• Paperclip: delete attachments and "can't convert nil into String" error

  I'm using Paperclip and here's what I do in the model to delete attachments: def before_save self.avatar = nil if @delete_avatar == 1.to_s end Works fine unless @delete_avatar flag is set when the user is actually uploading the image (so the model receives both params[:user][:avatar] and params[:user][:delete_avatar]. • Spring webflow 1.0 - Downloading a file

  I am using spring webflow 1.0. I am uploading a csv file, parsing it, and displying results before proceeding. The user has an option to download a csv file that contains the records that did not pass validation. When I click the link in a JSP to download this file, webflow invokes a form Action. The form action writes out a file via getting the output stream off the response: HttpServletResponse response = ((ServletExternalContext) context.getExternalContext()).getResponse(); I do not want to leave the jsp I'm currently on. I just want to download the file. In other words, I do not want to transition to another state. I just want to serve the dynamically rendered file. • Grouping php array items based on user and created time

  This is an array of objects showing a user uploading photos: Array ( [12] => stdClass Object ( [type] => photo [created] => 2010-05-14 23:36:41 [user] => stdClass Object ( [id] => 760 [username] => mrsmith ) [photo] => stdClass Object ( [id] => 4181 ) ) [44] => stdClass Object ( [type] => photo [created] => 2010-05-14 23:37:15 [user] => stdClass Object ( [id] => 760 [username] => mrsmith ) [photo] => stdClass Object ( [id] => 4180 ) ) ) However instead of showing: mr smith uploaded one photo mr smith uploaded one photo I'd like to display: mr smith uploaded two photos by grouping similar items, grouping by user ID and them having added them within, let's say 15 minutes of each other. So I'd like to get the array in this sort of shape: Array ( [12] => stdClass Object ( [type] => photo [created] => 2010-05-14 23:36:41 [user] => stdClass Object ( [id] => 760 [username] => mrsmith ) [photos] => Array ( [0] => stdClass Object ( [id] => 4181 ) [1] => stdClass Object ( [id] => 4180 ) ) ) ) preserving the first item of the group and it's created time, and supplementing it with any other groupable photos and then unsetting any items that were grouped (so the final array doesn't have key 44 anymore as it was grouped in with 12). The array contains other actions than just photos, hence the original keys of 12 and 44. I just can't figure out a way to do this efficiently. I used to use MySQL and PHP to do this but am trying to just use pure PHP for caching reasons. Can anyone shed any insights? I thought about going through each item and seeing if I can group it with the previous one in the array but the previous one might not necessarily be relevant or even a photo. I've got total brain freeze :(

• HelloWebView Sample: now using SDK 3 and getting killed

  Hey Folks, Well I was trying to get the HelloWebview example working with SDK 7 with no success (see HelloWebView Sample: java.lang.SecurityException: Permission Denial thread), so I decided just out of curiosity to back off to SDK3 to see if I could learn anything. I have been able to get all the "Layout" samples to work and decided to try something a little harder. Unfortunately, I still cannot get the simple HelloWebView app to run. I no longer get a Permission Denial but now the app is getting killed. Killed usually implies that there are not enough resources (memory etc.) for an application to run.... Any thoughts? Are there any other log files I can look at either on my computer or on the emulator? The main.xml, manifest, and console output are below. Let me know if you need more information. • Why doesn't this code work correctly?

  I'm working on a website that displays galleries, using jCarousel. But no matter what I try, I can't get it to work, and I need to finish this by today. I have a very urgent schedule. My code basically takes image URLs from a database and sends them to AJAX, which passes it to jCarousel which makes the gallery. But there are a few problems: It doesn't display correctly! I can only get the last item pulled from the database, and it displays on the bottom-most row. After the item pulled from the database is displayed, the first time I click on "prev" there's no scroll effect, and the item just disappears! Only if I click on "next" 2-3 times there's a scroll effect and the item remains visible. My items are always displayed at the end of the carousel! This is urgent.. EDIT: I changed the code a bit, but it still does not work. I really need help on this one!! EDIT: I added document.createElement("li"); to each while loop. Now all my items are displayed, but they are displayed vertically and not horizontally on each row. Other than that all other problems are the same. EDIT: Oh and also, in the row my image displays, only the image is there. Maybe jCarousel doesn't accept img and text, I don't know.

