• Virtual DNS recommended setup...

  Hi. We are new to virtualization which we are setting up with Proxmox VE (OpenVZ + KVM). I am a bit lost about the recommended DNS forwarder config specially in the OpenVZ (Virtuosso type) of enviroiment. Our intention was to have a small dnsmasq running in one of the VM acting as backup DHCP server and serving our in-office local addresses (and PCs) by an additional resolve.conf file which dnsmasq supports, but I've read that all VM should share DNS pointing to the host machine in which case it would make more sense having it there. My problem is that I would like to have as least as possible apps in the host so a reinstall of the environment (porxmox ve) and a machine restore can be as quick as possible. Does anyone have a similar setup? Does it make sense to have the 1st virtual machine running the local dns forwarder? Also... dnsmasq seems to want to have root permissions when running on an OpenVZ container... are there any work arrounds anyone knows for that.

• How can I get past a BSOD 07b when booting from a VHD?

  I thought I'd be clever and use disk2vhd at the end of my contract to backup my machine so I could easily restore it when I started my new contract, no matter what the buffoons had done with it in the meantime. I didn't count on them losing it. I'm trying to boot this new machine from the VHD. I get the windows logo and then a 07B bluescreen error, something to do with the disk, and it won't boot even in safe mode. The cure apparently is to run sysprep but I can't run that unless I can boot into the VHD so... I can mount the disk, is there a way to modify it

• USB ports not recognizing devices (vista)

  I'm trying to fix a problem on a Vista machine where all the USB ports seem to have power but they don't recognize devices plugged into them. It seemed to start after I plugged my mp3 player (sansa clip) into it and disconnect it. So it sounds similar to this article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817900 but that was for XP. And I did try all the fixes (including the registry entry) but they did not help. It also sounds similar to this SU question 50110 but I don't think it is the mother board. I have see other places that suggest reinstalling the OS...but that seems like a last resort type of thing. I have also seen a suggestion of doing a system restore but not sure if that will help. Any ideas of what I can try?

  I have got an application which has three components Application code : Amazon EC2 US-EAST-1 instance Application images, and other static data : Amazon S3 with CloudFront Application Database : Amazon RDS In short i need something like Cloud Front for EC2. In long, people using this application from a different region say middle east will have faster static content downloading due to Cloud Front but there would be a lot of latency in communicating to EC2 instance. I want to use a budget friendly way of enhancing this. Launching Amazon Instances in every region that offer is sure a choice, but isn't really cheap, so would try to avoid it unless its last resort. Also say if my clients also need to communicate to the RDS database directly, is there some kind of solution which gives that kind of functionality mentioned above, but for RDS?

  I'm running a PgSQL 8.1 on a CentOS 4.4 system (not upgradable unfortunately). There's a Java app running on top of the PgSQL daemon and we got to reindex the database every 2 months or so. Also important: the database isn't growing. It looks like the bloat is now coming faster than before and this tends to increase. • Manage song metadata on CentOS from command line

  I am making a simple Pandora.com alternative for myself and a few friends where the user can upload his/her songs and listen to them anywhere. My intent is to make a lightweight, simple player in HTML5 so all the user needs is a current Firefox or Chrome to use it. I have set it up so that all uploaded songs get converted to .ogg and added to a database but I also want some metadata (not sure if that is the correct term) for the songs to be stored in the database so the player can tell the user what song he/she is listening too. I know there are several GUI tools for managing the title/artist/album info for songs but I'm having trouble finding any good ones I can use from the command line. If the song has the information already in the file, I think I can use mplayer to retrieve the information but it would be really great if there was one that would look up the song information online. I don't mind interfacing with an API (would be pretty interesting actually). Do you guys have any suggestions?

• Set-and-forget Windows backup software with NAS-support?

  Hi all, I am looking for set-and-forget backup software for Windows (Vista & 7, and if possible XP/2003). The idea is that it runs in the background on the clients, and does its thing towards a network-share. In case the HDD of one of these clients spontaneously combusts, all I want to have to do is: replace the drive, insert a USB-stick, boot from it, and restore the machine. It should support drives which use [ICH]-RAID. What are my options here? It looks like WHS meets all the requirements, but I am curious about my other options here.

