• How to properly set CPU Units for OpenVz VEs

  According to all the sources I read (openvz wiki, various mailinglists, forums, ..) the values of the cpuunits settings are relative to each other. So when all are equal and the system is busy, all receive the same cpu share. But something still puzzles me with that: why is there a tool "vzcpucheck" which shows "the power of the node/ host": Current CPU utilization: 18000 Power of the node: 880001 Why is there (do I need) an absolute number when all settings are only relative? Shouldn't those two settings result in exactly the same? ve1: 1 ve2: 1 ve3: 1 = 3 ve1: 293334 ve1: 293334 ve1: 293334 = 880001 (power of the node) What's the difference?

• Why does try_files append each path together?

  I am trying to setup a MySQL server and when I went to create a second user it wouldn't give it permissions for the database. I can connect fine as long as I don't specify a database. Access denied for user 'user'@'localhost' to database 'diddata' The connection details are: { 'host' : 'localhost', 'user' : 'user', 'password' : 'password' , 'database': 'diddata' }; And to create the DB and table I did: CREATE DATABASE IF NOT exists diddata; CREATE USER 'user'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'password'; GRANT ALL ON user.* TO 'user'@'localhost'; Note that I've changed the username and password in this question. I've already checked the privileges in MySQL workbench and they are there.

• Router not assigning an IP address after installing OS X 10.6

  I recently installed Mac OS X 10.6, however the ethernet state is down. The assigned IP is 169.x.x.x. When booted the live USB of Ubuntu, I properly get an IP assigned in the range 192.168.1.x from the router 192.168.1.1 I am using the same router and same ethernet line. I tried to ping to 192.168.1.1 from my Mac and I get a host down message. I tried to manually assign the IP and set the router IP to 192.168.1.1 but still the router is unreachable.

  I've implemented Django's relatively new allowed hosts setting, which is meant to prevent attackers from submitting requests with a fake HTTP Host header. Since adding that setting, I now get anywhere from 20-100 emails a day notifying me of invalid HTTP_HOST headers. I've copied in an example of a typical error message below. I'm hosting my site on EC2, and am relatively new to setting up/maintaining a server, so my question is what exactly is happening here, and what is the best way to manage these invalid and I assume malicious requests? • Lost the shift+< and shift+> key combinations

  On my Laptop I have somehow lost the shift+< and shift+ key combinations. Setup: Ubuntu 12.10 OS Windows 7 running in Virtual box Synergyc running on the Linux Host Connected to Synergys running on my desktop machine, also running Ubuntu 12.10 Info The key mappings are fine in Linux. This has happened following an install of vsvim inside of Visual Studio 2012. Now globally inside this particular Virtual Box instance I can no longer use shift+< and shift+ Funnily enough when I go to the VS Key mapping finder it shows me that: Shift+< mapped to Ctrl+Shift+Alt+Z Shift+ mapped to Ctrl+Shift+Alt+X I have asked in super user as this is also affecting the windows environment. • Tons of spam on dreamhost mail user account

  I use dreamhost for my webserver/ email host. I have about 25 users on one domain. and 1 of these users is absolutely inundated with spam every day. I have tried using dreamhosts poor blacklist feature, which was semi working (still letting a lot through) but I reached the 1000 email blacklist maximum very quickly. I have the ability to switch to google apps but that would be very expensive for 25 users. What options do I have aside from changing hosts with better spam filtering? I don't think its possible to only switch 1 user to google apps, it has to be the whole domain. There are other benefits to switching but I don't think they outweigh the cost for this company.

• Seeing DNS changes takes too long on my PC, can it be my router misconfiguration?

  I administer a few sites and need to update their DNS entries from time to time, e.g., adding an A-record point certain subdomain to a certain IP. When I check sites like http://www.opendns.com/support/cache/, I can clearly see the DNS change taking effect throughout the world - is it just my PC that can't see this change (ping newsubdomain.example.org says it cannot resolve host name) The network "map" is like this: My PC -> my router -> my ISP's router -> internet On my PC, the DNS is set automatically which means that if I run iconfig /all, my router will be returned as the DNS server (192.168.1.1). On my router, the DNS is set to be what my ISP provided me with. Is this correct? What can I do to see new hostnames resolved quicker?

• XAMPP Closes the connection

  I want my XAMPP Apache server to host a file (The file is around 250mb) but the server closes the connection and won't let me download the file? Does xampp or apache have any download size limit or something? Tested with a smaller file , the problem is still present. It just doesn't let me download any file from the server.!!! • Can I run virtualized 64-bit Operating Systems if my CPU doesn't support VT-X?

  I have installed VMWare 10.0 workstation on my Compaq CQ60-615DX laptop. The Operating System is Windows 7 Home Premium. When I tried to run Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit in a virtual machine in VMWare I get an error saying: This virtual machine is configured for 64-bit guest operating systems. However, 64-bit operation is not possible. This host does not support Intel VT-x. For more detailed information, see http://vmware.com/info?id=152. So I googled and found that I have to enable Intel VT-x. But I found out that my processor doesn't support Intel® Virtualization Technology (VT-x). So am I doomed and can I never run any virtual OS on my laptop? Or can I run 32-bit OSes?

• RV042 - how to broadcast UDP through VPN

  I setup a gateway to gateway vpn connection with linksys RV042 router. i was able to ping each other, access file sharing ( with netbios enabled ). They are having same subnet mask 255.255.255.0, 192.168.1.0 <--- 192.168.2.0 Firewall disabled. But when i created/host LAN games (eg. warcraft3), it cannot be detect by clients at another site/LAN. • Automating the installation using SSH

  I am running a bash script from a remote host to run a binary file which installs 64 bit JDK 6 update 29 on multiple VMs across the Environment. It is installing the file but, at the last line i have to hit a enter to complete the installation. I want to fully automate the script where i do not have to hit the enter at the last line. This is what i am using ssh ${V_TIERS}@${V_TIERS} 'cd JDK; sh jdk-6u29-solaris-sparcv9.sh' It updates as desired, but during install i have to hit enter to continue and complete the installation. Can anybody please help to fully automate the update process.

