  Have a couple of servers I'd like to setup as Hyper-V Servers, with a couple of Windows 2008 Standard VMs. On the host, we have a few hardware devices we'd like to be accessible to the guest; I'm not sure if these are supported via a raw "pass-thru" on Hyper-V (which I don't have alot of experience with) if the same drivers are installed on the guest. Hardware in question is a Brooktrout fax card, a SCSI adapter for the tape drive, and a 9-pin serial connected to one of the core firewalls for management.

• wildcard host name bindings for multiple subdomains in multiple sites on IIS7 with a single IP address

  Situation: I have a single windows 2008 server with a single public IP address. I have multiple domains with wildcard A records pointing to the single IP address. I need each domain to be hosted by a different web site. (i.e. www.domain1.com by site domain1site) I need domain1.com to act like www.domain1.com I need each site to be able to have multiple subdomains (i.e. www.domain1.com, abc.domain1.com, xyz.domain1.com) Not relevant yet here it goes, I plan to handle each subdomain by a different application hosted in the same site (i.e. application /xyz in domain1site) However I found out that IIS7 does not support creating web sites with wildcard host name binding and setting it without any subdomain (i.e. domain1.com) does not work, even for www.domain1.com. Is there a simple solution? Does any IIS Extension like Application Request Routing provide such capability?

  Scenario: I have a Mac running Lion that is connected to an OpenVPN server I have a Windows XP VM (running on parallels, but I don't think this is important) I want to be able to route traffic from the XP VM via the host Mac's OpenVPN connection so that I can log on to a domain. The remote network is 172.16.0.0/23 (255.255.254.0) Open VPN is configured to supply address in the 10.100.101.0/24 range and sets up the routing to 172.16.0.0 using the gateway 10.100.101.1/32 My local network is 192.16.1.0/24 NOTE: I do not want to install OpenVPN into the XP virtual machine as I would have to use a passwordless key in order for OpenVPN to connect before logon. Anyone got any ideas?

• PowerShell script halts execution when Windows XP PC is locked

  I have the following script that does a continuous ping and reports failures. It works fine, except the loop apparently "suspends" when the computer is locked. I have confirmed this by starting the script, immediately locking the PC, waiting 10 minutes, and seeing how many pings have occurred. It is nowhere near the expected number. What could be the culprit? • While in CMD shell, copying files from host OS to guest VM locks files (VMware Player/Workstation)

  We're running the latest versions of VMWare Player and Workstation for Windows. The following behavior is identical across both products. Problem: We open a CMD prompt in our guest OS (XP, Vista, Windows 7) and copy files from our host OS using the standard CMD shell copy command: copy z:\C$\testfiles The copy completes successfully, but from that point forward, all the files that were copied to our guest OS are now LOCKED on our host OS. This does not happen if we use Windows Explorer to copy files - it only happens when files are copied via the CMD shell. As mentioned at the start of this question, this behavior is reproducible in both VMWare Player and VMWare Workstation across multiple machines and multiple guest OS's. I've googled for a workaround, but without success. Any ideas appreciated. Malcolm

  I am trying to figure out the best way to host multiple domains on my Ubuntu server. I have tried multiple options, but I can't get everything to work the way I want it to. I want to be able to add domains without having to restart Apache each time. I tried using mod_vhost_alias (see below), but that maps www.domain.com and domain.com to different folders. I also need to be able to use mod_rewite to map requests for domain.com/app/* to domain.com/somescript.php current httpd.conf: UseCanonicalName Off VirtualDocumentRoot /var/www/%0 Any thoughts?

Something like <VirtualHost {{internal-ipaddress}}:80> ....... </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost {{domain-name}}:80> ....... </VirtualHost> Note that the internal IP address and the domain name belong to the same server or same server instance.   Noob question (because I'm a noob when it comes to Web development). I'm not sure whether I should ask it here or at ServerFault. I am developing an ASP.NET Web Service and a PHP Web site consuming the Web Service. They are meant to be run on different machines. However, only for development purposes, I need to run both on my machine. I cannot use virtual machines. I would like to know if it is possible to configure IIS Apache to host both my Web Service and my Web site? Or, do I need to host the PHP site using Apache? I am using IIS 7.5 Apache HTTP Server 2.2 (NOTE: I have nothing against Apache. In fact, so far I like it more than IIS, however, I would rather not have two Web server applications installed in the same machine.) • How to collect figures of traffic used per-host, broken up by time and destination?