• Is Sql Server 2008 R2 unsupported by Operations Manager (SCOM) 2007 R2?

  Hey all, I'm performing a test configuration of System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2, on a system prepared with Sql Server 2008 R2. Unfortunately, the Scom 2007 R2 prerequisites verification program seems to be detecting exact versions of Sql Server, and not simply a minimum version, like it claims: "System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 requires SQL Server 2005 Standard or Enterprise Edition with SP1 and above or SQL Server 2008 Standard or Enterprise edition with SP1 and above. Note: Operations Manager 2007 R2 does not support a 32-bit Operations Manager Operations database, Reporting Server data warehouse or Audit Collection database on a 64-bit operating system." I had hoped that this was just a helper tool that was assisting in getting me off the ground, but unfortunately it seems as if it's actually used as a gate for the installation to proceed. Has anyone encountered this? If so, is there a way to fool the installer into thinking that it has a proper version, or otherwise alert it to my valid configuration?

  My database is growing slower even though I have a bunch of indexes setup. Yesterday I figured out that I need to setup a maintenance plan to build the indexes etc. So my question is what's the ultimate configuration for this? Do I need All: "Rebuild idex task", "Reorganize index task" and "update statistics task". Anything else I need to setup. Shrink database? (Today, the only maintenance plans I have is backup) Does it matter in what order I run them? Any configuration options I should be aware of? I've read of problems with log growing wild, how do I fix that? My transaction log is quite small and is usually a problem for me. -

• How can I secure Postgres for remote access when not in a private network?

  I have a database server on a VMWare VM (Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS server), and it just occurred to me that the server is accessible via the web, since the same physical server contains a VM that hosts public websites. My iptables in the database are such that only SSH traffic, loopback traffic, and TCP on port 5432 are allowed. I will only allow host access to the Postgres server from the IP of the other VM on the same physical machine. Does this seem sufficient for security, assuming there aren't gaping holes in my general OS configuration, or is Postgres one of those services that should never be web facing, (assuming there are some of "those"). Will I need to use hostssl instead of host in my pg_hba.conf, even though the data will travel only on my own network, presumably?

  In Microsoft Entourage, I can use Tab to move the highlighted selection from "Inbox" in the left-hand column: ...to the list of email in my inbox: And Shift-Tab returns the selection to the left-hand column again. But once-in-a-while when I return to Entourage (but never immediately after launching it), Tab and Shift-Tab are reversed. That is, I need to use Shift-Tab to move the highlighted selection to the list of email and Tab to return the selection to the left-hand column. I don't know what causes this, and I find it so annoying that I'll restart Entourage just to restore Tab and Shift-Tab to what my muscle-memory expects. What is causing them to get reversed, and can I un-reverse them without restarting Entourage?

  I was browsing the net to find a solution, but I had no luck. :( How can I install Oracle's imp / exp binaries to my CentOS box without installing an Oracle Server? I'm accessing an existing Oracle database on another machine, so I only need a client here. I already installed sqlplus and its dependencies (oracle-instantclient11.2-basic-11.2.0.3.0-1.x86_64.rpm, and oracle-instantclient11.2-odbc-11.2.0.3.0-1.x86_64.rpm), but that didn't provide those tools. Do I really need to fully install Oracle? My aim is to suck a database dump from the Oracle to my CentOS box. If there is another way to do this without using exp I wouldn't feel bad about NOT using it, but it seems to me there is no alternative.

• Why do I see the weird backspace behaviour on my shell sometimes?

  I use bash shell and sometimes all of a sudded, my Backspace key stops working (when this happens Ctrl + Backspace still works fine) I am not sure why this happens, but it also carries over to any vim sessions that I use from the shell. To my surprise, getting a fresh shell does not help, and the problem seems to go away as abruptly as it started. This is what the typed characters look like, each Backspace keypress is shown by a ^? on the shell $ cat filem^?namr^?e Does anybody have a clue what might be happening? How can I restore the normal behaviour?

