• Static footer, with attached and scaling overlap

  I have been asked by a client to create a site where the content area overlaps the footer. However they also want the footer to be attached to the bottom of the viewport, which I've done, but it seems that I can't find a good way to vertically stretch the content to maintain the overlap should the browser be resized. I've created a diagram to help explain, http://www.squaresphere.co.uk/images/footer-diagram.png So ideally I need a way of calculating the height of the content and stretching the content div if content_length viewport.height, but keep a min-height if content_length < viewport.height A solution using html+css would be fantastic, but I'm starting to think that I'm going to have to do some funky jQuery onviewportresize or something Any suggestions would be awesome, thanks!

• What should I do with an over-bloated select-box/drop-down

  All web developers run into this problem when the amount of data in their project grows, and I have yet to see a definitive, intuitive best practice for solving it. When you start a project, you often create forms with tags to help pick related objects for one-to-many relationships. For instance, I might have a system with Neighbors and each Neighbor belongs to a Neighborhood. In version 1 of the application I create an edit user form that has a drop down for selecting users, that simply lists the 5 possible neighborhoods in my geographically limited application. In the beginning, this works great. So long as I have maybe 100 records or less, my select box will load quickly, and be fairly easy to use. However, lets say my application takes off and goes national. Instead of 5 neighborhoods I have 10,000. Suddenly my little drop-down takes forever to load, and once it loads, its hard to find your neighborhood in the massive alphabetically sorted list. Now, in this particular situation, having hierarchical data, and letting users drill down using several dynamically generated drop downs would probably work okay. However, what is the best solution when the objects/records being selected are not hierarchical in nature? In the past, of done this with a popup with a search box, and a list, but this seems clunky and dated. In today's web 2.0 world, what is a good way to find one object amongst many for ones forms? I've considered using an Ajaxifed search box, but this seems to work best for free text, and falls apart a little when the data to be saved is just a reference to another object or record. Feel free to cite specific libraries with generic solutions to this problem, or simply share what you have done in your projects in a more general way

• Possible to bind an event listener to a (hypothetical) onChangeInnerHTML event?

  In my app, I have an OL tag whose contents are changed by various other dynamic events. Is there some way to put a listener on that OL so that I can execute a function whenever its contents are altered in any way? In this example I need to update a count of items in the list which appears in another spot in the interface. I am using jQuery if that helps. The contents of the OL are being changed with OL.append() and LI.remove(), in case those methods have some special events that I don't know about Thanks!

  The number of platforms I have to develops apps for is increasing and It brings me lots of stress to learn new technologies for each target platform. I found out that Telerik's Kendo UI is very good to build websites that look and feel native on mobile platforms (e.g. iOS and Android). My question is, is it possible to build HTML5 apps to deploy them on iTunes App Store and Google Play? Please note that I am eager to know the possibility of creating apps (complete apps bundled in standard format of Apple and Google for distribution in their respective mobile app markets) but not websites.

• The best way to deploy one site for two companies in ColdFusion?

  My client has multiple companies; different names/logos etc, but all the content on the sites are identical with the exception of said names/logos. In a ColdFusion environment, what would be the best way for me to serve up identical content and swap out the logos/company names on the fly so I can keep everything in one spot? Is this a jQuery solution? regex? Or will ColdFusion enable me to deploy this in an efficient manner based on the url and session variables?

• Licensing Scripts

  Hi, I've had my first nightmare client recently who was messing me around with payment for a project. So... I've come to an agreement with another client to use some of the sites scripting to build a site for them. But, now the original client wants their site too. I have made a deal to licence the reused parts of the site (some jQuery scripts and a dynamic flash gallery) rather than me signing over full copyright. However, I haven't got a clue how to do this. Can anyone point me in the right direction to read up on this? Thanks

• Javascript appending onload to a popup window

  I'm trying to append an onload event to a popup window in the following manner: var explorerWindow = window.open(PARAMS...); explorerWindow.onload = function() {window.opener.unlockObj(id);} The idea is to make the button that generates the popup window readonly, making it usable again once the popup window has loaded all of its contents. However, the event doesn't seem to be firing at all. I even changed it to the following and got nothing: explorerWindow.onload = function() {alert("bloop");} Is there something terribly wrong with my syntax or am I missing something else entirely? Also, I'm using JQuery if there are any appropriate gems there that will help in this situation. I tried the following with similar results, but I'm not so sure I got the call right: $(explorerWindow).load(function() {alert("bloop");}); Any help is greatly appreciated.