  We have a relatively small network, all PSs in one subnet. One PC with two NICs and pfSense installed works as a firewall/router. There is an OpenVPN tunnel to a remote location, created as a site-to-site connection to another pfSense box there. I have an assignment to capture, store and show (via a web interface) information on traffic generated (both incoming and outcoming) by each host on our subnet and present it in several views: megabytes per calendar hours / days / months / years (that is, not just "one month back", but "in Dec 2010" and so on); megabytes per destination: VPN to remote location / other destinations / Google Apps servers. I tried the software packages in pfSense that offer traffic montoring - but it seems they don't store the information fixed by months, instead showing the amounts of traffic generated in periods (days/months/etc) calculated from the present moment. I'm also interested in understanding what would be the best way for me to break up traffic by hosts and destinations. I'm open to all suggestions, even if they mean that I will have to understand something new to me.

This way things are more secure if setup correctly, and there are artificial storage limitations or pay-walls. Some thing similar to ownCloud: http://owncloud.org/ There is one important feature I want to have: the ability the stream movies in a web browser from my personal cloud to anywhere in the world. In the past I tried this with a NAS, and I mapped XBMC to the NAS via SFTP, and certain media types could stream in this manner. I've also used things like PLEX. In this case, I am looking for a single solution for personal cloud storage and movie streaming from that cloud into a web browser. Does anyone know if this can be accomplished? Some random details about my attempts: On my host Windows I get error 800 trying to VPN. I can ping server address from my guest Win 7 and I have VPN connection established from my host Mac. I do disable VPN on my Mac when tying to establish it through guest. I tried to VPN from Mac and see if Guest sees it. It doesn't. Thank you!

  I'm setting up a small office network with a single public IP (let's say it's 69.16.230.117). I've configured NAT on the router with incoming traffic forwarded to the server (say the server has a private IP of 192.168.0.2). Is it okay to configure the client machines on the same subnet to access the server via the router's public IP (69.16.230.117)? In practice it's never caused me problems, but I've heard, here and there, that it is a bad idea, and one should use the private IP (192.168.0.2). Does connecting to the default host via public IP from within its subnet cause any issues? Please refrain from writing "never! it breaks the intranet!" ;-)

  The setup: Windows XP guest OS running inside Parallels 5 on a OS X 10.6.2 host. I have a win32 application that runs in windows that communicates with other programs by sending out keystrokes to the program in focus. I can run this software inside parallels just fine, but I need a way for it to communicate (via keystrokes) with native OS X applications. For instance, the windows software sends out a continuous stream of a's and w's, based on the program input from an external source. On the other side, I have a Mac version of VLC media player with hotkeys set up for a and w for the two functions I would like to manipulate from the windows software. How can I set up a link between the guest and host OS's with Parallels that lets a windows program send keystrokes to a mac program?

• Can I install linux has the host in a dell poweredge server (r710)?

  I might have a deal on dual six core poweredge server and I'm about to go test its performance but I'm wondering few things which I can't find answers for, and I can't test them before buying the machine. I don't want vmware at all so can I just wipe it and install linux instead, or is it embedded in some parts I have no access to. Will I still be able to update different firmwares (perc controllers, motherboard, etc) on this dell poweredge or does it require to have the vmware esxi installed as the host os.   Hi, My question is regarding the host name mapped to a machine's IP. I am new to Linux, I have a machine to test whether our j2ee based web application runs fine in linux box. we are able to deploy our application and successfully and even able to access the same in that machine. But when I tried accessing it through another machine in the same network, I am not able to access the URL using the hostname specified, instead I am able to access if I provide the ipaddress. I tried putting nslookup MyIP# command to know the name of the ip in the DNS server, where I got some junk value.com; when I tried to access with that name I am able to access the machine. Kindly provide me inputs to change the hostname of this machine in that domain server. Thanks in Advance!! Jay

  Hi guys I'm currently developing using rails and for some reason bundle install is returning the following output Error Bundler::HTTPError during request to dependency API Fetching full source index from https://rubygems.org/ Could not reach https://rubygems.org/ I've discovered that pinging by domain name keeps returning an unknown host. The browser is still resolving web pages just fine and I've managed to confirm that the problem is localized (i.e. the rubygems page isn't down). I'm completely lost so any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

  I'm setting up a new Tomcat 7.0.33 server, and I'm looking for a simple way to include a directory full of virtual host definition XML files for configuration. I've found that it's possible to do XML includes from server.xml, but this requires a line in server.xml for each file, and is no less work than just having the entire config right in server.xml. I'm looking for something similar to Apache's Include directive. The end result I'm looking for is to have a directory I can drop an XML file into that Tomcat will pick up on the next restart, without having to modify server.xml. Is there a way to do this?
