but at least one person who looks at my images is on dial-up and quickly opening all images in individual tabs to let them load and then close the connection is very nice to have there. Anyone seen such a gallery template; i. e. simple, plain HTML without JS? My HTML/CSS skills aren't that good that I can develop such a thing on my own, unfortunately.

• Can't find a Windows Explorer alternative that has FULL-TREE View

  I cannot find a Windows Explorer alternative that has full-tree view functionality like Path Finder on the Mac This is the type of view I am looking for (screenshot of Path Finder on Mac): By full-tree I mean: A tree view that includes files in addition to folders, and can be operated as its own pane-- not as a shared pane or attached pane which is characteristic of Q-Dir. Q-Dir and most others simply stick a folder tree pane on to a file list pane, which is not as useful (think Ruby on Rails application or anything with MVC-- I want to be able to pop open folders in the tree and have them stay open as I work between them). • WEB based HPC cluster node management

  Hello, i am working on my school diploma thesis. The main goal is to create web based application where logged users could see free and busy nodes, turn them on and off, see what process they are running etc. Figured out that i could do something like this - write some cron daemon that would run every 30seconds or so, and it could run ping utility for each node to find out if it is on or off, then write results to some file. Then from my web app (i will write in PHP) i could read the info. Will it be a good solution? How would you suggest me to do it? And finally, is there any existing solutions (it may not be a definetly ewb based) for managment of cluster nodes?

• Godaddy vs. Route53 for DNS

  I have my website set up as an EC2 instance and my DNS is currently Godaddy. I'm considering switching to Amazon AWS Route53 for DNS. The one thing I noticed however is that Route53 charges monthly fees but I never get any bills from Godaddy. Obviously, nobody likes getting charged for something they can get for free. If Godaddy is cheaper, can anyone confirm that the page load speed of an EC2 instance is actually better via Route53 vs. Godaddy? If it is not faster or cheaper, can someone point out other reasons it might make sense to do this switch? thanks, tim

• Drawing isometric map in canvas / javascript

  I have a problem with my map design for my tiles. I set player position which is meant to be the middle tile that the canvas is looking at. How ever the calculation to put them in x:y pixel location is completely messed up for me and i don't know how to fix it.   Wow, creating IE Accelerators is superbly easy. If you want to learn how to create one, go here (some MSDN blog) and the MSDN documentation (clearly written). I was fed up of dictionary.com bringing all those popups and the stupid definitions of Google's dictionary. So I decided to scratch my own itch. I randomly stumbled on the site called Wordnik and it provides with all examples plus definitions plus lots more for words and its popup-free (as far as I know). So I decided to write and accelerator. • How to build a 4x game?

  I'm trying to study how succefully implement a 4x game. Area of interest: 1) map data: how to store stellars systems (graphs?), how to generate them and so on.. 2) multiplayer: how to organize code in a non graphical server and a client to display it 3) command system: what are patters to catch user and ai decisions and handle them, adding at first "explore" and "colonize" then "combat", "research", "spy" and so on (commands can affect ships, planets, research, etc..) 4) ai system: ai can use commands to expand, upgrade planets and ship I know is a big questions, so help is appreciated :D 1) Map data Best choice is have a graph to model a galaxy. A node is a stellar system and every system have a list of planets. Ship cannot travel outside of predefined paths, like in Ascendancy: http://www.abandonia.com/files/games/221/Ascendancy_2.png Every connection between two stellar systems have a cost, in turns. Generate a galaxy is only a matter of: - dimension: number of stellar systems, - variety: randomize number of planets and types (desertic, earth, etc..), - positions of each stellar system on game space - connections: assure that exist a path between every node, so graph is "connected" (not sure if this a matematically correct term) 2) Multiplayer Game is organized in turns: player 1, player 2, ai1, ai2. Server take care of all data and clients just diplay it and collect data change. Because is a turn game, latency is not a problem :D 3) Command system I would like to design a hierarchy of commands to take care of this aspect: abstract Genericcommand (target) ExploreCommand (Ship) extends genericcommand colonizeCommand (Ship) buildcommand(planet, object) and so on. In my head all this commands are stored in a queue for every planets, ships or reasearch center or spy, and each turn a command is sent to a server to apply command and change data state 4) ai system I don't have any idea about this. Is a big topic and what I want is a simple ai. Something like "expand and fight against everyone". I think about a behaviour tree to control ai moves, so I can develop an ai that try to build ships to expand and then colonize planets, upgrade them throught science and combat enemies. Could be done with a finite state machine too ? any ideas, resources, article are welcome!

