  • Writing good looking documentation in pdf format on a mac [closed]

    I'd like to write some documentation that will be written in sections (1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, etc). I'd like to use something that will generate the table of contents in the end or at least have it "linked" up so that when I make changes everything is still accurate (if I merge section 2.1 and 2.2 or something). The end result needs to be in pdf. I don't want to pay $350 for Acrobat Pro either... I've got microsoft word, but every little thing is a pain (for example, having one background of a page be a different color than another). Any ideas on how to create quality documentation in a pdf format?

  • Flattening PDF transparency

    I have a PDF, made with Inkscape, that uses transparent colors. This image shall be used in a LaTeX document. While preserving the transparency is nice for editing, it can be a problem for printing. Printing usually involves PDF to PS conversion. Since Postscript does not support transparency, this requires either flatting, i.e. creating a vector graphic that works without transparency or rastering, i.e. rendering a bitmap image. When a PDF document containing such a figure is printed (or converted to PS) using Evince (or Cairo or Ghostscript), the whole page gets rendered as a bitmap, rendering fonts ugly (different from other pages). (Adobe Acrobat handles such PDFs well.) Unfortunately, converting the PDF figures to EPS (before including them with LaTeX) doesn't help much, because both pdftops and pdf2ps (again, Cairo or Ghostscript) rasterize the image, i.e. render a bitmap (saved as EPS). (This is slightly better, because it doesn't affect the whole page, but I'd still prefer a vector graphics.) How can I flatten transparency with Inkscape or other software on Linux?

  • How can I deal with file association in different application(not in Nautilus)?

    Maybe i don't understand the system. Upgraded to (reinstalled) Ubuntu 11.04. Is there any way the applications can use something that i set in nautilus, or it's just a wrong idea about the usage? In nautilus the file association works great, easy, handy and so on... My first problem was when installed chromium. Downloaded a file, a popup ask for assocation, set nautilus. And it only opens folder, for any file show an error: it is not a direcrory. Ok, so i thought Google chrome changed, because previously .pdf open acrobat,.torrent open vuze and so on. But now i have to open nautilus on download folder with it, than select and open the preferable application by manually and can't use any automatism i used to. Then in gnome commander , it not followed the default association i set in nautilus. Ok maybe it is commander fault. use it's own. Then in calibre, the "read" use again this default "can't open its not a directory" error So it's seems to me the applications not using well this file associations or i really don't understand the aim of file associations system (mime,.desktop files,...) If there is no solution i think i have to search some program (if any exist's) which can identify and launch application and set as default instead nautilus.

    For those of you coming to the ADF Hands on training on the 22nd March in London, there was a link to the prerequisites.  Unfortunately, in a reshuffle of content on OTN, this page was removed.  So, over the next day or so I’m hoping to the pull together the relevant information into this blog post.  So keep checking back! Firstly, you need to being your laptop with you to do the hands on exercises.  No laptop, no hands on. Recommended 2GB RAM running Microsoft Windows XP SP2, 2003 Server SP2, Vista (32 bit only), Windows 7 or Linux or Mac 2GHz Processor (less will be acceptable but slower) Mozilla Firefox 2.0 or higher, Internet Explorer 7 or higher, Safari 3.0 and higher, Google Chrome 1.0 or higher Winzip or other extracting software Adobe Acrobat reader Flash (if you want to see dynamic graphs in your application) As for software, you will need have installed JDeveloper 11g.  The hands on instructions are based on 11.1.1.2 (or is it 11.1.1.3)! anyway, either of those or 11.1.1.4 would be required. You also need an Oracle database on your machine and access to the HR schema (which should be unlocked).  Don’t expect to have access to a network and VPN to a database. A simple test, unplug your laptop from your corporate network, run up JDev  and select File –> New –> Database connection and make sure you can connect to HR database and see the Emp/Dept etc tables.  If you can do that, you should be good to go. I would strongly recommend ensuring you have this in place before you arrive on Tuesday. Look forward to seeing you there.

