• Windows clients unable to access Samba share on AD joined Linux box every 7 days

  The problem: Every 7 days, 2 Windows Servers are unable to access a SMB/CIFS share. It will start working after a handful of hours. The environment: OpenFiler Linux box joined to 2003 AD Domain Foreground app on Win2003 server access the SMB/CIFS share with windows credentials Another process on Win2008 access the share via SQL Server with windows credentials The Samba version on the Linux box is 3.4.5. Security is set to ADS wbinfo and getent return back expected users and groups Does not look to be a double hop issue as it's always the 2 accounts, regardless of the calling user. There is a DNS entry in both forward and reverse lookup zone for the linux box The linux box's computer object in active directory shows that it was modified around/at the same time that the two clients started failing to access the share Trying to access the share via IP works when by name does not Rebooting the Windows server takes care of it (it's production and only restarted it once) Restarting smbd, winbind, nmbd had no effect Error in samba log for the client in question: smbd/sesssetup.c:342(reply_spnego_kerberos) Failed to verify incoming ticket with error NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE! The Question: Does this look like the machine account password is changing (hence the AD object showing the updated modified date) or are the two windows clients unable to request a new ticket that works against this linux box?

For example: If I want to do a safe distribution of original music for demostration purposes I will need several requisites: 1) The music should be heard using a simple procedure like selecting the name of each song on a playlist of a mediaplayer. 2) The portable media, ussually a portable USB drive, must hide for complete and should make unaccesible the files that contain the audio data to anything but the mediaplayer, that must be in the first partition, the one that is visible. 3) Considering that´s impossible to really hide files in a non-hidden partition, a second hidden partition should be created in the USB drive and the audio data will be stored there. 4) The trick is to read the audio data files stored in the hidden partition with a mediaplayer stored in the visible partition, the media player also should be a complete standalone program and independent from any library of the operating system except of the OS audio system. 5) The hidden partition should have a copy protection scheme that could impede to do copies of the data or create working ISO images of it. I know that this description could not be technically accurate but it has a complete logic from the needs of a music producer against the problem of piracy. The philosophy that surrounds the concept is to transform a virtual object like a digital string of audio in a solid object like the analog vinyl discs are.

  I recently upgraded host to Ubuntu 9.10 with vmware server 2.0.2, i had two guest machine. One is a sme server i had several crash during a session of backup with rsync to another pc. Normal activities run regularly. The other guest is up without problem since 25 days. • cannot connect to <server_name>\sqlexpress

  I have tried disabling firing wall and checked sqlbrowser is started but for some reason I cannnot connect to my datbase... called server_name\sqlexpress.. I have a virtual machine and a full scale MS SQL Server 2008 R2 running on it... and I have several other vm running sqlexpress. they run fine and I can connect to them using sqlexpress... but when i try to access from sqlserver... I get this error. A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. • Cloudfront - How to invalidate objects in a distribution that was transformed from secured to public?

  The setting I have an Amazon Cloudfront distribution that was originally set as secured. Objects in this distribution required a URL signing. I then tried to invalidate objects in this distribution. Invalidation did not throw any errors, however the invalidation did not seem to succeed. Requests to the same cloudfront URL (with or without the query string) still return 403. Requests to the same object in the new distribution were successful. The question Did anyone encounter the same situation where a cloudfront URL that returns 403 cannot be invalidated? • One-To-Many Powershell Scripts

  I'm trying to create a script to run as a scheduled task, which will run against multiple servers and retrieve some information. To start with, I populate the list of servers by querying AD for all servers that match a certain set of criteria, using Get-ADComputer. The problem is, the list is returned as an object, which I can't then pass to the New-PSSession list. I have tried converting it to a comma-seperated string by doing the following: foreach ($server in $serverlist) {$newlist += $server.Name + ","} but this still doesn't work. the alternative is to iterate through the list and run the various commands against each server one at a time, but my preference would be to avoid this and run them using one-to-many remoting. UPDATE: To clarify what I want to end up being able to do is using -ComputerName $serverlist, so I want $serverlist to be a string rather than an object. UPDATE 2: Thanks for all the suggestions. Between them and my original method I'm starting to wonder whether -ComputerName can accept a string variable? I've got varying degrees of success getting the list of computers converted to a comma separated string, but no matter how I do it I always get invalid network address.