• Problem with GwtUpload on GAE

  I'm using GwtUpload to upload images on GAE. The problem is that the images seem to get much bigger when I move them into a blob. I've noticed the same for simple text fields and in that case I've realised that some weirdo characters are being appended to the end of the field values (encoding right?). • PHP Based session variable not retaining value. Works on localhost, but not on server.

  I've been trying to debug this problem for many hours, but to no avail. I've been using PHP for many years, and got back into it after long hiatus, so I'm still a bit rusty. Anyways, my $_SESSION vars are not retaining their value for some reason that I can't figure out. The site worked on localhost perfectly, but uploading it to the server seemed to break it. First thing I checked was the PHP.ini server settings. Everything seems fine. In fact, my login system is session based and it works perfectly. So now that I know $_SESSIONS are working properly and retaining their value for my login, I'm presuming the server is setup and the problem is in my script. Here's a stripped version of the code that's causing a problem. $type, $order and $style are not being retained after they are set via a GET variable. The user clicks a link, which sets a variable via GET, and this variable is retained for the remainder of their session. • Error when deploying site of a maven multi module project with FTP

When I launch mvn site:deploy, the deployment of the base module works fine, but it fails to create the directory of the module sites on the FTP server: [INFO] Error uploading site Embedded error: Required directory: '/myremoteftprepository/myproject-mymodule' is missing When I create the missing directory by hand, it works fine, but I would like to avoid that. It is surprising that the deploy command do not create it. Do you how to force this directory creation? Is it a bug in the wagon-ftp plugin?   I am having trouble uploading a large .csv file to my HIGHCHART graph. I've been able to graph an 85KB up to 1486 lines by 9 (I) columns. • drop down menu will not display outside containing div in IE7..

  I am tearing my hair out over this, I have a dropdown menu using CSS and jQuery (thanks to Soh Tanaka) and it works perfectly in Firefox, Safari, Google chrome and I.E. 8, but in IE 7 it will not drop down outside the 'Banner div'. It drops below the nav div however. I have moved the nav div higher in the banner the result is the same, menu drops until it reaches the border of the banner div and then vanishes.... Below is the css. This is my first website and I have some limited understanding of what I am doing. The drop down menu includes transparent png's as links (I know, I know...but it's what the Boss wants...) please could someone take a quick scan at the below CSS and let me know what is wroong? • Firefox all but freezes during large file upload; Ajax progress bar infeasible; IE6 works fine

  I want to provide a progress bar for my users who upload very large files. I did some reading and implemented what should be a pretty straightforward solution: I have a <form> element that contains an file input element; its target is set to the ID of a hidden iframe. On the server side, there's some Spring magic that attaches an object to the user's session; the progress of the upload can be queried from this object. After submitting the form, I start a repeating Ajax call using setInterval that queries the server for the percent-complete using the aforementioned session object. The call repeats every half-second, skipping the Ajax call if the previous call has not yet completed. I use the data from the call to update the width of an onscreen element. When the server call reports that the upload is complete, I clear the interval timer. I created a 100-megabyte file and uploaded it using my interface. This is using Firefox 3.6.3. What I found is that although the upload takes 20-25 seconds, the progress bar doesn't get updated until the very end. Moreover, the entire browser is basically frozen until the upload completes. I assumed that my method must be flawed, but I tried the same page using IE6, and was utterly amazed when it behaved as I had designed it to--the progress bar got updated every half second, and the whole upload only took about 15 seconds, much faster than Firefox. I don't have many add-ons installed, but I tried disabling Firebug and restarting my browser. This marginally improved the performance--I got perhaps a single additional progress bar update mid-upload--but still far from acceptable. Can anyone tell me what I can do to bring Firefox's performance up to the level of IE6? Ugh, I can't believe I actually typed that. EDIT: I just tried uploading a large file from a Firefox 3.6.3 browser on a different machine than the one that's running my web server, and it worked fine. Huh.

• XNA: Camera's Rotation and Translation matrices seem to interfere with each other

  I've been following the guide here for how to create a custom 2D camera in XNA. Right now, I have the rotations mapped to my shoulder buttons on a gamepad, and if I press them, it should rotate around the point the camera is currently looking at. Then, I use the left stick to move the camera around. The problem is that after it's been rotated, pressing "up" results in it being used relative to the rotation, creating the image above.   My cousin got (legally) a laptop model HP Pavilion G4 1303AU from the government of my state. The laptop dual-boots Ubuntu and Windows 7. Everything is great except the BIOS logo at boot which I would like to change but don't know how to. I tried to flash a new BIOS firmware, but this didn't change the logo. I found this link for the same model and the same problem, but no success there either. Also I saw this blog post which wasn't helpful, except for this comment that mentioned an image in .ROM format. Not wishing to decompile and recompile the BIOS, can someone help me out with a step by step guide ?

