  Hardware: Intel i7 AMD Radeon HD 6970 SSD with plenty of space 6 GB RAM Software OpenJDK 6, 7, and Oracle Java 7 (reproducible with all three) AMD Catalyst 12.8 and open source driver (reproducible with both) Ubuntu 12.04 x86_64 and older Minecraft 1.3.2 vanilla and older On this setup I am getting rubbish frame rates after a short while of playing, dropping from about 45-55 to 15 in a couple of minutes. CPU use is 40-45 even when rendering the opening screen at 1920x1280, and gameRenderer is using about 90% CPU when playing. Rather than trying to eke out a few more FPS out of an obviously broken rendering pipeline, I really hope to find a solution to make the GPU render Minecraft.

• Shouldn't all source code be plain text? [on hold]

  Some developing environment/languages save the source code you write in a binary/propietary format that you cannot see or edit with a generic text editor. I'm not talking about compiled code, but the source code. An example could be PowerBuilder and Oracle Forms. It's ok you use proprietary technology if you want, but not being able to open the source code you wrote, in a simple editor, if only to read it, seems like a very strict form of vendor lock-in. Also this prevents you from using text-based version controls that can show you the difference between two versions in a line-by-line base. If the code is plain text, you don't need a license in order to just open it, see it and learn from it. Should it be a golden rule to avoid vendor lock-in to avoid technologies that save your source code to anything but plain text files ?

• How do I get the Java plugin in Firefox 3.6 working?

  I have Ubuntu 10.10. I needed the Sun Java so I added Sun Oracle as supplier of packages and installed java-6. However, I haven't been able to persuade Firefox to use this Java for the browser. In fact I managed to turn off the original Java plugin (I can't remember exactly how) and I can't see any way to re-enable it. Ie. it doesn't appear in the "plugins" page of the Add-ons option. (I'm in Firefox 3.6.13) Any suggestions for how to re-enable Java in FF 3.6, and make sure it's using the Sun version? thanks phil

  this is the second time im asking this question because someone had to close my question for a reason which i still dont understand. this is the original question Why is my files,machine,help tab missing in ubuntu 11.10?   I'm an electrical engineering student ( Power, control & instrumentation). 2 months ago I started learning C, and I found programming something really enjoyable and I'd like to continue learning C and few other programming languages along with my electrical engineering degree. So my university is offering an extensive Java Oracle course for 7 days (like 5-6 hours a day) for a really decent price, do you think as an electrical engineer this would help me in my future career? What are the benefits of learning Java for an electrical engineer of my specialization? Do you think it's a good idea for someone in my case to take such an extensive course? I'm hardworker and I really enjoy these things, so I don't think that would be a problem for me.

• Can my machine run Ubuntu( kubuntu | xubuntu | mint ) 12.04 WELL?

  I have a 9 year old computer packing the hardware listed below. My question is, can I run 12.04 ( Ubuntu, Kubuntu, MINT or Xubuntu ) WELL? I was running Ubuntu 10.10 and I upgraded to 12.04 by going through each release via the update manager: 11.04 - 11.10 -12.04 During the installation process for 12.04 I saw an error message that there was an error installing and setting up part of the kernel. Later, when I tried installing a package in synaptic, I got another error message mentioning the kernel. When I rebooted, I got told somehting about my video and graphics was not configured properly and that I would have to do it manually ( like I know ). It gave me the option to enter the system in low graphics mode, but it just hanged. I had an old livecd of Xubuntu 10.10 around so I used that to get into my computer and copy data over to an external hard drive. I think tried to install Xubuntu 10.10 from the livecd, with the option "download updates" checked. The install process moved along a bit, then halted for about 5 hours. I rebooted my machine and tried the Xubuntu 10.10 installer WITHOUT the option to "download updates". The install completed in about 15 minutes. So, all of that is making me wonder if there is someting about 12.04 that does not like my hardware. I'm willing to try again, but only if I know I will not have to spend hours just to get to an error message and a hosed up system like I did last night. I also think I have a lot more RAM than is being reported in the output below. I had extra ram installed last year. I'm not good with the command line readouts, but there seems like there should be a lot more. I wasn't thrilled with Unity. I am willing to try Kubuntu 12.04. Will I run into the same problems? What is the highest version of a *ubuntu can I upgrade to? • Building Enterprise Smartphone App &ndash; Part 3: Key Concerns