    I am currently choosing between Intel Core i7-3770 (quad, Ivy) and Intel Core i7-3930K (6 cores, Sandy Bridge-E). This machine will be used for both work (Adobe, Autodesk software, graphic and coding-related) and gaming. Even if some applications I will use are capable to utilize all 6 cores at once, is it worth preferring Sandy Bridge-E to newer Ivy Bridge? Games aren't and probably will perform better on Ivy, won't they? 6-core is also twice as expensive as a quad Ivy.

  • Injection of banners in my webbrowsers possible malware

    Recently I have started to suspect that I have some kind of virus on my computer. There are 3 symptoms: Banners are being displayed on pages that doesn't use commercials, for instance when viewing screen-shots on Steam. It is only displayed after the rest of the page has been loaded and seems to be injected into it. The whole page is replaced with a commercial with the option to skip the commercial. The page is replaced with a search window claiming that the page could not be found. I have tried to scan my computer with Antivir and Adaware but only found a couple of tracking cookies. I have run HijackThis but since this isn't really my area I haven't been able to discern what shouldn't be there except the line about zonealarm since I have uninstalled it. Is there anyone out there who is able to see if there is anything suspicious in the log-file at the end or has suggestions regarding programs that might be better to find the virus than Antivir and Adaware?   • Good IE6,IE7 simulator applications?

    I have IE8 installed, I would like to test websites in IE6 and IE7. I cannot use Adobe's BrowserLab to test because the website needing tests contains dynamic content. I cannot find a good application to simulate IE6 or 7. Is one available/recommended? Or can I install and run IE6 through 8 on my machine at the same time?

Clearly, I don't want to shell out a lot of money for something so simple, so getting adobe premiere or similar software is a no go. I could however consider paying a small software (max 30 dollars) for this specific task.

An example: TEAC TV manual EU2816STF BTW: I am using Adobe Reader - perhaps an alternative viewer might help?

    Hi, I have Adobe's PDF creator installed and I'm using Microsoft Project 2007... I want to print my gantt chart as one giant single-page PDF. (Currently it's set to print on letter sized paper, and it's six pages in a 3x2 layout.) I can't figure out where or how to make those settings. The PDF page setup doesn't seem to be right, nor "page setup" in Project. Help :-)

I was looking at an answer to a different question, and Ben Richards had made mention that laptops that support digitizer (possibly wrong terminology) technology is superior.     Foxit PDF, doesn't have a shell extension to display thumbnails of PDF files in Windows Explorer (the thumbnails are shown instead of PDF document icons). Is there a shell extension that do that? i.e to see thumbnails instead of PDF icon. BTW, PDFXchange and Adobe have a shell extension such that the thumbnails are shown instead of PDF document icons.

    I thought Adobe Photoshop could do everything, but apparently it cannot read multipage TIFF files. I have a TIFF file with four pages, and I need to edit one of the pages. Windows Picture Viewer can print all four pages, but cannot split them. Anyone know how I can split the original TIFF into four separate images suitable for editing? The Google search for "free tiff splitter windows" returns lots of suspicious looking downloads.

    Our users My Documents are stored on a Emc NAS. I have noticed huge traffic coming from users and I see that most of it is coming to cache directories of Internet Explorer and other browsers. One thing i suspect is Adobe Flash caching streams. We have various Windows clients and no restrictions on browsers.     Adobe Audition is really stupid in that when you change the size of the window, and then change it back to the original size, all the frame positions are lost and you have to tediously reposition them by hand. I'd like to make it completely impossible to ever resize the window, just keep it maximized at all times. If I accidentally click "Restore" or drag the title bar, it should either ignore it, or move around the screen while staying the same size. Is there any way to do this?

    I have this situation: the drummer records the track (8 tracks in a multitrack session). Now, how do I check how distant are the recorded beats from their theoretical position i.e.: there is always some error in human recorded tracks, but is there any software that can show me the ideal (theoretical, quantized) beat and the recorded one and could alert me if the error is too big. P.S.: I'm searching for a standalone tool, or for a plugin that can work with Adobe Audition 3 or Nuendo 3.