• cdrom redirection fails on ILOM for Sun x4600 M2

  We have been able to successfully redirect the ILOM on this x4600 M2 in the past, but for some reason now we are getting an error that says "CD-ROM image redirection failed to start": We have also launched the Storage Redirection service and that doesn't help. Launching it a second time to really make sure it's running shows that on the second time it can't bind to port 2121. We didn't get that message the first time, so I assume it is now listening (even though a scan with nmap doesn't show it listening. We are using ILOM firmware version: 3.0.3.31

• Illustrator CS4: SVG Export error "Transforms are Expanded"??

  I get the following error when trying to save my image to SVG (via "Save Copy As"): Transforms are expanded. When I try to load the SVG in another program, all I get is a blank canvas. I ultimately want the path data to feed into RaphaelJS, but the path data that I got by clicking on the Show Code button during the SVG export also yields a blank canvas with RaphaelJS (and I've verified that RaphaelJS is loaded, and it is rendering properly). I'm convinced that this export error in Illustrator is the problem, but I can't figure out how to make it go away and export my SVG graphic properly. Can anyone help? Thanks!

• Run Windows in Ubuntu with VMware Player

  Are you an enthusiast who loves their Ubuntu Linux experience but still needs to use Windows programs?  Here’s how you can get the full Windows experience on Ubuntu with the free VMware Player. Linux has become increasingly consumer friendly, but still, the wide majority of commercial software is only available for Windows and Macs.  Dual-booting between Windows and Linux has been a popular option for years, but this is a frustrating solution since you have to reboot into the other operating system each time you want to run a specific application.  With virtualization, you’ll never have to make this tradeoff.  VMware Player makes it quick and easy to install any edition of Windows in a virtual machine.  With VMware’s great integration tools, you can copy and paste between your Linux and Windows programs and even run native Windows applications side-by-side with Linux ones. Getting Started Download the latest version of VMware Player for Linux, and select either the 32-bit or 64-bit version, depending on your system.  VMware Player is a free download, but requires registration.  Sign in with your VMware account, or create a new one if you don’t already have one. VMware Player is fairly easy to install on Linux, but you will need to start out the installation from the terminal.  First, enter the following to make sure the installer is marked as executable, substituting version/build_number for the version number on the end of the file you downloaded. chmod +x ./VMware-Player-version/build_number.bundle Then, enter the following to start the install, again substituting your version number: gksudo bash ./VMware-Player-version/build_number.bundle You may have to enter your administrator password to start the installation, and then the VMware Player graphical installer will open.  Choose whether you want to check for product updates and submit usage data to VMware, and then proceed with the install as normal. VMware Player installed in only a few minutes in our tests, and was immediately ready to run, no reboot required.  You can now launch it from your Ubuntu menu: click Applications \ System Tools \ VMware Player. You’ll need to accept the license agreement the first time you run it. Welcome to VMware Player!  Now you can create new virtual machines and run pre-built ones on your Ubuntu desktop. Install Windows in VMware Player on Ubuntu Now that you’ve got VMware setup, it’s time to put it to work.  Click the Create a New Virtual Machine as above to start making a Windows virtual machine. In the dialog that opens, select your installer disk or ISO image file that you want to install Windows from.  In this example, we’re select a Windows 7 ISO.  VMware will automatically detect the operating system on the disk or image.  Click Next to continue. Enter your Windows product key, select the edition of Windows to install, and enter your name and password. You can leave the product key field blank and enter it later.  VMware will ask if you want to continue without a product key, so just click Yes to continue. Now enter a name for your virtual machine and select where you want to save it.  Note: This will take up at least 15Gb of space on your hard drive during the install, so make sure to save it on a drive with sufficient storage space. You can choose how large you want your virtual hard drive to be; the default is 40Gb, but you can choose a different size if you wish.  The entire amount will not be used up on your hard drive initially, but the virtual drive will increase in size up to your maximum as you add files.  Additionally, you can choose if you want the virtual disk stored as a single file or as multiple files.  You will see the best performance by keeping the virtual disk as one file, but the virtual machine will be more portable if it is broken into smaller files, so choose the option that will work best for your needs. Finally, review your settings, and if everything looks good, click Finish to create the virtual machine. VMware will take over now, and install Windows without any further input using its Easy Install.  