  As a developer for the .NET platform, I like to "explore" a platform, framework or API by browsing through the API documentation which explains what everything is - everything is covered and when I use tools like Reflector or Object Browser then I get to know for certain what I'm working with. When I'm writing my own software I can use tools like the Object Test Bench to explore and work with my classes directly. I'm looking for something similar, but for PowerShell - and ones that avoid text-mode.   I like to have my user folder on a different drive (D:) than my OS is (C:). Reading the following post I decided to give it a try. All went quite well, untill I found out that my Windows 8 Apps won't execute anymore (other than that I didn't noticed any problems). My apps do work, while using an account that isn't moved. • Windows ACL inheritance issues for FTP server and automated tools

  I have set up Cerberus FTP server. By default, Cerberus FTP service runs under SYSTEM ACCOUNT. Also I have some console applications which run as scheduled tasks. They are running under a dedicated "Utilities" user account which has "Log on as batch job" permissions. These console applications take uploaded FTP files, process them and then move them to some dedicated archive folder. The problem is that my console apps are throwing Security exceptions when trying to acces the uploaded files. I tried to give the Full control permissions on the ftproot folder for my "Utilities" account and I have checked that "Replace all Child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object" checkbox, but it affects only current files. When new files are uploaded, they again are not accessible by my "Utilities" account. I tried to go another way and put Cerberus FTP service under "Utilities" account. Then I also needed to give "Utilities" account permissions on Cerberus Data folder in ProgramData. Still no luck - after this operation, Cerberus internal SOAP web service stopped working (although everything else seems to work). I need that SOAP service to be available, so running the Cerberus FTP under "Utilities" account seems to be not an option. Unless I find out, what else do I need to set up for that "Utilities" account to stop Cerberus from complaining. I guess, Cerberus is uploading files to some temporary folder and so those files get the permissions form that folder and keep the same permissions even after moved to the ftproot. What would be the right solution for this which would grant Cerberus FTP server and the "Utilities" account minimal needed permissions to access the contents of the ftproot folder?

  What I have? I have normal web application and it has 3 site collections with name, "PDirectory". Other than this I have only Central administration web application in the farm. What I want? I want to delete that web application, "PDirectory". What problem am I facing? I am not able to delete the web application. I get below error when I try to delete it but, the site collections got deleted! • Does Active Directory on Server 2003 R2 support IPv6 subnets in Sites and Services?

  I've been experimenting with IPv6 at our organization. The domain controllers (all 2003 R2) and most of the servers (2003 R2 / 2008 / 2008 R2) have IPv6 configured. We have a subnet assigned through a tunnel provider. Currently, the only workstation that is running IPv6 is mine. (Windows 7) I have been noticing that my workstation is picking domain controllers in other sites for things like DFS, and I finally realized that I don't have the IPv6 subnets set up in Active Directory Sites and Services (ADSS). But when I try to add a IPv6 prefix in ADSS, it tells me: Windows cannot create the object 2001:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx::/64 because: The object name has bad syntax. I believe I may be using the 2008 version of the admin tools (ADSS reports version 6.1.7601.17514) so I'm wondering if maybe my 2003 R2 Active Directory schema doesn't support configuring IPv6 subnets in ADSS. Is this true? UPDATE Even with 2008 R2 schema in Active Directory, I'm having the same problem. How can I get my IPv6 subnets into Sites and Services?