For example: Pre-built partial(s) (w/ or w/o Twitter / FB buttons) Partial(s) that utilize jQuery Twitter and / or FB tunnels (push to the users twitter / FB when they comment) Pre-built mechanism for pushing other users comments to users viewing that Model I can see how some of this functionality could be app specific, however, a generic implementation seems like it would be useful.   I have a image map set up and each area in the image map has a href defined. the href on area contains urls to other pages in my application. i generate a have a small ul which lists down name attribute of the area tag. i want the dynamically generated ul/lis to imitate click behaviour of area tag. for this, i have the following jquery set up - $('li').click(function(e){ $('area[name='+$(this).html()+']').trigger('click'); }); but the above works well only in ie6+. ff does not fire the click event. i also tried the click() variant but to no avail. looking forward for some help.   Hi Can somebody fill me in on JavaScript Testing Frameworks? I'm working on a project now and as the JS (Mostly jQuery) libraries grow, it's getting more and more difficult to introduce change or refactor, because I have no way of guaranteeing the accuracy of the code without manually testing everything. I don't really know anything about JavaScript Testing Frameworks, or how they integrate/operate in a .Net project, so I thought I'd ask here. What would a good testing framework be for .Net? What does a JavaScript test look like? (e.g. with NUnit, I have [TestFixture] classes & [Test] methods in a ProjectTests assembly) How do I run a javascript test? • POST serialized JSON object to a Coldfusion remote method instead of using FORM

  I have javascript object which consists of complex array of structures with nested structures of other javascript objects created dynamicaly on page etc. long story. I can't use form since my vars would be like 2_34_x_y_foo_bar_235423 due to the nature of UI. When I send that stringified object using GET .ajax request to a remote cfc method everything runs ok until JSON becomes 4000+ chars long, and usually it will be longer then that. When I use POST .ajax, I get 302 status and redirection to cfcexplorer. Is there some way I could "attach" object to a form and send my data as form submit, or some way to send JSON object as it is now using ajax call?

• Asp.net control inside of fancybox modal is not "working"

  Your typical "It doesn't work" freak out going on over here. Any direction would help. I have a login control on my master page and I'm trying to only display it using jquery fancybox and then redirect the user once they are logged in. But any buttons or controls that should do "something" when pressed when I put inside the fancy box are not responding. If I keep the div visible and then use the control not using fancybox I get the expected result. What are my options?

  Hi everyone. What i basically want to do is to get content from a website and load it into a div of another website. This should be no problem so far. The problem is, that the content that should be fetched is located on a different server and i have no source access to it. I'd prefer a solution using JavaScript of jQuery. Like people suggest in the comments it's easy buggy when you click multiple times on the same image. How can I disable the img link when it's clicked once and re-enable it when the product is added to the basket? I've tried setting the attribute HREF of to # in the beginning of the function, but that doesn't help. So when a user clicks the function needs to be executed, but the link should be disabled as long as the function is busy. thanks in advance for your help.

  When embedding JavaScript in an HTML document, where is the best place to put the <script> tags and included JavaScript? I seem to recall that you are not supposed to place these in the <head> section, but placing at the beginning of the <body> section is bad, too, since the JavaScript will have to be parsed before the page is rendered completely (or something like that). This seems to leave the end of the <body> section as a logical place for <script> tags. So, where is the best place to put the <script> tags? (This question references this question, in which it was suggested that JavaScript function calls should be moved from <a> tags to <script> tags. I'm specifically using JQuery, but more general answers are also appropriate.)

• Loading an XML file with todays date in the filename... need to fallback to old file if one with tod

Using javascript/jQuery I am currently loading in an XML file that has a file name such as carousel_large_2010-06-08.xml.. the way I am doing it is checked for todays date then grabbing a file that has that date in the filename... the issue is sometimes they wont be uploading a new file for a given day so it needs to fallback to a older date that exists.. Wondering how to do it? • Conventional Approaches for Passing Data to Back-End?

My computer science class group and I are developing a web application for class, which is built in Python (under Django) and uses jQuery on the front end. It's primarily an AJAX-ified application, and passing data from the backend to the front end is done through AJAX calls to specific URLs which return JSON. This is probably a stupid question, but what's the conventional approach for passing data in the opposite direction? • Why can't I use relative URLs with IE7?

  Hello everyone. I've been Googling for a while and can't seem to find an answer to this question. My problem is as follows: For my jquery, I need my links to be relative rather than absolute. My PHP is set to return relative urls and everything is working fine, until I test it in IE7. For some reason, IE7 keeps changing my relative urls to abosulute, which breaks my js script. Is this normal? Is there a way to get around it?