• WD: UDMA CRC Errors and Reallocated Sector

  I got a WD Caviar Black 1TB (WD1001FALS) and according to SMART, I got: one "Reallocated Sector" one "Reallocated Event" 26 UDMA CRC Errors in my drive but it's a "Pass" for the "SMART overall-health self assessment test". I think it's because of these, I'm having problems with Grub, and thus can't boot into any OS at all. Are these problems serious? According to "Warranty Services", my drive is still "In Limited Warranty". Would I be eligible for a replacement? FYI: I'm running Ubuntu 11.10. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

• Zeroing SSD drives

  We host VPSes for customers. Each customer VPS is given an LVM LV on a standard spindle hard disk. If the customer were to leave, we zero out this LV ensuring that their data does not leak over to another customers. We are thinking of going with SSDs for our hosting business. Given that SSDs have the "wear levelling" technology, does that make zeroing pointless? Does this make this SSD idea unfeasable, given we can't allow customer data to leak over to another customer? • Can't access the Internet in VMware Workstation

  I'm using VMware 7.1.2 in Windows 7 with Ubuntu 11.04 as a guest OS. In the host OS (Windows 7), I can access the Internet without any problems but in the virtual machine I can't access the Internet. I've tried the following but with no success: Use all methods of connecting to the Internet in "Virtual Machine Settings": Bridged, NAT, Custom; none work. Used cabled and wireless connections on the PC - neither of them work. I've used Ubuntu in VMware for several months - previously the Internet was always accessible. Could the cause of this be because I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04?

• Gnome+NX clipboard behavior; auto-copy on select?

  I am having issues with the Gnome(/Linux/Debian+Ubuntu) clipboard when connected remotely; it's default behavior appears to be to automatically add text to a clipboard buffer when that text is selected. This is not usually a problem, until I need to log into one of these systems remotely (w/ GUI), and attempt to use a shared clipboard. If I 'copy' text on the local machine (destined to replace some text on the remote machine), that copy buffer is overwritten as soon as I select the text on the remote machine to be replaced. Is there some way around this? It sort of drives me nuts. Thanks! UPDATE: This is really an NX server issue; X11 supports multiple clipboards ("selections": clipboard, primary. secondary; see this excellent article) that behave differently, and it appears that my problem is related to how NX server translates this over to the host machine.

• Make the recycle bin of the SSD on a RAID0 drive?

  I don't know about you folks, but I hate the idea of junk sitting on my tiny 30GB SSD. Any way to designate another drive to be the host of the Recycle Bin for items formerly on the SSD? Basically, I need to know how to make a lower-priority drive receive the recycled materials from the 'main' drive, which happens to be short on space. The best thing I can think of is a batch file that a) syncs 'recycle' to another drive; and b) empties the recycle bin. ... but that's too much work for me.

• Windows Server 2012 is telling me it's not activated when it is

  I have a Windows Server 2012 Machine were I need to do some development. The machine is a Hyper-V VM. I activated it with a valid key and restarted the VM. After it booted up again, I went into system properties and saw that it said that Windows is activated. However, there is still the message "Activate Windows" on the desktop wallpaper and if try to change something (for example, the look) it tells me that I need to activate first. Is there anybody who has experienced this? The host OS is Windows 8.1. I already installed all updates and tried to activate again using this CMD-Command: slmgr.vbs /ipk {product key, including dashes}

• How to emulate a domain name - Webmin Setup

  I am currently working on a client project where they are using a custom CMS which relies on having the specific domains configured for it to work properly. So in English, that means that when I try running the site on my test environment, the entire website fails because it isn't located on the primary domain (and I'm pretty sure the domain is hard coded since there's no control panel to adjust the file locations). Anyway what I wanted to ask is whether it is possible to use my test environment URL but have Apache and the DNS emulate my clients website URL locally, rather than calling the actual name servers. Right now I have a virtual host setup in Apache but I am not sure where to go from there. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

• Do best-practices say to restrict the usage of /var to sudoers?

  I wrote a package, and would like to use /var to persist some data. The data I'm storing would perhaps even be thought of as an addition for /var/db. The pattern I observe is that files in /var/db, and the surrounds, are owned by root. The primary (intended) use of the package filters cron jobs - meaning you would need permissions to edit the crontab. Should I presume a sudo install of the package? Should I have the package gracefully degrade to a /usr subdir, and if so then which one? If I 'opinionate' that any non-sudo install requires a configrc (with paths), where should the package look (presuming a shared-host environment) for that config file? • Dangers of the pyton eval() statement

  I am creating a game. Specifically it is a pokemon battle simulator. I have an sqlite database of moves in which a row looks something like: name | type | Power | Accuracy | PP | Description However, there are some special moves. For said special moves, their damage (and other attributes not shown above, like status effects) may be dependant on certian factors. Rather than create a huge if/else in one of my classes covering the formulas for every one of these moves. I'd rather include another column in the DB that contains a formula in string form, like 'self.health/2'(simplified example). I could then just plug that into eval. I always see people saying to stay away from eval, but from what I can tell, this would be considered an acceptable use, as the dangers of eval only come into play when accepting user input. Am I correct in this assumption, or is there somthing i'm not seeing.