• FreeBSD: problem with Postfix after updating LDAP

  At the server I installed openldap-server, at this computer open-ldap client has already been installed. Version of openldap-client (2.4.16) was older then new openldap-server (2.4.21) and the version of client has updated too. OpenLDAP-client works with postfix on this server and after all updates postfix cann't start again. The error when postfix stop|start is: /libexec/ld-elf.so.1: Shared object "libldap-2.4.so.6" not found, required by "postfix" At the category with libraries is libldap-2.4.so.7, but libldap-2.4.so.6 is removed from the server.   I'm trying to implement password complexities on my pdc. It's a samba PDC with openLDAP backend. I tried cracklib-check but it looks like that I should have a decent and localize version of password library since the library out there usually comes in english. I also have another consideration that we will allow users to use any kind of password - even though it's dictionary based - as long as their passwords integrated with low/upper alphabet, digits, and other characters such as '$' or '_' (pam_cracklib.so calls them as classes). So here is my /etc/pam.d/common-password: #password requisite pam_pwcheck.so nullok cracklib password requisite pam_cracklib.so minclass=4 reject_username ##password requisite pam_cracklib.so \ ## dcredit=-1 ucredit=-1 lcredit=-1 ocredit=-1 reject_username password optional pam_gnome_keyring.so use_autht_ok password required pam_unix2.so use_authtok nullok The first commented line (with #) was the default configuration of openSuse 11.3. The 2nd/3rd (with leading ##) is another configuration I use when minclass=4 line is commented out. By the way, I have 'check password script' = /usr/local/sbin/crackcheck -d /usr/share/cracklib/pw_dict and passdb backend = ldapsam:ldap://127.0.0.1 parameters in smb.conf and cracklib-check works fine too. So here is the test I conduct. I logon to windows and then change my password. Sometimes it works fine that it trows error message - which what I wanted, but simple password with only lower alphabets can pass windows change password. Maybe I should make a new library which incorporates local vocabularies, but a guy out there (raise your hand please if you read this :) ) also experienced the same trouble with english word. • What are the typical methods used to scale up/out email storage servers?

  Hi, What I've tried: I have two email storage architectures. Old and new. Old: courier-imapds on several (18+) 1TB-storage servers. If one of them show signs of running out of disk space, we migrate a few email accounts to another server. the servers don't have replicas. no backups either. New: dovecot2 on a single huge server with 16TB (SATA) storage and a few SSDs we store fresh mails on the SSDs and run a doveadm purge to move mails older than a day to the SATA disks there is an identical server which has a max-15min-old rsync backup from the primary server higher-ups/management wanted to pack in as much storage as possible per server in order to minimise the cost of SSDs per server the rsync'ing is done because GlusterFS wasn't replicating well under that high small/random-IO. scaling out was expected to be done with provisioning another pair of such huge servers on facing disk-crunch issues like in the old architecture, manual moving of email accounts would be done. Concerns/doubts: I'm not convinced with the synchronously-replicated filesystem idea works well for heavy random/small-IO. GlusterFS isn't working for us yet, I'm not sure if there's another filesystem out there for this use case. The idea was to keep identical pairs and use DNS round-robin for email delivery and IMAP/POP3 access. And if one the servers went down for whatever reasons (planned/unplanned), we'd move the IP to the other server in the pair. In filesystems like Lustre, I get the advantage of a single namespace whereby I do not have to worry about manually migrating accounts around and updating MAILHOME paths and other metadata/data. Questions: What are the typical methods used to scale up/out with the traditional software (courier-imapd / dovecot)? Do traditional software that store on a locally mounted filesystem pose a roadblock to scale out with minimal "problems"? Does one have to re-write (parts of) these to work with an object-storage of some sort - such as OpenStack object storage?

  I received a notice that one of our servers' DBCC CHECKDB for all databases has been failing the past four times it has been run. We don't have any data prior to that, but it doesn't look like it has been succeeding for awhile. There are no errors in the log file only: DBCC results for 'sys.sysxmlfacet'. [SQLSTATE 01000] Msg 0, Sev 0, State 1: Unspecified error occurred on SQL Server. Connection may have been terminated by the server. [SQLSTATE HY000] There are 112 rows in 1 pages for object "sys.sysxmlfacet". [SQLSTATE 01000] I ran a DBCC CHECKDB using sp_MSForEachDB to get more accurate results and had the same error on the same DB but at a separate point: DBCC results for 'NameValuePair_Greek_CI_AS'. [SQLSTATE 01000] Msg 0, Sev 0, State 1: Unspecified error occurred on SQL Server. Connection may have been terminated by the server. [SQLSTATE HY000] There are 0 rows in 0 pages for object "NameValuePair_Greek_CI_AS". [SQLSTATE 01000] Also, the error-log states that the DBCC completed without errors for this database. I can't figure out how to track down this ambiguous issue that only happens on this database out of the dozens on this server. Any help is appreciated!