• Winlogon.exe causes C++ runtime error

  Recently I've become unable to log into my Dell Precision M2400. It uses the Dell Controlpoint login GUI instead of the typical windows one, and has now started giving me a runtime error on winlogon.exe that ends with a c000021a BSOD. I have tried running through safe mode and a restore to the last known good setting with no success. Unfortunately by BIOS password is locked and the one IT guy with the password is on vacation and unreachable until after I leave for a business trip. Is there anyway to bypass the Dell logon screen and get to the default windows one? Thanks.

  I am unable to boot into my Ubuntu system. First I get that fsck died with exit status 4 Then I try to do it manually as prompted and I get that an Inode has illegal blocks and asked to clear it. Upon googling, I found that is because my HD has some problems I booted via Live cd and took a dd of the entire Ubuntu on an external HDD just in case. Is it safe to clear all the illegal blocks. How do I safely restore my environment if I replace my HD. Is there any thing i can do in the meanwhile to continue to use my laptop without significant loss of data. After you install some program (ie "Notepad++") you can easily see what registry data use new installed program, on what location are the file's is stored and many more.   Hi, See what I wanna do is basically make bootable clones or disc images or whatever(let's call it "stuff" for now ) and store many of them in a single big HDD. Then, I wanna use that big HDD and the "stuff" in it to be able to deploy new machines without the hassle of reinstalling Windows and whatnot(i.e. I do not want to restore nor simply clone a same machine, I literally want to use clones to save time during machine set up). Obviously I'd deploy the "stuff" onto an HDD going into a machine that I know the hardware of to avoid driver issues and whatnot. I alos have enough Windows keys to deal with the multiple activations. I tried using Acronis True Image but it doesn't seem to do what I want(unless idk how to use it properly). Any advice is welcome thanks :)

• Prevent Win7 boot loader from taking over the WinXP boot loader

  My setup: 1 physical hard drive (500gb divided equally into 2 partitions) Windows XP Partition (Current OS) Empty Partition where I will be installing Windows 7 My question is how do I prevent the Windows7 boot loader from taking over my WindowsXP boot loader when installing the new OS ? The reason I am asking is because I already have a ghosted backup of my WinXP partition and if I ever need to restore my xp partition using that backup, would it not overwrite the Windows7 boot loader that was placed in the XP partition with the one from the backup, thus making windows 7 unable to boot. Also what would happen if I decided to delete the Windows XP partition altogether somewhere down the road and along with it the Win7 boot loader that was placed there, wouldn't that cause the system not to boot at all.. To avoid these issues, I simply want to make sure that BOTH the Win7 and WinXP boot loaders are available on their respective partitions and they do not interfere with each other in any way.   Hi, I have a problem trying to open my computer's mouse settings by either going to the command prompt and typing, 'control mouse', 'main.cpl' (as researched online) or simply by trying to go to the Control Panel and clicking on 'Mouse' under Hardware and Sound section. I have also tried running cmd as Administrator and trying the above commands but that is of no help. Lastly, if I search for 'mouse' and click 'Mouse' from the Windows search bar, that doesn't work either. In the past I had bought and installed Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 6000 software and have just now bought and installed HP's Wireless Comfort Mobile mouse. Any help in this regard is highly recommended. I won't be able to restore or reinstall my laptop since it's a heavy use machine. Thanks! Yasser

  Im in the process of setting up a new database server. I have been running a few mysql database servers before and it has been working okay. But i would like to hear the recommended setup for my server. For example, what should i set the max connection, query_cache_size, table_cache and so on. I have arround 4-600 per second: Open tables: 112 Queries per second avg: 430.386. The server i am setting it up on have the following configuration: Linux version 2.6.32-5-amd64 (Debian 2.6.32-41squeeze2) 2x Intel Xeon X3440 @ 2.53GHz 4GB Ram /, /boot, /tmp etc on Software RAID1, 2x 7200RPM SATA Data location on Software RAID0, 2x7200RPM SATA Im am going to place the mysql databases on the RAID0.