• Config import on network-manager-openvpn

  I'm trying to use a free service using the OpenVPN protocol using OpenVPN's GUI module in the network manager. The config worked perfectly well as .ovpn on Windows. The behavior in Windows is such that I ran OpenVPN GUI and chose to connect to this particular VPN. It would then show the activity in the attempt to connect and opens a dialog box for username/password authentication. I've successfully imported all the configurations by changing the file type to .conf and using the import feature in network manager. However, attempting to connect would simply display the network manager's attempting to connect animation, but ultimately end with a notification of connection timing out.   I am looking for an open-source minimalistic "message board" PHP software. Not a forum, more something like one simple facebook wall. The only thing a user can do is post a new message. With RSS, and able to run on flat files (no database) with Apache+PHP Authentication based on a configuration file, no management UI needed. • using php to list some files in folders

  I have collected many free themes from around internet. Each of them has a screenshot.jpg or png file on their folder. I want to scan all the folders for that file, and return the full file path to be used with an img html tag. I am not interested on partial path or folders where there are not screenshots. For example, if my fodler structure is: ./a/b/ ./c/d/e/screenshot.jpg ./f/ ./g/screenshot.jpg ./h/i/j/k/ ./l/m/screenshot.png ./n/o/ ./p/screenshot.jpg I want to get: ./c/d/e/screenshot.jpg ./g/screenshot.jpg ./l/m/screenshot.png ./p/screenshot.jpg I managed somehow to get a recursive function, but I figured only the way to return an array and then i can't get rid of what I don't need, and I miss png. • I Blame SNMP!

  Anyone who has been reading my blog would have noticed that I have deviated slightly from my original post plan! This post was meant to be on uploading files in Silverlight, so what happened you may ask? Well last weekend I had some friends over for a LAN and one of them brought a managed switch with, which he had just been purchased for work. He proceeded show me how cool it was, how he planned on improving his work network and how it can be monitored remotely via SNMP. After this explanation he started to google for a free SNMP graphing tool. After a few hours of hearing disgruntled mutterings from him I asked what was wrong, he proceeded to rant about how he couldn’t find any tools that suited his needs. It was at this point I though the most dangerous thing a programmer can ever think “I wonder how hard it would be to make one”, of course the answer at the time is always “It can’t be that hard”, and so started my journey into SNMP. I am still in the early stages of this journey so I don’t have to much to report yet, but once I have finished the first version of my SNMP graphing tool I will definitely be posting about it! For now if there are any of you who are interested in doing any SNMP development in C# I would recommend looking at the #Sharp project on CodePlex (http://sharpsnmplib.codeplex.com/), it is the SNMP library I have decided to use and thus far it works beautifully.

The team currently undertaking the task is designing a centralized system with the intent of providing most (if not all) services of the institution electronically. Most of us are academicians with little practical experience. The questions we need answers for are What are the systems (preferably free, as in Beer, and/or open) and best-practices in use in other academic institutions? What are the experiences of people administering academic ICT systems? What are the overheads of attempting to provide services through an intranet cloud (like UEC) for us (a medium-sized academic institution, in a third-world country)? • Routing to various node.js servers on same machine

  I'd like to set up multiple node.js servers on the same machine (but listening on different ports) for different projects (so I can pull any down to edit code without affecting the others). However I want to be able to access these web apps from a browser without typing in the port number, and instead map different urls to different ports: e.g. 45.23.12.01/app - 45.23.12.01:8001. I've considered using node-http-proxy for this, but it doesn't yet support SSL. My hunch is that nginx might be the most suitable. I've never set up nginx before - what configuration do I need to do? The examples of config files I've seen only deal with subdomains, which I don't have. Alternatively, is there a better (stable, hassle-free) way of hosting multiple apps under the same IP address?

This clever electronics hack adds a sensor to your computer for motion-based monitor activation. At the DIY and electronics blog Radio Etcetera they tackled an interesting project and shared the build guide. Their local volunteer fire department needed a monitor on for quick information checks but they didn’t need it on all the time and they didn’t want to have to walk over and activate the monitor when they needed it. The solution involved hacking a simple infrared security sensor and wiring it via USB to send a mouse command when motion is detected in the room. • SSL FTP fails on Windows 7 but not Windows XP clients

  We currently use a free SSL-FTP client called Move-It-Freely to transmit data from a custom data entry program at over forty facilities scattered around the state to our central server. Under XP, it works flawlessly. Some facilities have upgraded to Windows 7. On these machines, uploads (transfers to us) work, downloads (transfers from us to them) fail. Replacing the Windows 7 machine with an XP machine solves the problem. We have also verified that the network firewall settings have not changed. This problem persists even if Windows firewall is not running. We were able to remote into one of the Windows 7 machines to verify that the Windows firewall was indeed turned off. We cannot replicate the problem on our own Windows 7 machines, and are at a loss of how to fix this feature for our customers. The data contain health-related information, and needs to be encrypted (hence SSL-FTP.) Despite hours spent on Google, we cannot find a solution.

