• Connect through SSH and type in password automatically, without using a public key

  A server allows SSH connections, but not using public key authentication. It's not within my power to change this at the moment (due to technical difficulties, not organizational) but I will get on it as soon as possible! What I need now is to execute commands on the server using plain old account+password authentication from a script. That is, I need to do it in a non-interactive way. Is it possible? And how do I do it? The client which will be executing the script runs Ubuntu Server 8.04. The server runs Cygwin and OpenSSH.

  I manage a virtual office and our staff uses both SSH keys and passwords for authentication. If one of our staff forgets his password, is there a way to encrypt a temporary password using his public RSA ssh key so I can send it to him via e-mail? I've seen other questions related to this one, however the "answers" generally recommend against using the public/private SSH keys to perform general encryption/decryption and do not actually state if this is possible. I would like to know if it is indeed possible and what are the steps to encrypt and then decrypt the password.

• Using Different Mappings for Uppercase and Lowercase of the Same Key

  I'm trying use AutoHotkey to map some key combinations in a way that respects upper and lowercase, but I cannot get it to work. For example: I want: AppsKey + L types "a" AppsKey + Shift + L types "b" A. I've tried these, but both combinations only give "b" ("+" appears to be the symbol for shihft): AppsKey & l::Send a AppsKey & +l::Send b B. I've tried this, but it won't compile and gives a "invalid hotkey error": AppsKey & l::Send a AppsKey & Shift & l::Send b C. I've tried this, but it won't compile and gives a "duplicate hotkey error" (which makes sense as it appears the hotkey definitions are case insensitive): AppsKey & l::Send a AppsKey & L::Send b Is this type of mapping possible in AutoHotkey? • Key modifiers affect remote VNC sessions in OS X

  I have two concurrent users of my MacBook: one local (with local peripherals) and one remote (connecting via VNC to a user kept logged in with fast user switching). As described here http://macosx.com/forums/howto-faqs/52547-howto-simultaneous-user-environments-via-vnc.html That's working fine, except that when I hit modifier keys (e.g. shift, option, ...), I also affect the remote user. For example, if I hold down shift, the remote user's key strokes are capitalised, and if I hold down option, they get strange glyphs instead of the normal letters. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this, or how to fix it?

• Gitosis installation of public key not working...

  I've been following this tutorial to install and setup git on Ubuntu Server 10.04 using Windows 7 as a client. However, after finally figuring out how it works (executed gitosis-init a bunch of times on the wrong key), I copied the id_rsa.pub file over to the server in /tmp folder and ran it again. Unfortunately it still doesn't work and when I execute git clone [email protected]:gitosis-admin.git it asks for gitosis's password rather than the RSA Passphrase. I'm assuming is the same problem this guy is having here... however, after following his instructions: Purge git-core and gitosis and manually remove the /srv/gitosis folder and following the instructions again (with the proper id_rsa.pub file this time), I'm still having the same issue. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Is there any way to probe for more information that might help in solving this?

  Im Running on Centos, the trouble is when i restart my server i need to start my apache and varnish service I use this to start both of them service httpd restart && service varnish restart But i would likw both of them to start when i reboot the server I read i could use this chkconfig httpd on But this is only for apache could i do this chkconfig varnish on Finally when i do y usual start of httpd , i am asked for my api key for SSL , am i able to incorporate this into resarting both varnish and httpd on start up. Or am i doomed to run this command everytime i resart

  I need to create a new certificate for an internal server. It is self signed. Is there an easy way to just extend the expiration date of the current certificate? If not, can I reuse the current key, or do I need to generate a new one? I'll be using Java keytool. All info I can find online it looks like I need to create a new keystore, but I'd rather skip that step if possible just to keep things simple.

• Controlling access to my API using SSH public key (not SSL)

  I have the challenge of implementing an API to be consumed by relatively non-technical clients -- pasting some sample code into their WordPress or homegrown PHP site is probably as much as we can ask. Asking them to install SSL on their servers ain't happening. So I am seeking a simple yet secure way to authenticate API clients. OAuth is the obvious solution, but I don't think it passes the "simple" test. Adding a client id and hashed secret as a parameter to the requests is closer -- it's not hard to do md5($secret . $client_id) or whatever the php would be. It seems to me that if client requests could use the same approach as SSH public keys (client gives us a key from their server(s) there should be some existing magic to make all of the subsequent transactions transparently work just as regular HTTP API requests. I am still working this out (obviously :-), so if I am being an idiot, it would be nice to know why. Thanks!

  I just installed Ubuntu to get more familiar with it since I'll be using it in a new job shortly. I use Macs at home and in my current job, so I'd like to make it as Mac-like as possible. I've remapped the command and control characters using the following .xmodmap: remove control = Control_L Control_R remove mod4 = Super_L Super_R add control = Super_L Super_R add mod4 = Control_L Control_R Which works great for everything except the terminal, since Ctrl-C is now mapped to CMD-C, and still conflicts with what I'd like to use to copy. Is there any way I can remap the Control key just for the terminal? I'm willing to consider gnome-terminal alternatives if required.

• Speedup of fixing an openssl bug with 8192 bit key [on hold]

  This is related to this Bug-Report https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=747453 OpenSSL contains a set of arbitrary limitations on the size of accepted key parameters that make unrelated software fail to establish secure connections. The problem was found while debugging a XMPP s2s connection issue where two servers with long certificate keys (8192 Bit RSA) failed to establish a secure connection because OpenSSL rejected the handshake. This seems to be a small problem to be fixed but although there is an easy patch available to fix the issue in that bug report, no reactions are noticed so far.. The last patch that broke the 2048 barrier took 2 years to be implemented and only resulted in an increase to 4096bit, which seems to be a bad joke. Where would we have to report this to speed up the implementation for such an issue?