Keys Concerns Of Smartphones In The Enterprise These are the factors that you need to be aware of and address in order to build successful enterprise smartphone applications.  Most of them have nothing to do with the application itself as you will see here. Managing Devices Managing devices is a factor that is going to effect how much your company will have to spend outside of developing the applications.  How will you track the devices within the corporation?  How often will you have to replace phones and as a consequence have to upgrade your applications to support new phones?  The devices can represent a significant investment of capital.  If these questions are not addressed you will find a number of hidden costs throughout the life of your solution. Purchase or BYOD We have seen the trend of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) lately within the enterprise.  How many meetings have you been in where someone is on their personal iPad, iPhone, Android phone or Windows Phone?  The issue is if you can afford to support everyone's choice in device? That is a lot to take on even if you only support the current release of each platform. Do you go with the most popular device or do you pick a platform that best matches your current ecosystem and distribute company owned devices?  There is no easy answer here, but you should be able give some dollar value to both hardware and development costs related to platform coverage. Asset Tracking/Insurance Smartphones are devices that are easier to lose or have stolen than laptops and desktops. Not only do you have your normal asset management concerns but also assignment of financial responsibility. You also will need to insure them against damage and theft and add legal documents that spell out the responsibilities of the employees that use these devices. Personal vs. Corporate Data What happens when you terminate an employee?  How do you recover the device?  What happens when they have put personal data on the device?  These are all situation that can cause possible loss of corporate intellectual property or legal repercussions of reclaiming a device with personal data on it.  Policies need to be put in place that protect the company from being exposed to type of loss.  This can mean significant legal and procedural cost that you need to consider. • How can I improve the battery life under 12.04 on my Inspiron 14z? [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: Tips to extend battery life for laptops and notebooks 24 answers How do I improve the battery life of my Inspiron 14z under Ubuntu 12.04? This laptop gets 4-5 hours of battery life using Windows (e.g. here). I've removed Windows, installed Ubuntu 12.04 and the initial battery life was only 2 hours. With some tweaks (described below) it's still only ~2.5 hours. For reference, the laptop is the latest model of the 14z: i5-3337U processor 32GB MSATA, 500GB HDD (5400rpm) AMD Radeon HD7570M graphics card I have put ext4 partitions on both the SSD and the HDD, and have mounted / to the SSD and /home to the HDD. I also put a 24gb linux swap partition at the start of the HDD, though I figure this won't be used all that much (the laptop has 8gb of RAM). After googling around and reading Ask Ubuntu and other sites extensively, I have done the following steps, and they have improved the battery life ~30 minutes (exact improvement not clear, but battery life is still nowhere near 4-5 hours). Installed Jupiter (and set Performance to "Power Saving") Installed laptop-mode-tools cat /proc/sys/vm/laptop_mode now outputs 5 (previously it output 0) But it's not clear that this will help: AskUbuntu question Turned down the brightness of my screen from full to 1/3 Other things I have heard about but have not tried for fear of frying the laptop or my linux install: Add "pcie_aspm=force" at the end of the line with "quiet splash" in /boot/grub/grub.cfg Enable ALPM, but it may already be enabled in 12.04? Enable i915 framebuffer compression Use a propietary driver for the graphics card? Turn off the graphics card? (what would happen if I relied on the internal Intel bridge?) Use TLP? Spin down the HDD more aggressively (howto, but I think laptop-mode-tools does this already) The only other thing I've noticed is that plastic just above the F5, F6 and F7 keys gets really hot. According to Jupiter my CPU temperature is only 69 celsius and the System Monitor shows CPU load at 7% so I don't think it's the CPU. Maybe it's the graphics card? Also, I've set up MongoDB and LAMP on the machine as well. When I run powertop MongoDB is high in the list, but I'm not sure if that's relevant to battery life because I'm not actually doing anything with MongoDB most of the time. • Visual C++, CMap object save to blob column