• What email providers have extremely high reliability and robust SLAs?

  My dad is a professor who does part-time law practice. He had been using his university email address for professional correspondence, when he found out that the university had permanently lost 16 business-related emails in their spam filter (with no apology, notification, or compensation). What I am looking for now is an email provider (preferably with Exchange, but not required) with very high reliability and a SLA that is basically an insurance policy. I have looked at Google Apps's SLA, but this will not suit. I am looking for a provider who will take $X per month in registration fees, and will: Alert me when there is any downtime. Promptly fix the issue Pay me a fee ($Y) whenever there is downtime. I want a significant, contractual reason for them to be diligent in their service. Free service for me is not enough.

• Suggestions for getting an open source electron beam tracking code going

  I work in the field of accelerator physics and synchrotron radiation. High energy electrons circulating in large rings of magnets produce x-rays that are used for a variety of different kinds of science. Running and improving these facilities requires controlling and modelling the electron beam as it circulates in the ring. A code to model this basically requires trackers to follow the electrons through the elements (something called a symplectic integrator), and then the computation of different parameters associated with this motion. The problem with these codes is that every facility has there own. In principle the code is not so complex. And as a modelling project, one might think it has some general interest. Who doesn't want to be able to create a track in space out of magnets and watch the electrons circulate? There is a Matlab based code to do this called Accelerator Toolbox, but the creator of the code is no longer in the field. I put the code in Sourceforge under the name atcollab. The basic resource is in C- it is the set of symplectic integrators. These are available in the atcollab code here. It has been useful to put the code on Sourceforge in order to exchange code, but the community of users is quite small and most are too busy to put that much time into collaboration. So in terms of really improving the code, I don't think it has been so successful. Any piece of this picture could be recreated without that much difficulty, but overall it is a bit complex, and because each lab has their own installation with lots of add-on Matlab code, people find it hard to really work together and share code. Somehow I think we need to involve a wider community in our development, or just use some standard tools. But for that, I suppose it needs to be of some general interest. I think symplectic integrators may have some general interest. And the part about a plug-in architecture to build up the ring ought to fit other patterns. Or the other option is to just accept that this is not a problem of general interest, and work harder within our small community. Suggestions, or anecdotes of analogous experience would be appreciated.

• safeboot and wubi

  Hi, Having read various posts it seems clear that installing Wubi on a machine which already has safeboot installed with disk encryption is a non-starter at the moment - nor is repartitioning the disk it would seem. However while the c: partion is encrypted - it has an NTFS formatted q: partition that is not encrypted and has about 4GB free - so I was wondering if there was any way to install WUBI using that partion. Obvisouly stil need a means of booting into it without stuffing my safeboot booting mechanism. I'm thinking that this should be possible as the safeboot booting mechanism will get me to the boot choice options and thereafter all references in the boot.ini entry for the wubi installtion should be to files on the non-encrypted NTFS partion and so it should be OK and not attempt any changes to my envrypted c: partion (other than adding the extra entry to boot.ini) ? any thoughts? ta

I've been looking over this question on useful design patterns in gaming, but prototypal inheritance is very different than classical inheritance, and there are surely differences in the best way to apply some of these common patterns. For example, classical inheritance allows us to create a moveableEntity class, and extend that with any classes that move in our game world (player, monster, bullet, etc.). Sure, you can strongarm JavaScript to work that way, but in doing so, you are kind of fighting against its nature. Is there a better approach to this sort of problem when we have prototypal inheritance at our fingertips?

• Oracle RAC interconnect in a Dell M1000e Blade Enclosure

  We are looking at a Dell M1000e enclosure and appropriate Blades with 4 NICs each. We are planning on running Linux/Oracle 11g RAC on two blades, storage will be handled on an iSCSI SAN for which two NICs (via passthrough) will be connected leaving us with two NICs (via blade centre switches). We would like to have an interconnect (obviously) , an external IP and an internal IP. Would best practice be to: bond the remaining two interfaces and VLAN as appropriate to provide three virtual interfaces? run the interconnect on one interface and VLAN the external/internal interfaces? purchase a blade with more NICs as the above is a terrible idea? Another option? Please feel free to point out the blindingly obvious or to relevant documentation on support.oracle. I am specifically interested in supported configurations and best practices. Thanks!