• Setup SSH key per user for Git access

  I'm setting up a site that will have multiple development instances running on the same server. Essentially, we'd have dev-a.whatever.com, dev-b.whatever.com, etc.. all running off a single server. I want to give each user some bit of SSH access in order to update and check in code from our Git repository and to manage files via SFTP. However, I want to restrict each user to their own site as well. So if you have access to dev-a.whatever.com, you don't also have access to dev-b.whatever.com and so on. The restriction is already in place if I login via FTP as a certain user, I can't navigate outside my own site -- but if I grant SSH access to that account I can immediately navigate to any file on the server in SFTP. Is RSSH part of the solution? And how can I assign the correct SSH pub key to the corresponding user? We're using BeanStalk for our Git repository management if that makes any impact.

• Backup files from Linux client to Windows Server

  I'm trying to backup my files from my Linux box to my Windows Server 2008 as a push, and when I delete them from my Linux box, they remain on my Windows Server. I've found lots of sources that are similar, but most results were from Windows to Linux. I managed to find slightly more similar cases like Using rsync and cygwin to Sync Files from a Linux Server to a Windows Notebook PC, and rsync from Windows PC to remote Linux server, with the most similar being a backup from Linux to Windows Server, but through a pull from the Windows Server. Initially, I used Unison because I thought having the 2-way capability would come in handy, and I would just have to set some configurations to make it 1-way. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the right configuration, and only managed to synchronize using the command unison "profile" -ui text -auto -silent. When I deleted the files on my Linux box, the files in the Server got deleted too, which of course, isn't what I want. When I tried to find any options for Unison, I only discovered the -force option, which didn't help, since what I wanted was an incremental update to the Server. I found out I could achieve this from using rsync and the -a option (archive), which would keep adding files even if I deleted them from my Linux box. I installed Cygwin on my Windows Server, configured an SSH daemon, but I can't seem to get it working. I've also already configured Windows Firewall to open port 22 (both inbound and outbound). I used the following command from my Linux box: rsync -avrzn /folder/to/be/backed/up/ [email protected]:/cygdrive/c/place/to/store/backed/up/files (a - archive, v - verbose, r - recurse into subdirectories, z - compress, n - dryrun) but it just won't work. Can anyone help me out? I don't mind using either Unison or rsync, as long as it achieves what I want.

I have other applications that I can simply copy&paste between the 2 OS and they work on both. (These don't use cURL). However this one uses the php library tonic (RESTful webservices) and makes us of php cURL module. The issue is I'm not getting an error message which makes it impossible to find the issue. • "type" Command Not Working As Expected on Git Bash

  The type command, in Linux, returns the location, on the filesystem, of the given file, if it is in the current folder or the $PATH. This functionality is also available through Windows with the Git Bash command line program. The command also returns a file's location given the file without its extension (.exe, .vbs, etc.) However, I have run into what seems like a strange corner case where the file exists on the $PATH but doesn't get returned using the command. I am thinking of buying a new computer soon, so I looked up the method of transferring the license key from one computer to another, in preparation for actually doing this. The method I found mentioned the files slmgr.vbs and slui.exe, both of which reside in the C:/Windows\System32 folder, which is in my $PATH, as usual for a Windows computer. However, these two files aren't showing up when I use the type command. Also, neither gets executed when I call the files as commands without their extensions in Git Bash, and only slmgr.vbs gets executed when I call them with the extensions. Finally, slmgr.vbs is shown when listing the folder's contents in Git Bash, as well, but slui.exe isn't. I thought this might have to do with permissions, and, indeed, both files have very restrictive permissions, as you can see in the pictures below, but they both have the same permissions, which wouldn't explain why one gets executed and the other doesn't when called directly, nor why one file is listed on command line but the other isn't. Then using Windows 7's disk management console, I resized my Windows 7partition and created a 3rd NTFS partition for data, intending for both Windows 7 and Snow Leopard to read/write this partition. I installed MacFuse and NTFS-3G in Snow Leopard, but Snow Leopard still shows I have a single Windows 7 partition. How can I get Snow Leopard to recognize my third partition?

  Background: As part an automated testing suite I am building, I need to set up Autologon on my virtual machines 'on demand'. By on demand, I mean that I don't want to necessarily pre-configure my VM or any snapshot to have Autologon set up already, for security reasons and also a huge business case. My solution so far: I'm copying a script to the guest machine and then using Sysinternals PsExec to execute it. A diff between the registry states shows that the first time I run this, it is missing both the "1" for AutoAdminLogon, and also the DefaultPassword key. The second time I execute it, these values are correctly intact as I intended. So, what is going on here? Is this expected? This post claims in the end that it really all just works (the problem was that a logoff script was setting off the values). Doesn't seem to work for me however. Note this seems unique to Windows 7, does not occur in Windows XP Also note that you don't need PsExec to recreate the issue - just modify the registry yourself EDIT/update: Login interactively and run script (so, not executing it remotely), logging off automatically logs me back in (so, it works) remotely execute the script in guest when I'm interactively logged in, logging off automatically logs me back in (so, it works) remotely execute the script in guest when with non-interactive session if I log in afterwards (so, interactive now) then back off, it logs me back in (so, it then works) EDIT/update 2: This only occurs for Win7x86, Win7x64, Win8x64.   I have over 8 GB in my "Code Library" that I maintain on a 64 GB ScanDisk Ultra Backup USB Device. Windows Search 4.0 (installed on Windows XP) can index removable drives, but Windows 7 (which uses Windows Search 4.0) cannot, because the USB device identifies itself as a Removable drive and Windows 7 refuses to index removable drives.