  I have a MFC CMap object, each object stores 160K~ entries of long data. I need to store it on Oracle SQL. we decided to save it as a blob. since we do not want to make additional table. we also thought about saving it as local file and point the SQL column to that file, but we rather just keep it as blob on the server and clear the table every couple of weeks. The table has a sequential key as ID, and 2 column of time. I need to add the blob column in order to store on every row that CMap. Can you recommend a guide to do so (read/write Map to blob or maybe a clob) ? Thanks.

• Ubuntu 10.10 screen goes nuts and unreadable

  Running Ubuntu 10.10 in its own partition, also have Oracle Virtualbox 4 with Windows XP. Because i previously had a problem with a dark screen when i let the laptop on and i didn't use it for a long while i had set Power settings to Never sleep, never let the Display sleep. Monitor on install set to Laptop resolution 1400 by 1050, refresh rate 60 Hz, rotation Normal. The problem was when the computer was left on and i returned after about an hour, the screen was unreadable, similar to what used to happen to graphics cards before multisync became normal. So it appears as though the graphics card was asked to use a resolution it couldn't handle and went nuts. I had to power off the system, on restart everything was fine. Thanks for any suggestions. • How bad does it look to have left a job soon after starting? [closed]

  I have a job I would like to leave. On advice from friends and parents I have stayed. Their primary concern is that it would look bad on my resume if I left only after a few months of joining. My concerns with the job are as follows: When I started it was preferred I provide and use my own equipment. Could be out of business in a few months from lack of cash flow Poor code quality: memory leaks and lack of error handling. The same mistakes continue to be made even though I have raised the issue. It has become evident that co-workers do not understand memory management rules of the platform and are not interested in learning them. Yet, there is still surprise from them when strange bugs continue to crop up. As a result don't feel I will learn from co-workers. Plus, fixing the the lingering bugs and trying to keep up on new feature development is like a game of whack-o-mole that never ends. I don't believe in the companies vision or its ability to execute on the ideas anymore. My ideas and suggestions for very small tweaks are quickly dismissed. And so more than half or so have come back as bugs that we end up needing to address. I have been told to wait on fixing bugs in codes until we can talk to the original author. I don't feel I am allowed to take initiative to just fix/change things and do what I think is best. Everything needs consensus even for a bug fix before any work is done. I am adopting a shut-up and just do what I am told approach to save myself from ulcers. Lots of meetings (I am personally not involved in all of them which is good) but the sheer amount reminds me of days at a big corporation. Why is everyone around me always meeting? It's a small company. I can count everyone on my toes and fingers. I can say with certainty I have no interest in working with any of them again. This is the first time I have truly worked with a group of so called "B and C players". Ultimately, I think it is my fault for not doing a better job evaluating the team and company before joining. But I have generated a better set of questions when probing companies in the future. My questions are: How bad does it look to have left a job soon (few months) after starting? What would be the best way to explain my concerns and reasons for leaving without badmouthing the company? Should I stick it out to what I believe will be the soon end of the company?

• Automatically change resolution when not in dock

  I have Ubuntu 11.04 (yep, I know it's old news) on my Lenovo W520. At home, I have a dock with dual monitors. I have a pretty decent setup - things work almost perfectly (hence the reason I'm reluctant to upgrade... that and I'm not 100% sold on Unity). Anyway, the only annoyance I have is that when I'm on travel, I use the laptop screen. When I un-dock the laptop, I need to manually go into nvidia x-server settings and change the resolution from 'Auto' to 1920x1200, or it will think I have two screens, and my mouse pointer will be able to go way off the left side of the screen. This isn't a big deal, but I need to do it every time I restart the x-server (so if I reboot, or have to kill it, etc...) What would be really nice is if there was a way for it to automatically detect whether or not there is external monitors (which it seems to do already), and switch into the mode I select, depending on which monitors are connected. Is there any way to accomplish this?