This is one of VMware’s best features, and is the main reason we find it the easiest desktop virtualization solution to use.   Installing VMware Tools VMware Player doesn’t include the VMware Tools by default; instead, it automatically downloads them for the operating system you’re installing.  Once you’ve downloaded them, it will use those tools anytime you install that OS.  If this is your first Windows virtual machine to install, you may be prompted to download and install them while Windows is installing.  Click Download and Install so your Easy Install will finish successfully. VMware will then download and install the tools.  You may need to enter your administrative password to complete the install. Other than this, you can leave your Windows install unattended; VMware will get everything installed and running on its own. Our test setup took about 30 minutes, and when it was done we were greeted with the Windows desktop ready to use, complete with drivers and the VMware tools.  The only thing missing was the Aero glass feature.  VMware Player is supposed to support the Aero glass effects in virtual machines, and although this works every time when we use VMware Player on Windows, we could not get it to work in Linux.  Other than that, Windows is fully ready to use.  You can copy and paste text, images, or files between Ubuntu and Windows, or simply drag-and-drop files between the two. Unity Mode Using Windows in a window is awkward, and makes your Windows programs feel out of place and hard to use.  This is where Unity mode comes in.  Click Virtual Machine in VMware’s menu, and select Enter Unity. Your Windows desktop will now disappear, and you’ll see a new Windows menu underneath your Ubuntu menu.  This works the same as your Windows Start Menu, and you can open your Windows applications and files directly from it. By default, programs from Windows will have a colored border and a VMware badge in the corner.  You can turn this off from the VMware settings pane.  Click Virtual Machine in VMware’s menu and select Virtual Machine Settings.  Select Unity under the Options tab, and uncheck the Show borders and Show badges boxes if you don’t want them. Unity makes your Windows programs feel at home in Ubuntu.  Here we have Word 2010 and IE8 open beside the Ubuntu Help application.  Notice that the Windows applications show up in the taskbar on the bottom just like the Linux programs.  If you’re using the Compiz graphics effects in Ubuntu, your Windows programs will use them too, including the popular wobbly windows effect. You can switch back to running Windows inside VMware Player’s window by clicking the Exit Unity button in the VMware window. Now, whenever you want to run Windows applications in Linux, you can quickly launch it from VMware Player. Conclusion VMware Player is a great way to run Windows on your Linux computer.  It makes it extremely easy to get Windows installed and running, lets you run your Windows programs seamlessly alongside your Linux ones.  VMware products work great in our experience, and VMware Player on Linux was no exception.   I need a solution to store images (1 billion) which users will upload to a website via PHP or Javascript upload (website will have 1 billion page views a month using Linux Debian distros) assuming 20 photos per user maximum (10 thumbnails of size 90px by 90px and 10 large, script resized images of having maximum width 500px or maximum height 500px depending on shape of image, meaning square, rectangle, horizontal, vertical etc). Assume this to be a LEMP-stack (Linux Nginx MySQL PHP) social-media or social-matchmaking type application whose content will be text and images. Since everyone knows storing tons of images (website users uploaded images in this case) are bad inside a single directory or NFS etc, please explain all the details about the architecture and configuration of the entire setup of storage solution, to store 1 billion images on any method you recommend (no third-party cloud storage like S3 etc. It has to be within the private data center using our own hardware and resources.). The solution has to include both the storage solution and organizing the images uploaded by users. How will we organize the users images if a single user will not have more than 20 images (10 thumbs and 10 large of having either width or height 500px)? Please consider that this has to be organized in a structural way so we can fetch a single user's images via PHP/Javascript or API programmatically through some type of user's unique identifier(s).

• Ubuntu 12.04 on Amazon EC2: /dev/xvda1 will be checked for errors at next reboot?

  I'm running the lastest Ubuntu 12.04 AMI (ami-a29943cb) from Canonical on Amazon EC2 and quite often when I log in I get the message: *** /dev/xvda1 will be checked for errors at next reboot *** I have read a bunch of documentation on this and seem to understand that every so many reboots (around 37 see Mount count / Maximum mount count below) Ubuntu wants to check a disk for errors. I don't understand: If this is a virtual drive shouldn't it be less prone to errors? Was the image created with one of the flags set? If not what is triggering it? Why is fs_passno set to 0 on Amazon EC2 Ubuntu images? This is not the first one that is like this.
